Avi Kaplan | Solo Career - Vocal Range

- “In 2017, Avi stepped away from creating after years of rushing from stadium to stadium at a frenzied pace-an experience he calls “beautiful,” but one that also left him physically and artistically depleted. Since returning to music on his own terms, the songs have poured out of him, ready for foot-stomping music halls and serious listening rooms alike. He's also liberated his vocals, once known as the perfect power-bass, to reveal a nuanced voice, rich, tender and abounding. Reveling in the simplicity, “I get on my porch with my guitar, look at my trees, and write a song,” he says. He has rediscovered his own musical roots and delved deeper into the folk he’s always loved-exploring a range of sounds from soul to bluegrass-he has reconnected with himself and found yet another way to connect beautifully with others.”
A Vocal Range of Avriel Kaplan’s work throughout the time since he’s departed from Pentatonix. All clips in this video are from after when he left in mid 2017 (hopefully).
Questionable notes:
Get down G#1: too brief to be counted. Not sure it reaches G# either. Maybe.
Full Moon G1: most likely synth or something other than Avi’s voice. Not evidence for its existence. Discussion here: therangeplanet...
Inevitably there will be mistakes somewhere in here. Apologies. Please comment any you find. This video was surprisingly hard to research and find notes for.
I don’t own any of the music, videos or pictures. Sue me.
(Pls don’t this time)
Big video coming next. Will take a while. Lots of low notes to come :)
Just realised I missed out the entire Eb2 section. I’m a mong
Matthew Dockray damn
Bro , please check out the oktavism interviews on Alexander mayang's channel if you haven't already. Its F**** awesome!!!!
Finally an accurate vocal range..btw 10:43 one of the best B1's I've have ever heard
One of the best ever live tbh
Yes and it was even off mic!
Change in the rise G4 sounds so dope!
What I love about his solo career is that while he uses his full range he doesn't rely on it as a gimmick. More often than not, he uses the sweet spot in the middle of his range and just makes good music.
A truly remarkable voice and talent!! Love love his NEW ALBUM!!!💚🌻💚🌻💚🌻
10:56 Oh wow, I didn’t know that existed, ooff. It seemed so easy and effortless.
hey
Bro Joe Bass Well Hello
I was pleasantly surprised to see/hear you include a couple of clips from my own video taken at Avi's Dallas show last August. And you pulled my favorite clip from the Houston show - his riffing toward the end of "Get Down". He really let loose on that, as it was the last show of that tour and the mood just hit him. (That show was audio only, as the venue strongly disallowed video.) Good compilation, Matthew!
Haha yes thank you, your recordings were great. House of the rising sun was epic and the end of get down was incredible, wish it was studio recorded like that. Thanks for watching
@@matthewdockray9745 I liked that recording of "House" in Dallas because it really allowed you to hear Daniel's keys so well, and he was on fire in Dallas and Houston. I talked to him about it after the Houston show. I also recorded the entirety of the San Francisco show in July, and the "House' clip from that is good for the audience singing along really well, even with harmonies. And that show's "When I Die" (which he will be studio recording soon).
@@charlottevan_8 oh nice, thanks for the info. Did he mention any plans to record nature girl? it's my favourite and I'm dying to hear a studio version
If you haven't already, have a listen to the San Francisco "Get Down". What I like about this one is that you can hear it better when, right after the first chorus, he does those super low notes (you'd be able to specifically identify them) while Daniel is sampling it all on his keyboard set-up, in order to both loop it and to play the notes as back-up singing during the song. That's what I talked with Daniel about in Houston, and he was surprised I knew what it was that he'd done. I explained to him that my late husband had been a sound/recording engineer, among other music business jobs, and so I'd learned a lot about that sort of thing through osmosis and also watching it done live in concert. Heres the SF link: ua-cam.com/video/KR9U-f-fmZs/v-deo.html
Beautiful video. Was the B1 in the second fields in pier off mic?
I honestly don’t know. Based off the audio, I would assume there was a microphone or a phone or something recording the audio about 3-4 feet away. Impressive either way
@@matthewdockray9745 yeah
Yes it is
His voice improved since he leavt the group.
AVIII IS 🔥 PURE TALENT
This was great, Thank You! I'm missing Avi so much, so this was timely too!
Glad you enjoyed :) thanks for watching
Great work bro. I never noticed the Bb1 in aberdeen.
There was another at the end of Aberdeen but I thought it was a B1 idk tho I don’t have the best pitch
@@liambreen7892 do you have the link? Or it is in the same live, at the end of Aberdeen?
Ale Bormio it’s at the end, on the ‘home’ (I’ve a feeling he slide up a bit but I’m fairly sure there’s a Bb there). And yeah it’s in all of the times he’s done Aberdeen live on IG, there’s plenty of videos on UA-cam of his recent live-streams you just have to find one where he did Aberdeen. Shouldn’t be too hard as he does it often.
@Liam Breen yeah I probably had noticed that too
dear lord the man has a 5 octave range?! Blessed by the gods
Just under 4 octaves actually. E1-E5 would make it 4 octaves but he’s a semitone short
Matthew Dockray aaaaaah gotcha
All the basses have range
Matthew Dockray that’s just his solo range though, he’s hit lower before hasn’t he? Unless you’re not counting growl/fry
@@josedejesuscorona6480 his lowest and highest countable notes are E1 and Eb5 regardless of his past career with PTX, unless you're willing to count the rose gold fried D1 which personally I wouldn't
There's a clip that somebody posted of Avi laying down a track that almost sounded like a foghorn. I've been looking for it for you. I think it was in Trent Dabbs studio, or maybe Ruslan Ordnolovs studio. Have you seen it? It was posted early last year.
Sorry I have no idea what this is. Any other information?
@@matthewdockray9745 I believe it was on Instagram. I know I had it on my clipboard at one point. He is just standing at a huge capture mic singing these ferociously low vocals. Im still trying to locate it.
It was about the same time Johnny Black leaked that gorgeous IG clip of Avi doing a line from Otherside in his studio.
alma petry This: ua-cam.com/video/e7l2s7PbJi8/v-deo.html might be what your looking for at around 0:50
Any links to that otherside clip your talking about?
Liam Breen yeah 0:50 is nice. Hard to say where that low note bottoms out but somewhere around a B1 I think.
I don’t know what song this is, but it’s an unreleased clip from Avi instagram.com/p/ByY4rj0hfgH/?igshid=1wsycl9d6gafu though this might be the clip alma was referring to instagram.com/p/BoNIzBFBpwS/?igshid=1b6wpcv5esn3e
@@liambreen7892 heres the clip from Johnny Blacks studio instagram.com/p/BoNIzBFBpwS/?igshid=ubbtt2c6mtd9 This is about the time period the (foghorn😂) clip I'm referring to came out. Sadly none of the ones suggested here are the one I'm looking for.
I saw it on IG somewhere and then when Avi posted his first tour info on Bands in Town that clip came up on the sample. It was replaced pretty quickly when his music started coming out.
This has driven me NUTS 😜 hope someone somewhere knows where it is.
He is singing long stretches of low notes, not a song.
omgg thanks for making this, this was spot on! one thing i will ask though: i think he may or may not have a C#1 in Get Down. either at the second verse or the second chorus is where it comes in. there are some low rumbles with audible air, so what do you think?
Can you give me a time stamp for this?
Matthew Dockray yess give me a sec lol
ok so if you go on the audio and skip to 1:26 you’ll hear the rumble along with the air
Its Ethannn all I’m hearing are the C#2 “hmms” in the background that slide to roughly G#1. If there’s anything lower it’ll be synth or something not produced by avi
Matthew Dockray hm......i’ll see again but i definitely hear growls
Its Ethannn if there’s a C#1 at all it won’t be from Avi
great video 👍
yo great work Matthew ! I just wanted to know what's the song at 4:06 ?
Get down
Wow
Thank you!
Sweet video. Never seen 10:43 before, pretty cool :)
this was the link to the original video ua-cam.com/video/WFo1UkBdLGg/v-deo.html however it has now been deleted :/ luckily someone uploaded a compilation of Avi livestreams and included the B1 in it here ua-cam.com/video/e7l2s7PbJi8/v-deo.html
What about the growl C1 in change on the rise?
Doesn’t exist
@@matthewdockray9745 oh so avi faked it? If not why is there like a c1 in the song?
@@Gavimaster 1) I’m not entirely sure the C1 even exists, 2) if it does, it’s produced by a synth
It’s not exactly faked, he doesn’t perform acapella anymore so it’s not exactly like every song of his is meant to be organically produced from a human voice
@@matthewdockray9745 yeah i think its a synth
There’s a video by Pamela Bravo ( ua-cam.com/video/EOxBwUMCpZI/v-deo.html ) that goes through basically the same stuff as this video, just studio only. In it she was able to isolate the G4 in Chains and it is in fact chest and it’s beautiful to hear it isolated. She also isolated a Bb1 in It knows me. I think the Bb1 in Full moon (around 3:40 on the ‘why’) would’ve been good to include. I also never noticed the C#2 at the start of It Knows me, but now I can’t not hear it.
Yeah, I’ve watched her video, however I was unable to isolate the notes myself, so I kept the full versions in. I still think the G4 is falsetto, or failing that, I think it’s not unreasonable that they just raised his chest line up a 3rd artificially to give it that fuller sound, but he might’ve done it in chest, I’m not sure if he could sustain it that long though. The Bb1 in it knows me I found but I wasn’t sure if it was legitimate or not and I forgot about her video (I’m stupid). I thought the 3:40 note in full moon was an A1 but I’m probably mistaken. Thanks for the feedback
Matthew Dockray it might be a A idk I’m not the best with pitch and it’s a bit brief to compare it with a piano (i find). I think the G4 is legit as if it was falsetto there’d be some vibrato but I didn’t here any. That’s just my reasoning, great vid
I'm getting some José Gonzales vibes
What’s the song at 5:40 ? 💝 Thanks
Full moon
61st
11:29 doesn't he slide from A1 to something lower?
No. Growl E1 after
Matthew Dockray ok you’re right
what is the 8:13 song?
Get down
2:18 and 0:53what songs are these😂
House of the rising sun
When I die
Both are unreleased
muffin song
i think i turned gay for Avi
Understandable
Third
Haha G1 lowest cheat note, think he has a bit more in the bag
Nah I don’t think so, he seems to bottom out around A1/G#1 most of the time. I’m not even sure this G1 is legit
Matthew Dockray oh, well we know he can from pentatonix
_Generation_ Youth_X he never went lower than G#1 in a ptx song modally
Matthew Dockray wow, just a really rich note then, but G1 is a bass note these other basses are super basses, I can’t sing high like them but can sing low so that’s why they are put as bass or even bass baritones, so I’m either a bass or an oktavist. But G1 is a notable good note, any lower and many people might not hear the difference, or it might sound lower but not gruff.
First
Avi needs to stop growing his beard lol
