- Hey guys! In today's video I'm going to finally test out and review the popular viviva watercolor sheets and the peerless watercolor sheets to see if they are worth their hype! Hey guys! I'm finally back! I missed you! How is everyone doing? Today I'm finally testing out the hyped viviva watercolor sheets and another cool version that has been on the market for over 100 years!! Let me know what you think!

I do have the Viviva set and the colors are brilliantly vibrant, convenient and do stain your fingers no matter how careful you are. Haven't tried the Peerless set. Had no idea they existed and had such a long history!! How on earth did I not know about these?! Thank you for all the info! #makoficationsquad

I personally would support Peerless because they are older and are trying to keep everything as original as possible
I have the peerless set plus the small size bonus pack - 55 colors total. What I love about this brand is that you can make travel sets, and replace everything color as they get used up, each individual sheet is about $2. I cut half inch square pieces, mounted them on a 4.5”x 6” blank watercolor card, swatched each color, put a sheet of acetate in between, have a tiny travel palette. The aqua pens are a perfect addition. I’ve had this travel set for ten years, and still have not used up any of my sheets totally.

I did one of those with a set of 24 watercolos, it took me DAYS to finish, and I had to use a 3A size sheet of paper 😂
This is really good for traveller artists, taking a little cutout of the colours of paper you want to use. I tried to take some dried watercolour cubes with me once but they crumbled away, this seems like a much better idea
I got the Viviva colorsheets for Christmas and and I love them! They're so convenient when I'm just doodling and want to practice. Plus the colors are beautiful! They're so vibrant. I throw mine in my bag and take it to school every day so I can paint when I have time. I wish there was more color choices but it works well for small paintings. I haven't had any problems with it so far and would definitely recommend it for up and go travel artists!

These are so messy! I bet these would stain anything and everything in my handbag. Naaah, I think I'll stick to my mini watercolour tin when travelling tbh xD

Viviva stains your fingers a lot. So yes, I would stick to my travel box of watercolours too.
They're actually not. Viviva, anyways. I have a set and it occasionally stains my hands If I touch the pad directly but I keep it in my bag and often have to leave in a hurry and I've never had anything get stained! The sheets have a separator so they don't contaminate each other either.
Like J Adams said, they don't stain thing when closed in your bag, I never had trouble with mine, only the stained fingers

Can someone please explain me where is the convenience of flipping through pages of wet paint back and forth when one can have a neat set of pans with the pallette on the lid, for those "on the go" situations? I don't see any advantages to a set of watercolour sheets over pans. Uh, they have more colours in slightly less space but then you still need a mixing pallette? And scissors for the second set?
I've seen lots of people using the peerless watercolors for cardmaking and scrapbooking, so I think for every medium there is a perfect way of using it! The viviva colorsheets can be a fun gift for someone who is completely new to watercolors and have never tried it. It could make this person interested in looking into other option and might switch to regular watercolors. I wouldn't personally use it on the go, but I think for some people it can be really fun to use! For me it was too messy and I ran out of paint too quickly 🙈
Ive heard they are used primarily for kids in school (europe) so they only have to carry a small booklet instead of a palette. They were invented 100 years ago, so i imagine many people who needed quick color on the go found them useful. I personally like mixing too much to make one of these work for me.
Also, the peerless sheets are supposed to be cut and dissolved in water, not taken from the book with a wet brush.
@@Makoccino the viviva set only made me sad as a starter because I won't find any watercolor this vibrant and nice to use for a price like this. The best I got until now is the Paul Rubens 24 watercolors set, they're really good, but not like the viviva.
In my experience, paint paper is really popular with urban sketching and travel journaling. They're really handy when you want some quick color without the mess and bulk of a palette.
I tested one of these thingies in the zoo today and the wetness after use wasn't a big problem for me. Since the colors are very pigmented you don't need a lot of water, and I had to sit and wait for the actual painting to dry anyway. It can surely get messy, I don't doubt it. I do struggle with back problems though and I am very grateful for every art supply that is a lightweight alternative! But I don't have a good solution for mixing colors on the go. It's not perfect, but I like it personally.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of dye- based watercolors(mostly because of the lightfastness) and I think the staining actually comes from the dye... I once got some Ecoline ink/watercolor all over my hand, and then had blue hands for the next 2-3 days...
I had the same issue with these paints 😂😂😂 good for traveling but dangerous if you need to look all clean when you go somewhere on your travels 😂
Is it my impression or the dye-based are usually more vibrant?
@@parden3743 if I'm understanding correctly, they're more vibrant initially because they're highly pigmented. But light degrades those pigments more quickly, making them less lightfast

These look really cool! I'm not really worried about the lightfastness because I don't plan on making finished pieces that I'd sell when I'm traveling.
Viviva was one of my options to invest in watercolors for the very first time, but then after watching many videos about watercolors brands I decided I could spent just a few more dollars and get a 24 set of white nights watercolors 😍 I don't regret my decision

I actually bought the viviva sheets...very pretty colors..I haven't done anything big yet but I did do like you did made little color swatches...great way to see how the colors look like 😊 thinking about getting the peerless booklet just to try new painting supplies.

This is still the best review of these materials I've seen. I use both products and everything here is accurate. There's a lot of young artists sharing tutorials on watercolors, and Mako really knows her stuff. I've watched people review these products who didn't even know that there was a difference between dyes and pigments. I just can't but help have more respect for an opinion if it's an informed opinion.
I was gifted a set of the full Viviva line and was pleased to see they also offer a very nice cover case for them. I contacted the company and was able to get one for my gifted set, with my requested engraving.

Just thought to add a comment here about Peerless. I've just received a set of these as part of a subscription box and I love them!
They did come with a note to say that you need to use the correct side of the sheet, it's not necessarily the obvious side. The full tint is actually on the back of the sheets I received.
I'm not sure if the ones you have are the same, but that might help with the scrubbing for colour issue as I had zero problems getting colour off any of the sheets, and they're so super saturated and bright. I love them.

Truthfully, I've never heard of this product before. I found it very interesting. I can't believe that one of those sheets would last as long as a half-pan, though. I don't think I'd be interested in buying them. But they looked intriguing.
I think they are a fun idea but I was kinda sad that some of the paint ran out so quickly! I would rather buy regular watercolors, but I think it could be fun for someone who is completely new to watercolors!
@@Makoccino I think the $20.00 MeiLiang paint set on Amazon in the green tin palette box that says Pretty Excellent on it would be a better buy than these paints. You get 36 half pans and probably a little better lightfastness. But these do look like fun. I really wanted the Peerless paint sheets when I first discovered them. Then I found out they were dye based and changed my mind. Your review was honest, fair and very complete. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Sometimes when you use a roundbrush, I think it would make more sense to use a flat brush, especially when covering large areas.

I think watercolor in tubes is still the best and on the go set. I hate the messy stains on the paper when it dries but still its good but I prefer the ones in the tubes hehe
