I have decorated with ALL of these items in the past 🙈 and lemme tell ya, simply REMOVING the offensive items will breathe new life into your grown up space! Which decor item is the worst of the worst?!

For the word art aspect, I have a silly story for you! I wear a blue sweater that says “PINK” on it. It’s from Victoria secret 😂 I can confirm you saying “just because it says fashion, does it really mean it’s fashion” 😂 my sweater definitely isn’t PINK but I love throwing people off. Lol

In my opinion, something is only a decorating 'mistake' if its only purpose is to impress others, rather than bring joy to the person using or inhabiting the space.

Decorating goes far beyond a nice room. The biggest mistake I made for over 30yrs was to live with a hoarder who didn’t want any decorations (dust collectors) or me to show my personality in the house. He decorated with boxes, paper work and junk over every surface including walkways and floors. Making someone feel like they’re not important enough to live in their own home or sleep in their own bed is a form of abuse. I felt like we never had a home, just a house for his stuff. It was implied he’d complain if I wanted to put artwork up. Having my home reflect me and allow me to thrive is the best mental health. ❤

@@JulieKhuu Thanks Julie. I’m sure I’m not the only person in this situation so I hope what I’ve said makes someone else think about how they’re made to feel in their home, how they want to feel and if they can carve out a little space to make themselves feel wonderful if they stay there. I didn’t recognise how important it was to me for decades.

I struggled with that! I searched for almost a year looking for a liquor cabinet. Trust me it is not as easy as it seems. Most are either small, or show it all anyway or too modern. I finally found a cabinet. I think it came from the 1940s or 50s. Beautiful and affordable. I just did not feel right having all the bottles just out in the open.

I’m painting the walls white and they are demanding a lot of neg space and are stealing the show as it’s so calming. I have to keep going back to my descriptive words in my mood board to remind myself it’s ok and that I can change out all the art as often as I want. Have an awesome day!

If you have ever visited Mediterranean places those beads will remind you of those white & airy interiors. They are oversized for Hamptons interiors ( very large furniture) so it obviously must be proportionate to the size of the decorations & bowls . I wouldn’t use oversized beads in small apartments but would still use these beads in smaller size in an organic interior because that chain is a common denominator of many religions… something saying slow down, reflect and pray …

Great video Julie. My little girl is a stuffed animal fanatic! I bought a zippered bean bag cover and we filled it with her stuffies and a couple of her favorite blankets. It is so soft and comfortable and now she can rotate them in and out as she pleases. Her room is so much neater and uncluttered now, and she loves her bean bag. I really dislike trends. I would never display a Tom Ford coffee table book just because you see them in every design show and magazine around. But I have to confess, I did indulge in a strand of wooden beads that I still really enjoy. They are like jewelry to me for my foyer table. So I guess their purpose is they make me smile. When I first started dating my now husband, he loved to give me fresh flowers for no reason. Unfortunately, my previous boyfriend had only given me flowers for an apology. After I married my husband, he told me that he wanted me to have fresh flowers all the time but understood my baggage. He put money into our budget for fresh flowers & each week, I had that amount to go to the local farmers market or wherever I chose & could pick my flowers out myself. This way I got the fresh flowers he wanted me to have & I knew there was no underlying reason for them. I have since gotten over that issue but I stopped buying the flowers. I think I’m going to go back to it. The house does have a different feel with fresh flowers. I think I’m going to bring them back every week. Thanks for the reminder!
As far as the word art, I have a few of them…mostly based on scripture. I have started to paint the inspirational word art/scripture on the wall & then painting over it. I have a psalm painted over my doors about welcoming friends but it is underneath the actual wall color. The prayer is always there but out of sight.

My favorite video from you ever!!! Seriously makes so much sense, except I just can’t do artificial flowers, or plants, and prefer dead/dried flowers, and real plants, same with art, I just recently got rid of all the homegoods art, etc, and replaced with real art, and handmade, loving the vintage/handmade style vibes right now! ❤

Before getting to the decor I just want to say I love your hair. It just looks so beautiful and chic. I hate acrylic furniture. It is the worst of the worst. For me it always looks cheap. I do not like the word art either. A problem for me is the push to change your decor for every holiday season. It keeps your home in a constant state of fluctuation and where does one store all that stuff. Another problem that creeps into my home decor is pet toys. My daughter has a Bark Box subscription. The dogs love bark box day and the toys for about 15 minutes then they just become clutter that she doesn't want to throw away because she spent money on them.

STUFFED ANIMALS - Don't throw these away please. When these toys are no longer suitable for your children, donate them to an animal shelter. Any condition is fine. Stuffed toys are a joy and comfort for puppies and young dogs. The toys do get torn to shreds which is why a steady supply is appreciated.

Word art. I agree with you about the kind that you buy at Home Goods, with silly inspirational quotes or obvious statements like "in this kitchen we cook food" or what not. But there's also other kinds of word art that have nothing to do with it, so it's not really fair to veto all of it as if they're equivalent. Conceptual artists like Jenny Holzer or Kay Rosen for example, who take our relationship with words and fonts to the next level. Political artists from the 70s playing with language and societal expectations. Islamic and Chinese calligraphers who build on thousands of years of cultural practices. These are definitely kinds of word art worth having on your walls.

    Hi Julie
Fresh cut flowers just bring happiness to me. You can get them inexpensively at some grocery stores. Carnations last a long time and Peruvian Lilies too. I like small bud vases on a windowsill. I no longer have any of the things you talk about here. But when my children were young I had plastic chairs and tables for them and trophies in their rooms. Juvenile magazines and books in book racks were in the den. Stuffed animals galore. I was able to give away many of them. Most won at arcades. My son would make a mountain of them and I took a picture and then later on I gave them away but kept the memory! I only kept the most sentimental ones. So I still have a bag of them in my attic. The kids can decide what to keep of those. I like strip lighting in my desk armoire but I usually use the warm tones. They do the trick. The only beads I have in my house are rosary beads and they are in almost every room but not noticeable. No word art either. I just never wanted to spend any money on it. I like your haircut! Do you do it so you can make a ponytail and not have it fall out in the front? That’s what I like about the longer in the front cut. ❤🥰🥰👍🏻Margaret

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  11 місяців тому +1

That’s what I do too Margaret! Before I purge/ donate items, I make sure to take pictures of it. I can keep these memories forever, but the bulky items don’t need to live in my home and take up more space. I have SO much hair. This cut makes it look longer in the front so my stylist can texture and take away some bulkiness in the back 😊

Not me at 34 with a chair in my bedroom that has cat beanie babies and one cat squishmallow on it lol. It's absolutely not aesthetic and I'm not sure it'll stay but at the same time it brings me joy to see. That chair was also the spot my old cat spent her last day in and it's become a memorial of sorts (I have a day of the dead squishmallow cat that sits on the chair) and for some reason covering it in cat beanie babies makes me less sad. The rest of my bedroom is intentional and beautiful but yeah I struggle to let go of the beanies on the chair.

Re Flowers, I purchased an array of long stemmed silk flowers over 20 years ago, back then each stem cost $15, for a total of nearly $100. I lot of money back then. They are still going strong, I placed them in a simple glass vase and filled the bottom with glass pebbles, once a month I simply rinse them off with plain water, and pat dry. They are still as beautiful and natural looking as the day I bought them. The key is buy stems that look real and are high quality, and keep them clean and free of dust!

One will be a glaze, I have tissue paper glued to 3 of my walls, behind the bed is my headboard wall mounted and framed squared off and flanked by mirrors to each adjoinging side wall will pendants hanging over nightstands [ dogs knock off lamps] 😂 so that entire wall is what you see upon entering and it's all hardscape. I opened & emptied the 2x5ft closet recessed & styled the dresser in there, mounted the fireplace in the wall at the foot of the bed and turned my spare bedroom into a closet❤ moved the tall chest in there, cut the armoire off on the back to make it 18 " deep not 36 and mounted it to the top of an older dresser then painted them the same color. Moved the plastic storage to the garage😂

Haha I love that! Which is why I kept “My kids have four feet” 🐾 for so long! It’s just funny 😆

I feel like I made this video. I absolutely hate when words boss me around while they're hanging on a wall. "Eat. Gather. Wash your hands. Brush your teeth. In this house we...." I do think there is a place for certain words, but not the bossy ones. 😀 I have NEVER understood the beads either. However, you just gave me an idea of what to do with a set of meditation beads I purchased that my wedding officiant in Maui handmade in order to raise money after the fires. Each bead is made of a different material that holds a certain significance. I think I'll drape those somewhere, since they are so pretty and meaningful and just sitting in my nightstand drawer.

Thanks Julie!!! Always love your videos. The only word art I had was a Welcome sign. I am assuming you aren’t keen to nursery/kids rooms with the child’s name on the wall :)) I am surprised you didn’t mention it. I never understood dried florals but it is really trendy during the fall season. I have started to purchase a few (pods, seeds, wheat, grasses) for the fall only.

I specified those Louis Ghost chairs for a client bc they loved the look. Didn’t last one season in their home before they swapped it out for cushioned upholstered dining chairs 😅

Hola Julie, thanks for another informative video.
Please advise if real flowers/plants are allowed in the bedroom.
    Thank you.

Feng Shui guides against plants in the bedroom because they emit too much active Yang energy in a resting Yin space. You may use them if you’re trying to combat negative chi like a poison arrow or inauspicious stale energy. It’s conditional 💐

I am the exact opposite. I love real plants in the bedroom to oxygenate the space. This is the first video of yours that I'm seeing and I enjoyed it but I'm not that up to speed with feng shut
