This is SO nostalgic for me. I found a beautiful S7000 in great shape online for $250 a couple years ago. I used to teach assemble editing (In/Out destructive editing) to high school kids in the 90s. Great memories. And the S7000 still plays back my archived Hi8 tapes beautifully.

That’s a great deal you got for a working model ! Yes editing in the 90s surely were the good ol days !!

I got the remote only. Lol. It is such a beautiful remote control I had to get it. Now I want to get the ev-s7000 and a good Hi8 camcorder.

The EV-S7000 was the successor to the EV-S3000, came out in 1994 for $2099 (per original Sony Style magazine) and I bought 2 of these back then. Reason was to use the VCR with TBC/playback enhancement as the player and another VCR as recorder rather than camera as player like Sony advertised. Sony also agreed with me it's better to even play off a deck like this and record into camcorder using camcorder's Svideo input (totally backwards) but best case would be deck to deck so you need 2 of these. The 1992 EV-S3000 used Sony's own tape mechanism, same as used in top selling camcorders, but this was cheapened in 1994 to a Memorex tape mechanism on the EV-S7000 / EV-S5000 series. They are notorious for a reel that cracks and I was able to repair these before Sony stopped selling the reel and other parts. This other video (below) explains the issue very well. But as far as any talk today about time code or "editing features" that scan your precious tape to edit points potentially damaging your tape, of course no one today would ever edit to another Hi8 tape. It was the only option in the 1990's and of course we can look back at what this deck can do. But in the current 21st century, all you want is to PLAY your delicate Hi8 tapes into computer or HDD recorder. The EV-S7000 looks cool with tons of outdated features except the ones for playback like DNR, TBC and PCM if your tape has a PCM audio track you like to preserve as well. If you forget the PCM audio, you can use any EV-C100 (a mini Hi8 deck) to digitize your video without PCM and then use modern editing to insert any music track you like. I mention the 1993 EV-C100 because it used Sony's own tape mechanism. If 1993 sounds ancient, the EV-S7000 came out the next year. Here is the other video on what happens to plastic after 20+ years causing the EV-S7000 to eat your tapes while Sony conveniently stopped making this reel: ua-cam.com/video/Qj2did4f_cw/v-deo.html

4:29-4:53 I have that same ES2000 that you just spoke of, only use mine in moderation though. Mine had a bit of a problem too (though that could be on me) last time I used it to tape a soccer game at my alma mater....the EIS glitched because of high camera shake so I turned it off then back on again and the problem went away just like that. I don't know how that auto-zoom problem could have evolved on your ES2000. How long did you end up having it for? And I like the TC feature so now that we've been informed I hope to buy one of these S7000 deck's one day.

Hi ! Interesting about your ES2000. I was so upset because it was a once in a lifetime trip and it started zooming randomly so after that trip I contacted Canon and they were good about it and replaced it -I don’t have the camera any more Interesting about your EIS issue. That issue I didn’t have. Yes the TC feature is really helpful. Thanks for watching

HELLO ALL, i am looking to convert all of my hi 8mm tapes to digital and i wanted to know what player would be best for this? I've had the sony ev c100 in the past but cant seem to locate it. Is this player better then the C100. most of my tape are home movies so i am trying to get the best equipment i can to do this. thanks for any advice.

    • @techtoremember8096

Any Hi8 player would work actually. Just make sure its a hi8 or digital 8 machine as regular 8 decks or camcorders won't properly play hi8 tapes. And a few digital 8 cameras won't play hi8 either so be careful. The model I reviewed here the S7000 is great for transferring footage but if that is all you need to do , a camcorder is a much less expensive option.

that ticking sound you hear is the take up reel or the supply reel has a small crack in it which causes that ticking sound it affects most hi8 and video8 transports so I would advise you take the deck apart and glue or fuse one of the reels back together or it will get worse and cause the transport not to take up the tape and cause it to eat the tape.

I actually got one second hand on eBay as I remembered the color rendition and sharpness of that unit was really great when I had it back in the day . A very underrated hi 8 model. It needed repair when I got it on eBay and I have a guy who works on these things. It’s still working now. I also have the 200 (same model with black and white viewfinder ). They are really nice and small units too. I sold my original 300 in the 90s so it was still working when I sold it . I should have kept it !! Got a review coming out later today on another 8mm model. Let me know your thoughts !
