Candy Mountain Hoedown is a tune Mark composed in the 1990s. He named it Candy Mountain Hoedown in honor of his mother, Marabeth Julander Geslison, who was born and raised in south Sevier County in central Utah. Just south of the village of Sevier is the county line between Sevier and Piute counties. At the very south end of Sevier county is a very interesting site called Big Rock Candy Mountain. The area is mineral rich with iron (jarosite, hematite, and pyrite), and potassium (alunite and kaolinite). The minerals give the mountain a very colorful look that one might think is edible like candy. The colors include red, orange, yellow, and white. If you ever drive south on Highway 89 in central Utah be sure to watch for the amazing and beautiful site that is Big Rock Candy Mountain!
