More of a Thought Slime thing to notice than a Scaredy Cats thing, admittedly, but all three movies are one big incredibly unsubtle critique of class inequality. The booing you mentioned, and indeed the entire Shadyside/Sunnyvale conflict, is wrapped up in that.

    • @Waywardpaladin
      @Waywardpaladin 3 роки тому +44

The interesting part being the vast majority of the people who are benefitting from it don't actively perpetuate it, they aren't evil cultists. But they certainly turn a blind eye and don't look into the causes because it is all working out for them...

    • @chriscze6153

I thought Fear Street, at least in the first two installments, was a pretty weak/poor representation of that class inequality. It presents it without going into any depth. It isn't great in the third either but it is handled marginally better at least. 1994 was by far my least favorite of the three, but I'm glad Matt enjoyed the third act, it was definitely the best part.

That bread slicer kill was very cool and creative, but also felt kind of unearned to me. All the violence up to that point had been pretty tame, so that level of brutality was jarring, and that character didn’t really commit any “horror sins” to deserve such a grizzly end.

The booing is more to do with the cultural divide between shady side and sunnyvale and how numb the shadysiders are especially when they know the sunnyvalers generally don't care.
But yeah I agree the first half was weak, I think it should have been marketed as a mini series rather than 3 movies though. The second film retroactively makes the first film better, and I am glad they are looking to do more stories in the fearstreet universe.

That opening just had too many songs all at once. Not saying the 70's one isn't guilty of a similar beginning, but by that point you knew the film makers were going to do it. I almost expected a collection of 1600's hits for the third.

  • @Kafka779

I personally couldn’t stand the first movie. Deena damages her relationship with Sam early on into the movie, which would be fine as a heartbroken high schooler lashing out, but the movie kinda vindicates her cruel anger toward her ex gf and Deena never really learns or grows or even reflects on any of her behavior. I did end up invested in them eventually, but that didn’t come till the later movies because the foundation of their arc left such an awful, sour taste in my mouth.
    *spoilers*
The final act of the movie also kinda fell apart for one pretty baffling reason. Before the grocery showdown, after they’ve learned the killers track Sam’s blood, Deena’s two friends and her brother paint themselves with blood to distract the killers and lead them away from Sam. Rather than finding a rag or a loose clothing item to act as a kind of red cape that they can taunt the killers with and also discard at a moments notice if things get dicey and they need to split, Deena’s friends opt to paint the blood either directly on their skin or on their skin tight blouse. They both needlessly die for it, too. Really ruined the weight of the climax, especially when we’ve been shown that these characters are learning and adapting and actually prepping and still somehow tripping up on the most obvious shit. The sequels didn’t really have any space for those characters, granted, they would have weighed the movie down imo, but their deaths were way too cheap to be actually impactful or fun for me.

    • @raven_moonshine39

YES! You hit on the exact same two things that make it hard for me to stand behind the first one. Everything else that bothered me in it were little things that I could ignore, but the way that Deena treats Sam was something I could not give them a pass on and the deaths of the friends was just...ugh. That was definitely one of those writer moments of we don't know what else to do with these characters moving forward, so now they're going to make a dumb decision that we will never address. OR they wrote Deena's speech about them at the end first and didn't know how to kill them off in a way that didn't force them to devolve.

As someone who did read like all of these books in middle school, they got the tone and spirit of the books very right. The references they put in there also worked really well (I was happy to see the cheerleader saga echoes in there, since it was my favourite).
Of the three, I think 1978 was the best movie, though it wasn’t until 1666 that I got invested in any of the relationships. Plus that one really hit home theme wise for me.

American high schoolers are perpetually aware of their own mortality. When I was a teen, there was a serial sniper in our area, and the school used a snow day to send everyone home due to bomb/serial killer threats. After a student died due to non-murder causes, his classmates made the announcement over the PA & played a bit of his favorite song in the middle of a period. All this was before school shootings really even picked up momentum. There is NO timeline in which US high schoolers (or _any_ high schooler) would not be deeply affected by one of their classmates being killed.

As you said, they're not all time great horror movies, but you can tell they cared about not just the horror aspect but also the (albeit pretty obvious) subtle message underneath. The art vs junk food thing was pause for thought - I often don't have enough free time for watching movies or shows so I make damn sure that whatever I am watching is exactly what I want to watch, and that means I am highly at risk of missing out on great stories and new perspectives because I am only looking for things I know I already like. This is why I love review channels like this one so much: the other day you were like "watch the vampire on the plane film" and I was like "I am not good with gore or high tension but I do love vampires, I think I will watch it!" and I watched something out of my comfort zone and had a good time - it's good that you took a little peak ahead on this film to say "it's okay it gets better" because now I'm like "yeah, yeah I'll watch the whole thing"
tl:dr; review channels are great and I love Mildred's insight on films I may otherwise not watch

I loved these movies SO MUCH MORE than I thought I would. I completely agree that I was bored to tears at the beginning of 1994 but by the end of it I was completely invested! The deaths in all three movies really shocked me as well, which honest to God NEVER happens with me. I think the movies did an AMAZING job building tension. And the twist!!! oh my gosh!!! I loved it so much. I usually LOATHE ~*surprise*~ twist endings because I can either see them coming from a mile away or they feel forced and come from no where. But the twist with this trilogy really felt earned and satisfying to me!! Not to mention the not-so-subtle repeating motifs alongside VERY subtle repeating motifs which made it very interesting to analyze

4:18 whereas in real life, we all know high school is a chaotic nightmare world where the kids are basically treated kind of like they're inmates who might try to escape or cause a riot at any moment, and need to be controlled with constant adult surveillance and ten million rules for where you can and can't be at any given time, and everyone is unreasonable and hostile whether they're a main character or not (because the teachers are underpaid, and the kids are sleep-deprived and worried about picking what they're going to do with the rest of their lives before their brains have even finished developing).

    *Spoilers*
I really hated this movie, honestly. The main character treated her romantic interest like shit in the beginning in a way that kind of destroyed my ability to invest in their relationship; I genuinely wanted the romantic interest to dump her and move on with her life. The romantic interest also got over her boyfriend being murdered in front of her eyes in like 30 minutes which made it even worse, and while I know her boyfriend was written as kind of an asshole, they seemed to have a stable relationship overall which made her complete disinterest in his murder really jarring.
So not being invested in the main character or her love interest, the deaths in the store showdown at the end were a really disappointing conclusion to the character arcs I actually *did* care about, with 2 of the 3 being unceremoniously killed and the 3rd seemingly just reverting back to how he started the movie, with the two characters he'd bonded with over the movie dead.

I agree, she treated her terribly, tries to push her into coming out in a small town in the 90s (not a good idea), refused to believe that maybe Sam was bisexual and not just "hiding who she is" (and how dare Sam try to move out of a town where people regularly snap and go on killing sprees!), almost murdered her when she caused that car crash, and its like she gets rewarded in the end. Deena was just an awful protagonist.

Oh wait...I remember really liking the fear street books. I'm gonna have to watch the films before I see this video.
Edit: I'm back after watching all 3. They didn't go with the original Fear St saga that I liked, but overall, I didn't mind this...I mean- obviously. I binged all of them. I think I was less impressed than Mildred with 1994 and played some solitaire on my phone through parts of 1978, but somehow became very invested in the third film. It is the most ridiculous, but also most fun. The threads all come together and the 90's nostalgia is strong without swamping it the way the third season of Stranger Things was by the 80's. Honestly, probably not high on my recommended list, but I also don't think it was a waste of time. It felt like some actual thought had been put into this, especially compared to the usual Netflix adaptations.

This trilogy really buttered my buns as a former Fear Street reader. No, it is no way representative of an actual storyline from a singular book, but I feel it was campy enough where it needed to be that it hit the R.L. Stein vibe marks. Can’t wait for the video on the second - by far my favorite. Even tho there is still uncomfortable teen sex.

It's funny because I also compared it to Riverdale, but for the opposite reason. It manages to do progressivism well without just having a handful of characters spit out clunky tumbler jargon. Like there's a real message in there and it doesn't come off as preachy or get in the way of the story which is... super heckin rare imo.

The reasons for why I didn't read Fear Street as a kid are kind of funny in hindsight now that I think about them for the first time. I read Goosebumps because those were the books written for my age group when I discovered them, around 9 or 10 years old. Fear Street was supposedly the series meant for older kids because it was scarier. However, by the time I was at the target age for Fear Street, I had already aged out of any interest in RL Stine books at all. I probably should have just read them when I was reading Goosebumps.

I did in fact read Fear Street. It does not follow the lore. It shares names, but in the original 'lore' trilogy the Fier's are the ones who burn an innocent woman at the stake. It grinds my little horror-loving 15-year-old gears that they changed it for no reason.
