I paid $600.00 for mine at 139,000 miles and now I'm pushing 180,000 and she still has as much power As the day she was manufactured. I've driven it as far south as Miami from Central Alabama and I've now made it to Chesapeake Beach.
Wow good deal. I bought a 2003 Ford Explorer with 107,000 miles for $2,950. After I drove it back home I noticed the 4-wheel low button was illuminated so it's stuck in 4-wheel low the power windows on the driver side front and back don't work and it has worn out tires so you got a great deal on yours LoL
Mine just like it except Pacific Green with green interior. Got it 3 years ago, love that truck!! And the 4x4 means I can get over the snow and ice without shoveling.
I like the old generation and the current generation explorer but people forget about how good the older generation explorer because everybody thinks that newer is better and sometimes newer can be more terrible. I don't like the fact that people just say "Oh the older Generation of this vehicle is good enough" but my mom says as long as it gets from point A to point B it can do an excellent job at what it has done for other families. You get the point. Older is the greater.
The SOHC version was introduced in 1997 in the Ford Explorer, alongside the original pushrod version. It features a variable length intake manifold and produces 210 hp (157 kW) and 254 lb·ft (344 N·m)
I really wanted the 1998 explorer as my first car. It was our family car and we had it ever since I were a kid, till we sold it for an F-150. I get so much nostalgia from it, I feel like its looked down upon in the car community. I just love it so much, I get the most nostalgia from it, from the way the seatbelt chime sounds to the thunk of the doors shutting to the sound of the engine. I wish he went into abit more depth about it and took it for a test drive and pushed it hard, but you cant do that with all those for sell stickers blocking the wind screen
Brice Graham I feel exactly the same with the 97-2003 f-150, my dad had a 02 when I was a kid and every sound and chime it made is nostalgic, I'm currently in the process of trying to get one myself
Really good car ive got 2 using one as spairs but absolutely amazing car they weren't so popular in the uk so they only sold them up 2000 and was a real bargain got my second one for £300 with gas conversion and timing chain changed too and full leather , tv dvd radio screen. Ford needs to bring them back to the UK
I'm so jealous! I have a 1997 XLT model with over 215,000 original miles, and running great! I just wish mine was that clean! Paint is fading, and the suspension needs replacing, but really awesome!
Radioactive tool shed my explorer was a hand-me-down car. My parents bought a 1996 explorer limited 5.0 v8 back in 2000. I rode home from the hospital in it when I was born 😁. I woke up every day of my life seeing this car. And I absolutely love owing it to myself now. Good luck on getting your explorer! Cheers!
Dude i have a similar story i rode home in a 2001 ford Explorer sport back in 2004 when i was born sadly the transmission died around 2007 thin my grandma got a 2005 ford Escape that she still has today
I drive a 98 Explorer XLT. Very reliable. It's only 2 wheel drive, so it's harsh in the winter time. It also has leather seats versus the cloth in this one. I personally love the Explorer. I'm not a fan of the newer ones.
idk if im right but, Ford vehicles imo were always larger (in size) compared to its competitors. This gen explorer is much larger than the passport,4runner, and grand cherokee of that era
You forgot to mention safety features like the nature of the automatic 4WD when slippage is detected, the driver and passenger air bags, anti-lock brakes. These are especially important on those old beasts because if you're coming from a passenger car you will find the first 3 generations of explorer to be top/rear heavy, not liking to change directions or stop fast... a brick on wheels lol.
@@iqinsanity I could be wrong feel free to correct but the ones that had auto 4WD for the "control track" feature always display the options on the switch as, "Auto, Lo, Hi" and the ones that didn't have the automatic 4WD said "2wd, Lo, Hi." My 97 XLT says "Auto," and it's a V6 SOHC.
+AtomicCheeseburger69 The way it's usually done is a steam cleaning then a can of clear coat paint. Unfortunately the clear coat looks good sitting on the lot but once you drive it a bit the engine heat makes it turn cloudy and peel. For that reason you'd be better off using silicone spray and just on wiring, rubber hoses, and plastic parts.
It's fine offroad, but for a couple things. You'd want more aggressive off-road tires, and often larger ones and a lift kit to get more ground clearance and wheel well clearance.. If the terrain is smoother you won't need that, for shallow snow or muddy roads, etc. If you just want to start with more ground clearance stock, get a jeep SUV instead, but again most would think about tires and a lift kit.
Never knew these had the same dashboard and same front bench seat options as the Ranger Pickup then! Guessing this was also related to the Aerostar too!
+BillyBozen Don't get one with that many miles unless it has the V8 engine. The SOHC 4L V6 engine in these is prone to timing chain failure around 150K+ miles and the entire engine has to be pulled to change all 3 chains/guides/tensioners which is going to cost enough that most are sent to a junkyard for scrap at that point.
***** Actually I have one, and know how to maintain it, and you're basically just plain wrong. There is no magic maintenance that changes the FACT that the #1 cause of premature engine failure on any explorer is isolated to the timing chain components on the V6 SOHC. There is absolutely nothing you can do maintenance wish to change the lifespan of that subsystem, besides using quality oil and changing it as you're supposed to, which is routine maintenance on any of them and does not fix the problem. Please stop pretending to know things you don't. There are 2 large explorer forums on the internet and more for other ford vehicles with the same engine and issues where you can plainly see evidence of what I'm talking about.
***** Hilarious that you take that attitude towards someone who owns one of these and has done all the maintenance and repairs on it from brand new. Disagree all you want but the fact remains that the 4L SOHC engine which was the most popular in this model year (though there was also the V6 and V8 pushrod version offered in limited quantities), is prone to timing component failure even if you maintain it PERFECTLY. Hint: This is why those timing chain components have been redesigned at least twice in subsequent years between then and the switch to the 3.5L that replaced it. Instead of learning anything you post mindless profanity and racism. Obviously you will go far in life with that attitude.
The Mountaineer is similar spec to the XLT / Sport V8 option, all of them started with V8 and then later you had the option to pick a V6 instead. The Explorers always had the option of either V6 or V8 in the Sport / Eddie Bauer / XLT options.
“This is one of the best SUVS ever made.” You’re dang right it is I’ve had my ‘98 Explorer for over a year now, and it’s sheer perfection.
ive had mine for over 20 years XD- my grandparents gave it to my dad and my dad is now giving it to me
Just got mine bro in great condition w new tires
My Dad just bought a ‘98 Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition with 70,000 miles. Absolute tank. Not a spec of rust (never winter driver!).
I paid $600.00 for mine at 139,000 miles and now I'm pushing 180,000 and she still has as much power As the day she was manufactured. I've driven it as far south as Miami from Central Alabama and I've now made it to Chesapeake Beach.

I’m picking up one in the morning for $400 holiday deal 🍾 can’t wait !
I agree with you, I just bought one but it is the two door version, perfect for haul the quad and go everywhere I want
Mine just like it except Pacific Green with green interior. Got it 3 years ago, love that truck!! And the 4x4 means I can get over the snow and ice without shoveling.

I want it as my first car too these are so cute and look so nice I want one so bad
i have the sport addition and i am loving it has 207000 mils and still runs strong
The Yaba Masters mine has 213623 miles and also runs strong... Love these trucks they run so good
That's good, have also the blue one with 298,700 miles and still running perfect
More reliable 6 or 8 cylinder?
Really good car ive got 2 using one as spairs but absolutely amazing car they weren't so popular in the uk so they only sold them up 2000 and was a real bargain got my second one for £300 with gas conversion and timing chain changed too and full leather , tv dvd radio screen. im hopefully picking up a 98 explorer eddie bauer these coming weeks!
Wow! Went back to the 98' Ford Explorer. Good Work!
It works pretty well and thank you im glad you liked the video
My parents had this same color and year. Used to always get compliments
I still see this generation on the road today in 2019 and now in 2020
People can’t afford new cars.
Bought one today and drives great for 229k miles ac really cold but I have the sport 2 door
I'm so jealous! I have a 1997 XLT model with over 215,000 original miles, and running great! I just wish mine was that clean! Paint is fading, and the suspension needs replacing, but really awesome!
planning to get the 1999 Ford explorer in the next couple of years as my first car
Me too!!!
Radioactive tool shed my explorer was a hand-me-down car. My parents bought a 1996 explorer limited 5.0 v8 back in 2000. I rode home from the hospital in it when I was born 😁. Radioactive tool shed that’s awesome! Glad we have similar stories! I was born in ‘03 so the truck was around 6-7 years old at the time

My Dad Used To Own One Like That Loved That. Car
Very nice truck, strange to see it with the Ranger cupholder & arm rest though.
Some of your specs are wrong.
It has a 5 speed
It has 210hp and 254lbft
This is specs for 5.0
I just think the Explorer is an overall better package although i do like the styling on the Durango (1st Generation)
idk if im right but, Ford vehicles imo were always larger (in size) compared to its competitors. This gen explorer is much larger than the passport,4runner, and grand cherokee of that era

Automatic 4wd aka awd was the v8, this has user controlled 4wd

in the 90s these cars were imported to Brazil, at the time of the low dollar but they stopped in 98, prices here are very low for an imported car
I love this suv!
My dad bought one just like that one but it had leather seats and he bought it for 2000$ with nothing wrong and it had 104, 000 miles
I actually like my 03 xlt better. It has fog lights, can make a third row seat and has air/heat separate controls for that back ☺
good video... what did you guys use to clean the engine components and make them shine so much?
+AtomicCheeseburger69 The way it's usually done is a steam cleaning then a can of clear coat paint. Dressing on motor not clear coat
Thank you!!
Thats one clean ass EX
Great quality for a 9yrs old video!
Very nice SUV..
Mine has 310 HP. I got the supercharged 4.0 SOHC.
I'm here from final destination 2 ✌️😜
you should push this explorers off road capabilities I have one that is 4x4 and I am not sure how good it is offroad
It's fine offroad, but for a couple things. You'd want more aggressive off-road tires, and often larger ones and a lift kit to get more ground clearance and wheel well clearance.. I need to know about a bolt on the side of motor that water leaking .
In The Competitors Part You Also Forgot To Mention The Mitsubishi Montero Sport.

Koronaa🇮🇶🇮🇶🇮🇶👍🏻😊
Iraq....🗣🗣💔
Frontier, 4.0 L Cologne V6
I paid 2600 for mine with 127k and it was just as clean but I had power seats and leather
I have issue about the engine not start
You need to review older trucks
Might buy a 98 explorer this weekend for $2400 and has 167k on it

Stinky Cheese Thanks for the advice, but I ended up not buying it.

Stinky Cheese Instead of an explorer, I bought a ranger with the same engine with 122k miles, so far no sign of timing chain failure.
Prolly getting my dads
Can I see what those copper pipe besides the Transmission on the 1999 Ford explorer
I love the explorer my mom had the same color and it was 1998 but it was v8 not v6
Quantas unidades foram produzindo?
Tell me about the engine
The trans should be a five speed, not four.
why not?
uhh this is what my dad had and what i'm getting,
So, it's been 4 yrs since your comment. Did you finally get it? 👍
This was a 5 speed actually
There is no way you can make business with the way you record videos, I couldn’t see nothing or any details
I payed 4000 for a 2door explorer sport 4x4 leather sunroof black 127.000 wut u think? ???
That's what I paid for an 96 ford explorer 4x4 xlt v6.
thats not a 98 thats a 99 they changes the front bumpers in 99.
Ya se volco?
Pa eso son llantas mas chicas por la parte trasera para mejor agarre :)
You like Dodge Durango better ?
أين يوجد فيوز الارم
But not 6k with 108k miles
Well I run on no alcohol-fueled just letting fuel will run on
You don't have a ford key
Mercury mountaineer was way better, I had the 302 AWD... I want it back sooo bad
theslayerswishs1 it's the same fucking thing.
Lol
The Mountaineer is similar spec to the XLT / Sport V8 option, all of them started with V8 and then later you had the option to pick a V6 instead. The Explorers always had the option of either V6 or V8 in the Sport / Eddie Bauer / XLT options.
Rocket Bottom
its isuzu not izuzu
