The game was invented in 1858 by Tom Wills as a way to keep cricketers fit during the off season. The rules were codified in 1859.
Mythbusting time. Tom Wills was a vital component, but not the only one. Wills was a cricketer, and his letter to a magazine trying to establish the game mentions 'keeping cricketers fit;' but cricket authorities had nothing to do with setting up Australian football. It was invented by people who wanted to play football as a way to play football.

You are spot on mate, players can easily run around 15km in a game. The games are non stop and full of action.

Many of the top mid fielders or on ballers can often reach 30km
The ball is slightly smaller than a rugby ball. It is leather (like rugby used to be - slippery when wet!), yellow for night games and the traditional red for day games. Made from kangaroo hide.
Since the redevelopment of the MCG, it now holds 100,024 and is always sold out for the GF. Tickers are around AUD400, though you can pay 5-fold if you package it with a breakfast or lunch function (great find raiser for the clubs). AFL & MCG Members take half the seating, and about 1/3rd is sold (often via a ballot) to the members (season ticket holders) of the 2 competing clubs involved in the match.
The hardest thing to work out if you've never seen the game, is the score card; the first number(20)is the number of Goals kicked and the second number(10)is the number of Behinds kicked, the third number(130)is the total number of points scored and is determined by the points value of goals(20×6=120)plus behinds(10×1=10)scored. 120 + 10 = 130.
It's really not hard to work out. You just look at the last number and the biggest one wins.

Geek alert. When I was in high school, we had to work out how many points a goal and a behind was, using algebra. 2 unknown values, 2 equations.

AFL grand final 2018 highlights
The Grand Final has over 100,000. spectators. The record before seating was upgraded was over 120,000.
Yeah, I was at the 'G for the 1971 GF and there were more than 118,000 spectators. I was also at Waverley Park in 1991 where Hawthorn/Collingwood attracted a crowd of 93,000 people (and that was a home & away game).
Back when ESPN first started they did not have the budget to show many of the major sports in the US so they aired a lot of Aussie Rules Football. I wish they still did.
the pitch is a cricket oval, that's why there is a direct connection between these two great sports in Australia. Tom Wills who help codify this great game went to Rugby School in England (sent by his father from Victoria around 1848) and was a Rugby and Cricket champion.

"A Cricket Pitch" is the rectangle strip located in a central area of a Cricket Ground, where the batsmen face the bowlers.

@@didakpies here in Oz where we play many sports on large grass spaces, we call them many things including pitches, fields, ovals, grounds. Technically you're correct and pedantic. Ya dick.
What I find great is the fact that unlike soccer games in the UK where fans are separated here the fans are all mixed in together in the crowd...AFL is the oldest, best and most talented footy game ever.

The yellow ball is used at night games to make the ball easier to see under artificial lights.
Explanation of the score numbers: the Collingwood score of 20 10 130 means 20 goals, 10 behinds, and the final tally of those two is 130 points. This is because the goals are worth 6 points each.
The AFL 'footy' game is loosely based on an Australian aboriginal/first nations game called 'marngrook'. Tom Wills observed the aboriginals playing it on his father's station/farm in western Victoria and went on, with others, to design our national game in the mid 1800s. The top players are extreme athletes .The ball is an oval which gives it an erratic bounce when landing which keeps the players on high alert during the game. There is friendly rivalry between the team followers but no hostility as with English football (which we call 'soccer'). I like watching the enjoyable style of your reaction.

The thing to get your head around is there is no off side line, so basketball is a good comparison
The only year that the Grand Final was not played at the MCG, was 2020. It was played at Brisbane Cricket, aka The Gabba. Due to Covid restrictions in Victoria, most AFL teams ended up being based in Queensland that year. Tickets were starting at $1500AU.
AFL Grand Final this year is tomorrow (Aussie time) between my Brisbane Lions and Collingwood Magpies.

The largest crowd at one game was 121,696 for the 1970 VFL Grand Final. In recent years standing room tickets is restricted to 1,000.

One rule they don't describe here is "holding the ball." This rule contributes greatly to the pace and unpredictability of the game. If you're tackled without disposing of the ball (handballing, kicking) and you've had prior opportunity to do so, the other team is awarded a free kick. There are some other clauses to this rule, but this is the heart of it. This is why the ball moves so much.

Also, the ball has to come off the foot to score a goal, otherwise it is a behind.
For a goal to be "kicked" the ball has to be "kicked" below the knee. So if the ball comes off the shin it is a goal. It is the only football game, to score to the maximum, the ball has to "kicked."
The mid fielders who follow the ball a lot cover about 15 km per game. You have to be seriously aerobically fit to keep up , and then there is the physical punishment of the tackling to go with that. This makes the game unique , because they take hits the soccer players don't have to, and they run further and faster than a rugby player has to. Then there is the skills of kicking, marking , tackling, hand ball , and being able to do that on both sides of the body . If you look at the best players you cant tell if they are left or right foot with their kicking. The other thing is there is a position for every body size , with the small nippy players on the ball and the big forwards and rucks and everyone in between. The ladies are also able to play and their league is growing all the time. Its also taking off all over the world with 150 teams in the US alone , some in Canada and all over Europe and the UK, even Asia like Japan.
You're English so consider an oval cricket ground. That's an AFL field. Some are wider, some are longer.
Also if the ball is touched before it crosses the line it's a behind. The bumping rules have changed radically over my lifetime to protect players from very serious injury. If you push someone from behind it's supposed to be a free kick for in the back but you can get reported for taking a dive which is bringing the game into disrepute, something we don't like about soccer. Head high tackles are very much frowned upon but if you duck into it you may get the butt end of the decision or ignored completely. If you're tackled with the ball & you've had prior opportunity to dispose of the ball it's a free kick or if you drop it whilst being tackled. Marking & kicking for goal are our 2 most impressive skills but passing between teammates whether by kicking or handball or just knocking the ball on can be amazing.
These guys have been tested to be generally at Olympic fitness level. Against soccer players & running the 10m timed run turnaround & do it again, etcetera, the best in AFL did a run & a half more than the soccer players did. They are strong & incredibly fit. Versus rugby players, their only win was upper body strength which surprises no-one. Nathan Buckley once ran 23km in one game & in the same game Michael Voss ran 18km. They were the opposing captains.
Height-wise, the average height of the main position players is 6'7 or 2m. This includes full back, centre half back, centre (very quick 6'3 to 6'4 player) centre half forward & full forward. Flanks are at the halfway sides wingers at the centre side & pockets are on the sides of the goal line. So you have 15 set position players 3 on-ballers including a ruck (very tall, 200 to 211cm), 2 quick mid-size players (170 to 190cm), called rover & ruck-rover. Rover is usually one of the cleverest smaller players & the ruck-rover the cleverest mid- tall with pace. The centre player is also called an on-baller & it's literally the fittest brilliant player in the team. The ruck knocks the ball to whoever is free & it runs from there.
If the ball goes over the boundary, if it's deemed to have been unintentional it may be thrown in by the boundary umpires otherwise it's a free kick. Kicked over on the full it is a free kick. This rule may be changing to all out of bounds being paid against last to touch. The small goal posts are treated as boundary.
Umpires make loads of mistakes & miss a lot. Some of them are biased but you'll only realise this after years of watching them. Thus there are 4 central umpires to adjudicate the game. They still get it wrong.

On average players run 12-14km per game, some pass 20. Especially these days.
There are specified positions and players used to mostly keep to them, but these days most of the team just chases the ball, keeping more to their half rather than their quarter.
Just imagine regular football...but for men. That is AFL

the average midfielder will usually run about 12-14kms per games. but then you have your elite midfielders who usually average around 15 and over, these players are the most talented players easily in the competition and the best to watch (imo) . these guys when having a good day can impact the game everywhere on the field better than the positioned players themselves, think of it as pretty much following the ball where ever it is or being one possession away from getting it. Alot of prized midfielders are generally stars in every position and can score large numbers in games sometimes without needing the foward line to apply pressure. The same applies for the backline and defence.
Aussie Rules games may have anything from 20,000 to 100,000 fans in the stadium at a time with the average being around 37,000. With an average of 305,000 fans per round.
It's a big sport. Note that he's comparing Domestic Leagues, not international.
I've watched a number of overseas viewers react to this video over the past year and almost every one of them appears confused when the video displays the final score (20.10.130) - the video doesn't explain all that well but the first number is the number of goals, worth 6 points (so 20 goals = 120 points), and the second figure is the number of behinds (10 i this case) to give a total of 130. Good sides will regularly kick over 100 points, so say 15 goals or more. Today for example my team the Hawks lost by a point 15.5.95 to 14.12.96 against Richmond.
This is NOT a version of rugby. It is actually closer to Gaelic Football.
AFL players run over 20kgs every game...tickets prices for a normal match are about $27 AUD, and around $200.00 AUD for the grand final.

If you projected to the centre of the earth the weight of the land run over during the course of a match it would amount to many millions of kilograms not the measly 25 kilograms you say.

The ball similar to rugby but are different slightly rounder and shorter rugby ball narrower and pointer similar to grid iron ball

Footy is blunter for marking and rounder for larger kicking area
Rugby pointy and narrow to cut through air when thrown as they don't mark ball often
The curve on the ball is how you drop the ball angle and which part of the foot as well out or inner side of your foot
Check side is kicking ball by holding at angle kicking near middle of ball the spin curve will depend on angle you hold it where you kick it how hard you kick it
The good players can use either side of their bodies and if they can't you will see player try to keep them from using the side they need to move ball on so then player has to try and side step them to get on their kicking handball side
It's all about knowing you opponents and coaches tell players their opponents weakness before and during game

AFL in Victoria which is mostly based due to Melbourne teams is more of a religion to Victorians. AFL is only based in Australia. Tasmania is about to have a team and the only state and territory not to have a team is Northern Territory and Canberra. South Australia and New South Wales have two teams.

International Rules is played between Australia and Ireland. As an Aussie I think it looks like Gaelic football rules. I guess an Irishman would see international rules and say it looks like Aussie Rules.
