I was also pleasantly surprised by the quality of the anime considering its release date, nice to hear that at some point of time it was widely acknowledged
For a while, this was my favorite anime. The world is so intriguing, the plot was esoteric without being inscrutable, and the action is Bones at its finest.
Hearing Abingdon Boy School again after so many years brings back so many good memories with this anime. I'm so glad to hear someone finally cover it. Hope your channel blows up dawg
Darker than black is such a gem, I had no idea that the same director was leading wolfs rain. This was a well researched and explained video and analysis of the series. I especially like how you explored the flaws in the characters, season 2 hei is a rather unlikeable but somewhat easy to sympathize with knowing his history. His actions, abuse of suo, and alcoholism isn't redeemable but they are sort of understandable viewed through the lens of his worldview.
I could feel my eyes bulging when this vid showed up on the YT homepage in front of me. I have resigned myself to this being forever dead. Thank you for this. Truly.
Great video! You definitely earned a follow!! I haven’t seen darker than black since I would watch it on onDemand (I know I just carbon dated myself lol) but the series always had something that struck me in the same way cowboy bebop did, I was pleasantly surprised to hear you reference it too! This is somehow the first video I’ve seen on darker than black and I just wanted to say you did an amazing job man
12:05 HEY SAID ITTTT!!! Aw man, I rewatched this series and Gunslinger Girls a couple of months ago and they're still peak shows for me. Im forever hurt by the fact whenever I bring this series up to the older anime heads I get confused stares because unlike alot of series from back in the day outside of EXCEPTIONALLY expensive DVD's this is one of those shows that to my knowledge never dripepd onto American tv, not even on random channels that just needed to have something in the time slot (like Desert Punk or Serial Experiment Lain). Season 2....we don't talk about that.
I loved this Anime when it came out and haven't thought about it in years. Such a shame it's so hard to watch these days because your totally right this show was amazing. Thanks for reminding me of it and hopefully it'll be more accessible in the future!
This is an awesome analysis of the show! I wanted to add some of my own ideas because I have thought about this show a lot and I just wanted to share my perspective on why I think they say contractors are logical and cold constantly. I think the reason they do this is because it’s a contraction. I think it’s done this way on purpose. We often learn the stories of these contractors and I feel like they’re anything but cold and logical. I feel as though often the characters have to try and convince themselves they’re logical, but every character has such a deep emotional backstory of something traumatic. Sometimes after you experience something like that you become numb. Hei himself is an emotionally driven character, other characters mention little Easter eggs of him being different, but you can see that they are similar too. I do also think the humans have casted on this idea that they’re soulless monsters. I mean Hei and all the other characters were trained to kill. That is considered soulless by some, but that’s just what they learned as children. What you learn as a child affects you as an adult. The show is a lot more psychological than people give it credit for. It’s also sort of similar to thinking badly of any type of group because you’re afraid of them and you don’t wish to understand them. I think humans, this is in a lot of media, don’t want to understand things that are scary or potentially threatening. I believe if we had people like them that were real, that there would be discrimination against them. Sometimes when people are discriminated against, it’s hard to be given a chance to be anything else but that and that people will try to cast judgement no matter what. I believe that we’re being shown that it’s not true very often in the show to prove those people wrong. I love that they get proven wrong, I find it really satisfying. Anyways that’s what I have to say, I hope that made sense lol if anyone would like me to explain my ideas more I would more more than happy to
17:01 It's psychologically revenant in some way. Contractors have emotions, I imagine the space between their emotions and consciousness is the power they've gained.
Darker than Black has been one of my favorite Anime's since I was a kid, the moment I was watching it I was hooked! The Action the Mystery the Price of Power all of the DNA of Darker than Black is what made me fall in love with it. And when it comes to a source of inspiration being "Roadside Picnic" I now totally see the comparison with the Zone and Hell's Gate. A place where Logic doesn't always work. Now I know we all think Season 2 is worse off, but I can't tell you for how Long I was holding out hope for this Gem to get a Season three. Maybe it's furthering the story or maybe it's more details on the Heaven's gate War.
watched this all when it first came out and connected with the main character a lot at times. pret good stuff. got a bit wild towards the end, but all in all will always be one my favorites.
9:59 Well by the end you have to discover the truth behind the truth you know, similar to how the whole show says contractors are emotionless... Something darker than black would be invisible.

Hell yeah. Great call back to a show I haven't seen in 15 years. Now I want to rewatch it.

I would have written examples, but it would have turned into a giant essay. I have a bunch of them and could literally talk about it forever

what does psychologically revenant mean
@@evilhutdug4665 a ghost that haunts you and reveals your weaknesses and failings to you

I love thoughtful, challenging anime. Not for everyone. That's exactly what it is.
18:55 Serve us or be experimented on.
Add in simple is safe so they need to show they're easy.

Chinese Electric Batman
I'm 23, and though of anime as a kids thing when I was 11 years old, till I saw darker than black in middle school, it is my favorite series.
Great analysis!
My favorite anime, it's so perfectly edgy 2000's without becoming overly cringe
I love everything about this show when I first saw it. I have a feeling that was inspired by roadside picnic AKA stalker.
Opening is goated, sounds like the guy who made soul eaters opening
Lots of audio troubles with this one, but it seems fixed for the most part. Should be fixed for the next one.
Darker than Black is such a cool story. I've watched 100s of animes gotta say Darker than Black is one of the best.
9:59 Well by the end you have to discover the truth behind the truth you know, similar to how the whole show says contractors are emotionless...
Something darker than black would be invisible.
