But the key thing here is, while supporters might say they "hate" rival teams, you will NEVER see the kind of violence between fans that you do at a soccer game, or even NFL, hockey, etc. Fans of opposing teams aren't separated, like you often see in other sports: they sit side by side in the stands, and head to the pub afterward together looking forward to change the subject or rub it in. Australians love their sport, but they understand it's just a game.
Blindly Fumblin very very rarely at least but yeah thats a very good thing that is. tbf i understand a bit more when its international games of say soccer/football cos some countries have a pretty tough history between each other at least in the sport. e.g. Greece vs Turkey, Brazil vs Argentina, basically anything involving Russia and also often England or Italy.
Blindly Fumblin that’s right. At the end of a game, there’s no violence or fights or anything, everyone leaves and moves on. It’s a pretty special thing I reckon to be able to just move on without there being any violence/fighting. Soccer is horrible in terms of that aha at least it used to be.
Agreed Blindy, we have nowhere near the hate of European Football teams in particular. That said, i'm OK with this. Our hate has not got the the class & religion themed rivalry like you blokes. We've got mainly got geographical rivalries but in the event of television, those lines have been blurred. Nothing sinister but iv'e seen some real genuine loathing, hatred, tears but non-violent, emotion between these two.
It's the times that have changed......if you look at Port Melbourne vs Williamstown rivalry, people were killed over that.....My dad nearly got his head kicked in after walking in to a pub in Port Melbourne, wearing a Willy guernsey. That day we had won so their supporters were not happy.....lucky some customers of the pub thought he had some balls and helped him out of respect.....otherwise he might not've walked out of that pub......but he had been involved in other fights in his time anyway haha.
Yeah if you think that it's 100% Australian then you need to go to Australia. Sounds really horribly forced. You don't suddenly start to switch accents after being in a country for 2 years - especially when speaking to someone who is from your home country. Whenever people I know that grew up in America until 10, then in the UK for another 10 years, they use an American accent with Americans, and a British accent with Brits.
I'm not from Australia, a fact I will never forgive my parents for, but I was an exchange student there in the early eighties. And I absolutely fell for AFL. Still watch every week without fail. I played rugby, American football, Association football and other sports, but I wish I'd gotten more time to play Aussie rules. Most fun I've ever had in a open field that didn't involve at least one woman.
A perfect example of the true Aussie spirit my friend... We gratefully accept you and your like to join us and to promote, if not participate in, the most spectacular ball-game on Earth :) Big +
Just a heads up to every non-Australian watching this. Collingwood are famous for having the most feral supporters in the league, so don't judge all AFL supporters based on collingwood supporters 😂
Aussie pie is right the Richmond fans are way worse. Already this year 2 fights and one of the fucking dogs spat in a old Ladys face. Every week something happens at the Richmond game.
Yeah I would have to agree. I think port and crows take the cake though.... the violence between both regions if caught wearing a jersey in the wrong place.....wouldn't want to be ya!
There are 2 types of rivalries, 1st being derbies such as crows vs port and 2nd being rivalries based of history such as carlton vs collingwood and hawthorn vs geelong
That's average attendance figures - amazing yes. But not the 4th most attended sport in the world. Japanese and American Baseball, Football, American Football and Basketball all had higher attendance total figures than AFL. Don't get started on Tour De France.
they hit harder because : 1. all the padding 2. they don't wear themselves out : EVERY tackle is followed by a stoppage in play of at least a minute or two! WTF?!
As a primer for any non-Australian watcher of this video: the term "Football" can be used to describe any game which consists of some aspect of using a ball (possibly with your foot) to gain territory into the opponent's "end zone" to score some sort of points. Football or "footy" can refer to a variety of codes depending of what part of the world you're from. The derivation comes from the fact that all variants are some sort of offshoot of original Association Football (Soccer). In Ireland, for example, Footy can refer to Gaelic Rules Football or Rugby Union or even Soccer In the remainder of the UK, football is predominantly used to describe what we Americans call Soccer In New Zealand, footy refers strictly to rugby as it is THE national sport there In America, Football obviously refers to the Gridiron Football rules we play here In Australia, 3 different variant codes of "football" exist: Rugby League, Aussie Rules Football and Rugby Union ***Rugby League and Rugby Union are two different sports, but that's a whole another discussion*** Of course, we can debate for hours between the minute details and differences between the variant codes of football, but that's a brief guideline to the word "Footy" or "football"

As a Queenslander who prefers aussie rules to rugby league, I sadly have to agree. Fully grown men in Queensland still call AFL the GayFL because they haven't matured past the age of 12

I love the footy. What's great it that due to the massive time difference between Australia and Las Vegas...games can come on here at any time between 10pm - 2am. Nothing beats getting a great beer / weed buzz at night, then watching footy. :)
Joseph Stalin Same as i find the AFL fascinating and love coming across these type of videos. There is an incredible skill set along with some of the finest athletes in the world involved in the AFL its great to see a channel as big as vice showcasing it to the world.
Help it grow mah man! I dont even follow it but i acknowledge its probably the hardest sport that exists. Theres more athleticism involved than literally any other. As a former rugby and soccer player, i was always jealous of our schools First XVIII players levels of ability.

Hawthorn v Geelong built on substance. As a Hawk supporter I do love to hate the Cats but I still respect them Essendon on the other hands they can fuck the fuck off!!! Essendon > Geelong > Sydney > the rest.
Essendon vs Collingwood is the biggest rivalry and we meet on ANZAC day (remembering Australian soldiers) and it’s the second biggest game of the season just before the grand final
Im from the uk Ive recently got into Aussie rules football and have started supporting a team the gold coast suns now I know they had a terrible time last season but I have a good feeling about this session
It's lonely being an AFL fan in the UK! But so glad I started following this amazing sport in the last few years. I'm a Brisbane Lions fan in Birmingham. Been a football fan (soccer) all my life, but recently discovered that AFL is way more entertaining!
A good show of how popular the sport is in Australia is Americans are probably thinking Collingwood is one our states but its just a suburb thats 0.5 square miles large
5:03 this is a little misleading-play does stop if a player is seriously hurt. In general this mostly happens if a player is knocked unconscious or experiences concussion-like symptoms after a heavy collision. However, for pretty much anything else, play continues on around the player, and when the ball moves away the team's runners will come on and check them out if necessary.

Reminds me of Gaelic football that we have here in Ireland We have 32 counties all playing against eachother so we have a lot of Rivalries Galway-Mayo would probably be the most consistent rivalry but Dublin Mayo is big in recent years
There are several former Gaelic footballers playing in the AFL. One of them won the AFL premiership (Aussie rules equivalent of the all Ireland senior football championship) just days ago. His name, Conor McKenna, he is just the second player to win both the All Ireland SFC as well as the AFL premiership. The first one was Tadhg Kennelly (won the AISFC with Tyrone in 2021). Furthermore, Gaelic footballers (and Irish AFL players) and (Australian) AFL players play each other in a hybrid sport called international rules football.
The big 6 Victorian teams rivalries of the AFL: Richmond v Carlton, Carlton v Collingwood, Essendon v Collingwood, Essendon v Carlton, Richmond v Collingwood, Richmond v Essendon, Geelong v Hawthorn, Hawthorn v Carlton, Hawthorn v Essendon, Geelong v Collingwood. The interstate rivalries: Adelaide v Port Adelaide, Greater Western Sydney (GWS) v Sydney, Brisbane v Gold Coast, West Coast v Fremantle, West Coast v Port Adelaide, West Coast v Sydney, Adelaide v Sydney, Brisbane v Sydney, Gold Coast v GWS, Port Adelaide v Fremantle. Other Victorian club rivalries: North Melbourne v Hawthorn, North Melbourne v Essendon, Melbourne v Richmond, Melbourne v Hawthorn, Collingwood v St Kilda, St Kilda v Geelong. Victorian clubs v interstate clubs: Adelaide v Richmond, Port Adelaide v Collingwood, Sydney v Hawthorn, Sydney v Collingwood, West Coast v Collingwood, Brisbane v Collingwood, Brisbane v Essendon, West Coast v Hawthorn, Adelaide v Hawthorn, Brisbane v Western Bulldogs, Geelong v Adelaide, Sydney v Adelaide.
I think the biggest testament to the idea of needing to be a little crazy to be an AFL player is that you have to run off the field if you get an injury, even if it's a torn hamstring or something similar. You only get taken off on a stretcher if you're basically unconscious or there's bone sticking out your leg
The Clot Thickens no doubt it’s a massive rivalry but Collingwood Richmond takes the cake for the biggest modern day rivalry, would love to see a Friday night showdown though 🤤🤤
As an American I come back to this video often, for no other reason than to hear Mason Cox's Texas accent turn into an Australian accent. It is honestly uncanny. Very strange to hear, because it clearly is real.
First saw the AFL here in the US decades ago when I got a big satellite dish and a VCR. I love the sport and rue the time difference because it limits its visibility here. If memory serves someone tried to get a Footy league going here in the US long ago (90's maybe?) but it didn't catch on. Beats the hell out of the NFL, which has slowed to a crawl in recent years. Every sprained ankle stops the game for 5 minutes, whereas Footy just carries on ala hockey. Massive respect for these players and the wide range of athletic skills it takes to play the game.
yes indeed.. according to the AFL's very own stats.. the AVERAGE player does between 13 and 14kms per game... only the mid-fielders may do marginally more than that.
The nastiest rivalry in the AFL is Adelaide v Port Adelaide. Up until a few years ago after every match they played against each other they would meet outside a pub ans beat the shit out of each other.
you also has the option of taking your kick or handball unapeeded or quickly play on which allows the opposition to come after you. Best game on earth however hardest game to pick up having not grown up with it. Once you learn the rules everything makes sense.
Since 1960 Carlton 8 premierships Collingwood 2... Three of Carlton's 8 were against Collingwood... From 1960 Collingwood has little history and and what history they do have is tragic... Players I think loose perspective , the weight of the illusion , a distorted sense of self ,the excessive fan worship... A perfect storm for failure. It's coming to 32 years with just 1premiership... That's two in 64 years... Carlton's 8 still looks good !
Got this totally wrong! The 2 greatest rivals in Aussie Rules Football are Essendon ( Bombers and Carlton (Navy Blues) They are both on 16 premierships each!!! U ask any Bomber supporter or any Navy Blue, supporter that know their history and both hate each other! Collingwood (Magpies) forgive me but don't even. Rate!!
@@eiypo What it lacks in length it makes up for in spitefulness. I'm a Tigers supporter but live in Adelaide, and the vibe leading up to and out from Showdowns is the best fun.
Greatest rivalry in AFL
Collingwood supporters and the dentist XD
Yeah that’s a huge rivalry
Comedy Bird bruh your legit on every afl video
The dentist lose about 90% in this rivalry
Hugh Duncan lmao one of the dentists i had is a collingwood supporter 😂
Underrated comment 😂
I think the biggest rivalry in footy is everyone vs the umpires.
MegaPrincessPenguin true tho 😂
That’s every sport tho
100%
Umpires are a scourge on society
Yes (from a self aware salty Brisbane supporter)

As an American hearing Mason Cox's shifting accent is very strange. In one sentence he goes from sounding 100% Texan to 100% Australian
Yeah I noticed he is losing his American accent.
@Allagí Very similar to Ben Simmons as he is Australian and his accent changes quite often
As a Dallasite myself, I can hear the Oklahoma influence too haha
NOt 100% Aussie, but mixed accent

collingwood vs carlton is the biggest in the afl tho closly followed by port adelaide vs adelaide crows

this game makes the NFL look dull in comparison
So does darts
Look up 1950s-1970s NFL. I've played rugby and football. Trust me I killed it in rugby when you have pads you hit way harder
they hit harder because :
1. all the padding
2. they don't wear themselves out : EVERY tackle is followed by a stoppage in play of at least a minute or two! WTF?!
I'm from Australia and I like both sports. They're different. The stoppages in NFL are so they can orchestrate a suitable play. It's like chess.
NFL is fucking confusing AFL footy is bloody straight forward
Who’s here after the pies lost the grand final after being up by 5 goals in the first quarter.
Also the cameras were all on Joffa
I am a Carlton supporter ,, but ya still have to take ya hat of to Joffa's passion.
This sport reminds me of American Football, Rugby, and Soccer all in one. And the score is as high as a basketball game. That’s crazy.
its more like basketball than any of those others sports when u play it
The game goes for approximately 2 hrs of playing time. 6 points for a goal. Hence the high scores
With a nice touch of Game Of Thrones mixed in. :)

It still suck regardless...maybe that's why its not popular elsewhere.
Pietro Jenkins or maybe the toughness and the difficulty to organise an aussie rules football game puts people off.
Barely anywhere in the world has grounds big enough to support a game.
Pietro Jenkins many Australians believe that soccer sucks, that’s why it isn’t that popular here
Australian Rules Football is the only football where a goal is scored solely from the foot.
Even though I'm an Aussie of Italian descent, I enjoy many sports worldwide but i sincerely believe that Aussie rules is the best spectator sport in the world.

Love how his Murican accent makes souding Oz-E like Uss-ee
Reminds me of Gaelic football that we have here in Ireland
We have 32 counties all playing against eachother so we have a lot of Rivalries
Galway-Mayo would probably be the most consistent rivalry but Dublin Mayo is big in recent years
go tyrone
Definitely Gaelic football derivative
its so similar that we did Australia v Ireland with AFL players representing Australia playing Gaelic football players
Do Gaelic football players make good money?
There are several former Gaelic footballers playing in the AFL. One of them won the AFL premiership (Aussie rules equivalent of the all Ireland senior football championship) just days ago. His name, Conor McKenna, he is just the second player to win both the All Ireland SFC as well as the AFL premiership. The first one was Tadhg Kennelly (won the AISFC with Tyrone in 2021).
Furthermore, Gaelic footballers (and Irish AFL players) and (Australian) AFL players play each other in a hybrid sport called international rules football.

Hope they called for an ambulance for poor Joffa after this year's grand final
I think the biggest testament to the idea of needing to be a little crazy to be an AFL player is that you have to run off the field if you get an injury, even if it's a torn hamstring or something similar. You only get taken off on a stretcher if you're basically unconscious or there's bone sticking out your leg
I want go and gets more experience in Australia football
Are you American? check out the USAFL
Easily the best international footy doco I've ever seen.
The Adelaide Crows and port power have the most heated rivalry in the AFL.
The others don't matter.
The Clot Thickens no doubt it’s a massive rivalry but Collingwood Richmond takes the cake for the biggest modern day rivalry, would love to see a Friday night showdown though 🤤🤤
I Agree, but I don't see Collingwood and Carlton as a rivalry. I always thought it was Carlton and Essendon
ScratchMapping look back on the matches we played during the 1900’s, grand finals especially
5:09 dude says you have to be a little nuts right as the guy tackles the dude and knees him in the nuts well played Vice
I Live in Collingwood....Collingwood, Canada.
Well then, we expect you to follow the Magpies.
As an American I come back to this video often, for no other reason than to hear Mason Cox's Texas accent turn into an Australian accent. It is honestly uncanny. Very strange to hear, because it clearly is real.
GO RICHMOND 🖤💛🖤💛🖤💛🖤💛🖤🐯🐯🐯🐯
First saw the AFL here in the US decades ago when I got a big satellite dish and a VCR. I love the sport and rue the time difference because it limits its visibility here. If memory serves someone tried to get a Footy league going here in the US long ago (90's maybe?) but it didn't catch on. Beats the hell out of the NFL, which has slowed to a crawl in recent years. Every sprained ankle stops the game for 5 minutes, whereas Footy just carries on ala hockey. Massive respect for these players and the wide range of athletic skills it takes to play the game.
1:11 "If Australia was a counrry founded for criminals..."
There were people before the criminals. They are called aboriginals.
Keyword: Australia. When the nation of Australia was founded.
Its ok the abos are the criminals now.....funny how things turn around.
hehe
i feel so enlightened now thanks .
He didn’t say there wasn’t fuck wit... he said founded...
The most they run is around 15km (9-10) miles.
yes indeed.. according to the AFL's very own stats.. the AVERAGE player does between 13 and 14kms per game... only the mid-fielders may do marginally more than that.
The nastiest rivalry in the AFL is Adelaide v Port Adelaide. Up until a few years ago after every match they played against each other they would meet outside a pub ans beat the shit out of each other.
God I Love this game so much! Bring on the season.
Good old Collingwood forever come on pies
I LOVE THIS SPORT SO MUCH
My question is: what is considered a catch in Aussie-rule football?
A mark?
The ball caught (and controlled) on the full (can not touch the ground or another player) from a kick of more then 15 metres.
you also has the option of taking your kick or handball unapeeded or quickly play on which allows the opposition to come after you. Best game on earth however hardest game to pick up having not grown up with it. Once you learn the rules everything makes sense.
Collingwood and Carlton are the most popular AFL clubs in Australia and probably the world
Agreeable but I reckon Richmond is a runner up for most popular
Since 1960 Carlton 8 premierships Collingwood 2... Three of Carlton's 8 were against Collingwood... From 1960 Collingwood has little history and and what history they do have is tragic... Players I think loose perspective , the weight of the illusion , a distorted sense of self ,the excessive fan worship... A perfect storm for failure. It's coming to 32 years with just 1premiership... That's two in 64 years... Carlton's 8 still looks good !
The bestest club in the country, the mighty Richmond Tigers!
Rate!!
The real rivalry is adelaides two teams, port or crows
Or freo and eagles and Brisbane and Gold Coast
Manufactured by the AFL. Carl v Coll goes back 250 plus games, 6 Grand finals. No contest.
@@eiypo What it lacks in length it makes up for in spitefulness. I'm a Tigers supporter but live in Adelaide, and the vibe leading up to and out from Showdowns is the best fun.
What about eagles v dockers? Now that is true rivalry.
@@stopstalkingme8058 Not last weekend it wasn't :P Although to be fair the showdown was a fizzer after half time as well
I mean, I don't know about Collingwood v Carlton. But Port and Adelaide for sure are rivals.
The greatest AFL rivalry is by far Hawthorn vs Geelong.
Yeah Nah. It's a good rivalry but not Carlton Collingwood. 125 years of hatred.
1:04 Collingwood don’t win grand finals tho, there’s even a song about it. 🎵 They’ve lost more grand finals than any other team 🎵
Should look at GAA
Love it, well done! Where is Carlton now on the ladder ?? Couldn't look that far down.
to think vice sports tracked down JOFFA ahhaha well you can hear him, before you see him.
