Stories ~ Brother Louie 1973 Soul Purrfection Version

- Опубліковано 1 сер 2018
- Michael Brown was a founding member of 60's band Left Banke which pioneered the "baroque pop" sound of their hit single "Walk Away Renee" a #5 hit in 1966. After a few more singles, Brown left the band and met singer Ian Lloyd. Assembling a Beatlesque band, he hired drummer Bryan Madey and guitarist Steve Love to complete them and signed with Kama Sutra records in 1972. Their first hit was "I'm Coming Home" a #42 hit that same year. Brown then left the band who went on to add bassist Kenny Aaronson and keyboardist Ken Bichel. They began to record their second LP adding a cover of little known tune called "Brother Louie" that had been written by Errol Brown and Tony Wilson and performed by UK band Hot Chocolate. The song was about a white man bringing his black girlfriend home to meet his parents who turn out to be racists. The message was timely and the association of the repeated "Louie Louie Louieee" chorus paid tribute to the rock chestnut "Louie Louie" by the Kingsmen brought them instant recognition and a #1 pop hit for two weeks. Stories went on to record two more singles that failed to rival "Brother Louie" and the band broke up over the squabbles over the direction they should take. Ian went solo, his only hit being the Ric Ocasek written "Slip Away" that spent nine weeks on the chart, peaking at #50 in 1979. A couple of interesting footnotes to this story is that at a 1976 Lloyd recording session, Mick Jones and Ian MacDonald met and went on to find Lou Gramm to rock the pop charts as Foreigner. The second is when Gladys Knight heard "Brother Louie" she had Neil Bogart approach Stories producer Richie Wise and Kenny Kerner to produce "I've Got To Use My Imagination". She loved the sound they came up with and it resulted in a #4 pop and #1 R&B hit for her and her Pips.

No kidding? My gosh I'm getting old. 50 years no shit?
Holy Jesus!! The memories of the summer of 1973 this brings back!!!! I bought this 45 at the local Woolworth's that summer (I was 13) and I played it so much I wore it out!! As far as music goes, I am forever stuck in the '70s (1970-1976), and it makes me very, very sad to know that music of this caliber will never be in the forefront ever again. A tight combo with excellent string arrangements; a song with basic, yet completely effective melodic hooks and lyrics that would awaken the listener and make them think, as the subject of an interracial relationship was a controversial topic at the time. Thankfully those relationships today are no longer rare or controversial, and this is one of the great changes that has taken place in our society (and in the world) since that time. As to this extended version, well done my friend, and to quote many others, it is truly perfection!!!!
How does this comment not have more likes?
I’m a 90’s kid but I also keep listening to 70’s music.
Hey Steven, I'm 58 and like you always listening to 70s and 80s music, I only discovered this track last year then checked out the original written by Errol Brown of Hot Chocolate, such great lyrics, I'm not usually a fan of cover versions but there are some which are better than the original, this being one of them

Love 70s music. The writers and singers really knew how to tell a story with their songs.
We started losing that in the 90's. Songs became more and more commercial.
You got that wright BROTHER LOL My 2 fav years were 72 and 79
Now that’s the truth. And sing, from the heart and with so much passion, because they actually loved what they did and it wasn’t all about the almighty dollar, it was for their love of getting together, hanging out, and making us feel better enjoying them. The songs told portions of their life, experience, relationship ups and downs, and all in between, also they didn’t use stuff to distort their voices, back in those days, a man was a friggin man and kept on getting it. If only the youth of today knew what that meant, also having a work ethic, morals and values. These ones today can’t decide what gender they want to be, depends on what the ones are telling the old man in Washington to them, it changes daily. Anyway forget all that, I only discovered this band was white, I hadn’t seen a picture of them before, I am discovering alot about my 70’s & some 80’s, like I was unaware once you put earbuds in your ears, you discover WORDS their saying, we only had 3 channels on the tv, with a tall antenna, that’s when we had a tv at all, daddy would get mad at Dusty Rhoades wrestling Rick Flair, not going daddy’s way, then boom outside went the tv
Damn sure glad I grew up back in these times, the variety of musical bands, and musical instruments brought people from all cultures together. Brings back great memories!!
No doubt about it, dam those sure were the good ole days

This song has to be one of the most underrated classics from the 70's. First time I've heard this extended version and there's nothing not to like about it as well!
I was in my second year of high school when this was released, and I listen to this very attentively. I rationalize that love has no color, despite skin (external) differences. All of us, are created by God in his image, and likeness. We are of the (Earth) and for this reason, we should learn to tolerate each other and respect one another. This song is quite a shock, if you can't accept different relations between two people in love. Lastly, never forget that love is from "God". He blessed us with his emotion, love. All of you, have a great day in America.
Amen,Amen and Amen!!!

I have just recently discovered that my older sister had never heard the full song, our radio would cut out the part where he/she was put firmly in their places. I too am a 70’s kid, and am so thankful I was. Because I honestly don’t think I would want to grow up in these screwed up times. We certainly didn’t have all this hatred towards the opposite race. For the most part everybody knew their place and was respectful of it. Our opposite race was friends only, trust that, in our family, you had better not cross that line, the girls more so than the boys, was told the girls would get taken advantage of because we didn’t know about the other race and their culture, that was true, we was raised in the deep woods, away from people in general, only in church and school

I love the strings combined with the other instruments
The Temptations used strings in their hits too
God gives us all our minds to choose.. never judge a book by it's cover.. or let others influence your opinion.. give everyone a chance.. u don't walk in thier shoes..

Me too! The beginning of our teenage years. We had the best music. ❤
The band that I was in the mid seventies, we alway played this song. One of the best sounds of the 70's!!!!
Thanks to UA-cam we can still enjoy true music classics unlike todays noise. This takes me back to my junior year in high school. Now I'm in my senior years of life. Where did time go?
This is REAL TALK....1973, EVEN 2019
