This is what our master bed/bath was painted with in our rental (built in the 60s) before we moved in. Parts of it feel nice, and other parts are shiny and peel off easily. The bathroom walls and window trim are leaching surfactant (my husband likes to take long showers without the fan on) and I was wondering if it had anything to do with the quality of paint - I have never seen this happen before.
This Valspar Reserve is not the original Valspar Reserve and not the original Valspar Reserve Formula. The original Valspar Reserve came out before Sherwin Williams bought out Valspar. When Lowe's first started putting the Sherwin Williams HGTV products on the shelves they had the interior Ovation, Showcase and Infinity. They also had the exterior Infinity and Weathersheild. Both the HGTV premium interior and exterior Infinity had some major issues. The interior version was way to thick and didn't spread very well, also dried quickly and left bad brush marks. The bonding agent was too strong. When it was time to clean your brush after painting it didn't want to come off of the brush. It dried like cement. I took my brush after trying to get it clean with soap, water and a wire brush and couldn't. I took a wire wheel and hit it hard just to see if I could get the rest of and it wouldn't come off. Brand new $17 brush in the trash. Same with the exterior version. Soon after Sherwin Williams bought out Valspar the Valspar Reserve interior and exterior disappeared off of the shelf's for over a year. I was really upset because that was my go to for interior and exterior paint. It really was a great premium paint & primer from Valspar. After that I started using a different brand for a year until I went back to Lowe's to see if Valspar Reserve had come back. It had not "yet". I said to myself to go ahead and give the Infinity a try again just to see if they had worked on the formula after a year since I had tried it before. I had a bedroom to paint so I got a couple gallons and gave it a try. After shaking the can up real good I set the can down and opened the lid. I always smell the paint first. I have a thing about smelling everything. It smelled really really familiar. I then dipped my brush in and spread some on the wall to cut in. I was like wait a minute. That spread exactly like another paint I was familiar with in the past. I soon realized that this paint wasn't the original Sherwin Williams HGTV Infinity at all. This paint was the Original Valspar Reserve rebranded. They took the Original Valspar Reserve product off the shelves and Also took the original Sherwin Williams HGTV Infinity off of the shelves and just put the Valspar Reserve into the SW Infinity can. They also took the exterior Valspar Reserve and changed the name to Sherwin Williams HGTV Everlast. 6 months later they brought Valspar Reserve back onto the shelves with a completely different formula. Sherwin Williams also changed all the other Valspar formulas in all the other products as well. If you haven't tried the Sherwin Williams HGTV Infinity and Everlast you should. They are really great paints as well.
Totally agree. This paint almost feels like a fine grit sandpaper once it dries. I'll take this over the valspar signature which has a very soft finish and doesn't feel durable at all. This paint dries much harder and is therefore much more durable but I'd go with something like Sherwin Williams Duration over this.
I like Duration as well. Very durable and easy to work with. Coverage is average which I wouldn't have suspected until I compared it to other SW products. The cool thing about these tests is I learn a lot too!
Used this today paid $52 at Lowe’s added flowtrol covered great went on like butter put a very rough finish .tomorrow I’ll put on the second coat.but I’ll go back to Behr much smoother and I think a little cheaper🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I’ve been painting furniture for MANY YEARS AND I PAID $55 for this Valspar Reserve at Lowe’s a couple days ago… this is the WORST PAINT I have ever used in all the time I’ve been painting! Two coats and you could still see the primer underneath, so I did one more coat. Not only that, but it is a disaster for streaks. I used a foam rolling brush, a complete disaster. I’m going back to get my money back for this tomorrow . I spent a fortune on this because I wanted something very durable. I don’t even know how this can be on the market.

So is new Valspar Reserve any good?
