    0:27 the statue shows tom wills, the founder of the game. his story is a fascinating one. he survived a massacre in which his family was killed by aboriginals. despite this event, he coached and captained the first aboriginal cricket team, which became the first australian team to tour overseas in 1868. sadly tom suffered from ptsd and eventually drank himself into oblivion, and committed suicide by stabbing a pair of scissors through his heart

    I played this as a little child to grown man. I have played a lot of sport. No other sport expects you to run non-stop, be tackled by anyone coming from 360 degrees, be able to kick a ball 60metres with accuracy, handball to a teammate, and be able to mark(catch) in the air on somebody’s back....all without pads & helmets.
    One day in the future, the world will catch on to this great game. Invented by Aistralians 👍

    I can remember a time when the coaches would 'adjust' the official stats
    When the team won they would increase the number of kicks (52 became 61),
    while decreasing the number of handballs (60 became 50) & conversely
    When the team lost they would decrease the number of kicks (58 became 48),
    while increasing the number of handballs (54 became 66)...
    This was to keep their opponents from realising that the team was winning by having a close to 1:1 kick to handball ratio

    • @whosyourdaddy842
      @whosyourdaddy842 5 років тому +1

      They're basically looking at who's hot at the time,player form, and how the forwards or backlines are working together, so than can predict/guess who they need to match up, and how they can break through the defense or offense. Our game changes so quickly, any benefit is worth having. But its still all guesswork, as the stats change as frequently as the game.

    Really interesting but I think too much focus on stats could take/is taking our game in a bad direction. It all becomes too sterile, everyone is focused on getting X number of contested possessions, X number of smothers etc. We'll lose the importance of the player who might only have 10 possesions but creates a game changing moment. I dunno, I just think over analysing anything eventually destroys the best thing about it.

    • @SP-free
      @SP-free 5 років тому +6

      Wrong.
      You have this all ass about.
      All AFL Teams are about winning.
      The very reason they exists are to win Premierships.
      A by-product of a winning Team is a heavily laden area OF STATS that enable you to win.
      You cannot win without SOME AREA of Stats going your way....even if it’s as simple as ‘Kicking Accuracy at Goal’.
      All Stats are a by product of the game existing.
      No Stats - No game.
      No winning players on the day - few Stats.
      No Kicking Accuracy to teammates - they don’t get the ball.
      No players getting the ball in traffic against opponents - no contested possessions.
      No Kicking Accuracy at Goal - No win.

    I never knew that people viewed AFL as data rich analytical game... I guess since I am a player I don't really think about stuff like that... I just hope that one day women's AFL will become as big as the male competition so I can continue to chase my dream of becoming a professional female player

    • @brodiestephens419
      @brodiestephens419 8 років тому +9

      I'm a male former footy player and I'm REALLY REALLY excited about the Women's League. The exhibition matches have been great. It's much more free-flowing than the men's game, as there seem to be far fewer stoppages. I think it's really going to take off and I hope the competition gets the sponsorship and TV rights deals it deserves so the players are paid enough to not only reward current players but to make professional footy a viable career option for young female players. Can't wait for the first season!

    • @dangerous_tackle9039
      @dangerous_tackle9039 8 років тому +8

      I find that the games are much faster in the male leagues, so it's generally better to watch, but you are right about there being less stoppages. But still, I don't think it'll get as big as the male comp. Hopefully though, it'll get big enough I can support myself financially just through AFL.

    • @DaveWhoa
      @DaveWhoa 8 років тому +7

      +crazycakemanflies i like soccer as a good game for kids because they don't get hurt (though having said that kids AFL is pretty much non-contact). I WANT to be able to respect soccer, but I just cannot bring myself to respect a game where the players treat the rules as a joke (perhaps then they are) by acting like they're in pain over nothing, it's just ridiculous, and it's the only sport where we see this at endemic proportions. Yes I know "a slide tackle to the ankles from a big defender fucking hurts" (we've all experienced it even when just playing at school), but really - THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE SAYING and then compare it to the hits and knocks that other sports get, and how those men and women behave afterwards. Conclusion: soccer players are a bunch of blouses who need to harden the fuck up if they want non-fanbois to take them seriously. Until then you're all just a bunch of pussies _by your own actions_, sorry.

      They don't themselves use the stats, they only record the stats.
      They say though out the video that the stats they record are used by multiple sources. Including the teams/coaches for their game analysis, the fantasy football leagues use it for the scoring. The media outlets use it for both Tv and Radio. Fans also have real time availability to the recorded stats for their own personal interest/analysis.

      You're entitled to your own opinion but I have to disagree. I've even heard americans describe AFL players as the best all-round athletes Additionally you'd be amazed how tactically complex aussie rules is. While there seems to be random chaotic motion, a lot of it is controlled by coaches who tells players, where to, position how quickly to go there e.t.c. similar to ice hockey and gridiron. The random elements of the game like how the ball bounces, whose stays on their feet when a bunch of players collide e.t.c. add to the theatre of the sport, even newcomers who don't know much about the sport find it very exciting. The reason it looks scrappy and unprofessional is because the skills are so hard to execute and at a professional level where the pressure from the opposition is intense and the game moves very quickly it becomes even harder.

    Footballers today would not cope with the game from the 70s and 80s, all the special diets and skills training are just another way of trying to emphasise the obvious, if you can’t kick a ball longer than 20 metres you shouldn’t be playing, footballers have their own unique skills and don’t need some know all telling them how to kick or place their bodies in best position to enable them to gain access to the ball, if a team can’t play attacking football, how can they win a game, watching the game today is like watching paint dry. Special diets for optimum performance is a smokescreen, another way of conning an athlete that what they were previously eating is no good for you, bullshit.
