Current Tacoma Owners, what's your opinion on the upcoming revision to the Tacoma? Specifically, based on the limited information currently available, what's your opinion on the truck coming equipped in some trims with a 4 cylinder turbo combined with an electric motor hybrid? Exact specifications for horsepower, torque, transmission gearing and fuel efficiency aren't available yet but in general I think we can assume all will be areas of improvement. On the other hand, it will be all new and as a result, none of it will be proven to be reliable over time like the current V6 and current transmission. Additionally, I anticipate the turbo and electric motor will make the truck more difficult or impossible for DIY mechanics to touch, but maybe that's a wrong assumption. Ultimately, I feel Toyota knows they have a loyal customer base that values reliability of the Tacoma, and therefore must make reliability a very high priority for the new powertrain setup. Based on this, or maybe you have different or even opposing assumptions, what are your thoughts on the anticipated update to the powertrain in the next generation Tacoma? By the way, great video and much appreciated.

A tip for the transmission, there is a button called ECT PWR, and it makes the truck feel more alive, the throttle responds quicker, and overall wakes the truck up more. I would definitely recommend this truck to someone that is considering it, it feels solid and is a great truck.

Eh, it actually holds the rpms and gears higher than needed which is annoying. It’s like you’re driving in 4lo. Terrible on fuel mileage. They’re going to need to revamp the transmission/torque converter in this truck for the next gen. It sucks.

First time i've seen one of your videos...VERY NICE. You are to the point - from a real world perspective. I own one of these 3rd Gen Tacomas. I bought my 2019 TRD Off Road 4x4, double cab in Jan of 2019. I drive a lot and I own a horse farm. I have 89K trouble free miles on my truck - probably 15-20% in 4WD. The truck is a great size, it goes all around our property (small trails) with ease and it is comfortable in big city traffic and small rural settings. Our family (my son's truck now) also has a 2002 TRD Off Road 4x4...with 240K trouble free miles (normal maintenance - timing belt, water pump, plugs, wires, etc). Toyota trucks certainly have never been cutting edge with tech, but they have a reputation for practicality/utility and dependability and our family knows first hand it is a deserved reputation.

I love my Army Green Sport. I’ve had more compliments on the color in two months than my previous 35 driving years combined. I came from an Audi A4, so the engine and transmission are, “rustic” in comparison. Good point on the DRLs! Another factor I think tricks people into thinking their full headlights lights are on is how many gauge clusters are backlit whenever the vehicle is on these days. In older cars it's always a good reminder to turn your lights on if you can't see anything inside haha.

You mentioned that you don't know why someone would get a 2 wheel drive version of the Tacoma, let me answer that. I live in Florida, very flat, no snow, no need for 4 wheel drive. Also, 4 wheel drive adds another maintenance item, the transfer case. Something drivers of 2 wheel trucks don't have to worry about. Simplicity is a good thing.

The Tacos available had 40-75K miles and were selling for almost new and in a few cases more than brand new base models. I'm pretty cheap and almost never off road so I wouldn't considered the TRDs. Ended up buying the base SR model and customizing it a little bit as I go along.
One thing, the 6500lb tow rating is an over reach to me. I have used my truck to tow and in ect mode and shifter set at S4 I'm not comfortable towing over 5K, but to each their own.

If u dont know about the Tacoma trucks. It lags on the throttle response. U should think about the OV tuning. This program is meant for Tacoma trucks. It re- formats your computer system in your truck and your transmission so it doesnt always hunt for the gears.Or the Sprint booster v3 that plugs above your gas pedal. So it takes away the lagging on the throttle response. Its alot more responsive when u press the gas pedal. Also install a light bar in your front grill will help improve your visibility at night time were there are no light post around on the road. I have 2017 Tacoma sport TRD sport manual. Had it for 4 years now and i already put 247000 km on my truck. 153478 miles on my trcuk. Still runs like almost new. Less maintenance on the truck. Just the normal fluid chances done on the truck. Make sure u change out your gear oils. Been changing mine every 60000km or around 37000 miles from the day i bought my Tacoma truck. Tacoma trucks are fun driving long distance congrats and enjoy your new toy.

Frontier= Fully boxed modified Titan frame (ability to Titan swap suspension/engine), Dana 44 locking rear (Pro-4X), Dana front diff, Spicer transfer case, V6 motor which is made in Tennessee, Rear disc brakes, Low crawl ratio 54:1 with new 9-speed, Made in USA. (I own a 2015 Xterra Pro-4X, which is the same as a Frontier, and the only two issues I've had at 75,000 miles is the A/C condenser went out, and a rear axle seal was replaced, both under warranty).
Tacoma= C-channel frame, rear drum brakes, now made in Mexico, and higher prices.

As someone who came from a 19 sr5 to a 21 off road Toyota has made major improvements in the shift points. The seat softness alongside the electric adjustable seat makes the cockpit feel comparable to my old Lexus gs350. As a tall guy in the 19 sr5 I always felt that I was sitting way up on top of the truck like I was sitting in a horse buggy and never brought much joy to drive.

Personally imo the best steering wheel I’ve ever felt in a body on Frame car was in a Land Rover LR4. I don’t know what it is but the communication I got through the steering wheel was much better then any modern day BMW. I could tell exactly what the front wheels are doing and feel every little crack through the wheel it was great.

He danced around it, but we actually buy Tacoma’s for what he views as “dated”. We want simple, well built components, not additional points of failure. The Tacoma right now is the best sized, most reliable, well built truck on the market for the price. These guys buying fords and chevys want to buy Ford and Chevy, we want value.

I just bought a 2021 tacoma TRD after trading in my 4runner with 200K plus miles which there was nothing wrong with, i just needed a truck bed, Its a great truck, nothing fancy but enough tech to make it modern and I know it's going to go for another 200k atleast and will get me pretty much anywhere I want to go in any conditions

One complaint I do have about the truck an this might just be nit picky, the Cruise Control on the display should show the speed up top while the one screen showing the CC is active an taking up the entire area, the mph and gal left show.

@10:41 totally agree about the DRL's. I see no point other than prolonging bulb life in leaving the tail lamps off. I do like that the DRL is selectable unlike in older Toyotas where you're like sitting in the parking lot at night and shining your headlamps at the car parked in front of you, or vice versa.

Any Tacoma owners having issues with the plastic coolant lines cracking from heat over time?
There’s a Y pipe behind the engine that may crack and has caused issues due to access/location.
I’ve been wanting to buy this truck since 2017 but am concerned with the plastic coolant lines. Any help would be appreciated…

That engine sucks balls. It has some serious problems, starting with the plastic parts that channel coolant that breakdown and cause a serious leak, which can't be fixed without removing the engine, or completely disconnecting the body and pulling off the frame. Even still, it will cost about $5,000 t fix it, and take at least 2 days. Toyota has extended the warranty for it, thus Toyota identified it as a problem, but they only fix the ones that people complain about.
That transmission works, but has some gearing problems and the computer is constantly gear hunting and banging in/out of gear. Then you have the Tacoma rumble/vibration that pretty much is a given on every one.
Q=Quite frankly, that V6 sucks. The 4.0 should have been updated and put into the Tacoma. Now, only the 4runner has the 4.0, and probably not for long. They use Atkinson cycle instead of auto cycle engines, so 300HP is more like 250HP because the Atkinson engine does not function well for performance application.

I have a '20, same exact color and everything. The beauty is that it's still pretty basic for the most part with still having good old physical controls for climate control and stuff. My only beef is that it get's the gas mileage of an 8 cylinder.

I just bought a 2021 tacoma 4 cylinder and I love it , yeah its not fast , but it's fast enough to get me around town and keep up with traffic, drove a 6 speed manual 2012 5.0 for years , yeah it was fast as hell but it was hard on my back and hard to get in and out of after a long day at work , and definitely hard to resist the urge to speed ,and a pain in the ass always having young fellas pulling up wanting to race you,

Regarding the DRL's. I guess you didn't notice that when you have your headlights on there is an icon on your dash (it looks like a light bulb). That's how you know your headlights are on. Since you were driving during the day, there was no reason to turn on the headlights. I have a 2016 TRD Sport 2-wheel drive. I love it. It's gone on four "road trips" with no problems. Have 83K + miles on it. Hoping for many more.
