  • Carp fishing rigs are a personal thing and even though I am happy with what I've been using, there is always room for improvement. After using the amnesia d-rig for a couple of years I wanted to find a similar carp rig but with more movement. This carp rig tying tutorial shows you how to tie my new favourite carp rig which I think is better than a Ronnie rig but can you name it?

    The reason why the people who run Korda and Nash fly around in private jets is because they've mastered the art of convincing carp anglers that they need 10 to 12 separate bits of tiny, fiddly, overpriced plastic, metal and silicone widgets (all made in China for pennies) to attach a bait to a hook.

      Made a few last night and gonna use them this weekend.
      The business end is....well the business. Decided to replicate that at 2 inches and tied onto a fluorocarbon boom with putty at the join. Sits lovely with the half a pop up just above the deck but with the movement I wanted near the hook. Almost invisible too I should imagine. Thanks again for the video, so easy to follow. 👍🏻

    Spot on, mate. I used to make that rig exactly the same as you, but with Bristle Filament instead.
    But when Kryston brought out the first coated braids on the market, Snakeskin, I think it was. And with the flexible section of the exposed braid at the hook end, it made the rig work a lot better.
    It's just a D rig with a kicker basically

    Yes, this rig has got a name. I came up with it in the early1990s on Savay lake. ( which is a story in itself). I named it the' Loaded rig'.. Its since been reinvented numerous times by others and not fully understood by many too. Obviously convergent evolution does occur with rig development. At least you were honest and said you didn't invent it!

    • @SimonDewCarpFishing
      @SimonDewCarpFishing  2 місяці тому +2

      I spoke to a guy who said he's been using it or something similar since the late 80s just goes to show it's almost impossible to come up with something completely "different" most rigs are just a variation on something that's come before. I do love this rig though and how it combines the anti tangle properties of a D rig with the turning capabilities of a combined style rig.

    Hi Simon, thanks for the really nice video and idea. I notice that these kind of rigs, amnesia d rig included, are often used in combination with some kind of buoyancy in the bait. Whats your idea about using them with steaight-out-of-the-bag and untipped baits? The resetting function would work and provably the whole mechanics will chance. Tia, Fabio

    • @SimonDewCarpFishing
      @SimonDewCarpFishing  3 місяці тому

      Hi the reason we tend to use buoyant baits with these rigs is because the bait sits nearer the eye of the hook which in turn helps the point on the hook drop down. For heavy baits such as bottom baits you want the bait to sit nearer the bend on the hook to achieve the same thing 👌

    • @fabiocarp78
      @fabiocarp78 3 місяці тому

      Thank you Simon i got it but I still have a "doubt" : when the carp approach the bait it sucks the boiie. Its a quantity of energy that "fight" with the weight of the boilies until it flyes into the mouth. So we could say that every bait has got a weightles moment when sucked in..so whats the difference? Hope to have explained properly, my english sucks :) whats your opinion? Tia , Fabio

    Hi again simon, you mentioned before about the downside of the D rig not having a supple section at the hook. Do you think that cost you bite or was there an experi3nce that made you think this is less than optimal. Im doing lots of tank tests at the moment and find the hook section can often fold back on to itself with the supple section. In fact of all my tests im tempted to conclude a D rig or clone rig is one of the few bottom bait presentations (maybe the only) that guarantess resetting and that the whole rig lays out entirely flat every time. Ive tried a lot as well.

    • @SimonDewCarpFishing
      @SimonDewCarpFishing  8 місяців тому

      I think it's not necessarily a bad thing if the rig can lay back on itself as it can give it more movement when the fish sucks at it if you know what I mean? I love the D-rig but always feel a little more movement could help trip up the bigger more cautious fish and it's certainly been working well for me. Both rigs work well so I'd be happy using either. If I'm in a rush the D rig is the quickest to tie 😉

    • @R3DP4TH
      @R3DP4TH 2 місяці тому

      I'm having similar results. Probably nothing to worry about but I can't help thinking that stiff section will interfere with pickups. I normally use a semi stiff german rig but wanted to try something a bit more supple.

    I will test the "Simon rig" next week. Due to the softness of the D loop, and the uncoated segment near the hook, theoretically, it has better mechanics than a chod rig with stiff monofilament, or Ronnie rig. Is a D loop better than using a micro swivel directly on the shank? Thank you for all your videos and hard work! Best wishes!

    • @SimonDewCarpFishing
      @SimonDewCarpFishing  4 дні тому +1

      The D loop is stiff mate. The only bit stripped back is the bit near the hook. The problem with a swivel on the shank is it can sometimes spin round and the bait gets stuck on the point. Not a problem with pop ups but bottom baits and wafters behave differently under water 👍

    Apart from the benefit of not having a soft hair to tangle. I believe this has no real edge over a normal ringed blowback or slip D rig. All very similar mechanics. If using foam or mesh then this isnt really required. Nice idea and one ive played with before. Always go back to line aligned blow back and large curve shank (muggas) Simon do you still use the withy as your go to pop up?

    • @SimonDewCarpFishing
      @SimonDewCarpFishing  8 місяців тому

      It's the fact it doesn't tangle that gives this rig the edge for me. Especially on waters where roach etc mess with your rigs. I've often wound in even with bags etc and the bait/hair is wrapped up and the rig wasn't fishing. This rig resets every time so you know its always fishing for you. For me that's a massive plus for using a D over a hair. Even the slip D can rotate around the hook and the bait becomes impaled on your hook. I've never had thst with this rig so it's a confidence thing. Those extra percent in your favour can be all the difference. I do still use the withy yes I've not found better for pop ups 👌

      I like the multi rig mate but have had the D section slip on big casts. Also I like hooking on a pva bag which would cause it to slip. The doubled up D section offers slightly less movement to the bait as its thicker so the hook ring swivel doesn't slide so readily. Both rigs are great and catch fish but this is fine tuned and when fishing for 1 or two bites a session I don't mind tying new ones 👌

    Have you guys ever thought about the amount of contradiction in carp fishing. Short rigs supple braid stiff d rigs no movement loads if movement high quality baits but then put plastic on our hook links. Palm test it turns it flips oh no this doesn't flip and turn but catches every rig with an explanation and reason for using always totally contradicts the other. 17:32

    • @SimonDewCarpFishing
      @SimonDewCarpFishing  9 місяців тому

      It's because every lake is different and not all carp feed in the same way. Rigs come about because people are trying to overcome a problem or certain situation perhaps after watching a feeding carp in the edge. Certain target fish may feed very slowly for example and a stiff short rig is good in this situation. Over a spread of bait or deep siilt a long rig is good. Solid bags and tight bait or in winter a shorter rig. Each rig has its place and that's what keeps carp fishing challenging and interesting 👍

    • @longjohnsilver9192
      @longjohnsilver9192 8 місяців тому

      Palm test is indeed bs. A hook in a carp's mouth is never moving the same way as dragging it on your palm. Picking it up by the bait in a bucket of water and seeing how the hook flips form all the direction it might get picked up by the fish woud be better, I think

      Everyone is trying to make a name for themselves Scott Lloyd Gareth Farnham etc by claiming to invent rigs that we’re doing the rounds decades ago !! As mentioned he doesn’t claim that in this case

      As already mentioned I've not claimed to have invented anything and even said I'd seen a video on the rig hence why I tried it. If you want to be negative this isn't the channel for you 👍

    .. the only think I liked in this video- ceramic scissors. The rest- just waste of time.

      Have you tried it? Since using this rig I've caught 2 x 50s 5 x 40s and numerous other fish and lost very few calling it a waste of time without trying it is a waste of time in my opinion. This rig is quite possibly the best wafter type presentation you can achieve with today's materials. Also I agree ceramic scissors are the bomb 😜
