  • Episode 435, June 22, 2021. John Jeffrey returns this week with a 20 year old interview he conducted with Sean Delaney. This interview has never been heard before. We do a roundtable discussion on Sean and his interview... including his claim that the back cover of KISS Alive! was not a KISS concert.
This is a fascinating look into KISStory with Sean Delaney, someone who is without question critical to the development and success of KISS.

Mark - not sure how involved Sean was in 1979 - like Michael was pointing out 1976 was a watershed year where glickman marks were brought in - in a big way and the old road crew was let go and the band was encouraged to stop being “ friends “ with the new crew in the same way as they had bonded in the past. So the story about the band having inflated egos by 1976 could be true.
I am big supporter of Sean Delaney - the co writes the input in the characters the stage show ...etc. Gene solo record is a personal favorite and as far as I’m concerned Sean played an enormous part in that. Listen to Seans solo album “ highway “ from a couple years later and to my ears it’s as over the top as some parts of Gene’s solo album. It also utilizes many of the same musicians who did Genes album.
When listening to the extremely limited amount of stuff out there with Sean I personally take some stuff with a grain of salt. I take into account Sean’s tendencies to be dramatic. Also I think it’s important to keep in mind that in the macho hard rock world - Sean and Bill and even the band to a certain extent seem to be hesitant to draw attention to the fact that Sean and Bill were gay. I think that gene and Paul as businessmen - businessmen who believe they know their audience’s collective mindset - I think they tend to down play Bill and Sean. That and ego - also let’s remember unfortunately Sean and Bill along with many successful people at that time fell into heavy drug use so memories can be fuzzy. Long live Sean Delaney ! Even if it was just for his involvement in “ makin love “. Rocket ride etc cheers ! And thank you 3 sides

Couldn’t of said it better myself! Thanks sooooo much to Three Sides and John for being sooo gracious and sharing these nuggets of kiss minutea gold! This is way better than any of the Loomis tapes. It’s very unfortunate that Sean did not get the credit he deserved. In fact, there’s not a lot of Sean’s interviews on UA-cam.
I do agree you have to take what Sean describes the stories with a big grain of salt lol….now I know where Eddie trunk gets it “I invented this and I introduced so and so lol.” Except Sean was more legit lol.

Sean Delaney was a talented guy. He coached KISS in theatrics and stage presence. He deserves so much credit, and to be known for his contributions to the band, but as success comes, sometimes the people who helped get you to the top get forgotten along the way. Well done on the interview, what an interesting guy. RIP Sean.

There were basically 3 theatrical bands that I can think of from that time: Alice Cooper, KISS & Genesis.
It's pretty clear that KISS would not have the stage presence without Sean Delany's imput & guidence.
Alice Cooper; did he have outside influences & imput ? I'm not sure....
And Gabriel with Genesis ? Completely on his own, only guided by the influence of Alice Cooper. Which is amazing....
In fact ? Peter Gabriel did his 1st costuming (a fox head on while wearing a red dress) without telling the band beforehand. He knew they'd reject it outright.
And he premiered it at a boxing venue in Dublin- that's balls....
Great interview- total gem !! So thank you !!

they even leave out or persist on doing....or removing the same original Members. Imagine such a long career and never being able to accept that the 2 members you continually blame are the same 2 members who really are the reason Kiss even can continue today. If not why the same make-up. Hits that got them where they are.....Beth and a Solo album from Ace. Otherwise Kiss were done. Kiss is and will always be ......

Sean made me sceptical when he said: For writing, Paul and I were "always" together. Always?
He co-wrote (?) "Love Gun" but didn't want credit?
Very strange, naive, for someone who knew the business. Was he paid instead? Or did he expect something else? What else did he want from his "baby Paulie"?
You mentioned "revenge" as a motiv.
    I think so too.
Also irritating was his statement, he was close to "pal" Peter. But Russ, Sean's nephew, said:
it didn't end up well with Peter!
Sean wanted acknowledgement and at the same time he discredited himself the most: Bill Aucoin accused him that he wanted to destroy the band!
    Bill was right.
Nevertheless Sean as the sixth member of KISS deserves respect.
    RIP Sean Delaney🌹

I mean in Peter Criss book he talks all about Sean and how he was the one that showed them how to move how to stay in character how to keep up the facade how many help them come up with their characters in the face paint designs I mean he was there early on on the road with them in a small little van early on going from show to show when they were absolutely nothing I mean he helped put this band on the map and he was a big part of their shows and the theatrical aspect of it all he was certainly like you said down in the trenches with this band I mean he wasn't in The Limousines he was busting his ass for these guys.

I had lunch with Bill Aucoin in North Hollywood and he said it himself that the blood did go into a different comic but didn't say which one. They didn't know at the time it was going into the wrong vat but he didn't say sports illustrated. He just said a different comic but didn't know which one for sure.

Cool interview. I believe most of his stories have some truth, but with typical exaggeration that happens over time. The stage crew revolt makes no sense at all. I’d buy that he met with the crew and they had fun destroying some props that everyone agreed sucked, but the whole “I got on the microphone, then Gene ran on stage, we trashed the whole set and got a redesigned one in two weeks” is crap.

    • @buffalorockcity7639

It was never said the stage was redesigned, but some of the early props that they had in the very beginning that you can see in the early photos of the stage are gone in later pics/videos of the stage.

Was at that hanger at Stewart Air Force Base, now Stewart Airport in Newburgh NY. The Stones used that hanger also. Went with guys in my first band.
Shawn forgot to mention how Peter was so drunk on Heinekin, that he passed out and couldn't rehearse. I believe his drum tech had to fill in for him.
They were paracticing the segues between songs.
During a break Gene came out with his girlfriend --Jan-- and was cool as could be... sat down on the curb and shot the shit with us. Just on of the guys...
We lived in a town nearby, and the father of the guitar player was a colonel in the Air Force, so we could get on the base.
Jan was pretty hot... She and Gene were both wearing black t-shirts with $immon$ printed in white on the front.
We were allowed to get in a van and drive into an adjacent parking lot, and see into the rehearsal, through the open hanger doors, and saw, maybe Shawn (guy had a mustache) showing Paul some moves up on the big stage.
Shawn has a lot of stories, I'm not sure of his total veracity... I think there is a lot of truth, but I think he's pretty "subjective" maybe stretches the story a bit...
Anyway cool to hear about their rehearsals at Stewart, having been there...
I also had a no makeup pic of them, that i won from Creem magazine, which i gave to some band rep to get signed...never saw the pic again... Dumb ass me!

yes indeed Dennis. I was there too at the early days . My name is David , I worked with Sean on jingles at Howard Marks and I remember you and (I think)your sister and others from the office. I also lived at the house in New City for a year since I was playing guitar with Sean's projects. Some of his stories are partly true but he always had to exaggerate his importance. Kiss might not have had all of their gimmicks when Aucoin took over but when I saw them rehearsing at Westbeth , the band was not looking to Sean for suggestions . Sean was a quick songwriter for sure but he wasn't a bad ass frontman in big NY groups . We did some recordings but hardly played a gig. Take care Dennis

The best thing about all these interviews and books like 'Kiss & Sell' is that the 'HARD CORE REALITY' is Kiss has ALWAYS been a corporation and that any one who thinks that only 4 individuals are responsible for the band's success is a gullible turd who has swallowed the biggest propaganda ploy rock and roll has ever produced (which is still purported to this day!).

Remember what Lydia Criss said in her book about Peter and her being into drugs before KISS and how Peter was doing more drugs as the years went on.
That might have been why the KISS camp didn't want to or let Peter be interviewed by himself; because the KISS camp didn't want people to know that Peter was using or that he was Married even back then.
