Being an American it is a shame rally isn’t big here. The death of Ken Block might truly have ended all hopes of rally entering popularity here in the states. He really was a trailblazer into the love of this European sport. I can only dream we will have my home of New England as a country featured into the WRC calendar. Fabulous video btw.
Lucky for you, there has been discussions of helding WRC event in Tennessee. Question is that can the majority of the public and organizers there understand the rallying culture, so that there would be plenty of spectators on the stages and that everything would go smoothly organizing wise. Subaru Motosport USA has build some new rallycars too, but they don't comply within the current WRC regulations, kinda hoping that FIA would do big rule changes to allow them to race as well, would do good for the sport for sure.
Makes literally no sense that Americans (specifically rednecks) don't like ralley. Got the room for it, got the cars for it, tailgate by the track and Whooooo every few minutes find a way to add guns and its as american as apple pie.
Agreed. It's a damn shame. We've got so many great places to do it, and we've got an ample off-roading culture. Feels like this country could and should be a rally powerhouse and we just aren't. I would love to see rally cars hauling ass through Alaska, Colorado, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Washington, West Virginia...throw a dart!
I’ve watched just over half an hour, and let me just say it’s insane this doesn’t have at least 100k views. Fantastic documentary, fantastic channel! I’m so happy I found it! The voiceover is pleasant and high-quality, the clips are well selected, music isn’t loud or intrusive, and the 3d models of the cars look like straight out of my dream indie rally game. Superb video!
Hello everyone- thank you for the continued support on this video! Just wanted to address the comments rightfully pointing out the odd historical innacuracies and mistakes- I made the majority of these videos when I had a much, much smaller channel, when I didn't proofread my scripts as well as I should've. Therefore, a fair few mistakes that I should've caught slipped under the radar. None are at all major and don't disrupt the overall narrative, but they exist nonetheless. Hope you all understand!
Having watched all of these videos as individual videos in the playlist, seeing this as one big over hour long documentary is amazing and badass. Well done man.
I wanted to say I appreciate the effort you have been putting into this. As a beginner audience in this amazing sport, this documentary really helped me get a grip on.
Outstanding content, keep pushing eventually u will see the outcome of your consistency and work. Best of luck mate, greets from 🇵🇹 hopefully gonna watch wrc this year
I’ve been a Motorsport fan all my life, mainly IndyCar, F1, and Sports Cars. I never really followed Rallying closely but I’ve been getting interested in it and the history of it. Thanks for this video.
Great condensed content of the technical aspects of the sport. It took me years to figure out what was wins due to drivers and what was due to manufacturers.
..and now the landscape of the sport will change once again with Rally1 ditching the hybrid system with a slightly smaller aero deficit, while Rally2 can be optioned with a "WRC Kit" to give them bigger wings for aero and less air intake restriction for more power. So effectively we will see two different types of cars going at it at the top class with one type being a purpose built silhouette rally cars and the other being the more traditional rally cars with closer relation to the road cars.
I speak for everyone when I say bring back homologation specials!!! I love rally and rally cars especially when I can actually buy a street version of the cars!! The Celica st205 and Evo 6 are such amazing cars that you can drive and we need to see a return of the "rally cars for the road!" Great video by the way. The future of rally seems uncertain but I'm positive it's heading in the right direction
I have just sat treu to almost 2 hours of rally history and im not the biggest rally fan. And let me tell you i did not regret it. Amazing video loved it.❤ I do like rally but mainly the history of the cars and mainly the ford cars😅
Your power output for the Mini is rather optimistic! The original Mini was only 850cc and produced 33bhp, the Mini 1000 you quoted was introduced in 1967 by which time the Mini's rallying career was virtually over, and that produced just 37bhp. Even the ultimate Cooper S 1275 only produced 70bhp - 100bhp from 1000cc was the stuff of dreams in the 1960s!
After watching all of this I am seriously bummed that I've been an F1 fan all this time. I EVEN HAVE A RACE IN MY COUNTRY GOD DAMNIT! I could have been there for some of this stuff man
I love the format and the work behind this, but there are a couple of inaccuracies, for example Michael Park was not a driver, he was Markko Martin's codriver. Or the team orders in catalunya 1995 where it was said from the start that there would be team orders to maintain position (i think after day 1, so whoever came out leading at the end of the day took the rally) and sainz was in fact against mcrae slowing down and wanted to race. There are probably a couple more mistakes like these, still, great series, really enjoyable.
did you really model all those cars? I tried modeling some yesterday and phowow, I really respect your work. It's hard to see how much effort one put's in their projects but when you have even a slight glimp into it you can really start to understand it. Great video!
Great video bro! I'm brand new to modern rallying and was looking to get a breakdown of his history! Always loved the Lancias as a kid! How's the sport looking in general? Is it as popular as ever or has COVID effected overall interest? I'd love to go to a race one day!
Labais. Man patīk. Līgai cepums, Jānim divi. 😅 Gribu redzēt visus TDR autiņus. Laikam visvairāk interesētu mk2 stāsts. Bet ideja super. Gaidu nākamos video. 👌👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Please do a video on the "evolution of rally pyramid" it's very confusing to get it and it will be entertaining and useful to learn via your UA-cam channel.
I agree with your end note about there needing to be more manufacturers in WRC because it is quite boring seeing the same 3 car companies compete with each other, I want there to be more cars and more drivers competing to create more overall fun, while hatchbacks are probably still going to be king maybe another manufacturer would bring along another innovation and shake things up. Because as of now there has been too many 3 manufacturer WRCs.
It's interesting watching this. These guys have obviously done a lot of research, yet as with any subject in history, there is always a lot of details not recorded for prosperity. How easy must it be to go back 1500 years in time and come to an entirely wrong conclusion
Even though I wasn't even alive for that particular era of rally, the Lancia Stratos (particularly the red and green on white livery with gold wheels) will forever be a rally icon in my mind not because of it's numerous firsts and victories, but because it graced the cover of Sega Rally. Those games were my initial introduction to the sport and the beginning of my fascination with all things motorized. Gran Turismo may get all the credit, but Sega Rally and later Rallisport Challenge are what made me a gearhead.
It's worth mentioning, the 2017 Fiesta did had a good start, but the 2011 car wasn't quite the dud it's portrayed as here. The 2011 Fiesta RS WRC literally swept the podium at it's first ever event and had 19 podiums that year. It's biggest issue was the 2 guys named Sebastien were in a Citroen.
I'd like to congratulate you for the well put retrospective of the evolution of rallying as a sport. And here we are in 2024 where the WRC is at a crossroad with the Rally1 regulations, though looking way more radical even by Group B standarts with all the bells and whistles, failed to attract new manufacturers and they've arrived way too late to the hybrid party. And now, the WRC had decided to end the hybrid experiment for 2025 and new generation of Rally1 cars will be on the horizon by 2026 allowing for more broader range of sizes and shapes. But as a byproduct they also had to shoehorn the Rally2-spec cars into this Frankenstein wannabe Rally1 specification (in a way echoing the RRC experiment). IMO what the FIA should've done was to allow R5/Rally2 cars to have a mandatory WRC kit (or allow independent contractors do it) way back when this category was conceived. If Skoda or Peugeot didn't want to compete in the top class - fine, but they should've allowed privateers to use a WRC bodykit for their R5 cars if they wanted to enter the top class
Warning, inaccurate information! I intended to watch the whole 2 hour video but changed my mind after a mere 2 minutes from the beginning 2:00. There it said Paris-Bordeaux return race was 732 miles long (that is 366 miles one way), then Paris-Madrid race, more or less the same almost straight line route in the same direction, crossing the border through the Pyrenees, was 340 miles long! Does that make sense?! Quickest time 5:15:00 between the two capitals? Do you know it takes the record holding TGV train 2:04:00 to go from Paris to Bordeaux? While I appreciate the effort, I don't need someone with dysmetria to tell me about car race. I hope that's the only misinformation in this video, but I am not going to find out myself. I have better ways to spend 2 hours of my time. Leave your comments if you found more mistakes.
amazıng documentary ın the rally hıstory order. thanks for your efforts and 3d rally car models looked very charmıng. as 85 born wrc ı started follow up sınce 1998 season wıth colın mcrea 1 same year vıdeo game untıl 2008 that global economıc crısıs had fınısched wrc unoffıcıally cause sınce that tıme there ıs no true competıtıon.
The models that remain of the cars that the manufacturers had to make to meet the 200 Group B regulations sell for crazy amounts. Due to most of them being used by the teams for parts, replacements etc. There's some examples out there though. If only I could win the National Lottery........
I remember the Loeb decade as being boring. He came close to 10. He might have ruined the wrc with his 10th title. But I am gonna admit he was too good. The way he drove during his citroen years. However the WRC will always have the pop-pop & bang-bang years that beats the silence of the lambs electric. Because those cars had character...
4th double AD in 11minutes.. i cant continue this for 2h... i dont know what content is hidden behind this adwall but it cant be important enough for me to keep caring... sry mate but this is ruining it for me
This documentary is fantastic! Gotta say though, I think Colin Mcrae was a bit overrated. Only one title, people just were in awe of his balls to the wall rabid dog style of driving that clearly wasn't that clever. That same foolishness eventually took the life of 4 people.
What happened in Sintra was not the fault of the car or the driver. It's an eternal problem in Rally that will only be fixed if drivers stop caring about the lives of people who are mere wastes of organic matter. STOP BEING ON THE TRACK.
So... what was the best year of the World Rally Championship?
1999
2002
1998 would be up there
2001 and 2003
2020, 1995, 2000 and 2008

Especially a shame considering you have some beautiful roads, and could probably get away without having to repeat stages so often
Makes literally no sense that Americans (specifically rednecks) don't like ralley. Got the room for it, got the cars for it, tailgate by the track and Whooooo every few minutes find a way to add guns and its as american as apple pie.

@@HonkyKong258i’ll toss vermont on that list too considering the subaru team is based here

I totally agree. This is a masterpiece and a great insight into the history of Rallying.
At a 114k views at the time of this comment!!
This video deserves 1,000,000+ views. Truly great stuff. I concluded the 2 hour watch today, and I enjoyed the entire watch. Thank you very much!
Glad you enjoyed! :)

You forgot about Rally Poland first held in 1921. If I'm not wrong it's the second oldest rally after Monte.
Not a oroblem, great and very interesting video, being 64 remember most of the years
This video was my perfect introduction to rally racing 🔥🔥🔥
Rally will forever be my favorite motorsport of all time, every single part of its history fascinates me
I am more of an F1 fan, but I know the mighty 80ies cars from my youth (and from various games) - what an excellent video, great work!!!
Good job with the whole series. Was an interesting one to watch. Thank you for that and keep up the good work!
Having watched all of these videos as individual videos in the playlist, seeing this as one big over hour long documentary is amazing and badass. Well done man.
Thank you so much!
Well done dude. I recently got interested in rally racing and this was a great way to get an idea of the context behind where it’s at now
By far the best documentary on rally sport
fantastic. many thanks for the great doc. michelle mouton and her co-driver are unsung heros of the sport.
This series is incredible. Thank you for all your research. ❤
A marathon watch but worth every minute. Brilliant job 👍

Many thanks for this, well good from start to finish, Saved to favorites, i"ll watch again soon...forsure.
Fantastic documentary. Absolutely awesome.
Thank you so much!
Excellent video! Thank you for all the information!
Thanks for narrating my journey down the rabbit hole. It was especially cool to find out where Wheeljack's vehicle mode came from.

This is a classy and timeless film you made. Nice work indeed…Tom

Not sure if anyone’s mentioned it, but British night road rallying is still very much alive and well!

It definitely took a hit in 2020, but I'd say the sport recovered pretty quickly and is certainly at a pre-covid level nowadays!

Lancia never got overtaken. They left after 1992 and the cars were run by Jolly Club in 1993
Hmm, first ford Escort rally car was an RS 1600 was it?.....Escort TC??
Tbh I would love to have a rally game with the same artstyle that your 3d models have

Bring back the old rally car
In which universe did mini's 1000cc engine make only 100bhp?
so, the WRC has gotten rid of Hybrid.
and honestly im a big fan!
bring back the WRC + catagory!

Not only is saab a car manufacturer, but it is also a plane manufacturer.

But Rally1 cars still pop and bang, honestly rally is still amazing, the only thing it lacks is manufacturers.
There's a comfort and elegance rally? Shoot, someone call james may, i found him a motorsport
Dumb American here, can you believe I’m in my 40’s and never heard of this. We’re complete isolationist 🤦♂️
