It seems like she was at the end of her rope in a lot of ways...felt like that was a ticket to escape. Though, not proud her daughter was a murderer. She might've snapped a bit psychologically.

For the dog-squeamish: The good-ish news is that from what I recall you don't SEE any dogs being killed, you just see gory dead corpses (and the dogs usually don't have any screen time beforehand). So if you're like me and just don't want to see an animal actively being killed but can handle cheap corpse effects, you might be OK with it.

It's very much a pocket-money budget film, while it makes great use of it and it isn't distracting, I don't think they could have afforded a dog killing scene. It does also make a good effort of making you think you have seen more gore and violence than what actually is shown on screen.

I still feel tramitized from the opening scene with the mutilated dead dog. Sure you don't see it happen but it was still really grusome and heart breaking to see. I have to skip that scene.

This movie predicted the Richardson family murders in 2006: Jasmine Richardson, Canada's youngest serial killer , a 12 year old obsessed with goth culture, fell in love with 23 year old man who claimed to be a 300 year old werewolf. Her parents grounded her so badly, then she made plan with her boyfriend to murder them including her 8 year old brother, so they could be together forever. Today her "werewolf" boyfriend is serving a life sentence, while she's been released since 2016.

When this movie came out, I was a Canadian teen who mostly couldn’t handle horror movies (or even their trailers or covers). I was lonely, confused about my lesbian feelings, and feeing highly awkward about puberty and my body. Periods brought intense pain, nausea, and more than once i thought I would die. I also preferred to be very androgynous in my presentation and having to wear bras etc just felt like such crap. I loved loved LOVED Ginger Snaps. To me, the trope was fresh and so relatable. Just so you knows, it did become a franchise… but my enthusiasm was really just for the first. :)

As a trans girl I really related to the feeling of losing control of your own body and growing hair where you really don't want it.
I liked the second, I feel it rounded out Bridget and kind of finished the sisters story. I liked the aesthetic of it as well and I think it enabled a greater focus on the lycanthrope transformation from the perspective of the individual going through it. A lot of the horror of the 'change' in the first film was from Bridget's perspective on her sister. I think the first and second are two parts of the same story. The third one pissed me off.

I always kind of wanted a Lost Boys, The Craft, and Ginger's Snap crossover... Why?
Their teen horror films that are set in their respective eras (80s, 90s, and 2000s)
That literally re-establish older monsters for a newer generation, and used the concepts about those monsters for a coming of age story but horror themed.
Lost Boys - Is about rebellion
The Craft - Is about peer pressure
Ginger's Snap - is about change.

The particular set of metaphors surrounding adolescence at work here and the very strange, uncomfortable places the film is willing to go in its back half remind me of one of my all-time favourite pieces of media, the sadly truncated anime adaptation of Hitoshi Tomizawa's manga Alien Nine. Although the original comic goes in a fair bit deeper on the whole "through a child's eyes, adults are aliens" theme simply due to covering more ground-and boy, does it go some places-the specials constitute one of the most effective pieces of animated surreal horror I've ever seen, and at a trim hundred minutes, no less. It's a lot darker and eerier than Ginger Snaps, and even though it doesn't spell out a lot of the worst subtext, I'd still issue a hardy content warning to anyone with childhood trauma stuff going on, but I'd still highly recommend it if you're properly prepared. It's… unique. (Also, watch the Japanese version if you can; the English dub is really uneven.)

I was always fascinated with werewolves and other shapeshifters long before I knew I was trans, but for the exact opposite reasons. For me, they represented a strong desire to become something else, anything else than what I actually was. Needless to say, I didn't agree with the premise of any story that depicted werewolves as evil, murderous, or predatory. In fact, I saw it as analogous to Hollywood's queer-coding of villains, also factoring in that monsters in fiction are often allegories for the anxieties society feels towards foreigners and marginalized groups. I gravitated towards stories where the werewolf is the protector of nature, symbolizing liberation from the shackles of society, and blurring the lines between the strict binary categories of man vs. beast. I've written such stories myself.

recently ive decided to finally watch the classic horror movies ive been meaning to watch for years but was too much of a scaredy cat to do so (now i am insane over the childs play franchise), but a close friend convinced me to watch ginger snaps. and i do think its one of the Best Horror Movies Ive Seen, up there with the babadook. it isnt super expensive but it used every single dollar to make something memorable and recognizable. its rare for a movie to have all its characters be well rounded and believable people, and definitely thats a big part of why the costume and set design fucking rules. the acting is also pretty fantastic, and the script really manages a wonderful balance between teen dramedy and actual body horror and family melodrama
i dont really get why you mentioned you got the idea that there was a hint of incest, though? i felt the bond between the sisters was extremely well done and believable, but never that it reached *that* point. ginger wanted her sister to become a wolf too not out of lust or anything to me, but because of a sense of them being always themselves against the world -a codependent relationship in which ginger always established herself as the leader. yeah, i understand these sorts of relationships are usually seen as typically romantic, but i have seen it happen among siblings and friends without any romance/sexual feelings involved. its not a jennifers body situation.
also i love that wolf puppet, puppeteering is hard as hell (i know that, because i watched the behind the scenes of the childs play movies) so i have nothing but respect to the people who decided to make that thing and put all their effort into convincing us that ten minutes ago it was a teenage girl.
also thanks for that image of christopher lee with the funky shades, very needed today

Fellow Canadian here and I loved Ginger Snaps from the very first time I saw it. I think it spoke a lot more to teen girls than boys because it was the first horror movie that actually explored what it was like to be a teenaged girl and the horrors that come with it. It's intensely relatable to a lot of us, especially first periods, pains that can come with it, changes. It all feels alien and monstrous but this movie explores it in a way where it's on our side rather than disgusted by it. It's a very cathartic movie in a lot of ways. It's definitely my favourite werewolf movie.
Also yes, lacrosse is dumb and our national sport should be hockey because duh. Hated playing lacrosse in gym class.

I consider this movie to be my favorite movie of all time, from 15 years old to...now, and yet the incest subtext passed way over my head. In fact, I remember relating to this movie on, like, a spiritual level, which might have been because the humor also passed way over my head. Speaking of which, the sequel was also really good, I recommend it. I have never seen the third movie, but I have heard it's not as good (although it take places in New France, which is a setting I like.)

Thanks for the breakdown of the film's subtle themes of Canadian-ness. I would otherwise had no idea!
I hope that aspect was taken into consideration by the film rating board in order to protect our children from corrupting influences.

so happy to hear you rewatched and enjoyed ginger snaps! it's one of my all-time favourites and the one that at least consciously introduced me to the monster girl/monstrous puberty trope which is also my favourite. i constantly recommend it to people and am always shocked that it doesn't seem to be as much of a staple of millennial youth experience as it was to me. this film just feels so quintessentially MTV generation. anyway, bottom line is i love ginger snaps and love to see others embracing it! i actually dressed as ginger this halloween, coincidentally ☺️

There is a visceral seen in ginger snaps it’s the moment that changes her and you know ginger has lost her power to resist the primal beast inside her . It’s literally the moment when she snaps it is perhaps one of the best scenes ever and ranks it high on my list of favorite movies . Pure cinematic genius ! The sequel and prequel are beautiful and well thought out stories the power of the werewolf in ginger snaps back is felt at the crescendo when the wolves follow ginger into the fort ! Great movie !

I swear, I thought most Canadian teenagers (myself included) had the same experience as you did - that they watched a film and thought that it was a bit too try-hard, but it's warming to see so many people bring up in the comments how it was a formative part of their developing sexuality or interest in horror films.
    I think that's neat!
