From watching David Brown tractors picking up hay on the farm to feeding the new born calf's and learning how to drive a tractor, what a day we had filming at Hill Top Farm in Herefordshire in the rural village of Stoke Prior. Ben Godfrey owner of Hilltop showed us around his old farm which has been in the family for generations and once a former dairy milk producer for the area. But amongst the cows and hay he had a few classic Case David Brown tractors that were worth investigating. The David Brown 966 from 1979 which has seen better days and the Case international with Hydro Shift which was put into action out on the fields collecting hay for the bale catcher and stored then in near by barns.
So what is the hydra Shift? Well to be honest I was a bit confused at first, but that's just probably me! The transmission uses two sets of epicyclic gears, plus hydraulically operated clutch packs and band brakes, to produce four ratios with clutchless shifts. Coupled to a three-speed (plus reverse) gearbox, that provides 12 forward and three reverse speeds and this was a rather revolutionary transmission in the early 1970s.

Passed a tractor test when I was sixteen on a David Brown.
I also passed my test on a David Brown 1390 in 1984 when I was 16. 👍

The first tractor I ever rode was a case international 385. It was a 2wd that had a rops and canopy. I hope to get that same one some day

Your for getting about the 995 which is basically the same as the 996, only the 996 has the hand pto clutch
