In 1999, I had the utmost pleasure of attending a book signing, for Sandman: The Dream Hunters. I had brought along a few of the booklets for Final Fantasy and a VHS sleeve of Vampire Hunter D. I slipped them in between a few things to be signed, by Gaiman and Amano. When Amano saw the sleeve, he had gasped and said that D was his favorite character. To my surprise, he took some extra time to sketch out several images, a tiny one on my case and another, much larger one, inside his art book, that I had purchased there. I had completely forgotten to show him the Final Fantasy booklets.
I hope this isn't a "and then everyone clapped" made up story, cuz that sounds like a legit pretty awesome snippet of history, good fortune, and passionate creators.
What a wonderful experience! I love The Dream Hunters, and Gaiman plus Amano working together was a dream come true. How awesome that you got to meet them both, and that Amano is such a fan of D!
This movie means the world to me, for showing what beautiful proportions and stunning grandeur the world - as well as the human body - could possess. Vampire Hunter D is one of the greatest pieces of art ever.
laziness, postmodernism, capitalism and globalism have turned us against beauty and that grandeur you talk about. everything has to be sleek, minimalist, rootless, cost effective and marketable to a mass audience now. it's why we wont be getting anything on the level of vampire hunter d bloodlust for a very long time to come. not until we find a better way to do things, a way that isn't rooted in making as much money as possible at the expense of everything else.
I still think it's one of the prettiest films I've ever seen. I have three copies of the DVD "just in case", lol. The art book and the art from the books themselves is lovely too.
Agreed: the director and key animator, Kawajiri, based a majority of his character designs and overall “proportions” of said characters on Ancient Greek artwork and sculptures, along with the essence of early 20th Century artists such as Egon Schiele. Also, hyper detailed line-work and multiple layered chromatic cel-shading helped really bring the butter-smooth animation to life in a timeless, yet unprecedentedly distinct way that I’ve always admired from the bottom of my artist’s heart. I’m glad that you appreciate it as much as I do: you have very good taste in feature-length animation, my friend!
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust is my favorite Vampire film of ALL TIMES (ANY MEDIA), visually unrivaled, musically is the sound of heaven, and the story is simple and complex, exactly how I love it to be. And its influence just like the original books inspired the Castlevania games, Kawajiri Film inspired the look and feel of the Netflix Castlevania series, like certain filmmaker will say....."its like Poetry, they rhyme"
It's honestly a crime that Vampire Hunter D hasn't received similar treatment to series' like Ghost in the Shell which have had multiple adaptations to provide different perspectives and starting points for those interested in getting into the series. I love the books, but I'll be the first to admit that they can be dense as hell and difficult to read. Keeping with the GitS comparison, I've heard similar things said about the original manga for that series (don't judge me for not having read it, it's on my list), but watching the movie and anime adaptations can help give a feel for the world and make the manga easier to process. While VHD has had two movies and a short lived manga (which I really loved and was sad to see cancelled), the story has such a rich and fantastic world that it could really benefit from the change in perspective adaptation can give, and I hope we get to see more someday.
I've been saying the same thing about Dominion Tank Police for 25 years. There's multiple GITS, Appleseeds, etc. But you need Tank Police for the last part of the trinity!
It would be nice to see a Tank Police or Appleseed series that wasn't wholly butchered and changed heavily from the source material. GitS is great but it's not nearly Shirow Masamune's greatest work in my opinion.
I'm still smirking, when the scene in the coffin comes as Ds antagonist reads the invitation letter to the castle and he's addressed properly as "Graf Meierling" and I quietly read along in German even though I'm always watching the English Dub. Nice detail they added, that so much time has passed, that none of the humans seem to know his real name and instead he continously gets called Meier Link. ^^
I've grown up playing castlevania games and when I stumbled upon Vampire Hunter D, I instantly fell in love with it. This work of art really deserves a full series of its own. I was very disheartened when i found out how unknown this anime is even among the veteran anime fans. I sure hope this gets a lot of recognition. Another great video, keep up the good work
"Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" has a beautiful gothic aesthetic and such amazingly fluid animation that it's still on the list of my favorite vampire movies. Since "Castlevania" already has a Netflix series, they should really give "Vampire Hunter D" another chance to be revived as a tv series. You did a great job analyzing this!
I feel like VHD was the last of its era. Anime doesn’t feel like this anymore, and I miss the rich hand-drawn animation, brooding narratives, and overall more mature storytelling than what is being produced today. One of my fav anime films!
Yeah the isekai trend is fun and all, but shows like Sword Art Online are narrative meta-ironic disasters. I miss the brutally authentic, arresting vision of things like the original Ghost in the Shell film, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, and Ninja Scroll. But I am a total sucker for feature films over tv shows. The work of Satoshi Kon, Red Line, Princess Mononoke will always be more powerful to me than all but the best long form anime/manga stories. Like Berserk, One Punch Man and Hunter x Hunter that go out of their way to imbue meaning and symbolism richly into the story, not just another villain of the weak and disposable shounen action like so many shows seem to be these days.
This was the firs anime I ever bought, strictly because everyone called me D when I was little and i was into vampires. It was just the right amount of bonkers to hook me into to giving a lot of other things a try that a young me would never have
This.....dude. I do not have the appropriate words to express my gratitude for this. VHD set me aside, when I was young boy in the early 90's, and explained to me how the dark and the terrifying can be beautiful in ways other will never see. The original movie has ever been on my tongue, when someone speaks of media that stuck with me. I am subscribing, and will be vigilant for a time when I can financially support content that I find personally rewarding, like your's.
So glad to hear that youve taken to reading the vampire hunter D books. Bloodlust the novel isnt quite as upbeat as the movie is. In fact it is dark and tragic even for a gothic horror novel. I actually found myself caring about what happened to the villain as well as what happens to D
It's good that you compare Vampire Hunter D with Akira. It is only that D falls into the Horror Genre rather than the more mainstream Post Apocalyptic Genre that Akira has to account for it's smaller exposure. It is just as visually striking but it's more subtle, nuanced storyline gets overshadowed by other great works. Thank you for reminding us of this great work.
I think it has a bit to do with the fact that Akira came 12 years earlier, so people levy even more praise on its technical strength. Which really isn't right. Among animation lovers Vampire Hunter D should be on just as high a pedestal.
It's amazing that such a uniquely themed and highly influential work like Vampire Hunter D has never quite gotten the recognition it truly deserves. The 1985 animated film is what got me into anime back in the 90s. It's a masterpiece.
Having read all of the novels that have been translated into English so far, I am overjoyed to hear this series getting a bit more of the attention that it so richly deserves! Thank you very much for this wonderful review. I would highly suggest investigating the Trinity Blood novels (and to a slightly lesser extent, the anime), drawn by one of Amano's students (Thores) It's a fantastic blend of sci-fi, fantasy, and vampires!
I remember my dad showing me this movie back in 2004 when I was 12 years old and I remember being so horrified and enchanted and wanting more. Even now as an adult, this movie that I've seen countless times is still so good every time I rewatch it with someone watching it for the first time. And like you said, it's interesting that it isn't given the same "love" that something like Akira is given despite both having been a huge cultural impact. I also hadn't realized that there were forty books of this; university starts back up soon and as a literature student, I have a huge list of books I will be reading this semester but you can bet your ass that I will start reading the books at the same time. Another great video as always!
Well, guess I gotta watch Bloodlust again. So happy you finally covered this underappreciated classic of animation. Let's hope Kawajiri can return to do another Vampire Hunter D film in the future!
Both movies were a joy to watch. I was glued to the screen like a leech. It inspired a project I've been working on myself during the quarantine, since I'm currently unemployed and need to process some frustration while stuck at home. This franchise is delicious.
Vampire Hunter D was the first anime I ever saw back in the late 80s. A friend of mine's dad had it and let us watch it and growing up on cartoons like He-Man, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Gobots and the like Vampire Hunter D blew our minds. I didn't think anything could possibly be better in animation in anyway shape or form. Then a few years later I saw Akira and was proven wrong, but this just holds a special place in my heart as the thing that opened the door for me for a whole new level of animation and storytelling.
I've been rereading the manga series, and volume 3 is the story that Bloodlust is based on. It's amazing how different the two mediums are from one another in a lot of aspects, yet still both tell the same exact story perfectly. Yes, there are a LOT of changes in Bloodlust that differ from the manga, yet both versions are as equally compelling as the other. Your video painted the story in a beautiful and unique way, giving Bloodlust and the original anime film the love they deserve.
I fist saw this movie almost 30 years ago when I was about 8 years old. It played on late night TV I had no idea what I was watching but loved it and Japanese animation ever since.
As someone who for a long time drove a truck for a living I was forever checking audible to see if there were audio books for this series. Sadly as far as I know there never has been as the books are actually fairly niche and not actually very well known outside of japan. I do enjoy re-reading them in my medical retirement nowadays though as they are a wonderfully thought out series of books and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for more D.
How come I didn't see a thing about this before? I only heard bout the anime but didnt gave it too much attention til' now.. every scene you showed from the move was too stunning... def checking it out. Thank you as always.
I would literally die. Not sure how those two art styles would meet in the middle since Kawajiri already has a very distinct voice, but tonally and from a cinematography perspective, I would love to see what he would do with that.
Vampire Hunter D was my introduction to anime. Bloodlust is not only an all time favorite, it has been the inspiration to some small arcs in a web novel I've been writing the better part of a decade.
Great job! I just wished they could collaborate on making the novelization into a tv series. The story and art would be awesome. But I'll just enjoy whatever has been put out. Thanks for the contribution
This series deserves more attention. I wish there were more people who talked about the world of this series while lightly detailed nobody really goes into any depth in exploring said details. It's just as interesting as any other niche scifantasy settings. Weird little tidbits like how the nobility shrunk entire stars and placed them in dimensional barriers to give as medals to their bravest warriors or that the sacred ancestor orchestrated the downfall of the noble civilization as they continued to disappoint him with their stagnation and bloodlust. How alien invaders were baffled when they waged war against an enemy that could reconstitute from mere atoms. Just wish people took more notice to the weird and fascinating world of D.
God, YES. The world of VHD has taken root in my imagination for so many years now, I don't think I go a day without thinking of it in some way or another. I actually have a small rp/collaborative writing server now where some friends and I have been sort of "living" on the Frontier for several years. It's become a better home than the real world. ♡ Nice to see someone else who appreciates the extent of the world building in those books, I don't run into many of us out there.
I saw the first Vampire Hunter D in 95 when I was 15 and it blew me away. I had seen some anime before but nothing like the world D inhabited. When Bloodlust came to the States I bought it as soon as it was available, knowing nothing of the story. I wasn't disappointed. I had a couple of my friends who were into anime come over, we had pizza and a few beers and watched one of the most stunning films ever animated. I would love to see Vampire Hunter D get the Castlevania/Deviman Crybaby treatment. A full series that adapts more of the stories from the novels. If a well made D series came to Netflix I would be more than happy to resubscribe to the service.
Why are there not more VHD adaptations…so much content written just waiting to be brought to life. Such a shame the series never materialized. Thanks for the cool review. VHD: B is my favorite movie
We absolutely need more Kawajiri, where the heck did he disappear to? D in Bloodlust was artistically perfect, I love his depiction of D. The whole movie was perfect.
My first memories are of Bloodlust. My dad showed it repeatedly to a... literal baby. And then again to a toddler. D is practically tattooed behind my eyelids. For years I had reccurring dreams of the ring scene. For years I actually didn't know the name of the movie or really what it was. It wasn't until my teens that I figured out what my visions were of. I'm pretty sure as a kid I thought I was just possessed or had a really intense fever dream. I would just see things and have a scene flash in my mind or not understand why something was so familiar. Honestly this video kind of shook me because it overwhelmed me with nostalgia.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is the most beautiful animated film to date in terms of style, color and cinematography. Such a shame that it gets overlooked all too often - hopefully, at some point in time we'll be able to get a full-fledged series with a similar level of dedication and craftsmanship as Bloodlust.
This was magic for me at age 14/15 in the 90s... I had never seen anything like it! It was such a mind-blower it sparked my love for anime and storytelling, I wanted to know more about this insane world we live in. (the 1985 and 2000 just amazing!)
Vampire hunter D bloodlust is my all time favorite movie. It introduced me to anime fun fact the English version of bloodlust was recorded before the Japanese version dialogue in Japanese theaters they released the film in English language
Great Video. Vampire Hunter D is really underappreciated of sorts. I have friends that watch Anime. An have Never heard or seen the Films. I always let the use both Movies. Bloodlust is the One that stays with them after being Watched. Amazing Anime and Skillful Artists are Displayed on this Masterpiece.
I remember reading all these books in high school after i first saw the original movie. One of the best series in the Anime field. The books are detailed and dense with great characterization and simple but deep plots.
An upcoming Anime Series adapting the novels is in production currently. Hopefully it gets released soon so people can witness the beauty of the series.
Holy crap! As I write this comment, this video has more than 2000 likes vs. 7 dislikes. I don't think I've ever seen this ratio on any other channel. And it is not unusual for BG. I think it's well deserved.
Your videos are so reliably good, Joe. Not only have you made thinking about my old favourites again enjoyable and cast light on them at angles I hadn't considered, you're a reliable source of new things to check out too. For instance, if not for you I'd never have picked up Haikyuu! Keep doing what you're doing - I hope one day I get to see a feature-length documentary from you, or something!
Fantastic video. I am a huge fan of D and I think I have every single novel in English and Japanese, incl. the manga. I am obsessed with D and I couldn't have appraised the character or the stories better than what you have done here. Really great job.
12 min essay about the movie, and no spoilers, that's a feat on it's own.
I tip my hat to you, sir.
Spoilers arnt really the point of these films. The clips of the fight scenes are more spoilery for this type of film tbh.
Not really about the movie it’s about Vampire Hunter D as a whole
In 1999, I had the utmost pleasure of attending a book signing, for Sandman: The Dream Hunters. I had brought along a few of the booklets for Final Fantasy and a VHS sleeve of Vampire Hunter D. I slipped them in between a few things to be signed, by Gaiman and Amano.

There are like 30 Vampire Hunter D novels out there tho?
Which Gods or did you mean God's work? Even then which God?
Agreed
There needs to be a animated series based off the novels; similar to Castlevania
I prefer it this way. I hate overhyped and over exposed entertainment, it ends up getting ruined. Look at Star Wars.
Blood Lust’s animation, direction and design is unmatched even today. Why there is only one movie but multiple Twilight films I’ll never truly know.
There is 2 vampire hunter D movies.
Andrew Dinsmoor I meant with this director dude
Have you seen the Highlander anime movie. Same animators, really great story as well.
Aaron Sharp oh, I did, it was ehhh for me. Doesn’t have the same polish as this one.
Quality is hard to come by, is it not?

Vampire Hunter D is a criminally underrated franchise. I do think it deserves considerably more acclaim and widespread familiarity.
D is so great that if he were to have a regular series or more frequent movies, then we’d all die from an overdose of awesomeness.
That last line made me laugh so hard. I wouldn't mind that. 😂

Nice to see someone else who appreciates the extent of the world building in those books, I don't run into many of us out there.
Vampire hunter d has such a place in my heart
I watched Bloodlust because of this video and I just wanted to say thank you for introducing that amazing film to my brain. It’s so goooood

One of my all time favorites. Exceptionally well written. You did great work here man.
Man, D was one of the first animes I watched way back in the day.

I love vampire hunter D watched that since I was a kid
I saw it and said "Yess!" It's my fav and underrated.
Great review. I've long thought Bloodlust was underrated.
Why are there not more VHD adaptations…so much content written just waiting to be brought to life. Such a shame the series never materialized. Thanks for the cool review. VHD: B is my favorite movie
Ah yes Vampire Hunter D video thank you
Outstanding, always loved the Vampire Hunter D movies. Underappreciated they are.
One of my favorite anime movies of all time.
Vampire hunter D bloodlust is a work of art it’s so underrated.
I'm so glad I happened upon your channel. Such excellent insights and presentations. Much to mine and enjoy.
Bravo! Masterful video. I watched Bloodlust during and after watching this video. Thank you for introducing me to the world of Vampire Hunter D.
(the 1985 and 2000 just amazing!)
man every single one of your videos are so well, scripted edited and produced its really amazing
Vampire hunter D is one of my favourite anime movies! Good review! Keep it up :D
Love Vampire Hunter D!
Bloodlust was one of the best anime movies I’ve seen. It deserves to be among one of the classics.
I agree you are doing a service to greater good this is a love letter seriously vamp d deserve needs more series
You have convinced me to watch this anime film, the 2000s version.
The 1985 movie was what got me totally into anime.
Same here. I saw it on Cartoon Network's "Night of the Vampire Robots" pre-Adult Swim experiment in like, 1995, and it changed my life.
@@SuzakuX TBS showed this and Robot carnival during the summer of 1994 which was when I first saw them
My first and most beloved anime of all time.
I still think the first one captured the dread and atmosphere better.
Good one man. I'm gonna go rewatch Bloodlust now.
Amazing video, i was also suprised when i saw the movie that it was not more popular, it's so beautiful and well crafted.
Good to see you still at it sir.
This series keep me in anime and inspired me to be a world builder.
Holy crap! As I write this comment, this video has more than 2000 likes vs. 7 dislikes. I don't think I've ever seen this ratio on any other channel. And it is not unusual for BG. I think it's well deserved.
My goodness. I have to get the blu ray now... This DVD was one of the first DVD i purchased.
Vampire Hunter D was got me into anime back when you had to trade VHS tapes with people...
This is amazing and I love what you did. You did a great job and I am so glad you did this. Now I must reread this
Your videos are so reliably good, Joe.
Once I hit play, I never want your videos to end. that's the good stuff right there
Couldnt finish - had to go rewatch! 😊
Fantastic video. I am a huge fan of D and I think I have every single novel in English and Japanese, incl. the manga. I am obsessed with D and I couldn't have appraised the character or the stories better than what you have done here. Really great job.
