Too much ego is the hardest thing for a team to overcome. They should have learned from the Reds and especially Joey V. He left his ego at the door and humbled himself for the team. They all have on that team and it’s why they are crushing it.
For the next season the Padres selection should be locked in a monastery, for a month or so, before their spring training starts. That would perhaps work much better than those stupid one liner contests in which these overpaid guys just stupidly test their badass ego one liner contest. When this Padres team still wants to make an impact, they better start working together, to become a team, instead of being a bunch of coincidentally raked together individuals, who play ball like they’re doing a recreational game somewhere in some obscure park. Cheerio
There was a reason the Dodgers didn't sign Machado but instead went for players like Mookie and Freeman, their team attitude. Even veterans like Peralta, Heyward and J.D. Martinez. Kim and Cronenworth are the team players on the Padres.
The problem with both the Mets and padres is that talent and big names don’t exactly always solve your problems - they can in fact have the opposite effect and worsen your team with the expectations, the talent, and the ego operating around. At least the Mets are on a 5 game win streak and coming into San Diego with a lot of momentum. There’s still a half season left to play but time is running out.
I feel the same way. The only reason I was surprised about the padres failure more than the Mets is because the padres had more home grown talent. Typically that’s better for a squad, but both have been massive disappointments.
Mets and Padres had higher expectations by the media and its never a good sign with that. Mets tried to follow the Yankees formula which not even their own formula worked out; Padres tried to be like the Dodgers but with immaturity. Since the Padres beat LA in the NLDS, they jinxed themselves and expected to win the division.
@@therealjaystone2344 will say, Cohen is emulating the dodgers more than the Yankees. It doesn’t dispute your argument at all, but he’s been vocal that it took the dodgers a few years to be a juggernaut when they got new ownership. We’ve been bolstering our farm system with younger talent so who knows what will happen there.
@@scottbaldwin6763 i would argue neither the padres or Mets have a ton of home grown talent, top pitchers for both squads were brought in, all their stars were brought in with the exception of one (Tatis and Alonso) on each team. Alvarez is starting to come into his own for the Mets, same with Kim and Cronenworth but Kim wasn't really home grown either Edit: cronenworth wasnt even home grown lol
Funniest thing about this padres team as a dodgers fan is how many years I’ve heard from padre fans about how the dodgers buy all their talent. Obviously the dodgers are a big market team and have a lot of money to keep players around long term but a good amount of their players are either guys they drafted or signed to minor league deals and developed in their system. While the padres have signed or traded for literally every single good player on their roster aside from tatis and cronenworth. Padres payroll is actually higher than dodgers this year and the dodgers have still been significantly better despite all the injuries they’ve had
As a Phillies fan, until last season me too. We’ve developed like 3 major league bats in the last decade (Stott, Hoskins, Bohm) and have put out way more disappointments (Galvis, Brown, Franco, Asche, Moniak before being traded, etc)
The padres are like the angels, they have to learn they can’t win because of star players. They’re most successful player (on the field) was brought up through the minor league system. That’s why teams like the orioles are so good now. The orioles have done a very successful rebuild.
Even after watching Machado go to the Padres. Im actually glad he left in the long run because his ego was a cancer in the locker room that would not have fit well with this group.
It's always been the "mental", I would add that "player ego" makes failure mentally worse with every loss, the new season was too over hyped and the Pads were no longer the "underdogs" now they were expected to perform, all which added once again to the "mental" . 100% agree that it seems they were always being selfish trying to get bombs instead of getting the base hits needed to play team baseball.
Great video, you said it everyone wants to be a hero instead of just playing their part. This reminds me so much the Dominican baseball team to the WBC, too much talent together.
Exactly, this was a boom or bust situation. Seeing as how they are no where near the top of that division, it's safe to count them out at this point. They either embrace another rebuild or consider this the new norm.
They traded a pitcher (Gore) they drafted in 2017 who has only had two years in MLB despite being so highly touted. Who has a 4.42 ERA so far this year and a 4.5 last year. They traded a shortstop (Abrams) who hit .232 in 46 games for the Padres and has since hit .250 for the nationals in over a year's worth of games. They traded a potential prospect in Hassell and a couple other lower-ranked prospects in Wood and Susana. Not exactly "half your organization" when two of those traded for Soto already look like busts and none of the other prospects haven't been called up yet.
@@TheOldSchoolExpert Yeah let's just focus on on one trade to win an argument. Soto, Darvish, Hader, Musgrove, Clevinger (that one still really baffles me), Nola, Snell, Grisham, Cronenworth, etc. The point is they traded a LOT of capital to acquire these players, some prospects, some major league pieces. Now, a grand majority of prospects don't pan out, but they add organizational depth for when your stars go down with injury or underperform. And the Padres have virtually no one to fill in for those spots. They've built a 25-man roster (and a very flawed one at that), not a 40-man. And that doesn't even begin to touch how you're trading away controllable assets for pieces that only get more expensive and hamper your payroll, preventing you from even buying back some of that depth you've lost.
@@TheOldSchoolExpertthey also traded Ty France and Andres Muñoz, Trea Turner, Max Fried, Matt Brash, David Bednar. Point is is that Preller loves mortgaging his future for rentals and most of those trades have come back to bite him
For reference: 2019 Washington Nationals at the All-Star Break: 47-42 - World Series Champions 2021 Atlanta Braves at the All-Star Break: 44-45 - World Series Champions 2022: Philadelphia Phillies at the All-Star Break: 49-43 - Won NL Pennant With San Diego currently at 42-47 leading into the All-Star break, they are right in that same realm so I would keep faith. The core of that lineup is undeniably talented and although they have underperformed up to this point, I wouldn't doubt it for a second if they found a way to claw themselves into a playoff spot.
Goes to show that the first half of a season is to tinker, see what works and what doesn't, and get a long feel of how to adjust accordingly. Yes, it's been incredibly disappointing so far for the Padres, but as a fan who's watched basically each game so far they're at the 43-47 mark with many offensive guys underperforming severely. If they can jump out of the break with any of the Boegarts, Carpenter, Cronenworth, even Sanchez bunch hitting better again it will merely add to what we know Tatis Soto and Machado can do. Machado's basically won them the Mets series, and is rapidly getting on track. The bullpen is becoming a mess after a hot start but if they get Suarez back and try to add an arm they will be fine. It's really up to how the offense consistently comes through these last ~75 games. They have all the potential in the world, and have finally tasted some winning the past week (6 of 7) and the key is simple as getting runners on second or third to home. None of that existed for the first 75. Also, they're due to win some close games, of which they've lost at a seemingly impossible rate. Sorta the polar opposite of the Marlins as a whole right now. We'll see which teams are made of what with the second half dropoffs and pickups, it's gonna be entertaining!
I think the deal signing X was a mistake. Too much money locked up for too long. The friars had Manny, HSK, and Cronenworth - and probably should have added a really solid/star 1B and would have been much better, IMO.
the clash of egos and chemistry is rarely something teams consider when rebuilding and picking up star players... and a lot of the time that is their downfall
The problem with the Padres is that the roster think they are bound to win but don't actually make a real effort to do it. The clash of their egos made the roster a comomete disaster and they can't admit they aren't winning yet.
The problem with this Padres team is the same problem the 2022 Dominican World Classic team had: way too many stars. They all were too important to take a walk, bunt or simply try to hit a sacrifice fly.
As a long-suffering Padre fan (while I got here in ‘91 when they were actually good for a couple years… And rejoiced during the really good mid 90s years, it’s been mostly VERY DARK DAYS since!)… we spent Decades hearing that will never succeed, because no owner will ever spend the money necessary to get that one or two good players/dominant lights out pitcher that would put us over the top… weird that they kept going cheap in hiring managers (which is how that 2021 team ended up with JAYCE TINGLER.. no big shock he had had absolutely no managerial experience before this and was such a disappointment he likely never will again)…. We finally assembled a team we could stand proud rooting for again (like we did back in that ancient Glorious 1998 year!) and..:they have proceeded to crap all over themselves! Folks, we have been swept… At home… By 2 Last Place … teams!! we did not sweep a single series this season until last week! I can’t come to any other conclusion, other than San Diego as a city is cursed when it comes to sports teams! More so than Cleveland… OK may be the equal of Cleveland… We both lost our football team. At least they got one back, but they’re stuck with the second version of the Browns.
It's also ironic that Manny is the mature one on this team. He's grown a lot since his early days, the rest of the young team would be smart to listen to him.
Man… even as a royals fan I’m kinda sad for angels fans. Mike trout is only getting older and it sucks that he hasn’t won a WS and obviously it’s gonna be sad to not have shohei around but it’s been a good run
As long as Houston is still in the division and if they keep playing and developing great depth for their team, the Angels are never even going to get close to a World Series.
Reminds me of the 2011 Red Sox, spent 300 million in 2010 offseason just to win one game better than the previous season and finished 3rd. That team was loaded but under preformed.
what do you mean right the ship? the mariners arent supposed to be good. they were lucky to have the record they did last year. iirc they scored less runs than they allowed last season
@@emupike6 That was 2021 (90 wins, just missed the playoffs). In 2022 they were +67 with an expected win total of 89. With the incredible 2nd half of last year, many people expected the M's to take another step up this year.
The M's are still early in their competitive window with a lot of young talent. They've definitely underperformed this year but hopefully this recent surge is a sign of good things to come.
@@emupike6 They've been collecting prospects for 6-7 years now. A couple panned out, and most didn't. They need to cut the umbilical cord on some of them or send/keep them in AAA. Similar to the Padres supporting cast to the core 4 in the lineup. I'd say they have until the trade deadline next year.
Good video dude! It may be early to judge but would you be willing to do a video on the Mariners and their struggle this season? Any Mariners fans know why they're struggling so mightily so far?
@tomcline7530 it's my first year of watching baseball so I'm not as knowledgeable as some of you guys but to me it looks like the batting is the weak link. The only players whom I'm really disappointed by are Julio Rodriguez and J.P Crawford. I thought these guys were suppose to be the best players on the roster right now.
@@Garland_From_FF1 I've also only been interested for a couple months and don't actually watch, but the stats interest me. So, for Seattle, the only reason they're even .500 and not much worse is because so far their pitching has been way overperforming with a team ERA of 3.78 and various metrics put them top 3-4 in the AL. Their batting is really bad despite a team OPS+ of exactly 100 and total runs being like 8th in the AL. They're worst in strikeouts, subsequently have the fewest ABs, and have a low team batting average which makes them reliant on HRs. I think they're first in walks which greatly improves their OPS and hides the fact that they actually suck shit. This is why I don't like OPS as it greatly overvalues Walks and greatly undervalues hits relative to HRs and Walks. Their young 'stars' are basically just barely league avg by OPS and definitely aren't performing relative to their hype. They don't really have any abysmal hitters atm, but Kelenic/JRod are just barely avg with JP being the best on the team at slightly above average. Frankly I think the only reason people have any expectations is because they got hot last year to get into the playoffs. That and they have a young core of players with a lot of hype. Kelenic was seen as a can't miss prospect for some reason yet I and most others think he sucks. JRod is also seen as a guaranteed superstar, again idk why, and the fact that they just gave him a massive contract only reinforces that belief and people seem to have forgotten that he's never actually shown that he's good yet. Cal Raleigh is another young core guy who hits well as Catcher which makes him an extremely desireable piece, and he's probably the best so far. So, yeah, they don't actually have a reason to be considered good and IMO are at best a .500 team as is. This season has just been bizarre with a lot of bad-mediocre teams way overperforming and I'm certain most of them will regress in the second half. Teams like the Ms but even more extreme, like the Yankees, have been absolutely terrible on offense and can't hit the ball yet their pitching is way overperforming and keeping them just above an even record. Baseball has had a problem with ignoring hits in favor of swinging for HRs, and this really started getting worse when 'statcast' came along and made the emphasis on 'exit velo' and 'launch angles' but seems to be far worse this season than before. The focus on HRs has lead to streaky, inconsistent (and inefficient) offense and bad loses when guys aren't hitting as was showcased by teams like the Phillies in the WS last year and this year.
@@Garland_From_FF1 JP's actually putting up a pretty solid season this year, at least offensively. Julio has been dissapointing from his last season, but hes not having a bad season by any means, and will definitley get over his slump. And our pitching has just been outstanding this year, one of the best rotations and bullpens in the league. The biggest issue is consistency with the bats, especially with the K rates. Guys like Geno, Teo, Kelenic, and Julio strike out a ton, which doesnt produce a ton of offense. The team definitely has the potential, just needs more consitency, and needs guys like Wong and Pollock to pick it up.
I am still optimistic, as a former resident , of San Diego, in North Park, near the Mormon Church. I attended San Diego state, and greatly enjoyed the last of the orange groves in Mission Valley. I threw in a share of a box seat in the stadium for fried chicken and other catered foods during the Padres games. I am still connected to the team’s nostalgia
At the 4:00 mark, you cite Machado's signing of his $300M contract in Feb 2019 as the largest contract in American sports. I'm certain this is incorrect. Stanton's $325M contract with Miami in 2014 supercedes Machado by $25M, and was signed approximately five (5) years earlier.
While I really enjoy the energy and confidence oozing out of those DR players and how they enjoy themselves in games, there are also many times when you just don't quite see them giving their all for the team. Many of them had big egos and at times when you need players to grind and fight they just don't seem to do that, some of the swings looked terrible like they didn't even care
There are only two dominican fixtures in the padres' lineup, Soto and Tatis, and they are far and away their most productive hitters this season. I don't think those two are responsible for the team's underperformance.
It's impossible to know for sure if the Pads will bounce back... As has been true all year, they have incredible talent and, on paper, are a championship-caliber team... but they just can't get the W's... I don't know why. There are plenty of great moments and wonderful plays and clutch hits - the team is a joy to watch... but baseball being a game of breaks, sometimes a key break or two goes against you, and it will cost you a game. Or in the Padres case, a large number of them. It's frustrating to see a team this good unable to win. The Braves are unstoppable for a fraction of the payroll... *shrug* I'll keep being a fan and hoping for the best, but at this point, there's not much I can recommend that far-smarter people than myself have already explored.
Of course they occasionally get clutch hits, but their awful average hitting with RISP is likely the number one culprit in their disappointing record. They are currently 30th in the league, and I believe that before the recent sweep of the Angels they were dead last.
When you combine an alarmingly low RISP average with bullpen mismanagement, some injuries out of their control, you get a flurry of gut-wrenching losses because there's been so many that you look back on and say "they really should have won that". They're not getting out-slugged. They're not getting beaten down a whole lot. They've been beating themselves. They literally just need minimal improvement/longevity from the bullpen down the stretch and just a COUPLE more hitters to play close to their standard, to win at a heap more games. So many blown leads and poor situational hitting.... it's been stressful. I'd rather endure half a season of torture if it means they can prosper for the second half like many past WS teams have. But that's still a reach into the heavens of a wish.
This is why I never put much energy into who people think are going to win the world series 3 months before the season even starts. Who we think might win up until September may not even be who does, tis why baseball is so great.
Hey at least Hader is looking like himself this year 😅 actually he's playing better than I remember. Wilson and Wacha come back soon too but with Manny slumping and Nola and Sanchez being total liabilities 😂 we need quite a bit
@1n_Only_Astro I mean Cosgrove, Wilson and Hill are all decent Honeywell too our problem is we have 2 liabilities at Catcher and we signed a free agent for mo reason other than we didn't wanna miss out lol 😆
The reason why Padres is being Madres is simple. Nobody wants to play for San Diego. They’re there for money like Correa is in Minnesota for two years. Uniform, franchise - I mean there is just nothing at all baseball about San Diego Padres. I would take money to play there but honestly would feel lack of motivation. Juan Soto never wanted to be there. He’s eager to go elsewhere after this season.
Why in the hell did they sign a 30 year old shortstop to an 11 year deal like that? I mean Xander has consistently good in his years with Boston but how can they expect him to keep that up until he's 40? There's no way he's going to stay at shortstop as he ages, at a minimum. How many position players are worth 25 million at 35-40 years old? They are going to regret that I think.
Yea and SS has the biggest drop off in defense stats as they age. Im a Braves fan and loved Dansby but glad they didnt sign him to a long contract like the Cubs did. Arcia cost 1/10th the money and has 90% of the defense and just as much offense.
@@boonedocksfl2012 Dansby will be 36 by the time his contract ends. He will surely have regressed, but I don't think he will be a disaster like he would be after 36 and like Boegarts will inevitably be.
It’s frustrating for us Nats fans to see most of our star power being traded away 😢, like Soto of the Padres and Scherzer to the Mets. Seeing how bad the Padres and the Mets are doing, only reinforces the idea that they should have stayed in Washington as their performance for their new clubs has been terrible and second the reality is that they could have if stayed turned Washington into one of the next premier teams in the League up there with the likes of the Washington Capitals in the NHL 🏒 with Backstrom, Wilson and Ovie. They had to go chasing after money 💵 and now look at you.
I kinda hate the notion that the padres had a "fail rebuild" cause even if you just look at 2019-2022 they made the playoffs twice and won 3 playoff series. Like thats alot more than alot of teams can say in that same time span. Like yeah they aren't doing that well RN but after the win today they look real good going into the all star break
2 of those series were wild card series. Let’s calm down did all that trading and signing free agents and they looked like shit in the NLCS and this season is still a bust so far. It’s a fail rebuild after another failed rebuild
@@retrobat153 the brewers are not seen as that lmaoooo wth the team that is looked at with that notion is the cardinals in that division. Padres have underperformed. Wild card and NLDS series victories are nothing to hang your hat on
@bobtheblarp-brawlstars1507 that Padres trade with Seattle was incredibly lopsided looking back. I can justify trading Bednar. He gave San Diego eJoe Musgrove. To an extent, I can even justify trading MacKenzie Gore for Juan Soto. However, the Emmanuel Clase and Ty France deals were so bad.
As an O's fan who seen Machado play everyday I was bummed to see such a great talent be developed and then sign elsewhere but was happy to see the ego of his go.
Props to Bob Melvin for behaving professional, as he chooses to go work for the Padres enemy (the Giants) this next season, rather than stay and manage the Padres under his current contract. That says a lot about Padres disfunction. Is this the start of a Bruce Bochy repeat storyline?…As manager Bruce Bochy left the Padres to then go on to win 3 World Series with the Giants. Melvin proves Preller’s press conference two weeks ago, where Preller sought to con the listener (spouting Padres unity and cohesiveness) was nothing more than Preller’s echo chamber of regurgitated talking points! It’s a no brainer for the Giants to hire Melvin. Melvin brings keen baseball savvy and also a desire to stick it to Preller for micromanaging him. Melvin brings the Giants the bonus of all the Padres’ nuanced trade secrets/inner workings. Similar to when the Tampa Bay Bucs’ hired John Gruden, bringing with him insider knowledge of how to beat the Raiders in that very next SB, Gruden having just left as Raiders’ head coaching job the season prior. Expect the Padres to be more of the same next year, as Preller is a pro at hiring ineffective managers, cultivating bizarre rosters, speaking endless empty press conferences, and charging the fans high prices for ugly team performance. The Padres big window for a WS win was this just completed failed season, and the Tatis absent National League championship series against the Phillies the season prior. The Padres “elite hitters” spent much of this season sliding down their enormously bloated piles of money (like the Joker). Instead of hitting in clutch moments this season, the Padres “elite hitters” were so pedestrian that the team didn’t win an extra inning game till after game 150. Juan Soto turned on the after burners (of stat stacking) the last two weeks of the season when the team was already eliminated and playing the MLB’s worst competition. Thus guaranteeing Scott Boras will demand half the pink slip of Petco Park to keep Soto as a Padre. Manny Machado paused from hitting into double plays in critical situations just long enough to get his “feel good” 30 homers. Tatis’s season can be summed up in that he robbed one homer and then danced like a teenager after their first beer. Preller should be having Tatis watch career montage videos on Tony Gwynn, Derek Jeter, and Ichiro to see what leadership looks like. Instead Tatis is best known as the steroid third base skipidy-do-da guy. The Padres should have appreciated/cashed in on the high level of pitching the got this past season from bottom of the rotation Wacha and Lugo. At least 3-5 of their top pitchers are going to be gone next season (Snell, Hader, etc.). The Padres aren’t worth the price of admission for real baseball fans. Padres attendance is half for the party atmosphere of the Gas Lamp downtown scene and half bandwagon interest in the team. No thanks…
As a white Sox fan…I always complain about the team not spending BIG money. When I look at the padres and Mets I realize money doesn’t always equal winning
Yea thier team culture is just off to me and has been for 3 years. Too cocky. Too assumptive. The Memphis Grizzlies of baseball kind of. Cant prove it but theres just something about this "hey lets have like 7 number 3 hitters in our lineup" thing just doesnt work well. It never really allows each star player to all reach their potential. Something about taking a guy who is a cleanup hitter and making them hit 2nd or 6th subconcsciohsly over time morphs them into that and they dont produce like a number 4 hitter anymore they just turn into a glorified role player.
I am a big Braves fan. We are good. There’s no disputing it. However, for some reason, I don’t want my team playing the Padres in the post season. They are still extremely talented. I don’t think they will rebound this year, but look out if they do. The NL West is still up for grabs.
I was honestly a little worried to click and watch (I'm a Pads fan), because of the title, but really great video. Awesome breakdown with cold hard facts and as little bias as possible, also ending was good too.
You should of waited a couple months, season is 55% done. They have a couple months to turn it around buddy. Baseball season is 162, that’s the beauty of baseball

Big thing to take note of is that two franchises doing major reworks at the time (Phillies and Padres) both ran into the same issue with their rebuilds, that being that the 2016-2017 drafts were just blech at the high end of the the first round. This really almost destroyed the Phillies plan to contend until they basically said “screw it” and just threw money at the problem until they made the playoffs.

To have a true world series run you need 2-3 WAR seasons from role players, bottom line. Every team has between 2 and 5 stars like the Padres but that is still only ~60% of your at bats going to your best players. Every WS team of the past decade got there on top of overperforming role players.
That’s why Andrew Friedman is the smartest owner in baseball. He knows how to build and sustain a winning team. Plus, he carefully plans out each and every trade that the Dodgers have made these past 11 years. One thing I heard is that the Padres recklessly threw money around because they were so desperate to give Peter Seidler a ring before he died last November and they failed miserably
Its gotta be locker room more than anything. They're also pretty unlucky considering they have the third best run differential in the NL. I still think they can turn it around but they gotta figure it out fast.
Last franchise to throw a no-hitter in terms of MLB history. So prior to 2021, the other 29 teams had done it at least once in their franchises history. The Padres were the last of the 30 teams to pitch their first no-no, which came in 2021.
@@DaWARRoom ahhh - yes that makes perfect sense. That changes the entire objective of the point so that context is super helpful. Even if ppl think you meant the last occurrence in the MLB, it wouldn’t get the point across. Thank you for the clarity
The Padres always win the off-season. AJ Preller is a genius. It's all a plan to get the D-backs, Dodgers and Giants over-confident. MLB Network told me so.
What does Carlos Rodon, Spencer Turnbull, John Means, Wade Miley, Corey Kluber, Tyler Gilbert and Domingo German have in common? Theyve all thrown no hitters since Joe Musgrove's no hitter... so no, theyre not the last franchise to have a pitcher throw a no hitter. Dont know where you heard that from.
Melvin is a great manager. You can see the team starting to turn the corner a little bit. If not this year I think the team will mesh by next year to have an amazing season.

They've got a 48-40 pythagorean and have had health issues. They've only won like 20% of 1-run games. Peripherals suggest this is mostly bad luck and they'll be alright.
@@SimplyCali619 there's no way these trends hold. That's not to say something else might fall apart, or even if they do play great that they'll make the playoffs. But, no, this is nkt a team in need of blowing up and their performance has nothing to do with egos.
@Arminian100 Over the past month, the bats have been hitting well and SHOULD have more wins if it weren't for the bullpen blowing up late. But plenty of games to go. All the bubble teams need to have a hot start in the 2nd half.

The Dodgers always seem to make a huge splash but it isn't the Core Idea of building the team, of the Top guys on the team, Mookie Betts, JD Martinez, and, Freddie Freeman are the only major pieces signed from free agency. The Padres don't understand that of the Core guys on the team Fernando Tatis JR. is the only player DEVELOPED through the Minors and it was a FLUKE that they got him, In an ideal world he is raking with the White Soxs The Padres are literally the Adults going to their friend's house and forcing their kid to play with the other kid, Juan Soto, Manny Machado, Jake Cronenworth, Xander Bogaerts, Josh Hader, Blake Snell, Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove. You can say all you want that these signings are going to take the Padres to the World Series but it just won't because free agency isn't to build your team, it's to supplement the team.
really frustrating seeing how good this team can be but just underperforming. been a pads fan my whole life so i’m used to disappointment but this is unparalleled. it’s one thing to flat out suck but to have the talent there and just not play to your potential is exhausting to watch. the fan in me is saying they’ll turn it around in the 2nd half but i would be genuinely surprised if we make the postseason. really hope this is a wake up call for them and 2024 will be a full 180° difference
Hard to 180 when you're wholly invested for the long run in these guys. That's both daunting but hopeful that they turn it around as they've done the past 7 games and after the break. The best performers are, despairingly, Soto - Kim - Hader - Snell - Wacha --- all guys that are not signed long-term. But, the focus should really just be on now until the end because they will not sell. They're so invested that they'd likely trudge through 2024 and 2025 with the same core of long-term signees before considering an escape plan if they can't get it done. Don't be too worried though, they're developing quite a few solid players still that aren't getting much attention but have quietly been getting a lot better. There's some Twitter channels actively showing those names. Getting Salas was awesome too, dude could be a crazy good prospect by 19 or 20, maybe sooner? Lol. Great splits at High A at 17.
@@erikletendre7512 yeah guys like manny and tatis will definitely turn it around but it’s tough having them locked up for a while if shit goes south lol. might be an unpopular opinion but signing xander for that long was a terrible idea.if we don’t make the postseason this year i wouldn’t be surprised to see some big changes
Padres case it just players not performing to the back of their baseball cards. They might have an off year but one can’t expect soto, tatis and manny to not produce at their normal levels. The only contract that really did not make sense of Yu Davish. They would have been better off offering a higher annual value and less years then extending him for 6 years.
The Giants are a pretty surprising team this year. They definitely have a solid farm system. If they can get some good pitchers before the trade deadline San Diego doesn’t have a chance. And the Dodgers better be watching their backs.
They had playoff success last year, I don’t think bolstering that roster is exactly a rebuild. Also, still a long way to go. All it takes is a hot streak
You failed to mention the two best pitchers getting hurt at the end of 2020. I believe that spurred some moves that wouldn’t have happened otherwise. Again, 2021 had pitching injuries. Leaving that out doesn’t make any sense.
The good thing about this debacle is it's very easy to understand. The offense is 100% to blame. Pitching and defense has been great (minus the last 2 weeks for the bullpen). The stars need to be stars and the other needs to fill their roles. Haven't done that yet.
The manager has needs to have a Mike Singletary type press conference. You know "Cannot play with them! Cannot win with them! Cannot coach with them! Can't do it! I want WINNERS! I want people that WANT to win!" I mean I would rip my players a new one in press conference for this.
Machado said at the beginning of the year to the SD fans, "Don't boo us now and jump on the bandwagon later when we start winning!"....Ya still ain't winning, bud 😂😂😂
As an Australian that watches baseball of course i chose a hard team to support for off again. I did the same with the Bills (been following for a decade) and Mavericks (massive basketball fan all my life). But hey atleast im not a band wagoner

Too much ego is the hardest thing for a team to overcome. They should have learned from the Reds and especially Joey V. He left his ego at the door and humbled himself for the team. They all have on that team and it’s why they are crushing it.
💯
One of thee reds young players called himself the “fastest man alive” but I do see what you are saying lol.
@@NightshadeDE Well, he maybe operating in facts too. 😂
@@davidkeller9345 he missed the whole point: Dodgers are an analytical team like the Rays. Mega analytics sucks btw
@@scottbaldwin6763 i would argue neither the padres or Mets have a ton of home grown talent, top pitchers for both squads were brought in, all their stars were brought in with the exception of one (Tatis and Alonso) on each team. Alvarez is starting to come into his own for the Mets, same with Kim and Cronenworth but Kim wasn't really home grown either
Edit: cronenworth wasnt even home grown lol
Funniest thing about this padres team as a dodgers fan is how many years I’ve heard from padre fans about how the dodgers buy all their talent. Obviously the dodgers are a big market team and have a lot of money to keep players around long term but a good amount of their players are either guys they drafted or signed to minor league deals and developed in their system. While the padres have signed or traded for literally every single good player on their roster aside from tatis and cronenworth. Padres payroll is actually higher than dodgers this year and the dodgers have still been significantly better despite all the injuries they’ve had
Wow bro that's crazy! i was sad when we let manny go but seeing the how orioles are playing now i can for look past it lol.

As a White Sox fan, I can sympathize with the pain of going through a failed rebuild.
I never remember your team being as annoying while rebuilding though. This Padres roster seems to have way too many ego problems.
@@SuperCatacata because we thought we were set and had one of the best teams in baseball history. Cleary these guys don't play well together.
As a Phillies fan, until last season me too. We’ve developed like 3 major league bats in the last decade (Stott, Hoskins, Bohm) and have put out way more disappointments (Galvis, Brown, Franco, Asche, Moniak before being traded, etc)
As a Padres fan, we already had a failed rebuild in 2016. Enough is enough.
At least you won in 2005.

@@adammiller3178 He’s a punk.
I totally agree. The Padres have an ego problem.
It is very hard to rebuild when you trade away half your organization
@@TheOldSchoolExpert James Wood is a top 10 prospect with MASSIVE potential
@@TheOldSchoolExpertthey also traded Ty France and Andres Muñoz, Trea Turner, Max Fried, Matt Brash, David Bednar. Point is is that Preller loves mortgaging his future for rentals and most of those trades have come back to bite him
For reference:
2019 Washington Nationals at the All-Star Break: 47-42 - World Series Champions
2021 Atlanta Braves at the All-Star Break: 44-45 - World Series Champions
2022: Philadelphia Phillies at the All-Star Break: 49-43 - Won NL Pennant
With San Diego currently at 42-47 leading into the All-Star break, they are right in that same realm so I would keep faith. The core of that lineup is undeniably talented and although they have underperformed up to this point, I wouldn't doubt it for a second if they found a way to claw themselves into a playoff spot.
A dodgers fan not being an ass? This is truly a sight to behold. You are a unicorn my friend.
😂😂😂
That is not the same realm
I think the deal signing X was a mistake. Too much money locked up for too long. The friars had Manny, HSK, and Cronenworth - and probably should have added a really solid/star 1B and would have been much better, IMO.
It was so random too. Struck out on turner and judge so go grab the other guy
What star 1B was available?
@BronzeScimatar, the worst mistake the Padres made in the Preller Era was trading away Ty France. He should be the Padre 1B.
@@jessepressler208 yes
@jonny-dp2qr Turner should be available at the trade deadline. He has played well at Fenway and the Red Sox will almost certainly sell.

Xander Boegarts will be playing 1B and DH in a few years dont worry
the clash of egos and chemistry is rarely something teams consider when rebuilding and picking up star players... and a lot of the time that is their downfall
The biggest question - Juan Soto was not Juan Soto the moment he put on a Padre uniform?

Good video dude! It may be early to judge but would you be willing to do a video on the Mariners and their struggle this season?
Any Mariners fans know why they're struggling so mightily so far?
Mostly because their players are bad and can't score enough runs to win games.
I don't think those two are responsible for the team's underperformance.
as a pads fan, this is straight facts. great video man keep it up!
FANS WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND
WHEN A MLB PLAYER GETS A BIG CONTRACT, THEY DON'T CARE ANYMORE..
As a padres fan, this hurts me to see our flaws, yet this is the truth. We need to stop with the shortstops 😂 We need relievers.

As a mariners fan, Ty was one of the best additions we've made in a long time.
The season ain't over, bro.
As an O's fan who seen Machado play everyday I was bummed to see such a great talent be developed and then sign elsewhere but was happy to see the ego of his go.
Four time all star AND two time World Series champion Xander :’) as a Red Sox fan his loss still hurts
Melvin brings
the Giants the bonus of all the Padres’ nuanced trade secrets/inner workings.
No thanks…
They may not be a winning franchise, but they sure have a great game day experience.
The Clippers of the MLB.
As a white Sox fan…I always complain about the team not spending BIG money. When I look at the padres and Mets I realize money doesn’t always equal winning
Great video Ty
As a dodgers fan I love videos like this
Mookie putting in work
As your fan base also love murdering opposing fans in the parking lot 💀
lmao ur obsessed 😊
Batting under 220 won't get you anywhere even with the best clubhouse atmosphere in the game.
@breadandcircuses8127 because it's a bad batting average
I was honestly a little worried to click and watch (I'm a Pads fan), because of the title, but really great video.
Awesome breakdown with cold hard facts and as little bias as possible, also ending was good too.
Thank you‼️
Well stiff bats is the reason. They got nervous and couldn’t perform when it was expected.
You should of waited a couple months, season is 55% done. They have a couple months to turn it around buddy. Baseball season is 162, that’s the beauty of baseball
They should’ve hired Bruce Bochy when they had the chance and the Bogearts signing was “silly”
That’d be interesting… Bochy back in the NL West
Bruce Bochy never wants to be AJ Preller puppet. As much as I want bochy, The elephant in the room is AJ preller.
@@Fujiwaramoguu is he the angels GM?
@@adanalyst6925 Padres GM and baseball of operation. There's alot of micromanaging and lack of proper development in the Padres Organization, all rooting to AJ preller, our analytic and scouting report is absolutely caca, I'm not saying AJ preller is a bad person, he's doing everything he can but he does not know how to make a proper lineup. Good scout but really really bad GM. He trades Ty France and Munoz for Austin Nola, just to give you a hindsight of how bad his trade is. Bad bad habit of trading prospects for washed up veterans.
@@Fujiwaramoguu that makes sense, that might be why Padres are so bad this year despite lots of payroll
Giving Manning Machado an extension on his contract was a really dumb move, considering you still had him locked up for the next 6-years.
This year would be the year Machado would opted out of his contract. He threated the organization that he's going to opted out in spring training as well. The owner Peter Seidler wanted to give Manny a ill-advise contract extension. Preller signed Bogaerts to a 280 Million contract knowing he has a chronic wrist injury that hasn't heal in years and doesn't want to get surgery on it. Padres paid max value for Bogaerts without getting any discount with a injury . That how terribly run this whole franchise been from owner and POBO AJ Preller. They also gave Cronenworth a 80 Million dollar contract when he still had 2 years of arbitration left and his number been declining every year since.
He's still one if the top 3 or 4 productive guys on the line up . Imagine how bad they'd be without him. Plus he seems to be heating back up
@charlielong8941 Grisham, Sanchez, Nola, Bogarts and Darvish are all very disappointing
Edit: Nice to see Hader looking like himself again
@@adamlauer1096 The issue about Hader is he's currently a me guy first. It's a contract year he's afraid to get hurt so won't pitch 3 consecutive days if need be. Preller cause a log jam in the infield. how do you give Cronenworth that contract when you didn't need to. Now Cronenworth would be hard to trade and plus you won't be trading Kim this year because of the Korea Series next year. Be really interesting what Preller does to try and save his job at the trade deadline. Do you go for it all or do you sell and attach prospects to get rid of contracts?
@@charlielong8941 Machado will bounce back imo, bogarts is still productive just not worth all that. If we weren't stuck with old hurt Darvish until he's 42 going for it all again would be a much clearer path. So idk, they're just so talented
Soto’s cards have dipped and superfractors are easily attainable while Tatis cards are slowly rising 🤟🏼
This team is following the same path as the team that had Kimbrel, Kemp, and the Upton's. That blew up causing Bud Black to lose his job.
Money doesn't buy chemistry, but they still have time to turn it around.
Don't mock Kershaw lmao

Darvish isn't having the best year, but I think teams stress offense over defense when it comes to rebuilds. San Diego is THAT team.
To have a true world series run you need 2-3 WAR seasons from role players, bottom line. Every team has between 2 and 5 stars like the Padres but that is still only ~60% of your at bats going to your best players. Every WS team of the past decade got there on top of overperforming role players.
And you also need unsung heroes that no one expected to see it coming too
This is all my music to my ears!
Keep it up San Diego you deserve everything that's coming to you! 😂
😂😂😂😂
Lousy Toxic dodger fans y'all suck fr, y'all gotta have some heart
That’s why Andrew Friedman is the smartest owner in baseball. He knows how to build and sustain a winning team. Plus, he carefully plans out each and every trade that the Dodgers have made these past 11 years. One thing I heard is that the Padres recklessly threw money around because they were so desperate to give Peter Seidler a ring before he died last November and they failed miserably
Its gotta be locker room more than anything. They're also pretty unlucky considering they have the third best run differential in the NL. I still think they can turn it around but they gotta figure it out fast.
1:43 didn’t Domingo German throw a no no last month ? I mean I guess that’s a perfect game haha but
Last franchise to throw a no-hitter in terms of MLB history.
@@CYMotorsport No problem. Thanks for watching!
The Padres always win the off-season. AJ Preller is a genius. It's all a plan to get the D-backs, Dodgers and Giants over-confident. MLB Network told me so.
The same Aj Preller that traded away Ty France, Bo Naylor, half their farm system for guys who are playing below their average
Hey...all the guys on MLB Network love him. Talk to them.
How many times have we heard that, if they are starting to turn the corner that’s one helluva big corner.🤷🏼♂️
I’ve been waiting for this video
I gave up following the team and am just a fan of Kim and his evolution as the best utility player in baseball
As a Phillies fan who enjoyed watching both the Phils’ and Pads’ playoffs in 2022, I was really hoping to see both teams have a rematch in the 2023 NLCS. Disappointing.
I watched this team when they played cleveland. Pads have a ton of talent. I expect them to make the playoffs-they are good
They've got a 48-40 pythagorean and have had health issues. They've only won like 20% of 1-run games.
Peripherals suggest this is mostly bad luck and they'll be alright.
And ZERO wins in extras
@@SimplyCali619 there's no way these trends hold. That's not to say something else might fall apart, or even if they do play great that they'll make the playoffs. But, no, this is nkt a team in need of blowing up and their performance has nothing to do with egos.
@Arminian100 Over the past month, the bats have been hitting well and SHOULD have more wins if it weren't for the bullpen blowing up late. But plenty of games to go. All the bubble teams need to have a hot start in the 2nd half.
Even 88 wins is an embarrassment for a team that’ was supposed to compete for a world series
@@andrewkutsenda8826 sure. There's a difference between having a bad season and needing to blow it up or a failed experiment
For wanting to be like the Dodgers, the Padres are Failing, The Padres are buying a baseball team not building one. Look at the Dodgers the Big names on the team were drafted OR developed through the System. Will Smith, Max Muncy, Julio Urias, Clayton Kershaw, Walker Buehler, Tony Gonsolin, (up in coming) Bobby Miller.
The Dodgers always seem to make a huge splash but it isn't the Core Idea of building the team, of the Top guys on the team, Mookie Betts, JD Martinez, and, Freddie Freeman are the only major pieces signed from free agency.
The Padres don't understand that of the Core guys on the team Fernando Tatis JR. is the only player DEVELOPED through the Minors and it was a FLUKE that they got him, In an ideal world he is raking with the White Soxs
The Padres are literally the Adults going to their friend's house and forcing their kid to play with the other kid, Juan Soto, Manny Machado, Jake Cronenworth, Xander Bogaerts, Josh Hader, Blake Snell, Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove.
Think of the USA miracle on ice team. There were way better NHL players available, but that didn't make them a better unit together.
The Giants are a pretty surprising team this year. They definitely have a solid farm system. If they can get some good pitchers before the trade deadline San Diego doesn’t have a chance. And the Dodgers better be watching their backs.
Are you planning a similar video for the Seattle Mariners? They were also supposed to be good this year.
The only good thing about all this madres talk is nobody gives a flying fuck about those losers😂😂😂 LETS GO DODGERS!!!
Someday
It's almost like Advanced statistics are not the end all be all of baseball...but hey, great launch angles
As an Australian that watches baseball of course i chose a hard team to support for off again.
I did the same with the Bills (been following for a decade) and Mavericks (massive basketball fan all my life). But hey atleast im not a band wagoner
Team spending is crazy!!!! hopefully they can save there season.
