Outstanding, Colin. You have the master's touch.

I had it in the golden age of HI8 and then with the arrival of DV I digitized everything and sold it but I'm very, very nostalgic! What editing together with the EV-s1000 and EV-c 500 with the Sony XV-z1000 AV mixer and the Sony Rm-E 700 video editing controller! It makes me want to cry from nostalgia! Greetings from italy.

This video is probably the best explanation of the EV9000 anywhere, Colin certainly knows his stuff. Unfortunately it doesn't quite cover the symptoms of my own 2 machines, power failure to 1 and tape spooling to the other, but I’ve learned a lot today. Thanks again Colin, looking forward to a video about TBC.

Great job! These "old" tape based units are just gonna fail at any time so any advice is always welcome.. Just got a Sony D8 camcorder up and running, thanks to your repair video, faulty flat cable connection in this case 👍

You just saved me a tonne of money by telling me how to turn off TBC! Thank you so much!!

Your initial tribulations are similar to mine. My repair attempts on complicated gear often ends up making things even worse. So frustrating and time consuming.

I have an EV-S7000. Had the power supply for the screen on the slide out tray go out. A couple friends offered to fix it. This was apparently used exclusively for this model as after a year trying to source parts they wound up designing and building a new power supply from scratch. Worked for ten years but just burned out again.

I purchased the Hi8 Sony EV-S9000E new in 1991 along with a JVC Super VHS HR 4700EK. The JVC broke down and I got a new Super VHS deck but it was so light weight that I got the 4700 repaired and sold the new deck. The Sony EV-1000 has had more problems to fix than the later models but was still fine when I needed it a few months ago to transfer 8mm to USB memory stick. All my Hi8 tapes have PCM sound tracks, including my own camcorder recordings. I used a digital 8 deck to transfer but that has no options to include the PCM track instead of the AFM one.

Hi there, I'm having a EV-S9000E as well as a EV-S1000E which are working rather nice but still might some maintanance here and there. So after you showed some details on the S9000 in this video, I would love to see a video about your S1000

Ouch- I have one of these, thankfully there's no problems with it. I had two of a different model before but both were unrepairable.

I am amazed (and equally appalled) at how complex this beautiful machine is. I bought my EV-S7000 brand new (aprox 1991?), but upon pulling it out of storage, it loaded the 1st tape I put in and then refused to do anything else. Most of my tapes to my recollection do not have PCM dubbing (at least the important family events don't). What would be your recommendation on going forward? Do a quick look inside to see if I am dealing with cracked spools? If its anything beyond that like capacitor issues, I would have to bow out. I suppose I'll have to open it up 1st to see what it looks like. - Thanks again for posting so much great understandable info on this device. I truly loved it when it was working.

Just seen this, and at the start I thought "I have a machine somewhere that's like that, but DVCAM".... It's revealed at the end, I have a DVCAM DSR-30P on the spares rack with the same pop-out keyboard configuration, and a silly extravagant loading flap.

Great video! I have the same problem but with model EV-S900. Would you lead me with the solution for that unit. I have the diagram but not sure where the board with the capacitors is. Thanks in advance

Thanks for the video Colin. I am in need of these spool''s. Is there any luck in me getting my hands on them these days? I know by the comments that two years ago they were not available. My mouth was watering when you pulled them out in there plastic packages. Thanks so much, Gary.

Regarding the "STEREO" wording coming up when there is a recording glitch, I saw this on the "12voltvids" channel:

Hello, the timing belts are not the problem. It is a Table Assy Reel x-3942-954-1. Where can I order this part? I would change the other one at the same time. I haven't found anything on the web. Thank you for the really great videos.

Hello, thanks for the very good video. I'm looking for the timing belts for this recorder. Can you tell me where I can order these?

As a fellow video geek and professor of video, I would submit as the most complex domestic video recorder the Toshiba DX-900, a working unit of which I have.
