One thing I don’t listen to is “White cabinets are out!” Lol. Now, that my three kiddos are young adult and teenagers, I finally get to enjoy those light colors and a brand new cream to white couches to lighter rugs etc.😂 😅
Lol that adds maintenence that I'd never want to take on
@@Heyu7her3 LOL. It is a lot of maintenance. But gosh I’ve waited sooo looong!!!! 😅
White on white everything feels stark and sterile to me. But white as a foundation to start layering is key! 👍
@@JulieKhuu☺️
I went from cream in my condo to dark cherry in my house. The dark is SO hard to take care of, and you can see every piece of dust, grease, fingerprints, etc.
It might be the shiny-ish finish! I HATE them.
Yes to the color palette series please! Thank you for all your advise, love that you are simple and honest, practical and humble.
Thank you for watching and sharing feedback Ginger 🙏🏻☺️💖
I put colours together that are probably not normally seen together, for instance my hallway has the old fashioned moulding halfway up the wall, so the bottom half is a dark lilac but not purple and the top half above the moulding is white, the paintings are of old trams and a steam train with red and the photograph gallery is of my partner racing a red sports bike on a race track, with a white shoe cabinet on the wall and a red enamelled dish for keys. The frames and coat rack are light oak. This is then reflected in the kitchen, one lilac wall, red accents, oak cabinets. I have used saturated colours in all the rooms, most people probably dont like that but I like art deco, so there are jewel tones of colour throughout, including orange and green in my home office, mainly from accents, art deco glass but also rugs and cushions.
I love the way lilac and red combine to create a very unique combination, so fresh and vibrant at the same time 💜❤️
Sounds cool.
I totally agree with your last tip, but I also balk at it because that means for 5-10 years you're living in a house with "filler" furniture. I really don't want to live years of my life with a sofa or a dining table that is just "okay" -- it serves its purpose, but I don't really like it. I love the idea of carefully curating but I also hate the idea of being surrounded by so-so stuff for long periods. It's really a conundrum.
When filler furniture is from your previous design, you take time to redesign a new space to replace all at once. Unless you’re on a budget of course, take your time to source the items you use the most first. 🤗
I agree 💯 percent julie. Your home is absolutely gorgeous.
Thank you so much Constantine 🙏🏻☺️💖
Agree, love that Julie uses such beautiful colors. (That green cabinet!) There is another UA-camr I watch occasionally and not to disparate her but she seems to decorate with the colors that everyone else seems to use. It’s boring frankly.
I would love a "color theory " series!
Awesome, I’ll queue it up Christy! Thank you for watching 💗🙏🏻
i love julie and her videos
Thank you so much for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Yes, please do a series on decorating with specific colors. I would one on blues and grays
You got it Anne, I’m queuing both these colors up! 💙🩶
omg, I figured it would suck that it might take me 5-6 years to finish my main living space because I'm broke and I'm trying to source furniture as economically as I can, but hearing that you don't finish a room asap is reassuring!
I’m 8 years in and only 2 out of 10 spaces are “finished” 😂
Same here. I moved and now my furniture doesn’t fit the space!
Likewise ! I'm in the same boat , am taken by the design elements and now reassured, Ta :)
I'm closing on a huge house. Thanks for bringing me back down, i don't have to rush to furnish every space. I can take my time
This is your best video ever!! I always wondered about the color palette as many of us are not able to change the entire decor and furnishings in one giant swoop. I’ve been working on major repairs and updates for almost three years which started with tearing out the fireplace and chimney due to a major leak. When replacing/ repairing/updating (budget busting) basically everything, new furnishings were not an option. My decorator friend suggested a lot more wall color which was out of my comfort zone but I went with her vision. After remixing accessories plus using a ton of black, everything looks more pulled together than previously. Even the 90’s pine bedroom set was given new life with a more dramatic wall color and losing the mirror. My house looks like a comfortable home and not a magazine photo shoot which works well for me.
Sure, magazine worthy spaces are perfect for the ‘gram, but just not realistic for everyday living. I want guests to feel comfortable in my space, put a drink down and kick your feet up! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Great! Thanks a lot, full of inspiration! Thank you for sharing!
Black, gold and touches of white really interest me as far as a color palette. Would love to hear your thoughts and see examples of this color grouping in room designs.
Let me add this to my list Kathleen, thank you for watching! 🙏🏻☺️
Great advice, love to make a list for unfinished rooms 🙏🏻💕
Wonderful series!! I agree 100% with you! Thank you.
Thank you for watching Stella! 🙏🏻☺️
Sooo wonderful, as usual. I'd love a series on color palette. Always so helpful and entertaining.
Julie you surprised me. I loved this video!!! I totally agree with you and I thought I was off. Thank you and take care ❤
Thank you for watching Debbie! ☺️🙏🏻
Very informative video!! Thanks so much!!!
Thank you for watching Lola 🙏🏻☺️
100% spot on with the last tip: Never settle just take your time with finding what you love
Every time I settle, I spend more money replacing those Ho-hum items 😆
Julieeee!!💜💜💜 Love seeing your posts in my feed.
Yay! Thank you! Happy holidays!! 🎄☃️❄️
So glad we don't need a very cohesive color palate, I'd get bored with it! I moved from rainy Hawaii to sunny Savannah, GA where there is plenty of quality furniture. Workmanship is important to me, so I shop at consignment stores in expensive neighborhoods & FB Marketplace, & I pay 10% of retail. I buy what speaks to me & figure out how to make it work. My house is tiny, 913 SF & scale is critical, so I measure everything before making a decision. Thanks for another excellent video!
The smaller the space, the more thoughtful we can be with our purchases. Agreed Rosemary! 💖
New subscriber here. I totally agree with all of your tips. I don't have a color scheme either, although neutrals are my base. I also have personal photos out and around even though some designers say it's a no-no. I don't follow trends, just what I love. Happy to have found your channel!
Do what you love, you will always get it right 🙌☺️🩷
Why in the world would a person not have photos of people they love? Makes me happy to see them!! I don't live in a depersonalized hotel.
12/31/2023 Julie I like very much your daughters room, when looking at it, it makes ME feel cozy & comfy, the colors are soothing to me. I am not someone who like to fill the walls with art or pictures. I like the walls in all of my space to be free, is my opinion. If I want to draw the eye up I like a beautiful Light fixture or a tall plant. Over the years since 2015 I have worked on becoming accustom to a more minimal look, free of clutter. I can do this because my son is 27 and has his own space. Not trying to be an extremist minimalist no I don't care for that either but being as that am 59 now and 60 is coming in April I don't want to be bogged down with so much. I read an email yesterday on "Swedish Death Cleaning" its recommended for those who are 60 to start doing. And I do agree. Well Julie Happy New Year Eve! I've spent the day watching your videos.
It’s great to hear the thought process behind your own personal style!
Thank you for watching! It’s important to share the why’s behind my designs ☺️🙏🏻💖
I would love to see videos about specific colors!
Loved the last tip! As a minimalist, it takes me time to find each intentional piece. And I hate the "drab" in-between space before getting that warm & comfy feeling. Minimal but not an asylum, lol.
I have lived with enough filler furniture to know that I don’t want to live that way forever 😅
I loooooooove your media cabinet! So beautiful!
Thank you so much! This is why I love the lived-in look, especially against newer finds 💚
Another great video Julie, thanks.
Thank you for watching Lynne 🙏🏻☺️
Like you-I don’t have a color scheme throughout my home-I just like color too much. I do try to anchor spaces with neutrals, however. I also, like you mentioned, have black in all of my spaces. For example my husband and I own a log cabin on a lake- the wood everywhere was just too much for me, so I painted all the window and door frames black. What an impact! There is something rich and sophisticated about it.
Absolutely 🖤 Black has the capacity to neutralize and modernize any space! Love it 🙌
Just bumped into this channel and I love it. I have already subscribed
Welcome Stella! Thank you for watching and supporting the channel, pls let me know what you want to see next 🙏🏻☺️💖
I loved this video, as usual! :) I like "do's and don'ts" so keep em' coming please! :)
Yay! More coming today Jackie 🙌
I love this episode! I don’t do matching prices either…except for the bookshelves and lamps! I feel seen😄
Yes! Haha 🙌
How about a video on when to use symmetry vs when it’s ok not to use it?
I love this idea David! Symmetry is up to you to determine if you desire that look and feel. I’ll queue it up 🙏🏻☺️
Love your new urban outfitters bookcases flanking your dining couch. The difference in shape really enhances the couch as well as the entire room. Score!
Totally! I had been wanting those cabinets for so long, they went up in price, then down. I immediately snagged two and now they’re back up! 😳😅
@JulieKhuu double lucky you!!! Thats crazy! 😁
I love your videos!! Very helpful!
And I love your lipstick color! Mind sharing the brand/color? Looks great on you!
The pix you showed when you were talking about it, looked VERY analogous if not, one hue, tinted + toned! Gosh, I love your media cabinet. Beautiful.
I think what I liked best about your home was that people, like, your children, family, you, friends -- are not "extra". The human beings coming into the room are actually the highlight.
There’s nothing better than a home that’s totally lived in and enjoyed 🫶🏻
We have a full matched bedroom set. I balked, but my husband loved it. He has little say in the contents of our home. So he won this one. I had a hard time explaining my side because we were replacing an antique mahogany bedroom "suite" of furniture. (One I had moved in with years ago.) Which translates to a matchy matchy set.
Sometimes we only know what we see, I totally get it ☺️
My husband is the same way, our bedroom suite is all matchy but I work around it with different table scapes, different pictures over each nightstand, put the mirror that “went” with the dresser on the tall chest of drawers and the TV (again on hubby’s insistence) is mounted over my dresser so the dresser acts not just a clothes storage but as a console for the TV and also for more tablescape items. There is a lot of pieces in my home that my husband has insisted on but that I work around, we are looking at new living room furniture and I told him that matching sets will not be in the wheelhouse, and neither will marshmallow sofas with recliners in it (Our current set) and he just said “we’ll see” but he knows I am done with oversized living room furniture in our small and awkward living room.
I have been admiring that media chest over the years, always stunning in the background. Alas, I don't have a media cabinet. But, I made the move and painted the walls of my guest bathroom jade green. Love it!
Pretty!! I never regret those bold moves I made 🙌💚
Thanks for the last tip... I'm relieved 😊
I blame those 1-hr renovation shows 😆
What? That is just crazy! And here I am, in a new condo putting in some form of BLACK in every room!!!????? Eeek 😢 My countertop could not be changed but the black wall, knobs, black faucet, black marble accessories, black displays look fabulous! Now I’m moving into the stairs and dining room and stairs!!!
Yessss here for all the edgy black accents 🖤🖤🖤
Thanks again for great content. Would definitely be interested in your color theory video
I would be very interested also. Thanks for a great video.
Thank you for watching and sharing feedback!
The “Decorating with (Insert Colour Here)” series sounds cool! I love it!
Thank you Brandon! Let me work on this one, any colors you’d like to see first? 🤗
I do have a cohesive color palette, the accent color being orange. I've used warm grays, brown wood, and metals.
Love how these colors act as a great foundation for such a bold hue!
The last tip calmed me down so much ☺ Thanks Julie!
Haha take it slow! 🙌💗
Love your idea of longevity and anchoring in black.
Black accents make every space feel updated, yet timeless 🖤
Hi Julie!
Great video and yes please do a series on colors! Would love to see that. I love your media console. It’s a beautiful color and a nice contrast with the velvet sofa. Also like the arched cabinet storage in the DR. I paint my rooms based on their use so my color scheme is a collection of neutrals: bm navajo white and nature based colors bm adobe dust Nantucket grey cayman island and that’s just one floor. I don’t use white for walls only for ceilings. It’s just too high maintenance. And I ripped out all my white flooring. I live in an older house but I like the eclectic look of it. I call it a converted bungalow😂. You look terrific! 🥰🥰👏🏻
I love an eclectic mix because my passion for design spans so many styles and eras! Best to allow the home to evolve alongside our growing family and needs ☺️💖
Thank you. Yes to color series pls include the feng shui principles of color
You got it Jamie Lynne! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Yes..please..colour palette information..🎨
You got it Charmaine! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
This is great 😀 loving your daughter’s bedroom 🧡
I still need to finish it, but we’re very close to the reveal ☺️
Your house is absolutely beautiful, Julie. I especially love how airy it is, tons of windows! I'm watching your videos to get my creative juices flowing. I love how you've decorated, youre my inspiration ❤
I bought this home because of all the windows! Love this about mid century design. Thank you for the love and support babe! 💖
Please do the colour scheme videos. Love your channel.
This was so helpful! ❤😊
Thank you for watching! 🙏🏻💖
Yes to color series!!
Thank you for watching Matt! 🙏🏻☺️
BEST tip for me 2Julie, the dining mix and match.
Mixing is the fun part and allows us to open our design up to different opportunities 😍
Doing up a new home is like painting on a blank canvas... the first few pieces set the tone and you build from there.
Definitely would love a color pallete series. ❤
Will work on it now, thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Love it!
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
I group like colors together. It keeps things calm, visually. So even if they are saturated colors, it still looks cohesive.
Perfect solution so not one single color jumps out at you 👏🏻
Lots of ideas I got from watching your videos ❤❤❤❤❤
Awesome, thank you for watching Addy! 💗☺️🙏🏻
😅 you should love my old fixer-upper , miss matched furniture, home. Not on purpose just things that were hand me downs from family and friends. Today im really focused on decluttering as my house is small. If i dont 100% love it, it goes.
Julie your house is gorgeous and so unique!!
Thank you so much Cynthia! I love this house, but I do need more space! 😆
Definitely do a video on decorating with blues
You got it! I’ll line it up next 💙
Because you asked, for kitchen /bath reno, I don’t copy trendy material combos (light wood cabs with black countertop, or island cabs in color of the moment, or counter slab repeated on wall), I use patina brass instead of trendy shade of gold
Love unlacquered brass, a rotating fav in our studio ✨
As a lover of color coordination, I totally understand why she's not choosing a cohesive color palette. If that's part of her personality then it can be one of the reasons why her home is unique from others. 😉😍
Yup, you do you! 🙌 I’m a maximalist who is exposed to so much in terms of design. I find a cohesive color palette that is carried throughout the entire home rather restrictive for me, personally 😉
I agree completely😊
Thank you for watching Valeria ☺️🙏🏻
Love your jade green media cabinet so much. I'm green with envy😊.
It’s one of the those statement pieces I’ll keep forever 💚
@@JulieKhuuI would never part with it either.
Nice series! I would love to see a segment that talks about how you blend/change styles as you move from one section of a room to another. For example, you have a section dedicated to media with the consignment couch and the jade sideboard. How does that match/not match the rest of the room?
This lounge is off to one corner of my open concept living area. It does not “match” any other room, but instead feels like a cozy little nook. My scattered plants make the home feel more cohesive 🪴 Can’t wait to do the home tour so y’all see how I carry the design from space to space
@@JulieKhuu Excellent! Im looking forward to it.
I agree with everything you said, especially the colour palette. I find it too constrictive, and our styles change, but we can't afford to throw everything out to buy everything new. Our styles evolve over the years, and those ars the homes that have the most character. I agree that fixer uppers are so much more charming.
I am not saying to be out of date in home decor, but to be timeless.
You nailed this!❤
The more lived in the better! I love rooms that tell the stories of their owners 🖼️
Would love a video on how to design with a certain colour. I love all your designs. Glad that you express to pick what inspires your own taste. And not to have the designer tv homes!!! Refreshingly honest!!😊
Thank you for watching Tammy! 🙏🏻☺️
Thank you Julie, I love your videos, and I resonate a lot with your view of design, even sometimes I check other videos, to see what everyone is decorating with and find inspiration, today 's world seems to me that neutrals are the way to go. And love neutrals myself, and can brig some calm.. But.I feel like I m always watching the same video, or evyone is living in the same home lol. My opinion, seem that they lack of personality and history . I love to pick objects that means something to me and not be attach to certain trend or vibe. And the matchy matchy note, I am more eclectic and my husband is the matchy one haha. Always in struggle in that area ha!.Thank you so much, and for making an example that been cohesive is not necessary to create a beautiful space and home. Cheers
Your home is up to you to furnish, fill, and enjoy! Check out the first episode of this series where I talk about staying in your own lane, regardless of who is critiquing your space. I was able to refine my (still) evolving style by the critics and naysayers 😂
I love symmetry too
I love your idea for a colour palette playlist. I'm struggling so much with how to use the colours I love in my living room or even if they suit the (small & dark) room at all
Yay, I’m glad there’s interest! Let me know what colors you want to see first ☺️
Clear blues, plum, & leaf green as in live plants, not necessairly together. Also cinnamon, I painted a large bedroom in a previous home with that color & it worked so much better than a light color. @@JulieKhuu
@@JulieKhuu I really love blue greens & green blues of all shades & tones but I also want a cosy feel. I also would love to incorporate a global traveller style (or what my Mother calls posh hippy) with Indian, Chinese, Japanese style elements. Think I might be asking for the moon on a stick!
I totally agree!
Thank you for watching Marie! 🙏🏻☺️
A color series would be amazing
It’s coming up love! Let me know what colors you’re interested in first 🤗
Yes for color palettes!!!
Yay! It’s coming up 💗
I watch your channel a lot and have gotten some great ideas. My first home without much money or space was beige all the way through adding color to each with pops of the color to lead from one room to the next. It worked! Now being retired I’m back into a small space but with living room dining area and kitchen open to each other. Challenging paint choices and oblong living area with linai double sliders on one side, windows in front a nd entrance leaves no wall at all and only one wall with no distractions and it’s also slanted! Don’t have enough dollars for redo so each year usually change one thing. I may have it finished for the funeral crowd! Lol. Love your channel however I buy resale or repurpose a lot of my stuff.
Haha Dolores, you’re hilarious! Design the home for you to enjoy now, your tastes will evolve along the way. Thank you for your continuing support 🙏🏻💕
Great Video
Thank you for watching ☺️🙏🏻
I’ve been here for 3 years now. I have not finished my house yet. Now, I don’t feel so bad! I worked on my backyard all summer. Now, I’m working on my kitchen/living room.
One at a time to get the design done right 🙌
Thank you.
Thank you for watching Kenneth! 🙏🏻☺️
Totally agree
Thank you for watching Lucy!
On a more rudimary level (beyond inspiration), the human eye requires variation and diversity in color and pattern to keep wandering and continue to engage.
Yay for limewash!
Love the earthy, organic vibe
I would love the color video!
Thank you for watching Bethany! Let me know what colors you want to see first! 🙌☺️
@@JulieKhuu I would love to see blues and greens. I've been decorating my home with blues and greens, with a few splashes of neutrals and corals. I love these colors as they remind me of a peaceful day at the beach. I'm hoping I don't end up with too much color where it looks tacky... it's like blues and greens are my neutrals. I always pick very muted versions though. Also trying to figure out ways to incorporate black to ground the spaces.
Yes! Pls! I want to know how to incorporate GREEN💚💚
I’ll line green up Alma! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Agreed! Green is one of my favorite neutrals 💚
For palette, I make one at the start of the project, to give a direction. But later on, as I add or replace stuff, the palette will naturally expend. I always had good sense of what would fit and what would clash, but I understand some people needs more guidance.
As for matchy-matchy, I have a table and chairs set, which was fitting the decor of my last apartment, but since the table is very basic modern and the chairs have more detail and fabrics, the elements are contrasting enough, while being in the exact same wood color. I assume my laziness on this one. xD
I also have a matching set in my bedroom, however... it's the used set my grand-mother bought from her neighbor for her wedding back in 1940. On the back of the mirror, it says 1913. The dresser and the "washstand" if I understand the era's furniture names correctly. They have been together since before my grand-mother was born (1918), these two will stay together. ^__^
Yeah, I want to delude myself into thinking that buying a matching set from a shop is lazy, but having a antic matching set is luxury. xD
You found the loophole Marianne! YES to matching antiques with sentimental value!! I wouldn’t give up that set either 🙌😉
You are such a beautiful, talented person, but I don’t always agree with you! Sorry, but I love beautiful matching pieces-I am a perfectionist and matching seems to calm me. I do love antique, vintage, colorful, etc. pieces to decorate with! Also, I love theme rooms especially for kids room. You do beautiful work, but as you get older, I do think you will change your mind on some of your ideas! God bless you and your beautiful family.❤️🙏🏻😀
Absolutely Sherry! 👍 I would have balked at some of my tips years ago. And will probably do so until I die 😂
Can you share how you painted your daughter's wall??? It's great!
I didn’t do it, my finisher did ☺️ I only made him a small sample to replicate. But I am happy to show you that process!
Please Please Please!!! Julie do rooms that are all black and/or just as an accent and/or a ceiling. I've been thinking of doing my ceiling black but I'm apprehensive 🖤🖤🖤
I have an awesome video called decorating with black! Check it out 🖤☺️
@@JulieKhuu thank you so much... I'm going to watch it right now!
Please make a playlist on colours!
Awesome, thank you for sharing feedback!
I'd love a color based set of videos.
You got it, thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Great tips but l disagree with a 3 seater sofa and matching loveseat to be outdated. My other furniture pieces: slimline recliner, accent chair, coffee table, side tables are different from each other.
I agree with matching nightstands/bedside tables but having a twist with different lamps as long as there is an element that unites them: colour, height, vibe etc.
I'm very much like you in regard to having a multi palette throughout my home. My 4 bedrooms have their own personality with different accent wall paint colours, wall art, bedheads and light fixtures.
I love being able to walk from space to space and be completely immersed in a different feeling Maria 🙌
Hating on gray is so two years ago. It’s a useful neutral and not going away.
Lol I hated on gray two years ago and will do so until it comes back with a vengeance in 20yrs 😆🩶
Maybe you are going for an eclectic design Julie 😊 a lot of other people including me are not like you 😅
Totally interested in the series of blue and green accents to blend with neutrals❤
Which is why this video is titled “Things I Don’t Do” lol emphasis on “I”
Just sharing what works for me and to help relieve some design pressure along the way ☺️
Anything with Monochromatic/color drenched rooms would be awesome
So much eye candy, I’ll work on this series next! 👍
Do you have a video on how you did your daughters walls? The terracotta wall i believe.
My daughters’ room makeover is coming up soon with details on the wall finish 🤗
I've been "decorating" my home for 40 years. My husband just doesn't understand this concept. We are moving into an apartment and I cannot wait to start over.
Preferences change, our styles evolve. No one stays stagnant, nor should our homes 🥰🙌
I imagine these video are a lot of work to create. I want you to know that I appreciate you.
Thank you for watching and stopping by to comment. I really appreciate the feedback Monica 🙏🏻💖
Can you do a video of decorating with purple?
Absolutely, I’m lining it up for my new color series 💜
Hey Julie! A color video would be appreciated. I’m still enjoying g my Ben Moore Palladian blue walls, but want to change it after 5 years. Is there anyway we can submit photos to you of our spaces and get some ideas? Thanks! Been a fan of your channel for years now and ❤
Absolutely! I have a series where I answer your DM’s if you’re selected to be featured. You can submit via IG Krisann!
Hi Julie, I've seen a few videos and I know you encourage people to mixmatch a room, to add a rug and to use your ceiling as a fifth wall that can also be decorated. What if for psychological reasons you want a semi-low-stimulus house. How do you apply those "rules"(/suggestions)?
Also, what if you want a dark (let's say true black) colour on your TV wall to contrast the screen and create more vibrant screen colours. How to counterbalance that so the that black colour doesn't stand out negatively while not adding to much contrasting bits and bobs on that particular wall?
If all your walls are dark in a closed-off media room, the black wall will make sense! But if you watch TV in a common area of your home, the black will stand out unless you add additional black elements like decor, lighting, and artwork to help tie it all in. Tone-on-tone/ minimal contract works best for low-stimulus spaces. When nothing stands out, it really calms the mind 🖤
I have a dark wood 5-piece bedroom set. I don’t have the budget to replace all. What item do you think I should replace that would have the biggest impact to break up the matchup look? Thanks Julie
Either the bed or nightstands. Pick your favorite and try sourcing secondhand on FB marketplace for great quality gently used furniture. You can always break the set up and use them for different rooms in the home too ☺️
