I'm pretty sure the Aurora landed on a section of the Safe Shallows. Coral tubes can be found virtually all around the crash site. Since these coral tubes can only be found in the Safe Shallows, I'd say it's pretty safe to assume that the Aurora did not land on a previously Reaper-inhabited area. It is likely that the Reapers came from the closeby Mountains when the Aurora crashed and inhabited the zone that was destroyed.
That is true, also the waters around the ship aren't that deep - that's why the leviathans only stick around the back and the nose, so it would make sense that they only came to ''explore'' after the crash.

I had a reaper leviathan friend once. One particular day, i wanted to face my fears and feed a reaper leviathan a peeper. I grabbed a couple peepers and swam to the lion's den behind the Aurora. I found the closest one swimming near the hills. I carefully swam near him and he rammed into me, and ate a few peepers. I noticed how big he was at that moment. I fed him a few more, but then he started attacking me a bit. He bit me once, ate another peeper, and then shoved me into his mouth. I thought i was dead, until the darkness faded and i was still where i was. I know this was likely a glitch, but i thought of it as him sparing me. A few days later, i decided to make a base near the lion's den. I built one right near the hills, and i could always hear him roaring. I made a big aquarium so the peepers would breed and i could always feed him. After a bit of feeding him, he started to stop attacking me. I later gave him a name, the name i called him for short: Reapy (lol). I started feeding him twice a day, for breakfast and dinner. I actually started calling him a pet, and soon a friend. After i got all materials, i built the rocket. I was very sad that i had to leave reapy, and i stayed an extra day to say my goodbyes. I left a time capsule, with a picture of him and a small description of him and the items i left. I still miss him, and i hope some day i will go to the same planet and see him again.
Ill be honest, in my first play through of Subnautica, when i first managed to scan a reaper, the info about the echolocation scared me almost as much as the reapers themselves. Suddenly hearing one in the distance was just as scary as spotting a glimpse of one 100 or so meters below me. I stand by my claim that Subnautica is a horror game.
@Digi Gacha official I agree. I honestly can not do actual horror games, but I would say subnautica is the closest I've come to playing fully through an actual horror game. it has its moments, but the sheer wonder of exploring its world is more than enough to put my worries at ease... i like exploration, its fun.
4:35 it probably was intentional! Oarfish are famous for being mistaken as sea monsters by fisherman and seafarers in the 1600’s. They probably took the coloration and shape of the oarfish due to this.
@@TheLastBacon It's less horror - it doesn't rely on one-off jumpscares (though it uses them often). Instead it preys on terror, keeping you in the dark as much as possible and doing whatever it can to make you fear what's ahead. There's only one creature that can actually one-hit kill you, even without the reinforced diving suit, and that's the sea dragon with its bite attack. The game will purposefully let you get away and live in even more fear of that area without losing everything. It also gets your blood pumping with the chasing and fleeing
Part of what makes them so scary is you encounter them pretty early in the game. You get used to everything being pretty much harmless, with a few aggressive fish but not nightmare fuel. Then suddenly you hear this terrifying roar
It's late at night, and you're on your way towards the Aurora to repair its reactors after getting finished making your radiation suit. You were inside of your seamoth heading straight towards the Aurora not expecting much as everything on this alien world has either been A Minor threat or harmless, you can remember your first encounter with a bone shark and stalker but only came out with a few injuries. Nothing your medkit couldn't fix. The seamoth was good at illuminating the area in front of you but you couldn't shake off the fact that you were being watched or perhaps you were just paranoid. You put those thoughts in the back of your mind assuming you were just paranoid, then you hear a roar.
Open world game QnA: “how do you escape an enemy?” Minecraft: “calm down you have ender pearls” Terraria: “calm down the ones that actually pose a threat don’t arrive yet” Red Dead Redemption: “calm down you got horse” Grand Theft Auto: “vroom vroom” Skyrim: “calm down you have fast travel” Fallout: “calm down you have fast travel” Breath of the Wild: “calm down you have fast travel with a cooler cinematic than simply walking away” Subnautica: “want me to start writing your final will and testimony?”
For some reason the Reaper Leviathan scares me more than the Ghost or Sea Dragon leviathans. I think it’s because you can go the entire game without crossing paths with them, unlike the Ghost or Sea Dragon Leviathans, so I never had to face my fears.
That's a decent way of putting it The ghost and dragons are in places you have to go, and you're in the relative safety of your huge Cyclops, and on top of that, both have pretty small aggro and chase radius, for balance purposes of course, so it's not too tough to avoid them, and simple to escape. But the reapers will patrol vast swaths of ocean, and chase you down, so the only tactic for dealing with them is to stay away from them altogether
@@potaterjim Or you can just kill them. They respawn at their original location which is fine. Had one Reaper that took to patrolling my base and in general became a pain in the ass to deal with.
I think they are more terrifying because they would be the most painful death. There are 2 reasons for this: 1: The giant claw-arms that the reaper has probably dig deep into your body when they grab onto you. 2: It May look like it swallows you whole, but it would probably chew it’s prey when it is in their mouth. This is because their mouth is probably not big enough to swallow a adult human body whole. But that’s just my thoughts.
AverseGamer 11 i did the same. Used that grappling hook thingy to attach my prawn suit to him. Dragged me over a few biomes while I was stabbing and drilling lol. Killed a few of them actually. They are no match for the prawn suit really. But still scary :D
I like how the animals in this game act like actual animals. I also really love the mandibles on the Reaper's faces, I think it's an amazing evolutionary trait.
my biggest problem is that, to me, the reaper should be the bigger one compared to the ghost. the ghost deals less damage, is less agressive and its an herbivore. the mandibules of the reaper look like something that can grab a ghost. so i seriously dont get why they made the reaper be the weaker one lore wise.
@rustyshackleford234 Not exactly. They start off as apex predators, before roaming to the void due to their size increasing. Fun Fact: Ghost Leviathand in the void are 1.15x the size of the ones found in the Northern Blood Kelp Zone and Grand Reef. This suggests that they grow forever.
Uhm, I'm honestly not sure - haven't tried killing one myself but considering you can scan the giant skeletons in the lost river, the idea isn't too far fetched :)
Triggered Happy Or do what i do. *MATADOR THE LEVIATHAN INTO CHARGING AND SCANNING IT LITTLE BY LITTLE TILL I HAVE WHAT I WANT, THEN GETTING THE HELL OUTTA DODGE BARELY ESCAPING ITS MIGHTY JAWS*
I believe it's because some players don't even see the reaper all game long, as it is seemingly the least necessary leviathan class lifeform in the game, there's only one at the front of the aurora, so when you go there you probably won't see one. the best lost river entrance in the bulb zone is near the mountains, and there are 2 other entrances not needing to see reapers. and finally, officer keen's lifepod, the one in the sparse reef, is a similar example to the bulb zone. Even though it is close, you probably won't see one. That, imo, is why reapers are the scariest. (also forgot to mention building the cyclops, i got all the parts i needed from other biomes, and the ones from the aurora i got i hadn't seen a single one.) So, that's why i think reapers are the scariest. Not to mention that they can instantly wreck your vehicle, and get a quick snack from the player themselves ;).
The only reason you’d steer clear of a reaper is probably because you wondered into one early game in a seamoth, I literally use my drill arm against a ghost leviathan in my prawn suit because I know that it won’t be able to destroy me
My favorite thing about them is that you can tame them. I remember the first time I saw a video about it and became way too attached to the idea. I have an aquarium full of food for it and it's been alive for a year now. I am not going to finish the game, I am not going to progress, I am going to live a normal life.
When i heard it's roar for the first time while exploring the crash zone, my immediate reaction was nope nope nope, that doesn't sound good. That's when it's face pops out grabs my seamoth and breaks it. The scariest experience ever in a non horror game.
Well...ramming a Reaper two times with the Seamoth and blowing 4 grav-torpedoes aswell as 2 poison torpedoes up in its face did the job of killing it just fine. Hull was at 62% afterwards.
My fear of the Reaper Leviathan comes from when I played the vr version. My friend says the ghost leviathan is scary in vr but when you aren't expecting it the reaper can scare the crap out of you especially when the vr version makes everything bigger.
Please look into what attacked the Deep Grand Reef Degasi Seabase. People say it's a Reaper due to the roar, but Marguerit caught one so it could have just been it roaring whilst dying, and people also say a Sea Dragon attacked it, coming for the bleeding Reaper, and also, the DGR Seabase was next to an entrance to lava zones, so it could be plausible for that time.
But, i mean like the reaper was bleeding, luring a Sea Dragon, and the Sea Dragon killed everything. Keep in mind, people say the PDAs say that it has tentacles.
@@ryeo9907 the dragon uses his tentacles to swim, not attack. And i think they mean the face "claws" of the reaper. Thats the only animal from sub. That attacks with anykind of tentacles
I haven't played in a while, so correct me if I'm wrong, I don't remember if what actually destroyed their base was a leviathan or not. I don't think it's possible that it was the Sea Dragon, as it honestly is too far away to make sense, plus I don't think the Sea Dragon has nostrils to even smell blood, additionally the PDA mentions most fauna down in the Lava Zones have thermal vision as their means of prey detection, not scent. I thought it could've been a Crabsquid, but the fact they had the entire time to build the base and live there suggests that many Crabsquid likely passed by without harming the place. In all honesty, I think it was a Ghost leviathan, as they live just a layer above, and have a long, skinny body, just enough to fit through the holes and into the Deep Grand Reef. They live within plausible range and they're the only creature in the area that seems like it'd be able to puncture metal, aside Warpers of course.
i've purposely avoided encountering a reaper in my multiple playthroughs, but i've still had like 5 nightmares about them specifically. that's how scary they are to me haha.
@@boorgir2425 yes, and also Ghost leviathan is 2 time harder to kill rather than Reaper leviathan, I try to kill one juveline in the lost river and it take almost 15 minutes to kill
Back when I only had only played around an hour or so of Subnautica, I wanted to go to the Aurora, but hadn’t got the radiation suit yet. I thought that the back of the Aurora was the entrance, so I stocked up on medkits and swam over, restoring health with the medkits every so and so. The funny thing is, I didn’t encounter the reapers there, and instead got lost under the Aurora (I tried to swim under thinking the entrance was there -_-) and drowned. So when I heard about how the back of the Aurora was dangerous because of reapers, I was just like: “...ok...”.
I went to check out the back of the Aurora I’ve watched UA-cam about the game. I knew reapers existed. But thought they were only in the lava area. So I never seen a reaper or heard it. So I heard the roar and mistake it for a stalker. So I thought it will be ok. Then I saw the reaper. Didn’t know what a reaper looked like but knew they existed. But still knew it HAD to be a leviathan. It was a good distance away from me. So I just swam by. Next thing I know. (I’m above the water) WTF ITS IN MY FACE WHAT THE- (I’m dead) Edit: Never went to the back of the Aurora again even the this day. And I already have a prawn suit and a sea moth with one seamoth depth module. But still. Back of the Aurora? Nope.
To any worried about these guys: If you stay at their side when they’re chasing you, they can’t hit you, and they can’t turn nearly as well as a Seamoth or Seaglide, so just get to Lifepod 5 (I’m not actually sure if they can hurt a Seabase, so Lifepod 5 is your best choice, as nothing can hurt it) and just wait for it to leave. Edit: You can most definitely go into your Seabase. Just make sure you don't crash into it with your Seamoth. Also, to avoid getting that Seamoth attacked, you should get a Moonpool (both fragments in and near the Wreck in the Sparse Reef) before going to areas with Reapers to keep it safe from them if they chase you.
I was literally paralysed with shock the first time I encountered a reaper leviathan I was just like holy shit!!! And the 2 scariest creature sounds in the game are the reaper sound and the ghost sound the ghost sound is definitely the scariest because it literally sounds like people screaming!!!

I was shuffling cards and I didn't expect the audio of the Reaper Leviathan to come on and it scared me so I dropped my cards, and it hit my ukulele and it played a nice note. Thanks ukulele for keeping me happy and sane :')
Fun fact, the reason why the reaper has the long horn is because of its sound, this was never said by the developers but I assume this because in other animal cases such as cassowary’s, basically huge chicken dinosaurs, they have the exact horn that helps them make calls and sounds.
I'm late to the party but I've got a Reaper story of my own. So, once I reached the end of the game, I had my rocket built and ready to take off and everything else was done, but I never got to scan a Reaper. I had a Cyclops, Prawn suit, Seamoth and a base and didn't want to leave it all behind, so I decided I'd scan a Reaper no matter what. I started with the cyclops, ramming into it at full speed over and over, figuring it did something at least. As the battle raged on, my cyclops succumb to the damage and I quickly dropped my Seamoth and started leading the way to my base where my prawn suit was. It caught me before I could slip away, and caught and dragged my seamoth. I fired every torpedo I had into its face until I ran out and my seamoth was destroyed. As I got my bearings, I realized where we were. I leapt into my moon pool, grabbed my prawn suit and grappled to the Reaper, drilling into it as it thrashed violently. It caught my prawn suit, threw me around multiple times before I finally got a foothold. As I dug in to slaughter it, it caught and threw me again, but didn't go further. It had somehow gotten stuck in my moon pool. I grappled to it from behind and drilled into it until its thrashing ceased and it fell to the ocean floor. My prawn suit was nearly destroyed, its display cracked and cockpit leaking. The thrashing of the Reaper destroyed my base and it quickly began to fill with water. It took everything I had, but the Reaper had fallen. I waved goodbye to my Prawn suit and my base who made my escape possible, then took off into the stars, leaving nothing behind.

Crazy seeing how much you grew in the last 2 years. I still remember when you had no more then a thousand subs. Doing a great job keep the good quality content coming
The very first time I saw a reaper was upon entry of the Dunes. I was in my seamoth, then this bad motherf*cker comes out of nowhere. My sound was off so I couldn't hear the Reaper. My heart never beated the same after that. Pro tip: Don't look back when being chased.
Reaper leviathans use echo-location to hunt. That means if you can hear them, they can see you. They did not previously inhabit the area where the Aurora is now, but they came there because they heard the noise the Aurora made, and they thought it was a bunch of food, and that's why they are there.
3:24 this gives me flashbacks to when I lost my first prawn messing around in creative mode in 2016 when I got the game. Every time I hear them I think of all the prawns I’ve lost. But hey at least I killed one by glitch trapping it and drill arming.

I think the Crash Zone was originally a huge biome that linked all the reaper areas in the game now. When the Aurora crashed, it drew the reapers to stay in the few locations where the most wreckage landed because of the sounds they would produce.

I once was in my seamoth goin home from the Aurora (I was looking for cyclops engine fragments) when a reaper followed me all the way back to the safe shallows. When I noticed that, I hopped in my prawn and thought it would be an ez kill since It was shallow and there was places to walk.
Oh definitely, Subnautica can sometimes creep me out way more than your average horror game :)
@Digi Gacha official I agree. I honestly can not do actual horror games, but I would say subnautica is the closest I've come to playing fully through an actual horror game. it has its moments, but the sheer wonder of exploring its world is more than enough to put my worries at ease... i like exploration, its fun.

Reapers when they see a seamoth: Guys, our food delivery has arrived!
Part of what makes them so scary is you encounter them pretty early in the game. You get used to everything being pretty much harmless, with a few aggressive fish but not nightmare fuel. Then suddenly you hear this terrifying roar
Yeah the reaper is still scary to me even all these years later :)
Or better yet when you don’t hear it at all because you took your headset off for a sec

For some reason the Reaper Leviathan scares me more than the Ghost or Sea Dragon leviathans. I think it’s because you can go the entire game without crossing paths with them, unlike the Ghost or Sea Dragon Leviathans, so I never had to face my fears.
That's a decent way of putting it
The ghost and dragons are in places you have to go, and you're in the relative safety of your huge Cyclops, and on top of that, both have pretty small aggro and chase radius, for balance purposes of course, so it's not too tough to avoid them, and simple to escape.
Well you have to go get the space ship blueprints in the aurora
I think they are more terrifying because they would be the most painful death. There are 2 reasons for this: 1: The giant claw-arms that the reaper has probably dig deep into your body when they grab onto you. 2: It May look like it swallows you whole, but it would probably chew it’s prey when it is in their mouth. This is because their mouth is probably not big enough to swallow a adult human body whole. But that’s just my thoughts.
I've beaten the game several times without coming across one. But when I do it still scares the shit out of me.
I had a prawn suit with a drill arm and when he grabbed me i literally just drilled his face

Yeah it is very cool for sure :)
my biggest problem is that, to me, the reaper should be the bigger one compared to the ghost. the ghost deals less damage, is less agressive and its an herbivore.
the mandibules of the reaper look like something that can grab a ghost. so i seriously dont get why they made the reaper be the weaker one lore wise.

Oh I absolutely agree :) there is just something about them which freaks me out....
HEY, I KNOW YOU! :D

My fear of the Reaper Leviathan comes from when I played the vr version. My friend says the ghost leviathan is scary in vr but when you aren't expecting it the reaper can scare the crap out of you especially when the vr version makes everything bigger.
technically vr doesn't make anything bigger, its the normal perspective of subnautica that makes everything seem smaller
I do have a video on the Degasi but I'm not sure if it's possible to draw any definite conclusions from what we have right now :)
I am sure its a reaper she had the jagged metal lodged in its neck and the dragon is to large anyway for her to attack.

Dang, quite lucky I suppose :) I guess you just managed to find the one reaper-free path through!
(I’m above the water) WTF ITS IN MY FACE WHAT THE- (I’m dead)
Edit: Never went to the back of the Aurora again even the this day. And I already have a prawn suit and a sea moth with one seamoth depth module. But still. Back of the Aurora? Nope.
To any worried about these guys:
If you stay at their side when they’re chasing you, they can’t hit you, and they can’t turn nearly as well as a Seamoth or Seaglide, so just get to Lifepod 5 (I’m not actually sure if they can hurt a Seabase, so Lifepod 5 is your best choice, as nothing can hurt it) and just wait for it to leave.
That is indeed very good advice :)

Actually always look back. If u dont look back the reaper will at some point kinda speed up
Reaper leviathans use echo-location to hunt. That means if you can hear them, they can see you. They did not previously inhabit the area where the Aurora is now, but they came there because they heard the noise the Aurora made, and they thought it was a bunch of food, and that's why they are there.

I had to leave wipeout saving multiple times cuz of him >:(
Yeah they are certainly not very nice :)
I don't really know why, but the Reapers have always been my favorite for as long as I've known about Subnautica (about 2015). Whenever I see them, I make a ":D" sort of face in real life. Obviously if it's survival, I'm gonna freak out a bit and avoid them so I don't lose my stuff haha. But I've spent countless hours in creative mode swimming along side them or just watching them swim by themselves in the water. Like, not even as an exaggeration, I've probably spent at LEAST 24 hours of my life watching them and just hanging out with them
I totally get that :) They are my favorite creature in the game as well!
Words cannot describe how much I love this channel. That is for sure.
Someone get this man to one million subscribers.
He is so entertaining and I love to hear about his thoughts on Subnautica and other games.
Enough said.
Thank you very much for the kind words :) really appreciate the support!
@@TheLastBacon it's true. Idk why you domt have more subs. Especially since you got all this footage for us. I would have to buy more than one pair of pants
@@TheLastBacon Sorry for all the periods in my comment! I did not mean to sound like I was being sarcastic.
When I went to the Aurora because I heard you can go inside it after it explodes. When I was heading to the front I saw a reaper and it wasnt even close to me and for some reason I was starting to cry.
I understand :) reapers scare me to this day!
I once was in my seamoth goin home from the Aurora (I was looking for cyclops engine fragments) when a reaper followed me all the way back to the safe shallows. When I noticed that, I hopped in my prawn and thought it would be an ez kill since It was shallow and there was places to walk. Well since the reapers are supposed to be in deeper water, it decided to pop in and out of the ground when it felt like it. Killing it was hard since it barley was touchable but eventually it got stuck in a coral tube thing and I was able to kill it then
I've heard they sometimes follow you to the shallows - that must be such a pain :)
You know bacon so far you have a very kind fanbase
I know :) they're the best!
I was casually exploring the grassy plats and then you played the reaper roar and I panicked and paused and realised it was from the video
That must've been quite the scare :)
At first i shat my pants the first time i saw it...
Then i started hunting them for fun lol
It would be cool if you could see a sea dragon attacking a reaper occasionally while exploring
I would love to see a dragon eat a reaper :)
Im now very parnoid of wherever i go thinking im run into a leviathan 😭😭
I don't know why but I had a whack as dream about you in a cowboy outfit riding a Reaper like a bucking bronco, only the weird things were you were actually Ghost Rider, the Reaper was see-through like a Ghost Leviathan, and Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi was being blared in the background by a Peeper with lion-fish fins holding a boom box over his head.
This is what I get for binge-watching your videos before bed.
Haha sounds like an amazing dream :)
Interesting and entertaining video!
Thank you very much :)
“The Reaper LeviathOn”
- The Last Bacon
I'm still trying to forget that one :D
Everyone: Realer Leviathans Lore
Me: Rea Lev Lor
An intellectual I see :)
Subnautica in a nutshell:
Everyone:
*minding their own business*
*hearing the roar*
„Sigh…….guess I‘ll die?“
Yep, very accurate :)
Lol, remember when these bois where the scariest things in the game.
I think they mostly still are :)
@@TheLastBacon yeah, they still terrify me, but they're not as scary as say the gargantuan leviathan people put into the game using mods.
“A bit less friendly”
Just a little tiny small bit less friendly :)
"im going to tell you where to find them"
correction: you're telling us some places to avoid
Haha yeah that is true as well :D
So kinda sad story time
I recently got into this game, and my bf and bsf’s warned me “hey it’s a psychological horror game disguised as a survival game” and I have a bone chilling fear of two things in this game so far. Reaper Leviathans and The Void. So my first time I was going to the Aroura in survival I was talking to my bf saying “okay I’m gonna balls up and face the reaper, if I put on invisible (no aggression cheat) and just force the sea moth attack it won’t be so bad after that.” I made it there and made a mini base with a scanner room and I pinged the bastard. About 10-15 minutes pass as I’m watching it and literally a millisecond before I started going forward
A SECOND ONE SPAWNED RIGHT INFRONT OF ME AND THE OTHER.
Safe to say, I had a panic attack, deleted that save and actually cried for an hour afterwards.
Beautiful game, 10/10 I HATE that fucking mongaloid of a danger noodle
Oof that doesn't sound very pleasant! :)
When you said there is a real life creature that resembles the reaper I was scared like oh hell no if the reaper is real I noping my self off this planet and moving to mars ASAP
But then you showed the picture and I have never been more relieved in my life
You can’t get internet on mars so
Haha I feel you :) really glad some of these creatures don't live in our oceans.
The Last Bacon you never know only 5 percent was discovered
Tbh these bastards are atleast 13 meters long
Wow I saw a comment one day ago and it got replied to I just want you to know I think that’s really cool
Thanks :) I try to reply to as many comments as I can...
