The order of which football code came first is a little confusing. In terms of when the sport was officially codified, Australian football is first (1857), followed by Association Football (1861) and Rugby Union (1871). Afterwards comes Gaelic (1887), American and Canadian (1892 approx.) and finally Rugby League (1907). In terms of which was played first, that's when things get harder. 'Football' of some kind was played thousands of years before the codes were formalised, but it always looked a little different depending on where you played.

Many Italian Australians have become Aussie Rules footy legend's and have contributed greatly to the sport. Thank you for contribution to such an iconic Australian sport. Viva Italalia!

A few things different from soccer
    - it’s high scoring and mostly there is a clear result at the end of the game. While draws are rare at least they’re high scoring and very exciting
    - this game does not stop for injuries. If you get hurt play will go on unlike in soccer where it will stop. I like this because it means players can’t pretend they’re hurt and stop the clock. Play will only stop if a stretcher is required
-amazing athletes who run up to 10km-15km per game…. Seriously talented

every point is true but the average distance run, the midfielders run considerably further approaching 20 to 22 kilometres and al the while most of it sprinting and taking body contacts that is why they are subbed so regularly

"While draws are rare at least they’re high scoring and very exciting". And then there was the draw between Richmond and Collingwood in 2020, which was about as disappointing a game as you'll ever see.

One of the best players in the AFL at the moment is Marcus Bontempelli, an Australian of Italian origin and Captain of the Western Bulldogs, currently second on the League Ladder. Check out his highlights. One of his teammates is Tom Liberatore, also a champion player and son of a former champion, in Tony Liberatore. Their highlights are worth watching too. There is a long history of Italian champions in this sport.

Sergio Silvagni (Carlton legend) his son Stephen (Carlton legend and AFL Full Back of the Century), Stephen's son Jack is a current Carlton player.
Ron Barassi Melbourne legend and former Carlton coach and player. His father Ron was a Melbourne player and the first Australian soldier killed at the Seige of Tobruk North Africa in WW2.
Just two Italian names of many at Carlton and at other clubs.
Greek names are also prominent in Australian Football.

Well the bounce is every 15 metres. They just said "16 yards" for Americans. Also a mark is ANY catch from a kick which has travelled a minimum of 15 metres. Not just the spectacular catch.

The 16 yards equates to approx 15 steps. The umpires usually count the steps, and if it hits around 15 steps without bouncing, they’ve run too far.

AFL was well-established in Australia by the time that soccer became popular in Britain. In fact, Melbourne Football Club (which plays Aussie Rules) was founded in 1858, Soccer started in Britain in 1863, which makes it older than nearly all English Soccer clubs.

Love your reaction mate...It's a brilliant game when its flying...And I'm proud its unique to Australia...Dates back to the 1850s...Of course a completely different game now and very professional with very strict rules on head high hits and tackles...which it has to be...Otherwise it would be too dangerous...Still acidents happen, just like in any contact sport. I'm a passionate COLLINGWOOD supporter...Probably the biggest Sports Team in Australia...And the most hated...Even though we've lost the most Grand Finals. Like every sports team you barrack for as a kid...its in your blood...Unconditional passion

AFL started in 1858. The average player runs over 20 kilometre’s a game or 12.43 miles. They must have all of the skills to play while running. They are amazing athlete’s. They wear no padding and when they go up to catch a mark, we call it flying.
We have most sports here. My son played AFL, Soccer, Cricket and Rugby Union, my other son played Soccer, Rugby Union and Rugby League. My grandson was a champion Soccer player and his offers from England started before he was 12. Then Italy started watching him. My son told them to go away and let his son grow up first.
I have always had an American Football team and I like it. But their football can be like watching grass grow compared to how fast AFL is.

  • @michaelfink64

Glad you enjoyed the game. It's great to watch people discovering the best game in the world. Loved your reactions. Nope, Aussie rules is older than soccer. Soccer was codified in 1863 and Aussie rules in 1859. So, no, Aussie rules did not copy the rules of other football codes. If anything, it could be the other way around. The Grand Final attendance is actually normally 100,000. AFL season is still going. Played in front of crowds in some cities but in empty stadia in Melbourne, since we have some COVID right now. There is a way of watching it overseas, since there are some American and British UA-camrs live streaming it. Not sure which site they use. The rules and umpires' decisions are a bit hard to interpret sometimes, even for people who have grown up with the game. One of the key issues occurs when a player with the ball is tackled. The player with the ball has to dispose of the ball legally (kick or handball) when tackled. If they don't, it is holding (or dropping) the ball and the tackler gets a free kick. But there are some subtleties around whether the player with the ball had an opportunity to get rid of the ball or not. You will get the hang of it after you have watched a couple of games.

Because of the weird shape of the ball it takes lots of time to learn the basic fundamentals of the game. Like kicking is very difficult and because I don’t play the sport and practise enough I cant kick a ball with accuracy, bouncing the ball has to be done in the perfect way otherwise it will go in every which direction, hand balling is pretty easy but it can take a bit to know what your doing.

You can watch a full replay of any game from the 2021 season on the official AFL website.
If for some reason it doesn't allow people from outside of Australia to watch, that's easy to get around with a proxy.

Soccer is a gentleman's game played by hooligans. Rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen. Aussie Rules is Everyman's game played by supermen.
