  • With Peter Jackson’s final chapter in the ‘Middle Earth Saga’, 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies' hitting theatres worldwide next week, I thought it would be fun to create a trailer that promotes his cinematic retelling of ‘The Hobbit’ as a single epic piece.

    For everyone saying it would have worked better as one movie, I disagree. Although, it should have been the original two movie split as intended. When you read the book, there is a clear tonal shift halfway through. The original ending to the first movie was going to be Bard appearing on the riverbank after the barrel scene, with the second movie being the rest of the journey. The first movie therefore covers all of the lighthearted, swashbuckling numerous encounters, with the second movie being much more sombre and series when you hit Lake Town, Smaug and the Battle of Five Armies. I've been editing them together myself following this original guideline and it works so much better. Film one with a few extended scenes in, still keeping the White Council and going at a steady pace I have got to 2 hours 40 minutes. Once Battle of Five Armies is released on DVD, I assume the second film will be near enough the same time as well. All these cuts trying to cram the movies in to 4 or even 3 hours result in a movie that feels rushed for the sake of it. A 2 film split is perfect and will be my own personal preferred way of watching them in the future; now finally equally up there with LOTR.

      @moviegeek1111 9 років тому +4

      I agree with this, two films would have been perfect to fully cover the book, three is just too much. One film is possible, but most of the lighthearted bits from the first half of the book will need to be trimmed to match the tone and story arc of the second half.

    Nice trailer. I prefer three movies 9+ hours with "filler" added. I am excited to buy the extended versions so they will be even longer. I think Mr. Jackson has done the books justice. I for one can't get enough Middle Earth lore.

    Beautiful, thank you so much. I don't care for trolls and haters. I love the vision, the passion, the energy, and the magic of Peter Jackson's Middle Earth vision. They will always be unquestioningly my favorite films, able to transport me to a strange, wondrous land of elves and dragons, halflings and dwarves, dungeons deep, and caverns old.

    The way I think it should have been all along.
    Maybe; at some point in the future, someone could try to re-cut all three movies together into one 3-4 hour long single movie that realises the original 300-odd page story of The Hobbit better...
    I am probably never going to watch all three of these movies together ever, it's just far too long, so I feel like I'll never see the whole complete story as a single epic experience as originally intended but I'd be well up for watching a 3-4 hour version of The Hobbit.

      I saw Five Armies today and while I enjoyed it and the others it was a little disappointing too. Purely as an editing exercise I think when Five Armies is realised on DVD I may edit the three films into two parts each about an hour and a half and upload them. I'm sure others will too. Don't for one minute think I didn't like the Hobbit series, far from it I just think it would've worked better as two films. I'm guessing some greedy studio executives made the "trilogy" decision rather than Jackson himself.

    • @bigmoviefan
      @bigmoviefan 9 років тому

      Rich Silverwood
      You have an outstanding idea!! Two Parts, total of less than 4 hours. "The Hobbit" (the book's plot) simply does not support more than 4 hours of film. There is much that can be eliminated from Jackson's trilogy. Many, many scenes can be trimmed. The almost 15 minute opening of "An Unexpected Adventure" can be eliminated, and parts of it dropped in as appropriate, AFTER the dwarves arrive. The movie should have internal flash-forwards, not a flashback beginning. Howard Shore's great theme "Misty Mountains" should be overlaid more, especially in Part 2. As much as I like Barry Humphries, I think the whole Goblin King sequence can be dropped. I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOUR VERSION!!

      The Ethereal Lord Exactly! I hate when people say stuff like, "That movie/series was shit...they left too much stuff out of it", or "they added too many new things to it"...like, so what? How I see it, in this case, is that Tolkien died a little over 40 years ago, so there was no way for Jackson to add his input or his little "tweeks" into either the LOTR series or The Hobbit series. And even if Tolkien was still alive, he wasn't a movie director - he was an author. The skill at which he (definitely, without a doubt) excelled at was writing beautiful pieces of literature; and, at the same time, the skill at which Jackson (again...definitely, without a doubt) excels at is making epic, jaw-droppingly-awesome movies. Even though I personally think Jackson has the ability to write a novel or two, he will never, EVER write a story as breath-takingly beautiful, and as totally immersive as Tolkien's many works. Personally, I LOVE Jackson's Middle-Earth saga, and I wouldn't want anything more than what he has made. He did an amazing job on the films, making an almost perfect balance of Tolkien's ideas and his own little twists. I just wish people would give him more credit and be more open and accepting of his work, and truly appreciate all the time and effort that he put into doing what he loves to do.
      So, yeah, in a nutshell, go make your own LOTR/Hobbit series, Manuel Brown, if you think Jackson's is so shit.
      But I assure you, your series will pale in comparison to JACKSON'S ALMIGHTY WRATH!!!
      ...aaaaaaaaaaaaand that is my rant for today.
      That is all.

      He didn't say that he didn't like the Hobbit series, or that he wants another, but that 9h is too much for what could very well have been a 3h single movie. The Hobbit series is fine (not on par with LotR, but better than many), yet it will be interesting to see a combined 3-4h film that will reflect the novel.

    Did anyone actually read the fucking book? So much of the "action" was left out or glazed over. The Battle of Five Armies was just Bilbo being knocked out and waking up with everyone dead. Gandalf disappears the entire book, just to come back at the end and say "Oh, I was just fighting Sauron, but don't worry about it".
    That being said, when all 3 are out, someone SHOULD edit it all into one film, just to see how it wouldn't have worked

      I edited the first two movies into one movie. And I cut so much shit out that it's only 155 minutes. These movies are actually pretty good without Radagast, Azog, Legolas, Tariel, and a bunch of other stupid characters I cut out.

    • @TheCharnstar
      @TheCharnstar 9 років тому +1

      I've loved the first two films how they are, I'm just worried about the third one. Legolas, Tariel and Azog are obviously added. to add tension in the Battle of Five Armies. In the book, the Battle came from no where. At least now, they've been building it up, and with the Tariel/Dwarf romance storyline, there's some tension on who's right and who's wrong (spoiler alert, people just die and it's a pointless battle... that's the point of the battle)
      As for Radagast, he's there so Gandalf isn't just doing his stuff on his own. We know he fought Sauron in the books, and maybe it would work just seeing him do it on your own.
      All that aside, can you link us to your edit; I'd love to see how it turned out.
      Do it with the third movie if you can, when it's out

    Im gonna play devils advocate to what most people are saying in the comments, and say that the Hobbit would in fact, NOT be better as one film. It'd be too rushed, and the story wouldn't get enough attention to detail as it needs/deserves. As a book, some of the brevity works, but if characters like Bard weren't fleshed out for the films, it would be silly. Plus it would be really lame if there wasnt a climactic battle at the end of it all! Now Im not saying I agree with EVERY change and addition to the original (believe me, I don't), but overall I really like what PJ and Co. have done with it! And afterall, a lot of it does come from Tolkien himself...

    Two movies would have been perfect. One would not have been enough and three was too many. It doesn't matter that it was one book - it was a children's book with a simplistic narrative; attempting to adapt it in the style of LotR would have made the pacing feel jarring and the plot feel overly condensed.
    I really, really want to see a fan project that makes it two movies instead of one.

      Thing is Tolkein made several attempts to 'match' it with Lord of the Rings in tone. He abandoned it in 1960 because his friends discouraged him out of affection for the original. He tried again just before his death but I don't believe he finished. What Peter has done to a degree is finish that. I appreciate the addition of Dol Gildur as well. It explains why Galadriel can't just take on Sauron without getting into the whole Mair/Valar/Eldar mythology. She was magically exhausted. The only thing I didn't need was Tauriel. That was very fan fic. Of course Legolas should be here, Tolkien probably would have done the same. He didn't exist at the time of writing The Hobbit. Thranduil was in all likelihood meant to be Thingol at the time of writing The Hobbit. Of course the Elvenprince is leading the forces of the Elvenking. And Peter gets a nice wink to Legolas of Gondolin in there with Orcrist.

    Great trailer, though putting all those epic moments in one movie would have been impossible within 3 hours. The Smaug scene alone was about 30 to 45 minutes long, and the part in the misty mountains was near the same time length, if not longer. The Hobbit story that Jackson wanted could have been done within 2 movies like it was originally planned. But then he/they decided to add a bunch of filler to make it into 3 movies.

    I personally doubt that it would've worked as just one film. Two 3-3.5 hour films I reckon would've would've worked well, you just have to trim the action down a fair bit. One, no too much important content to get into one film, even a 3 hours plus length film.

    Great work! There was or is a video here on youtube, where someone had done a chronological edit of all the trailers and tv-spots for the first Hobbit movie. It would probably be a bit too time-consuming for you, but if you could that for the Hobbit sequels or/and do a re-worked/perfected version of the mentioned video, it would be amazing. The video is called Unexpected Trailer and Tv-spot Re-edit.

    I love this trailer. It centralized on Bilbo and their quest as it should have been. This film would've been better in duo (2 film installment only) plus I wish that they relied less on CGI... 😓 sadly (in my opinion), this trilogy was a waste.

    One movie would have been too rushed. Three movies is too drawn out. Two movies would have been perfection.

    I thought The Lord of the Rings Trilogy worked as it was, with the extended editions of course... Each movie can be watched on their own as part of a trilogy. However... this trailer should be for an actual film! The Hobbit should never have been split up to be such a long piece! I think they should have made one really really long movie and had an intermission... That would have been revolutionary!

    But is it the final work or you'll remake it? I saw your "Star Wars The original trilogy" clip and I'm looking forward to see something alike.

    I dropped this after the first movie, somewhere around the very long scene where the dwarves are throwing crockery around...can't believe it but I would rather watch (i.e. torrent) some amateur cut-down of the hobbit to one film than see the other two. This trailer still has evangeline lilly in it though, and like the lotr trilogy, I am sure there are worthwhile changes and inventions by Jackson, just not enough to fill 7 hours.

    This is definitely what should have been done in the first place. I never thought The Hobbit warranted three movies. Perhaps two at the most, considering all the additional things they've included from appendices and so on, but never three.

    This is an amazing trailer, but personally if they didnt make it into atleast 2 movies, the movie would have to be 3+hours to really do the book justice.

    If you remake it with battle of the 5 armies and the rest of the lotr trilogy could you throw in that " I will not part with one piece of it, not one coin" line? Your awesome at these and my favorite is the cornetto trilogy one you made.

    • @heresjohnny1991

      I understand why you'd feel that way about my use of Howard Shore's ROTK Trailer music for the finale, as it's a decision I wasn't entirely content with either. I've loved that track for such a long time, and the ROTK trailer was a massive influence on me as an editor. I experimented with many different Howard Shore tracks for the ending (I wanted to stick to his music exclusively for this project) but nothing was capturing that "event" feel quite like the old LOTR trailers did. With time running out and other work (in my life outside of UA-cam) piling up, I decided to use ROTK track. Yes, I agree it might not be the most original choice, but it captured that feeling I was going after. I'd even argue that it adds a sense of nostalgia to this cut. Sorry to hear you weren't a fan of the segment (I didn't expect everyone to be), but I do hope you enjoyed the 2 minutes and 44 seconds that preceded it!
