if there is going to be a void type of place in below zero, i wouldnt want there to be a leviathan that already exists in the game. i would want it to be one gigantic creature like the giant skeletal remains in the lost river
I would think there probably will be :) it's a neat way to limit the playable area.....and (as scary as it'd be) I'd also love a new - giant hostile creature.
I can just imagine if instead of teleporting you, they played a cutscene where the player is drifting out a massive roar echoing throughout the world as a giant creature rises up in the darkness to devour you
The planet is massive compared to the 2x2 kilometer crater we get to play in, and we see evidence of this when we fly off using the Neptune Escape Rocket, where when completing the "slingshot manuever" to launch to the nearest gateway, we can see the two dry islands, which are close together and are probably the size of Hawaii compared to the planet. So, we can safely assume either nothing or much, much more lives past Crater's Edge. Maybe as far down as 10,000 kilometers is the seabed, where more various, new types of fauna live. New leviathans, fish, plants, and maybe a new alien... I think (and I know Below Zero is coming out, but) this would make a wonderful DLC. Explore past the volcanic crater you've known to find beasts of unimaginable sizes and shapes, passive and aggressive, dangerous and pleasantly safe. If this to not be a DLC (which is most likely), than maybe a Gargantuan Leviathan would fit this empty, endless dark zone. Evolution from the millions of years of living past Crater's Edge due to being forced out there because of the shrinking geography of the map, they have taken to a lifestyle like that of the Sea Emporer and Ghost Leviathan, feasting on microscopic plankton and prey. Even though massive and beyond looking peaceful, this monstrosity is fretful and territorial, not used to empty, dark living conditions yet. If straying too deep or too far out past Crater's Edge, somehow dodging Ghost Leviathans, the player begins to hear the earsplitting calls of the nervous Gargantuan Leviathan. Eventually the player will inevitably run into it, and, to return the player to the map, it gobbles them up on a single gulp to get rid of this beasts thought of "threat," the player. Of course, the player would not see more than one at a time, due to the almost-extinct condition they'd be in, where I think there should only be one of the Gargantuan Leviathans per side of the square map. This would balance it out. OK I know this is long but I've wanted to talk about it for a while, and I know the game is in full-release already, so none if this I'd likely to happen. But ya know, wishful thinking...
That does sound really awesome :) I'd love to be able to explore other, deeper parts of the map with potentially huge and terrifying creatures roaming about....maybe in the DLC we'll get some of it.
What if this happened in a cutscene where the main character is travelling past the edge and his pda starts to warn him of a Massive life form ahead The player would then hear the creature gargantuan roar and see the faint glow of the creatures eyes approaching and then the side of the beasts face is Seen and it’s eye focuses on the player The player then turns back and try’s to get away but sees the creatures jaw start to close on top of them and (depending on if their in the cyclops or mantis) either has the cyclops crushed or the mantis consumed it would then go to a game over
To me the void shouldn’t be a bottomless pit, the 3000m end should continue on like a seabed, but since this is a total ocean planet it would probably be a short plateau before dropping off down at 8000m maximum for the abyssal plains, only the deeper parts will be geological marks like trenches or open rifts. I’ve always had this amazing idea for Subnautica if you were to play on one of those big islands and go far out, the water reaching a kilometer below you. A kind of Leviathan that you don’t see immediately, but it creates a whirlpool that sucks you and your sub in it’s gaping mouth, similar to Charybdis in Greek mythology (i think.) Yeah, it would make a good DLC. But I don’t think there are just so many ghost leviathans in the void, because inside the map there are GL eggs, it’s like the adults are defending their nest from a gargantuan leviathan, because I believe it feeds on GLs, because that would satisfy it’s hunger, and provides it energy for such a large beast, and the rest of the void is probably patrolled by the gargantuan, seeking to devour a lone, wandering Ghost Leviathan for sustenance, and it’s probably lived this way for how long. It’s also probably a reason why the Precursors decided to establish their bases on a shallow place guarded by GL’s, their power alone would not match the gargantuan.
NoHaxJustXmod - you seem to forget that the virus killed of almost every living creature. There is possibly nothing alive except on the crater and the poles. The possibility is very slim almost zero but on the ocean floor should be a giant grave yard full of ginormous skeletons maybe even bigger than the eel thing inside the lost river.
@@nohaxjustxmod-sfs3984 Ghost Leviathans live in caves until they get to big for them and then move out to the void, that's why you find smaller ones and eggs on the crater.
Once upon logging into my save file in Subnautica, I swung myself away from a ledge using the Prawn suit grappling jump swing technique. Shortly thereafter, I realized I had just swung myself out into the void, and I immediately proceeded to panic and slap the break as hard as I could and drag myself back onto the land. As I climbed up, and turned around, I saw an Adult Ghost Leviathan disappearing into the darkness. Even though Ghost Leviathans do not scare me very much, that was a very uncomfortable experience.
I definitely believe you that it was uncomfortable :) just something about the void makes me feel uneasy - even while recording this footage in creative mode :)
That’s when you grapple and rodeo ride the leviathan! It might actually be a little more fun in the void, since they won’t get stuck on the edge of a cave while you slowly drill them to death. Grappling a reaper in the “safe” shallows was the most fun I ever had fighting a leviathan though. Due to the shallow seabed, the reaper kept jumping 30 m clear out of the water and dragging me along with it. That must be what bull rider feel like.
@@QualityPen reapers would sometimes just yeet me straight through the ground. One time my prawn suit got stuck cause there was a small enough space under the ground to land in but not large enough to get out of. I was pissed
I often forget that we are only in a volcanic crater, and standing at the edge looking out into the infinite dark expanse of the rest of the ocean makes me think of the manner of creature that lurks out there in the true deep
I think the lifepods on that side ended up failing and not launching, being the reason why you don't get 50 calls on the radio. The majority of the 150 man crew died in the ship. Correct me if i'm wrong
Or before they could land they got destroyed or lost radio connection to the other lifepods or aurora. Or just the pressure of the water caused them to crush
@@idunno3349 i think the page states that some didn't launch, and considering the state of the side of the aurora facing the void, I think the lifepods were probably destroyed lol
When this information was first put into the game it blew my mind. The entire map being a volcanic crater made too much sense. The lava zone is the volcano's magma chamber
Well you’d probably find a lot of skeletons and dead things, sort of like how in real life whale corpses float to the bottom of the ocean, you’d find lots of mostly eaten reapers sitting down there. It’d be like one massive boneyard that goes on and on, I’d think. The void is supposedly filled with reaper-types constantly hunting and killing each other non-stop to survive, as well as bacterial presence, but I don’t think you’d find anything like plants unless there were lava vents down there, since there isn’t any sunlight for photosynthesis to take place. Though this is an alien planet so there might have been plants down there at one point before the virus came along and wiped out everything. At the time when we are on the planet, the only biomes I think you’d find in the void are long, lifeless stretches of sand dunes dotted with massive skeletons of creatures long extinct, inactive rocky volcanoes that didn’t make it quite as far as the one we crashed on that form rocky crags and ravines splitting up the dead zones/boneyards like mountains in a desert, occasional active volcano pools that are probably frequented by the reapers living down there, and forests of lava vents spitting out essential nutrients that keep the few microbes alive. !SPOILERS AHEAD! I really hope we get to see a little bit of what the void looks like in Below Zero, or get a little bit more information on it. Now that enzyme 42 cured that virus, life should be beginning to move around a little more now. So the bright/top layer of the void could be populated by things like reefbacks, or schools of boomerangs moving from habitat to habitat. That’d be cool to see.
Joris Videos no that’s not what a dead zone means. Dead zone refers to a desert like place in which no plants survive. There is still live in dead zones on this planet it’s small microbes and leviathans. But other then that it’s dead.
I think when I do my steam game about exploring a cavern with life forms long forgotten by humanity and you play in cave sector 01 but if you go too far, you will enter cave sector 02 where 10 legged shadowy spiders hunt you down
The crater’s edge is easily the scariest place in the whole of subnatica!!! So the max depth you can dive to is 8 kilometres I was wondering if there was a limit to how deep you can go they really need to make a ocean floor in this game plus please make a size comparison video of all the subnatica creatures
The Last Bacon it just scares me how it’s a massive expanse of earey darkness and I’m gonna mention subnatica creatures in my top 10 scariest video game monsters list be sure to check that out plus have you heard of the bloop beneath the map ?
The Last Bacon thanks mate I’ll let you know when it’s made😊👍🏻 and there’s a video on it too just type in subnatica bloop👍🏻 it sounds pretty shocking but I won’t spoil anything

I was looking for the Degasi Island when I got lost in the middle of nowhere. I thought that I was in the Dead Zone, and if I was, I would be dead in a matter of seconds. Fortunately, I realized I was in the Crags Field. I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA DIE
I was looking for the sea treader's path to collect some poop for my bioreactor. Dumb as I was I used my submarine to swim at the surface. Suddenly: You are now entering the dead zone. Me: Huh, interesting. Found a new biome. "Only microscopic and leviathan class life detected" "Ok... Nah, as long as I don't make too much noise." - Sets speed to minimum and turns silent running on, proceeds further into the dark - Humongous Ghost Leviathan comes outta nowhere and immediately starts attacking my cyclops "HOLY SHIT WHERE DID YOU COME FROM?" - Drives backwards in silent running and at lowest speed not realising they are still on - But I made it back without losing my cyclops and that expensive prawn suit in there
Kilian Clasen The cyclops destruction sequence is so dramatic just like the constant flashing The sudden fires appearing around the base the multiple data screens are holograms appearing up in your face while you’re trying to drive and then the cyclops repeatedly telling you to get out as you keep trying to save it and get your prawn before it explodes
I like how instead of just putting an invisible wall or stopping the player, the devs created lore and made something out of it. Also hey its honestly crazy how you're responding to comments 5 years later, that's insane dedication.
Whenever I go to the pool with my siblings I tell them that deep end of the pool is called the craters edge, and if you stay there to long a monster will come to you and eat you. I’m such a good brother
I think that there could be other, extremely large leviathans past that 2000m metre mark, It could be maybe something from the new DLC, maybe it’s something bigger or as big as the sea emperor that could eat sea emperors or sea dragons, which could be the reason there are only three sea dragons left. I’m almost certain that there is because the PDA says it detects ‘Leviathan Class’ and not just ghost leviathans. What are your thoughts on this? BTW I loved the video.
Thank you very much :) I definitely agree - there is probably a reason why even the adult ghost leviathans hang around the crater edge - there might be much larger predators lurking out there in the darkness.
The Last Bacon there is in fact a concept of a creature which later was replaced by the dead zone. The creature was completely black and reacted aggressively to light, which meant you should leave your cyclops lights off. I dont know the exact name of the creature but it was certainly a concept.
I have a deep phobia of deep endless ocean. Especially when I cant se below me. When i visited the dead zone and I heard the ghost leviathans I was completely shook.
Occasionally I stumble across a channel that I expect to grow exponentially, and I think that this server is definitely one of them, keep up the great content!
The first time I experienced the void was when I was searching one of the islands, I took a wrong turn at one point and I thought it was taking a while but didn't question it, until I heard " Entering Biological Dead Zone " that scared the crap out of me and I tried escaping but immediately was getting attacked by a ghost Leviathan.
I have three theories on the map. When you go deep enough, the edge stops. This means the island is floating somehow. Theory1: reefback theory Like another commenter said, the whole map is a reefback. Tbh, it makes sense. The reefback leviathan is capable of carrying a coral reef on its back. It could be possible a colossal reefback could be carrying the whole map. And we can take this a step further. Maybe the are multiple colossal reefbacks, acting like floating continents. Theory2: floater theory Just like floater island, maybe a bunch of ancient floaters are holding up the map. Or, once again, bigger versions. Theory3: alien theory Sense we know the alien race on the subnautica planet is a type 3 civilization, its not that farfetched some energy source made from the aliens, is able to make a chunk of the sea floor rise. And we can take this further. Maybe, the map WAS apart of the sea floor, and when the aliens arrived, they couldn't get light from so far down, they made apart of the sea bed float. It makes a teensy bit of sense, seeing the size of the inhabitants, maybe thinking the adapted to the more shallow surface, or even becoming entirely new species. It makes more sense since the proccicutors have been there for 1000 years. Of course these aren't actually theories, more like what if's.
Wait but, when I used the terraformer and clipped through the ground I reached 30,000m and I wasn't teleported back, this was back in 2017 though. Edit: or 2018. I forgot
Well, when you clip through the ground, that’s not the same as falling into the void. I went through one of the portals in the PCF (can’t remember which one) and I fell through the ground on the was back. The same thing happened, it was probably fixed (as in you can’t fall through the world). Also the terraformer was removed.
The Terraformer actually made terrain around you to keep the illusion of a tunnel being dug and the ground being solid all the way through when in reality the ground is a thin textured play area that is empty on the other side. As when I used to play with the terraformer and interactive environment I would put ground close to a hatch door to get out of bounds and have an easier time constructing a base in the mountain island or "underground". Thats why the terraformer made the game lag a bit as it was removing the terrain inside of the voxel toolbar, and replacing it with textured terrain on the outer edges to give the illusion of digging and having a larger world. Though as one of the things I mentioned I did with it myself it broke the game so they tookcit out and because it could add to much render and load making the game crash. The environment is like this as then they can then have more time, space, and render to add in more and better objects and have amazing graphics, content, and run speed. So in short well you may have been that deep thinking the ground was solid, but you actually made a 40km deep tube around yourself well everything was the void. If you glitched out of that tube or got under the map you probably would have seen a single long cylinder going down and down as it would have to render texture on both sides for areas the game registered as play areas and not the out of bounds
I remember finding the edge on accident when I was exploring the Grand Reef. Got the warning message and just kinda froze. Ghost came shooting up from beneath, rammed me and I was out of there faster than I'd ever done anything. Damn near pissed myself.
Yep, had a similar experience one time - but was on the surface :) the think came from below and let's just say I didn't come back to the game for a few days...
The teleport happens at 8192 which is the 13 bit integer limit (2¹³). This is probably the largest value that the game can handle. My guess is that your height is stored in 14 bits with 2 for parity, meaning the sky is as high as the ocean is deep.
Also, it's cool that you still interact with your commenters years later. I only got the game this May, so there's a lot of us still discovering the game. It's probably one of my all time favourites now and love watching your content on it. Keep up the great work.
So basically My aunt was playing the game for me and she needed to go to the gun island and she kinda'over shot the location of it and then heard -warning entering ecological dead zone-the last thing my eyes saw where the sea moth being yeeted across the dead zone by the big ghost boi.
I really want to see a mod that if you go 2 km into the dead zone horizontally it spawns the Imperator (the massive skeleton in the lost river and concept made by IGP) in and it will hunt you AND the ghost leviathans down.
One thing I’ve noticed. The gargantuan leviathan skeleton says it probably lived long ago in a vastly different environment. It seems like those would be the kind of things that live outside the crater, and one unlucky one got trapped in the lost river thousands of years ago during an eruption
Anybody remember that giant dead leviathan? Yes someone made a mod on it I think, and would love to see that to be the entities lurking within the dark depths of the dead zone.
fun fact: If you go UNDER the map at the mark that the map ends you can find really weird terrain and random flat spaces you can actually build on and it is accessible with the cyclops (if you don't get chomped by the ghost leviathans (and so far I have found two and there may be more platforms so that's pretty cool (and in below zero you can actually find some sort of a bottom to it that expands a vast distance and actually has terrain which is also pretty cool)
I think it would be cool if, once you go to far from the playable area a cutscene would play where you get eaten by a gargantuan leviathan or something crazy like that.
One of the theories I heard that caught my eye was that Dead Zone might've potentially been a place where Sea Emperor Leviathans used to live before precursors started doing expetiments on the last (known) living speciment and her eggs. It is mentioned that Sea Emperors diet consist only of the microorganisms, which are present in the Dead Zone.
Oh definitely :) because of their size and the description of organisms that would inhabit the crater edge - I would definitely think that they used to live there in herds.
I remember my first time seeing the void.... I knew about the island and and it both, decided to head there a bit early because i wanted the multipurpose room. Of course, i missed where it was by a pretty huge margin, and suddenly my PDA was announcing i'd arrived in the deadzone. I whipped around and ran back to the crater so fast my wrist hurt, but the ghost leviathan didn't have enough time to catch me.
What if there was something below 5000m that would eat you if you got too close I'd call it "phantom leviathan" that is two times bigger then the sea Emperor. Survive that and get to 10000m you would see the "Titan" crush the Phantom that was chasing you whole and starts chasing you that is 10 times bigger then the Phantom. Survive that thing and get to 20000m (Which sounds insane) the Titan runs away and you'd meet "Death's son" you only see it's hand which is the size of the Aurora that crushes you and before that you'd S*** your pants. However if you escape and go back to the craters edge you would get a message saying "You MADLAD!!!"

2nd-day streaming Subnautica back in April, I hit the Crater's Edge on the surface, so I was like, "Hmmm, looks like the out of bounds area, I better turn back." When I did, a huge translucent tentacle was out of the water and in front of me. I paddled my ass back to the Safe Shallows so fast...it wasn't until later when I realized that I saw one of the Ghosties spawn and attempt to grab me from below. This video is giving my PTSD from even thinking of that Ghostie coming to eat me! I kept pausing the video just WAITING for the Ghosts to appear.
First time I found the craters edge I was looking for lifepod 7. I had my prawn suit and saw a deep drop. I got out to explore but my Prawn wasn't above ground, I tried swimming for It but was then promptly eaten by a ghost leviathan.

@@nohaxjustxmod-sfs3984
Ghost Leviathans live in caves until they get to big for them and then move out to the void, that's why you find smaller ones and eggs on the crater.
I fucked up an adult ghost leviathan easily.
@@QualityPen reapers would sometimes just yeet me straight through the ground. One time my prawn suit got stuck cause there was a small enough space under the ground to land in but not large enough to get out of. I was pissed

If you actually imagine that it actually is a crater and somewhere down there there are biomes and animals plants stuff.. woah
That’d be cool to see.

oh hey yellowEyedGuy
@@TrainsGD who r u lol
I have three theories on the map.
When you go deep enough, the edge stops. This means the island is floating somehow.
Theory1: reefback theory
Like another commenter said, the whole map is a reefback. Tbh, it makes sense. The reefback leviathan is capable of carrying a coral reef on its back. It could be possible a colossal reefback could be carrying the whole map. And we can take this a step further. Maybe the are multiple colossal reefbacks, acting like floating continents.
Theory2: floater theory
Just like floater island, maybe a bunch of ancient floaters are holding up the map. Or, once again, bigger versions.
Theory3: alien theory
Sense we know the alien race on the subnautica planet is a type 3 civilization, its not that farfetched some energy source made from the aliens, is able to make a chunk of the sea floor rise.
I mean, all three of those theories sound like possibilities to me :) though I'm not sure if the edge "end" is considered canon.
The blue ball zone, idk how it’s called, looks like the back of a reefback, the colors and the fauna
Impossible - the crater is very notably a vulcano so it has a connection to the core of the planet. It's just a game design limitation.
Wait but, when I used the terraformer and clipped through the ground I reached 30,000m and I wasn't teleported back, this was back in 2017 though.
Edit: or 2018. I forgot
I think it was possible in the older versions of the game but has since been patched out :)
Exactly, that was 2017 now it’s 2019 pretty sure some updates have came out since
Well, when you clip through the ground, that’s not the same as falling into the void.
That ghost leviathan scared the hell out of me when it first spawned in
I think this has to be the only game where a map boundary makes sense and the lore just adds story
It is certainly a nice way to do it yep! :)
I remember finding the edge on accident when I was exploring the Grand Reef. Got the warning message and just kinda froze. Ghost came shooting up from beneath, rammed me and I was out of there faster than I'd ever done anything. Damn near pissed myself.

The teleport happens at 8192 which is the 13 bit integer limit (2¹³). This is probably the largest value that the game can handle. My guess is that your height is stored in 14 bits with 2 for parity, meaning the sky is as high as the ocean is deep.
Yep that's exactly the case :) The water surface is at 0 on the vertical axis.

I really want to see a mod that if you go 2 km into the dead zone horizontally it spawns the Imperator (the massive skeleton in the lost river and concept made by IGP) in and it will hunt you AND the ghost leviathans down.
I definitely like that idea too :)
One thing I’ve noticed. The gargantuan leviathan skeleton says it probably lived long ago in a vastly different environment. It seems like those would be the kind of things that live outside the crater, and one unlucky one got trapped in the lost river thousands of years ago during an eruption
Yeah definitely seems like that would be the case :)
Anybody remember that giant dead leviathan? Yes someone made a mod on it I think, and would love to see that to be the entities lurking within the dark depths of the dead zone.
Yep :) I covered the mod!
me : Finally i got Subnautica
me: Okay lets go to the edge
me : sees the ghost leviathan

fun fact: If you go UNDER the map at the mark that the map ends you can find really weird terrain and random flat spaces you can actually build on and it is accessible with the cyclops (if you don't get chomped by the ghost leviathans (and so far I have found two and there may be more platforms so that's pretty cool (and in below zero you can actually find some sort of a bottom to it that expands a vast distance and actually has terrain which is also pretty cool)
Yep true :) It's a creepy area for sure!
I think it would be cool if, once you go to far from the playable area a cutscene would play where you get eaten by a gargantuan leviathan or something crazy like that.
