Great video. It's a nice walk down memory lane to see how it all began under the Preller era. One thing you did forget to mention though was regarding the Luis Castillo trade. He was traded right back to Miami less than a week after being acquired after it was discovered that Preller had hidden the fact that Colin Rea had a partially torn UCL at the time of the trade. He was suspended for that just as much as for the Pomeranz fiasco

I was so thrilled the day of the 2022 trade deadline absolutely crazy day to be a Padres fan and hopefully Juan Soto will be better next year and moving forward. As a Braves fan, I have to thank AJ Preller. While 2015-2017 were lean years, the trades the Padres made with the Braves were essential in winning 5 straight NL East titles, and the 2021 World Series. And, I'm not just talking Max Fried. The Kimbrel/Upton trade was definitely a salary dump by Atlanta. The Comp Balance A Round pick they received from San Diego was used for some guy named Austin Riley. In the very next round, the Braves used their improved pick from tanking to take a reliever named AJ Minter. Kemp actually played pretty well for the Braves for a season and a half, but then they traded him back to the Dodgers in a trade of bad salaries (Scott Kazmir), but got super utility guy Charlie Culberson in the deal who helped them win 2 division titles in 2018 and 2019. And, then there's Matt Wisler. The Braves kept him for a few years then flipped him and a couple of other minor leaguers to Cincinnati for Adam Duvall. Plus- he also took Soto out of the NL East. Fried, Riley, Duvall- 3 guys who were huge reasons why the Braves won a World Series. Oh, and Esteury Ruiz went from Milwaukee to Oakland in the 3 team deal that sent Sean Murphy to the Braves in December 2022. Thanks AJ!

I don't know if you should just trade him away next season or ride with Hader next year and see how far the Padres can get. If that's the case just give Hader a qualifying offer so if he does sign with a different team the Padres with the team that signed Hader to a contract will have to give up their draft pick.

Turner was the Padres 3rd ranked prospect in 2015. Playing in the SD system until a year after he was drafted so he could be traded as the PTBNL in the Wil Myers deal. He wasn't a low ranking prospect by any stretch. He was drafted in 2014, and to start 2015, he was already SD 3rd best prospect, even though he was basically already traded to the Nats.
Preller isn’t just a guy who is addicted to trades, he’s arguably the only GM in professional American sports who is willing to consistently make calculated risks that could potentially cost him his job. He’s like the one guy who actually cares about winning more than his own job security. Most GMs look at the Darvish/Snell/Musgrove/Nola/Clevinger/Soto trades and shy away because the guys they give away could end up becoming the next Tatis. Maybe they make 1 or 2 of those trades over the course of a decade. But Preller is able to make these trades consistently not only because he has hit on a lot of guys in trades (Profar, Grisham, Soto, Cronenworth, Alfaro, Darvish, Musgrove, Hader etc) but because he also manages to replenish the farm system way quicker than other teams. (He gave up several top prospects for Soto and still has Merrill/Campusano.) Plus he has a penchant for finding value through waiver claims (Brad Hand/Kirby Yates) and international signings (Nick Martinez/Robert Suarez/Ha-Seong Kim/Pierce Johnson). Preller isn’t the perfect GM, but his philosophy of consolidating talent through huge trades with the confidence that the top 100 prospects he trades away will quickly be replaced by more Padres top 100 prospects is truly unique and a major competitive advantage for San Diego. This is truly the first time in my life that my favorite baseball team is actually a threat to win the World Series.

@@philthornton1382 I don't know man. As a padres fan I remember the trade happening, Colin Rea made one start for the Marlins, needed TJ and the got exchanged back for Luis Castillo who they got for him. If you look up the trade tree it looks funky.
It should also be noted how creative Preller was in building the Padres organization. When he took over, the organization' had gone through a series of owners who were... penny pinching is a mild term. Thankfully none of them move the Padres out of town although on at least one occasion literally was all packed up in moving trucks. But, none of them were willing to make the investments to build a strong organization. In one particularly infamous draft, the Padres passed on Justin Verlander because he was deemed too expensive to sign. That year, GM Kevin Towers reportedly ordered not to draft anyone "too expensive" that would normally be drafted the very first pick of the draft that year. Over the years, Kevin Towers built a reputation for building contending teams from the scrap heaps of MLB, in particular rebuilding powerful relief corps year after year and finding players "with character" generally not recognized at the top of their games. So, when Preller was hired, there was no farm system to speak of. There were a few good players but most of the organization would never make the big leagues. At the MLB level, as noted the team was mostly built from players other teams didn't want. Preller built the farm system and organization literally every way possible except for open tryouts (that I'd heard). The team actually carried Rule 5 draft players which is usually fairly rare. International players were signed and the Padres were one of the organiztions that built a training complex in the Dominican Republic. Preller showed he was willing to wheel and eal on a big scale starting with the Kemp trade, but it can probably be said that Preller hardly held on to a player "too long." Preller always preferred to trade a player before his value dropped so although the MLB team has undergone radical makeovers at least 3 times since 2014, it can be said that the organization never stopped growing in value. And as time has gone on, other GMs have been willing to trade with Preller because the Padres have traded a lot of good players to other organizations that made them better, sometimes much, much better. Yes, Preller sometimes steals a player but at least as often other organizations have been perfectly happy with what they got in return. The Padres organization should be happy with Preller's work, and Preller should be happy he has the trust of an able ownership. The two have been willing to make bold moves one after another often with considerable risk to build the organization into what it is today.
Preller acquired Chris Paddack in exchange for half a season of Fernando Rodney. Rodney was untouchable with the Padres but imploded upon being traded to the Marlins
I was a big tincap fan when I lived in Ohio and I got to see SO MANY of these future players / stars. Trea Turner, MacKenzie gore, paddock, kluber, tatis, franchy etc.
If you are criticizing Preller because you value prospect hugging, I'd implore you to check out some of those ugly Padres lineups from 2012-2017 back when they were a team best known for always having a rich farm system. Trust me, it is way more fun to have a winning team than to have a few guys in Single-A that could really develop some pop if they grow into their frame. I could spend all day listing off guys that Padres twitter were excited about in the 2010s that didn't end up doing jack squat at the pro level. Preller has been depleting and rebuilding the farm system at a rapid pace for his entire tenure. He has proven to run a great scouting operation and regularly finds quality prospects in the international pool that other teams overlook. He has also used that international scouting prowess to build the Padres into a very popular brand in places like the Dominican Republic (Tatis, Soto, Machado), South Korea (Kim), and Japan (Darvish). That builds a great revenue stream for the Padres along with trust from international players that are considering the jump to the MLB. To think he can't get the farm system back to a respectable position is foolish. He has done it 3 times now. If you don't scout to flip and get championship players, then what are you doing? You can try to win a championship or just squalor in barely above average-ness like the Brewers. As a Padres fan, it is hard to fathom how great of a job that Preller and Seidler have done building this team into a watchable and EXCITING franchise that is making money hand over fist by actually trying to win.
I know this is a bit late on this comment, but at 8:08 when you mention that Castillo was traded away and prospered elsewhere - he was actually returned to the Marlins because Colin Rea turned out to be damaged goods when the Padres traded him and hid that information, similar to the Pomeranz situation that you touched on shortly after. The Marlins decided to then trade Castillo to the Reds as part of the deal for ... Dan Straily.
His body of work is objectively a net negative but he's an interesting case study for two main points. 1) prospect capital is worthless to you if you don't have proper player dev (seems like something the padres lack) 2) less moves is more sometimes. the time and energy spent on moving mid-tier/unproven pieces lacks upside. He clearly got better at shifting focus to fewer moves that were truly splash moves Holy crap though 90%+ of the moves until 2020-2022 were absolutely disastrous. Kudos to ownership for giving him a longer leash I guess.
Preller is insane😂 traded Soto for King. Then traded for Dylan Cease and now Luis Arraez. Even if the moves aren’t always good at least he’s persistent.
So a couple of quick things since I just discovered this video 1) The Prellar suspension was for medicals related to the Marlins-Colin Rea matter; Rea had apparently been feeling discomfort in his elbow prior but no records or mention were given to the Marlins. Luis Castillo was sent back as compensation. 2) Supposedly (and I've heard this only third hand) the reason Prellar got the gig initially was because he presented the Padres ownership with both a plan to keep building for the draft and a rapid "win now" approach based off the new ownerships' desire to win and win now. That's what supposedly got him the job over Billy Eppler 3) Prellar's weak point seems to be in dealing closers/relievers but I will say that in two cases (Clase and Munoz) the padres were trading very talented but horribly inconsistent relievers. Munoz might've hurt the most as even then Pad fans knew if he ever put it together he'd be dynamit. Bednar was a surprise, I don't think he'd ever shown elite ability in any stop in the Padres farm system. 4) The thing about the 2021 collapse is that you can almost perfectly tie it to the failed Scherzer trade as reported by Rosenthal. The Padres ended up with basically nothing to help the team (Frazier wasn't a good fit, Hudson was a disaster, and that was it) after the initial excitement. This was probably also tied to the failed Hosmer/Hassell for Gallo trade with Texas. HOWEVER had they likely made those moves, Soto never would've happened. 5) I think the big thing that Prellar learnt from 2015 that he took into 2022 was not to overlook key positions or slam square pegs into round holes. Despite all the big trades the 2016 team had Clint Barmes/Alexi Amarista at SS, was forced to go with Solarte (fan favorite) at 3B after Middlebrooks failed and tried Myers at CF, which he hadn't played in years and clearly was overwhelmed at. The Padres have always been big on defense and the 2016 team was maybe the worst since 1995 - which doesn't help when pitching was your strength. Once he started rebuilding in the 2020s he refused to make the same mistake twice. Now however with Bogarts and the moves from there, it'll be interesting to see how this new OF/INF looks and works out with a gold glover in Kim moving to 2B for a weaker defense in Bogarts and of course Tatis to RF (and maybe CF over time).
Castillo never ended up on the Padres because Rea tore his UCL the next day for the Marlins and the Marlins felt like they were dealt damaged goods so they sent him back to San Diego and got back Castillo. Miami ended up trading Castillo to the Reds anyway for Dan Straily…..
do the rays next so you can see that oversight isn't all that rare. they fleeced the pirates once other than that the rays trades are pretty hit or miss

He's talked about it since ... yes he was blocked at 3B by Machado, but the Padres did consider him at 1B -- problem is more that he was blocked by *both* Machado and Hosmer. (Since they knew he was not likely to make the big league roster, keeping him at 3B in the minors heightens his prospect capital/trade value slightly over being a regular 1B.)
(As a Dodger fan) I would love to see you deconstruct the Dodgers and how they got to where they are today. I know its a mix of international, home-grown talent, trading, and free agents but I'm not sure of the specifics. Also I would like more dodger content in general lol
Like you said it's crazy they never fired him cause at times they should've but the owner let it play out and now their one of the best teams in baseball and if they can re sign Soto I can Def see them winning a world series or 2 the next decade or so
You can add All Star SS Xander Bogaerts to the list. The Padres now have perhaps the most SS in any lineup LOL (Bogaerts, Tatis, Manny, Kim and Croneworth). In fact the entire 2023 infield will be former/active SS players. Very interesting
The ty France trade was so bad also the Matt brash trade they could have had one great, and the other elite, in addition they could of had an all star first baseman.
Unfortunately this video aged terribly and now Preller is most likely going to stay and deal away due to major issues with bad contracts that preller has set for the padres, essentially handcuffing them from keeping core players in Snell, Hader, and most importantly Soto. The Hosmer deal is still biting him in the ass for another year and the catastrophe of 2023 makes the Xander deal look laughable at best. Will be really interesting to see what happens this off season
Question for the padres. How many World Series wins in the history of baseball came without at least 5 impact players (not middle relievers) from within the organization? ZERO. You cannot buy a team. You build a team and compliment with free agents. This is not basketball.
Random but Reginald Preciado became a hall of fame caliber player in my OOTP save (although not for the Cubs) so the Yu Darvish trade is an L for the Padres
Okay so to start off, I'm a Pads fan. One thing to look at, is the amount of insane talent that comes over to petco. Of those incredible ball players only a handful came over and actually did well, but no player has ever come over and improved. Also, a lot of guys leave willingly and don't have much to say about the clubhouse afterward (anything good anyways). Just this past start of the season Mike Shidlt, who didn't out right say it, but mentioned being in a clubhouse that was completely toxic (I'm paraphrasing BTW) during his career as a staff/coach, Now understand this at the time he only worked for TWO teams, Cardinals included, who does that leave? The freaking PADS. I personally think its a culture issue, and put that together with All Star egos = Bad Baseball
Preller should have been fired after he picked up Hosmer! The Padres would have been better off, IMO, if they never acquired Hosmer and they left Myers at 1st. It would have been interesting what moves may have been made after that.

Preller isn’t just a guy who is addicted to trades, he’s arguably the only GM in professional American sports who is willing to consistently make calculated risks that could potentially cost him his job. He’s like the one guy who actually cares about winning more than his own job security. Most GMs look at the Darvish/Snell/Musgrove/Nola/Clevinger/Soto trades and shy away because the guys they give away could end up becoming the next Tatis. Maybe they make 1 or 2 of those trades over the course of a decade. But Preller is able to make these trades consistently not only because he has hit on a lot of guys in trades (Profar, Grisham, Soto, Cronenworth, Alfaro, Darvish, Musgrove, Hader etc) but because he also manages to replenish the farm system way quicker than other teams. (He gave up several top prospects for Soto and still has Merrill/Campusano.)
Plus he has a penchant for finding value through waiver claims (Brad Hand/Kirby Yates) and international signings (Nick Martinez/Robert Suarez/Ha-Seong Kim/Pierce Johnson). Preller isn’t the perfect GM, but his philosophy of consolidating talent through huge trades with the confidence that the top 100 prospects he trades away will quickly be replaced by more Padres top 100 prospects is truly unique and a major competitive advantage for San Diego. This is truly the first time in my life that my favorite baseball team is actually a threat to win the World Series.
Him and AA are both geniuses when it comes to building amazing teams.

@@philthornton1382 I don't know man. As a padres fan I remember the trade happening, Colin Rea made one start for the Marlins, needed TJ and the got exchanged back for Luis Castillo who they got for him. If you look up the trade tree it looks funky.
It should also be noted how creative Preller was in building the Padres organization.
When he took over, the organization' had gone through a series of owners who were... penny pinching is a mild term. Thankfully none of them move the Padres out of town although on at least one occasion literally was all packed up in moving trucks. But, none of them were willing to make the investments to build a strong organization. In one particularly infamous draft, the Padres passed on Justin Verlander because he was deemed too expensive to sign. That year, GM Kevin Towers reportedly ordered not to draft anyone "too expensive" that would normally be drafted the very first pick of the draft that year. Over the years, Kevin Towers built a reputation for building contending teams from the scrap heaps of MLB, in particular rebuilding powerful relief corps year after year and finding players "with character" generally not recognized at the top of their games.
So, when Preller was hired, there was no farm system to speak of. There were a few good players but most of the organization would never make the big leagues. At the MLB level, as noted the team was mostly built from players other teams didn't want. Preller built the farm system and organization literally every way possible except for open tryouts (that I'd heard). The team actually carried Rule 5 draft players which is usually fairly rare. International players were signed and the Padres were one of the organiztions that built a training complex in the Dominican Republic. Preller showed he was willing to wheel and eal on a big scale starting with the Kemp trade, but it can probably be said that Preller hardly held on to a player "too long." Preller always preferred to trade a player before his value dropped so although the MLB team has undergone radical makeovers at least 3 times since 2014, it can be said that the organization never stopped growing in value. And as time has gone on, other GMs have been willing to trade with Preller because the Padres have traded a lot of good players to other organizations that made them better, sometimes much, much better. Yes, Preller sometimes steals a player but at least as often other organizations have been perfectly happy with what they got in return.
The Padres organization should be happy with Preller's work, and Preller should be happy he has the trust of an able ownership. The two have been willing to make bold moves one after another often with considerable risk to build the organization into what it is today.

Preller acquired Chris Paddack in exchange for half a season of Fernando Rodney. Rodney was untouchable with the Padres but imploded upon being traded to the Marlins

If you are criticizing Preller because you value prospect hugging, I'd implore you to check out some of those ugly Padres lineups from 2012-2017 back when they were a team best known for always having a rich farm system. Trust me, it is way more fun to have a winning team than to have a few guys in Single-A that could really develop some pop if they grow into their frame. I could spend all day listing off guys that Padres twitter were excited about in the 2010s that didn't end up doing jack squat at the pro level.
Preller has been depleting and rebuilding the farm system at a rapid pace for his entire tenure. He has proven to run a great scouting operation and regularly finds quality prospects in the international pool that other teams overlook. He has also used that international scouting prowess to build the Padres into a very popular brand in places like the Dominican Republic (Tatis, Soto, Machado), South Korea (Kim), and Japan (Darvish). That builds a great revenue stream for the Padres along with trust from international players that are considering the jump to the MLB.
To think he can't get the farm system back to a respectable position is foolish. He has done it 3 times now. If you don't scout to flip and get championship players, then what are you doing? You can try to win a championship or just squalor in barely above average-ness like the Brewers. As a Padres fan, it is hard to fathom how great of a job that Preller and Seidler have done building this team into a watchable and EXCITING franchise that is making money hand over fist by actually trying to win.

I know this is a bit late on this comment, but at 8:08 when you mention that Castillo was traded away and prospered elsewhere - he was actually returned to the Marlins because Colin Rea turned out to be damaged goods when the Padres traded him and hid that information, similar to the Pomeranz situation that you touched on shortly after.
The Marlins decided to then trade Castillo to the Reds as part of the deal for ... Dan Straily.
His body of work is objectively a net negative but he's an interesting case study for two main points.
1) prospect capital is worthless to you if you don't have proper player dev (seems like something the padres lack)
2) less moves is more sometimes. the time and energy spent on moving mid-tier/unproven pieces lacks upside. He clearly got better at shifting focus to fewer moves that were truly splash moves
Holy crap though 90%+ of the moves until 2020-2022 were absolutely disastrous. Kudos to ownership for giving him a longer leash I guess.
Preller is insane😂 traded Soto for King. Then traded for Dylan Cease and now Luis Arraez. Even if the moves aren’t always good at least he’s persistent.

So a couple of quick things since I just discovered this video
1) The Prellar suspension was for medicals related to the Marlins-Colin Rea matter; Rea had apparently been feeling discomfort in his elbow prior but no records or mention were given to the Marlins. Luis Castillo was sent back as compensation.
2) Supposedly (and I've heard this only third hand) the reason Prellar got the gig initially was because he presented the Padres ownership with both a plan to keep building for the draft and a rapid "win now" approach based off the new ownerships' desire to win and win now. That's what supposedly got him the job over Billy Eppler
3) Prellar's weak point seems to be in dealing closers/relievers but I will say that in two cases (Clase and Munoz) the padres were trading very talented but horribly inconsistent relievers. Munoz might've hurt the most as even then Pad fans knew if he ever put it together he'd be dynamit. Bednar was a surprise, I don't think he'd ever shown elite ability in any stop in the Padres farm system.
4) The thing about the 2021 collapse is that you can almost perfectly tie it to the failed Scherzer trade as reported by Rosenthal. The Padres ended up with basically nothing to help the team (Frazier wasn't a good fit, Hudson was a disaster, and that was it) after the initial excitement. This was probably also tied to the failed Hosmer/Hassell for Gallo trade with Texas. HOWEVER had they likely made those moves, Soto never would've happened.
5) I think the big thing that Prellar learnt from 2015 that he took into 2022 was not to overlook key positions or slam square pegs into round holes. Despite all the big trades the 2016 team had Clint Barmes/Alexi Amarista at SS, was forced to go with Solarte (fan favorite) at 3B after Middlebrooks failed and tried Myers at CF, which he hadn't played in years and clearly was overwhelmed at. The Padres have always been big on defense and the 2016 team was maybe the worst since 1995 - which doesn't help when pitching was your strength. Once he started rebuilding in the 2020s he refused to make the same mistake twice. Now however with Bogarts and the moves from there, it'll be interesting to see how this new OF/INF looks and works out with a gold glover in Kim moving to 2B for a weaker defense in Bogarts and of course Tatis to RF (and maybe CF over time).
Castillo never ended up on the Padres because Rea tore his UCL the next day for the Marlins and the Marlins felt like they were dealt damaged goods so they sent him back to San Diego and got back Castillo. Miami ended up trading Castillo to the Reds anyway for Dan Straily…..
do the rays next so you can see that oversight isn't all that rare. they fleeced the pirates once other than that the rays trades are pretty hit or miss

Just a small correction, at the time of the trade Ty France was a 3B/2B and was blocked by Manny Machado
He's talked about it since ... yes he was blocked at 3B by Machado, but the Padres did consider him at 1B -- problem is more that he was blocked by *both* Machado and Hosmer. (Since they knew he was not likely to make the big league roster, keeping him at 3B in the minors heightens his prospect capital/trade value slightly over being a regular 1B.)

You can add All Star SS Xander Bogaerts to the list. The Padres now have perhaps the most SS in any lineup LOL (Bogaerts, Tatis, Manny, Kim and Croneworth). In fact the entire 2023 infield will be former/active SS players. Very interesting

Unfortunately this video aged terribly and now Preller is most likely going to stay and deal away due to major issues with bad contracts that preller has set for the padres, essentially handcuffing them from keeping core players in Snell, Hader, and most importantly Soto. The Hosmer deal is still biting him in the ass for another year and the catastrophe of 2023 makes the Xander deal look laughable at best. Will be really interesting to see what happens this off season

Random but Reginald Preciado became a hall of fame caliber player in my OOTP save (although not for the Cubs) so the Yu Darvish trade is an L for the Padres

Okay so to start off, I'm a Pads fan.
One thing to look at, is the amount of insane talent that comes over to petco.
Of those incredible ball players only a handful came over and actually did well, but no player has ever come over and improved.
Also, a lot of guys leave willingly and don't have much to say about the clubhouse afterward (anything good anyways).
Just this past start of the season Mike Shidlt, who didn't out right say it, but mentioned being in a clubhouse that was completely toxic (I'm paraphrasing BTW) during his career as a staff/coach, Now understand this at the time he only worked for TWO teams, Cardinals included, who does that leave? The freaking PADS.
I personally think its a culture issue, and put that together with All Star egos = Bad Baseball
