Does anyone else notice that Ace is giving Bob the finger?
Mike, you asked some great questions. This was fantastic. Thank you for posting!!
Man, imagine what psycho circus would have been like with Bob behind the board.
Even worse. It could’ve been better with Rubin or Mutt Lang.
In the picture it looks like Ace is flipping the bird at Ezrin.
I got that too.
He is. Ace and Peter were intimidated by Ezrin.
man alive is this dynamite!! The best Ezrin interview ever! Maybe even the finest hour of rich deep KISStory available online?!
Bob Ezrin interview starts @41:45. Damn I wish they would have done another record with Bob.
NO!!!!!! Are you crazy? He made 3 of their worst albums!
I Always LOVE Michael’s “Shooting fish in a bucket baiting” right out of the gate. 😂 Great Episode.
Thanks for the interview and greetings from Finland! 🤘 It was really interesting to hear Ezrin’s voice for the first time and there was a lot of cool stuff mentioned that I hadn’t heard before. I think Ezrin mixed King Of The Night Time World 7/8 part to Flaming Youth 😉
Yep. There is no 7/8 part in King.
I never made it to the interview, I’ll have to try again sometime. For some reason they’re talking about an album that is almost 50 years old and saying it doesn’t sound good? It was 1973!
Always sounds great to me. 🤘🏻🇺🇸🎸
Has ANYONE but me noticed that Ace is extending his middle finger toward Ezrin in this photograph?
Ace appears to be flippin' the bird to Bob in that pic! lol
LOOK CLOSE AT THE PICTURE ACE IS GIVING EZERIN THE FINGER LOL
I’m back! I’m glad I kept listening, I think there may be just five or 10 minutes left. Really cool listening to Bob. Being so young in the 70s, my KISS world started when my older brother give me Love Gun (along with Van Halen I, and Ted Nugent-double live Gonzo) probably around 80 or 81.
For a few years all the kiss I knew or was aware of was love gun, destroyer, anddynasty. I remember seeing cool pictures from dress to kill in magazines, the guys in suits, but I hadn’t put it all together yet. Then I vaguely remember the solar records coming out, but I never had any of those.
Around that same time I saw a live concert of KISS on HBO. So that live set, which is almost similar to what they still play, would become pretty much the all the songs I heard, so I kind of lumped them all together. I didn’t even know that the first album had all those great hits, Strutter, Black diamond, etc.
I don’t remember any debates about destroyer, I just heard a little bit about dynasty and all that disco mess, ha ha. But kiss could do no wrong. And I really never thought about who the producers even were until I was much older.
Then around middle school or high school, lick it Up came out, animalize. I think I got those albums, but that’s the last new stuff I heard from kiss. But I did catch the psycho Circus concert at Dodger Stadium, must have been around 1996. Then I saw them a few years later at Irvine Meadows, 1998.
first time I ever saw them in ‘96, I think was the original lineup. I can’t even remember who was behind the drum kit. I was done gigging pretty much by that time, and was into another career. So, it’s hard to believe, but I don’t even remember if it was really ace up there. I need to figure out someday. Could’ve been Tommy. Same with Irvine Meadows, ‘98. I ditched my friends and snuck backstage real quick. You know, when the lights come up, no time to waste. Just started rolling up cables, helping out. I fit right in. Then I worked my way to this little tented area and got to hang out with Gene and Paul and a group of their friends and family, I know I didn’t see Peter or ace back there at that time. Then after while I just said bye to everyone and left. A lot of people didn’t know each other, so no one even ever questioned me, just included me in all the stories while we were eating standing around eating the buffet. Pretty gnarly!!!
I liked all the early stuff. And all I really listen to at home is my record collection, from 1976 to maybe 1988, ha ha. 🤘🏻🇺🇸🎸
This episode is very rich in information. Thanks🌹Even as a "Beth" hater I'm horrified to hear, that ppl threatened Bob's life, when they heard that song!
His vision to make KISS emotional,
"girl friendly" was great. And guaranteed their longevity. For songs like
"Detroit Rock City", "God Of Thunder", "Do You Love Me" etc. Bob Ezrin became KISS for me.
He is right: "Detroit Rock City" is quintessential. "Rock SENSIBILITY"
he said. Paul and Bob created a very intelligent song.
I'm glad that Paul didn't get down on his knees in "Do You Love Me?"
as Bob wanted. Too much emotion and melodrama.
Paul performs naturally, he's himself and simply irresistible. Here I noticed that Bob was sometimes overambitious? But he knows. The real hit on Destroyer are in some way Bob Ezrin's children. Their beautiful innocent voices almost overshadow the DEMON. Genius. I love Bob's kids. The "virgin souls" Surprisingly it was Bob Ezrin who taught Paul to put more sex into the show? And class!
Both did a great job. Thank you Bob Ezrin💋
Great interview
There’s a bit of an unfair comparison when discussing the debut records of these iconic bands of the 70’s. Jimmy Page, who produced the first Zep album (and all of them eventually) was already a studio veteran and understood how to get exactly what he wanted to hear before they recorded it. Sabbath got lucky. An even better example was Boston, who made a perfectly crafted first record, because Tom Scholtz’s engineering background and brought his technical expertise to the production. The examples used in this analysis all have one thing in common, and that’s the level of talent and experience of the individual(s) overseeing the sessions directly reflected the results they received.
Other than revenge the ezrin albums are not my favorite. I prefer rock and roll over and love gun to destroyer. However that being said it is a fantastic interview and very insightful. Even though I hate half of destroyer I absolutely love the other half. Anything that fills in any gaps makes me happy. Thank you for posting this!
Agree
Agreed. Destroyer is as much plain crapola as it is masterpiece. I never have to hear Beth, Sweet Pain, Great Expectations, or Do You Love Me ever again.
Destroyer was one of those albums in the 70's where you'd record the good songs on cassette and retire the LP.
The album that came out after Pink Floyd "The Wall" (produced by Bob Ezrin) was 1983's "The Final Cut" (which was not produced by Ezrin). I'm a fan of both records. I think the 1982 film (The Wall with Bob Geldof) would have benefitted greatly if Mr. Ezrin had been involved.
I have always wanted to meet Ezrin - I hope he does a convention one of these days. I've got so much I want him to sign too...KISS/Alice/Pink Floyd. Ezin is KISS' George Martin!
Bob Ezrin was Alice Cooper’s George Martin before Kiss
Eddie Kramer helmed the best KISS album's.
Fall of 73 I was 9 and just started guitar and never knew who kiss was till 3 years later
Great interview, although Bob is describing Flaming Youth instead of King Of The Nightime World 😂
With the 7/8 section? Yeah, that initially faked me out, too.
Any one notice Ace is flipping the bird to Ezrin in the thumbnail pic.?
Just noticed that myself!
ACK!💙🖕🎩
Instead of rerecord, they could remix the first album. They could probably recut the guitars, Bass, and fix up the drums while keeping the original vocal takes and have a killer album. I know most fans hate that but I think it would be killer
I want to be a guest on here. A KISS scholar I am. And very production and inside info oriented.
Alice Cooper and Kiss works are awesome.
Saw Alice / Ace at the Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort. Great bands they have. RnR!
NO! Re-records...tweak the tapes and mixes of the first 3 LPs and Unmasked. Hopefully, more was captured on the tapes than what we hear.
1:26.00 he mad a mistake he is actually talking about Flaming youth
The Kiss tour of Australia has now been put back to September because of WA not opening its border. So instead of just leaving WA out, they (Kiss) had to reschedule again.
My Bob Ezrin top 10 - #1 Lou Reed "Berlin". #2 Pink Floyd "The Wall" #3. Alice Cooper "Killers". #4 KISS "Destroyer". #5 Peter Gabriel's first solo album #6 Alice Cooper "Welcome To My Nightmare". #7 KISS "Revenge". #8 Kansas - In The Spirit of Things. #9 - Pink Floyd "The Division Bell". #10 Flo and Eddie.
On the topic of re-recording the first album, I wonder how it would be if they just "re-amp' the guitar tracks into modern amps and re mic it that way?
If the original tracks were direct it might work
A good thought but at this point I say just enjoy Alive. Even the tempos were lethargic on the first album.
But the drums rattle so there’s drum replacement. Maybe keep the vocal.
Which song was the monsters sound in?
God of Thunder
Thumbs up from me!! AEROSMITH ALERT in the 8th minute!! 'In the 8th minute, people!!' AEROSMITH ARMY REJOICE!! You don't have to sit through 20 minutes of Ross getting cut off at the knees, that his 'Magic' book, hasn't been released. 20 minutes of Izzy's Gourmet Pasta from 7/11. 20 minutes of Ralph inappropriately, hitting on 'The Weather Girl'. 20 minutes of the dilemma, that Cheap Trick isn't a stadium band. 20 minutes of, if 'It's My Life' was on Creatures, was the first single and video, it would have saved the makeup. 'Would you look at the time?' AEROSMITH ARMY, this is your moment. Forget the KISS Army, you won!! Blue Kool-Aid Drinker. Peace out from the Southern Tip of Vancouver Island, B.C. Canada.
1:24:58 Michael asks about KOTNTW, but Ezrin's answer is about 'Flaming Youth'.. ps I always assumed the outro represented the dead kid going to a Kiss Concert in the afterlife.
I agree with Mark, In Your Face and It's My Life should have been on Psycho Circus. My fan edit of Psycho Circus includes them and also Sweet And Dirty Love.
It was only a matter of time that the south american leg had to be moved again, down here the covid situation is very complicated due to lack of vaccines in certain countries, at this pace the final show could be on 2025 if not later
those where the days !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I honestly don’t care what any of the say I’ll put the Elder up against ANY KISS album track by track
I like BOB EZRIN already because of Alice Cooper and the Wall pink floyd,i think if they re record first album i buy it ,i like strutter 78 the guitar solo screams of the double platinum man! It must be a cool thing for bands to do an album again i hope they do Hotter than hell again man but with Peter and Ace
If you’re vaccinated, you can easily request a QR code. It should have come within an email already. Mine popped up on my phone immediately!
Yup handy for Meet & Greets.
wow a 41 minute intro before the actual Video starts.
Yep. We aren’t just a interview show. We are commentary.
Well, Bob screwed up. The song with 7 is Flaming Youth during the guitar solo.
What could’ve Ezrin done with/to Rush?
Taylor Swift is doing this right now - recording and rereleasing her old LPs and they aren’t as good as the originals. You might not like that example but it holds up. The youthful vigor is more important than the technical or financial tools available at the time. Chicago re-recorded Chicago 2 and it doesn’t work as well as the original.
Bruce re-recorded "Prowler" and "Charlotte The Harlott" in 88. And it was terrible. I know I am in the minority when I say with Di'Anno they would have been as huge if he stayed. They were creating such a buzz with Paul. It's not like Bruce made them huge. Bruce walked into a band on the rise. And those first two albums was by far the best albums they have ever done. imo. They were hungrier and had a fire that was never matched after Paul left. Sounds like a different band. And as far as KISS ALIVE! Peter Criss was all live. That's how amazing he was back then.
To this day I find it very hard to understand that Bob Ezrin used another drummer for “I”. I don’t see anything on that song that couldn’t by played by The Fox without problem.
It had nothing to do with the "mechanics" of Eric's playing but rather "the feel" What you hear on FRIDAYS (the live version) is Eric replicating what Alan played in the studio. You & I have never heard what Ezrin heard when first trying to complete the original track. Based on Bob's track record and how the drum part was finally recorded I'm betting Ezrin made the right decision. (Mark)
Yup. Comparisons are odious but just like George Martin with Ringo on Love Me Do.
He used Alan because he could double track the drums perfectly
Somehow they got distortion on Strutter
Statistics never lie...statistically speaking.
I love the debut for what it is and always will. I'm so used to the production since I first listened to it and love the production sounding more like a 60s recording by Wise and Kerner. Sounds like early Beatles albums with a better drum and guitar mix. I'd take this production over anything Kiss did up until Dynasty. What an incredible throwback interview show with Ezrin.Rock on brothas
The debut Kiss album is a bit clinical sounding and I think that was the complaint I’ve heard Paul Stanley make about it, but as far as I’m concerned, the second album sounds far worse and they didn’t manage to even get close to the sonic results they were looking for until 1982’s Creatures Of The Night.
@@connshawnery6489 yep when Kiss turned into a heavy metal band. Creatures is an amazing album.
Is This A KISS Show Or A Maiden Show Don't wanna Hear About Maiden!
The first 2 maidens are perfect
When Revenge came out we were all listening to Pantera, White Zombie and NIN. And there was Korn, Rage and SOUNDGARDEN on the way. KISS was done. Carnival of Souls was better than Revenge.
COS isn’t even a KISS album.
51:30 now they’ve talked themselves outta their natural response to it smh
The comments regarding the debut albums by most artists are quite valid but when you look at Led Zeppelin remember that Page had been a studio musician & spent heaps of time learning how to use equipment & get various sounds in the studio. He also had Jones who had similar studio experience & was also an arranger/producer. So with all that taken into account, Led Zeppelin could use all that talent & experience & use it in a phenomenal way. Like The Beatles with George Martin they had something other artists could only dream about as recording artists.
also page had generations of old blues artists to steal from and not orginally credit them
Led Zep I sounds great still on a AAD mastered CD ! His Studio Experience Shines!
Had to fast forward thru the Covid talk. Yikes
Wow that has to really suck for you.
the pre interview discussion about the virus and it's effect on concerts was interesting. Garth Brooks just did the right thing by cancelling those upcoming stadium shows. concerts are super spreader events and should be banned for now. A concert is probably the most dangerous setting for spread of the pandemic, next to cruise ships. Promoters and bands seem to care more about selling tickets and making money than they do about stopping the pandemic.
Stick to KISS, lads- The New York Dolls debut is perfect. Listen to Shadow Morton's sad & lackluster production on Too Much Too Soon for a comparison. Rundgren captured the Dolls' live sound & made the guitars absolutely roar - Johnny's anyway & w/ Syl's Keef's penchant for suspended chords. The drums sounded great- rich & resonant- like a real drum set in a real room & you can hear Davis Jo's vocal cords begin to bleed- when bleeding vocal cords were called for. Tommy- for shame! Ha! Anyway- I love when KISS & the Dolls are talked about because, for me anyway, KISS was at it's best when they were looking at & hearing the Dolls as NYC dirty & sleazy RocknRoll pioneers & inspirations. Thanks Dudes!
Great interview. Wish Kramer as a Producer ( The Person who makes the Band sound great ) produced KIZZ I. It's time for KIZZ ][ too.
Timeline and great expectations is everything, I was the Teen with the KIZZ Army Folder containing the Music From The Elder scoop and couldn't wait for the movie ( still am ). I liked it and thought of it as a side project ( not KIZZ ) that the band was doing for a Movie. Just like the Solo LPs are not KIZZ as the members did not play on each other's LPs. Destroyer I liked but probably wouldn't have if I was a 1975 Fan as it was a big change for the Thunder Rockers and their Kissettes. It still sounds great with Ez doing the dishes and talking away on the cassette version in a 1976 PANASONIC RQ-2104 Slim Line Portable Cassette Tape Player/Recorder.
The first KISS record sounds awesome. I don’t understand why people want it to “rock harder” with more “crunch”. It sounds great as is. The record that needs a remix is “hotter than hell”. That record sounds terrible. lol
