Story behind the song:
Since the beginning of The Piano Guys, "Lord of the Rings" has been our most requested work. As we reach one million subscribers we wanted to dedicate this arrangement to our "subs." This was an intimidating project -- encompassing the power and the beauty of the many musical themes throughout the movies; capturing the emotion and the "epic" nature of the story; and all with a few cellos, a piano, and a couple Canon 5D Mark IIs. We normally write our tunes during intense compositional binges -- the bulk of our songs have been written within the period of a few days. This one was different. It was a drawn-out process during which we studied the music of The Lord of Rings, contemplated what themes to incorporate, how they could tell the story by flowing from one to the other. We also spent a lot of time finding new ways to imitate instruments from various sections of the orchestra using Steve's cellos -- from the brass section through the woodwind section to the percussion section.
We love the story of The Lord of the Rings. It is a tale that has spiritual meaning for us. We love its messages -- that "even the smallest person can change the course of the future," that "there's good in this world and it's worth fighting for," "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us" ... and that everyone should have a "second breakfast." =) We love the poignant depiction of loyalty between the Fellowship of the Ring (we even included the "Fellowship" theme three times - at 0:18, 3:58 and at the end of the arrangement - to feel like a common thread in the music as it is in the story.) We wanted to paint these messages musically as vividly as possible. Like so many things in the creative realm, and to paraphrase Mr. Bilbo Baggins, the hardest part was the first step. After a brief introduction of the Hobbit Theme and Fellowship Theme (arguably the most relevant musical moments) we felt strongly that we needed to begin with the deeply touching melody that serves as the soundtrack to Arwen's vision of her future son (in the extended version of Return of the King). That gave way to a Divinely-led journey from the Shire and Rivendell through Isengard and Rohan to Gondor's victory over Mordor. We endeavored to represent each of the major allies and opposing forces in the story:
The Elves 0:44
The Ents 1:48
Rohan 2:08
Mordor and Isengard 2:32
Hobbits 3:08
Gondor 4:11

I literally tear up anytime i hear this music. Middle Earth is the greatest world, book, film series of all time. It holds my heart and there is no form of entertainment that has been more impact and meaningful to me in my life, ever. Thank you for doing this guys. And even more so, thank you Tolkien for writing such perfection that inspired not only film makers but musicians alike to craft such beauty all because of the amazing world and stories you created.
Rest in peace J.R.R Tolkien.
Beauty
woohoo!! yes!! i completely and entirely agree. thank you so much.
Perfectly said. Getting goosebumps while reading (and hearing) this.
soo true
Couldn’t agree more.
3:07 Concerning Hobbits ALWAYS brings a smile to my face whenever I hear it! Bilbo, Frodo and Gandalf come to mind and of course The Shire :)
And it always will :)
jsphat81 Absolutely true.
jsphat81 you forgot samvise ! :D
jsphat81 Speaking of hobbits, I would like to hear Song of the Misty Mountains from The Hobbit on a chello.
jsphat81 , concerning hobbits is not actually in this song; it's "in dreams"
this video made all lord of the rings fans proud. bravo
yeah.
Howard Shore fans.
Defiantly. :D
I agree

The most underrated Character in liturature
@@christiannixon9400
Thank you
@@christiannixon9400 Well, not really. First, Sam never wanted praise. And second, I think Sam is supposed to be the hero, the one everyone loves and relates to, not Frodo. Sam is plenty of people's favorite character, including mine. But Frodo sacrificed the most. In order to save the Shire and Middle-Earth, he had to give them up. That's why their friendship is so beautiful: neither can do their part without the other.
@@abigailheiss24 Frodo literally would have died a million times if it wasn't for Sam
@@abigailheiss24 there she is, the typical internet know-it-all.
I love the Lord of the Rings. Its one of the best movies of all time and with the most beautiful soundtrack.
@Faith Chipman Theres always one😂. But I would have to agree with her friend. The book was batter.
@Faith Chipman But it is a movie too. The tittle "Lord of the Rings" can refer to both movie and book, so the statement was perfectly sound. The movies are some of the best of all time with the most beautiful soundtrack, that statement is true.
@Faith Chipman the trilogy of the ring: The writing material, the books. the visual appearance, the movies. and the melodic experience. Both are amazing in their own way and together they are one master of great entertainment
Play Skyrim with the soundtrack blasting in the background... 👌👌
@Faith Chipman the Movie was way better than the book. I loved the books but its so so so so poorly paced.
These guys really make UA-cam a better place.
Lord of the Strings
Celloship of the Strings
The Two Tempos
Return of the Key
The Harmony
An Orchestrated Journey
The Desolation of Scales
Battle of Five Ensembles
Three Strings for the Elven-kings in Deceptive cadence,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their Harmony of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to dance,
One for the Dynamic Lord on his drone throne
In the Legato of Mordor where the Sharps lie.
One String to rule them all, One bow to find them,
One String to bring them all, and in the darkness bow them,
In the Legato of Mordor where the Sharps lie.
I did NOT do all of the titles! I simply compiled them. I can only take credit for the Hobbit and the verse! All others belong to their respective owners. Thanks to Jordan Mao and all others for inspiring this.
Lol, that's so funny! I especially like the ones nearest to the top.
Best. Comment. Ever!!!😂😂😂😂
Love it.

So glad my wife told me about this piece, she walked down the aisle to the start of for our wedding. Thank you producing a beautiful piece of music guys!
I literally just searched this because my fiancé loves lord of the rings and I wanted to surprise him with a piece that would make him cry alittle. Love that your wife walked down to this!!!
@@jacquelinedeangelo9747 I would throughly recommend using it! We did it through a zoom stream as well and it came through very well!
Good luck with your wedding and congrats!
Some day, hopefully in the very, very far future, we’re going to lose Howard shore, Hans Zimmer, John Williams, and I’m not ready for a world without their music
Same I might lose interest in new movies if their music isn't in it.
Well then, it's nice to know that we will never live in a world without their music. It will always be with us
The Second Coming of Jesus might happen once they leave.
HOW CAN ANYONE DISLIKE THIS MASTERPIECE? JUST. AMAZING. Cannot describe it. I wish Tolkien could listen to this.
their eyes are teary, thus can't see the buttons clearly.
People who don't like the Lord of the rings, this is a dumb question.
Ottoman Historian and that's a dumb answer. you can like the god damn song even if you haven't ever watched lotr. of course, if you love the movies then the soundtrack will be much more appealing to you. but anyway this is a masterpiece itself so it's not necessary to love the trilogy just to enjoy the music
I've never seen any lotr movies but still i love this song, so , what +M Josefina just said applies to me! :D
its fine it's only a little bit over a thousand
ps: must be lord of the rings die hard fans
Okay, now I'm convinced:
These guys are elves in disguise! And I tell you this:
There are no words in the tongues of
Elves fair and at peace,
Men bold or Ents so old...
for this masterpiece!
Every time I see this 3:09 I automatically take a deep breath in and smile, and it's not even voluntarily, getting chills down my back. That tune, that sun, that stream, that... and then I'm crying. *This* is what I consider *genius.*
Jesus is coming soon!
@@yeudler41 In our lifetime, yes. 🙂
@@Northanteus Oh, not necessarily.
Such a lovely setting for that section of this piece! The video adds to the music there.
The cello has such a heartbreaking ethereal tone that blows my mind every time I hear it. Like or just reply if you agree
The violin from the original sound track was uplifting and gracious, and the cello in this vid is courageous and strong. I adore both versions, having listened to both for as long as I can remember. Every time I hear either, my mind is overcome by ecstasy as I absorb the feeling and memories that comes from the movies and the playing. All the LOTR music is heavenly beautiful, I can’t get enough of it
WONDERFUL!
I agree ! Cello is the best instrument ever !
The cello is my favorite instrument. I prefer the sound of an old fashioned acoustic cello. This piece would have been wrong on an electric cello. I am learning to love the variety available from his many electric cellos in other pieces.
Why would anyone dislike this.... Seriously, this is such a lovely video combined with touching music. It's way too difficult to imagine someone disliking it.
Because they lack the musical talent to play any form of instrument, I feel sorry for them.
Harry Phillips That's very mean you know. Even the lack of the musical talent doesn't make this to be disliked.
Jack Delle Some people just don't have good taste in music and if it isn't exactly what they are looking for, they don't like it.
no kidding
Harry Phillips, they play better than my music teachers(who have been in the business for over 20 years!!)
This is probably one of my most favorite songs Piano Guys have released. Love the orc march!
Me 2
My favorite, hands down, no questions asked.
Same
Rohan's theme makes me feel like me preparing to war, donning my armour, sheathing my sword, and marching towards death bravely.
2019 anyone? As a true LOTR fan, this got me cryinnn
2011
YES IT DO
2020
Watching in 2020 also :) Beautiful... especially after my hubby and son just finished watching the third movie the other day. I tried, but I was bawling too much to watch that much. :)
I know that feeling. I think I’m done crying then Rohan them starts playing.2020
I rewatched the whole trilogy a couple days ago and I cannot believe I thought Two Towers and Return of the King were better than Fellowship of the Ring. I guess in terms of action they're better and more exciting, but Fellowship has a lot more to offer. It has much better pacing and is more emotional than the 2nd and 3rd movies imo. 1st time I watched Fellowship, I thought it was just a great movie. But watching it again, paying attention to every detail, and listening to every line the character spoke, it hit me pretty good. Like when Boromir in Rivendell told Aragorn "Gondor has no king, Gondor needs no king" to when he's about to die and admits to Aragorn "I would have followed you, my brother. My captain. My king." Fellowship is so underrated.
I agree
Deep Night They all have their great moments. The most emotional part was the ending when Frodo and Gandalf leave the shire. How could you miss that?!?! lol
why see it as 3 movies? it's one great story
Nothing beats when Theoden grabs his sword in the golden hall in two towers. pure emotion
+Josh Lyman I freaking agree to this!!!!!
One string to rule them all, one string to find them, one string to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

And in the ivories binds them

Holy crap, it's already been over 10 years since this released? Have I followed you guys over a decade?!? Been here since Jarrod Radnich's pirates of the caribbean medly.
Thank you for all these years and hope you will have at least 10 more prosperous years ahead.
"Never thought I'd play side by side with a piano....."
"What about side by side with a fellow string instrument?"
"Aye... I could do that."
They don't even play. They feel. I like how they smile when they are playing and it sounds pretty good. :)
several people have commented about it on several videos. i kinda think it's a little bit inspiring? i don't know.
Thanks guys for making me travel to Middle Earth again.
Who else LOVES LOTR and The Piano Guys??!!
ME DEFINATLY
And I give you my bow.
-Legolas of the elves
This is still one of the best masterpieces I have ever heard. It is like a beautiful and powerful song coming straight from the heavens. This will never be beaten by any other lotr music cover. I adore this.
This brings back some of my earliest memories... the summer afternoon when my father sat down with me and my sister and we watched the first LoTR... I love these movies so much!
I just.... I'm breathless hearing the music these guys can create.
These guys really do take you on a journey with this piece. In the description, they mention how most of their compositions come from musical binges and are completed within days. but this one came from intensive study and was way more thought out, to try and encompass what that movie means to its fans. At some points it feels like you’re embarking on an adventure, walking peacefully through a meadow, in the midst of trying to escape death, coming home... The video accompaniment is gorgeous, and to me it accentuates the music, amplifying how epic it is. As a Hobbit/LOTR fan, I really enjoyed this piece. It took me back to the books and movies, and I think it did real justice to the creative source from which they came.
Peter Jackson was the film genius to match Tolkien's literary genius... And Howard Shore was the musical genius to match them both together. Good job on this, you guys. Loved it.
"You have my bow!" (Cello pun intended)
Lololololol
"And my axe" ...
and my...fingers? (for piano)
And my finger? (For Violin)
You have my sword! (No pun inteded)
How is it possible you guys dont have at least 20 million followers? I am 100% honest when i say you do the most stirring, creative and inspiring music videos with the best musical and cinematic quality i have ever seen. In my life. My god.
"Pianos... pianos in the deep."
"They got a cellist."
Genuine quotes from the movie.
The part where you guys played "Grace of Undomiel" brought me tears! Beautiful!

Concerning Hobbits gives me goosebumps every time. What an amazing composed piece. The whole medley is incredible to be honest.
It's amazing that thet didnt just play Concerning hobbit, they even add a lot more song from the movement and the end result was spectacular.
Nathan Burton It is truly beatiful
They didn’t play the fucking concerning hobbits they played the breaking of the fellowship

Why didn't you name it "Lord of the Strings?"

Lord of the Strings - The Cellist
+Brenden Lawlor you gotta point! hahaha!
[Revealing my age here] Anyone else remember how Gene Kelly, especially when he was dancing/singing solo, used to tip his head slightly back and maintain a small smile, as if he were in communication with something that we could not see, something wonderful? Steven Sharp Nelson does the same thing, even more vividly: one can see his love for the music he makes, his joy in playing, his delight in harmony -- marvelous!
Someone in the comment section asked:Was that an active volcano in the background?
Me:No you fool of a took that was mount doom
Or it might have been The Lonely Mountain when Smaug was still there. =) (Great comment, by the way, Jasmine K. =)

Bloody heck mate, this is amazing. As an amateur musician, I love how evident it is that you two are just, for lack of a better term, completely in the zone, just absorbed into the music. This is not just two guys playing music. This is two guys *feeling* the music, *living* the music, and being totally captured by the music. It is that moment when musician, music, and instrument become one. Thank you for making this, you made my day.
I love the Lord of the Rings music. Howard Shore is a musical master. This piece is the best rendition I’ve heard, it blends all the themes and motifs so beautifully

I think no one can say that he is the most ardent fan of the lord of the rings. this is the kind of film that you can either compress to the greatest extent or be indifferent. I cannot find a single reason for the latter (maybe the absence of a heart), but I am not saying this as a reproach to you. in no case. And I want to show by this the greatness of this film that has conquered many countries.
I need to get a new heart, the one I have broke because it could not handle the beauty of this song done by TPG.

Reminds me of Wales. Mainly because the Hobbits seem kinda welsh. Well, not kinda, definitely.... and the Dwarves seem Scottish... men uhhh.... Maybe English? Or Irish? Idk. If the Elves are based off the English I am leaving XD.
m8 feels more like nz but that's just me
Lord of Light I don't find this much Irish at all, I'm Irish so I would know, if you wanna hear something Irish, listen to the Irish Rovers with songs like "Johnney I hardley knew ye" or "Drunken Sailor"
I'm Irish too, I wouldn't agree with your sweeping statement that you would know due to that. I think the song largely sampled (Concerning Hobbits) is distinctly linked with the Irish culture, with trad notes and progressions...though not in the genre of Drunken Sailor of course. And I'm studying my pHd in this, that is why I claim "I would know"!

This music is pure gold.
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
