      also used to experience replenish cold water. it was while living every single momento with lupus canis Nanà. on 29th of January (at my birthday) we went to sea and i've preferred to run with her instead of walking near that was my girlfriend.,. indeed she left me xD i was over excited and the energy was ready to feel and set free right there!
      But, when i did it alone almost one year ago without canisNanà, i suddenly felt unconfortable in cold sea water.. and was a bad experiment, indeed i found much more sensational doing it with the one we love!

    Did cold showers for about 7 months, then quit them for about a week. Started feeling sluggish and fog headed after quitting for a week, then went right back to them and feel alot more alert energetic, vibrant and driven again! My hair and skin have really improved since starting the cold showers and it feels kind of nice when my coworkers complain about a room feeling too cold I feel perfectly comfortable. My friends have also notice my confidence improving too. If you are feeling tired, depressed, fog headed, unconfident or unproductive, I would greatly recommend taking cold showers. They have made a huge difference for me.

    Cold showers start to feel so good, very pleasurable after the first 30 sec , i get used to it and crave it, then i sit in the cold water like i would in a hot shower, and enjoy the cold sensations across my back. Having long hair and getting it wet feels so good too! Sometimes after a good cold shower my skin is left tingly and feeling good, a noticeable effect, for 30 min after. Cold showers !

    About 10 months ago, a colleague of mine told me about The Iceman (Wim Hof) and I thought - what the hell - man or mouse? - I am going to try a cold shower. Normally I rise about 4 - 5 AM and it is often cold and dark. The next morning, I plucked up the courage, turned the temperature right down and went in head first. My initial feeling was HOLY @$#%^@#%^$%^$!!!! AM I CRAZY?? I even started to laugh about the ridiculous situation - self-imposed intense discomfort. Since that day, I have not taken a single warm shower by choice - the showers at my swimming pool have a fixed (warm) temperature- but that it the only exception. Even during winter, when I had a bad cold and couldn't sleep properly, I still plunged in every morning. The most intense moment is when I put my head under the cold jet. Pain and discomfort are relative - when I take my head out - I am still under the freezing water but it feels comparatively much better. I don't look forward to getting in but I feel on top of the world when I get out. The cold shock stops me worrying about petty issues and I feel completely refreshed , alert, clean, all cylinders firing. I now regard it as a "small hill" I have to climb over when I get out bed, but after that's done, I am invincible. I like to approach it with a sense of humour - it's so funny, I want dance, spin around or just put my header under and pretend it's bliss under the waterfall. After a minute, the even colder water from the underground pipes reaches the nozzle, I feel like holding up my hands are cheering! It's a kind of ecstasy. I am in charge. If you haven't already, give it try!

    Cold showers have dramatically improved my skin! My once terrible acne is at an all time low. Very minimal. Little to none. My skin and so much more vibrant. My hair, is a lot softer, shinier, and manageable. And those are my number one incentives to take cold showers. Those reasons alone, defeat all excuses to not take them. Cold showers are truly life-changing. It is no understatement.

    Kenton and Rebecca,you cease to amaze me with your videos. I actually tried cold showers 2 days before watching this (inspired by another of your videos mentioning the benefits of cold showers) and I only lasted about 10 seconds,although the next day I lasted 2-3 minutes by simple lowering the temperature in about 5-6 steps. It only took a few seconds for me to realize,"this isn't so bad,lets go colder". It is winter here and the water is only a few degrees above freezing. You made me realize that physical and mental conditioning are one of the same.
    What really amazes me about this video is that it caused me to realize something that I have never even thought to question or ever notice before: cold water sounds different than hot water.
    When Rebecca said," there is no steam,so it is a cold shower", I'm like of course it is a cold shower because it sounds like cold water...."WOHA!! wait a minute Gord,you don't know that cold water sounds different",but apparently I do and never realized it until now ). I love it when people cause me to realize things (deep things that might seem insignificant,but carry over to many aspects of life),because most of reality is hidden and I want to see (realize) all the nuances of actually reality. That is where all the (hidden)answers are,but I (inspired by you) also realized that it takes focus of the details in the moment to see it.
    I did feel "exhilarated" after the cold shower and it was exactly like you said about making the day better. After the cold shower I drove into town making it a point to focus on my senses and it was easier in this state to stay focused. I simple noticed the light turn yellow,without the usual accompanying,"damn it,there goes 2 minutes of my life waiting for it to turn green". I don't want to waste mental energy on ridiculous things like this and I am convinced that realization is the only cure to avoid it from happening. Self awareness is everything and no matter how self aware we think we are,there is always room for improvement.
    What makes me so excited is that I can already see how compounding the effects will be with increased awareness. Thanks again Kenton and Rebecca, with love,Gord

    OMG - I have been taking cold showers most of the winter months and even doing what you just did - taking a snow scrub. I have been making a mall fine outside and then doing snow walking barefoot in the yard, or snow standing barefoot and taking deep breaths. I have been gradually increasing time that that I do these activities. I love them. When it's not dangerous cold and windy, I have gone out bare chested and with only light cotton pants and flip flops. I try to stay away from the fire as long as I can and then return to warm up again and over time I have increased that time and felt so comfortable even when it was in the 20s. When we had dangerous wind chills I abated this for a time. One night it was snowing heavy large flakes. It was at night about 10:30. A light wind sent the flake swirling about.I was bare chested and decides to take a flash light and go out into the snow fall and explore out property. I was exhilarated. I did not even feel cold. I was wearing light cotton pants and duck boots this time and a little hat as I am new to this kind of adventure. I walked around our property and down to the river. What a wonderful experience. I have spent the winter embracing the cold every time I could get. I have also embarked on am ambitious working program since Jan 6th and a spartan nutrition regime, but nutrient dense. I have lost nearly 10 pounds! I found a spring out in the wood s that feeds into the marsh. I plan to visit it this early spring or sooner and take a dip. Even if it's quick, it's a start. I have because of you started to look into Wim Hoff more. I wanted to get back in touch as I have been inspired by your way of life and wanted to incorporate some of into mine. I have been very very involved in my local community's music scene an art center performing and volunteering. Recently a men's support circle has started meeting at our hone once a month. It may not be feasible to rewind like you have done but I can take steps to reclaim my wildness and find deeper connections with nature especially around me. I kept the birds fed all winter and what a great colorful crowd came. I loved them. I have also beed feeding feral cats and trying to win their trust, mostly to eventually trap them and relocate them to a local no oil shelter where they can be come accustomed to humans and hopefully get good forever homes. They are so wild looking but incredibly handsome. At present they tolerate my presence at the door and cry out when they see me. That's a good step. We have 3 indoor cats all ones I rescued and befriended. One even joins me out at my fire pit without wandering off too far. Rascal is a thick furred cat who was built for the cold. I wish blessing on your family. Safe journey, thank you, Dano Pierce South Haven, MI.

    Going to try this for a week, not as the healthier option even though that is a nice bonus but to grow stronger mentally. I had my first cold shower today, it was horrifying, I did not enjoy one bit of it but it felt awesome afterwards. :) Your videos rock dude, keep going strong!
    Edit. Day two finished.. bit easier today but my approach was different, this time I was slow going, gradually exposing my whole body to the cold water, less of a cold shock. But ya, they NEVER feel good! Awesome afterwards of course. Ima edit until I hit my week here and then I'll think of what to do then.
    Day three: I screamed my way through this shower like a champion. Very proud of myself, going strong.
    Day four: Grumpy, did not even want to shower..got even more grumpy. Hopped in and started warm, man it was nice. Ended with a 5 minutes ice cold full on shower, I feel great now.
    Day five: Motivated and full on want to take a cold shower and so I did. I now feel like a champ and the initial cold shock you get in full blast cold water wasn't so bad today, I even started to feel less cold even though it was the longest shower to date with the coldest water I can get. I am now also reluctant to put on clothes afterwards just cause I feel the heat building up..way fast. Empowered!!
    Day six: Bah blaam! Full on blast 10 minute cold shower, the cold shock is literally not there anymore, just a tiny bit. What helps me a lot is exposing my body bit by bit before going into full mode. Mentally you can almost like absorb the cold, I feel great.
    Day seven: I did not shower yesterday, went on a long hike and camped out in the woods in a storm with some pretty cold winds so I'd like to call that cold conditioning :D
    Day eight: Bah blaaaM! Nailed it! I've come to the conclusion that I will keep this up for a while, no goal set really. I actually like it and what I love the most is me not giving up and also that you feel super refreshed after a cold shower, you gain a lot of energy whilst a hot shower just drains the last energy you have..atleast for me.
    Keep fighting the urge to shower in the tropical heat comrades!!!

      Heya, now when I am done with my goal and continue with this type of stuff. I wonder, the cold conditioning part, like you shirtless out in the snow. Is there a line between healthy and you might get sick/lose too much body heat to this? I've begun to think about bringing clothes etc in a rucksack when im out in the woods and just go there in shorts with boots and socks I guess. Is there a certain amount of time I should invest in this or is something that just comes along with it? Hard formulated question maybe.. I dont know.

      I go pretty crazy with it, and seem to be in good health. Wim Hof would say the same, I think -- if you can afford his program, he'd have you doing cold conditioning every day. I am more moderate, just trying to be conscious about "dressing down" whenever I can. Just avoid frostbite, and keep the conditioning well above hypothermia level. If you do that, I think that regular thermoregulation practice will tend to do you good!

    I started taking cold showers when I lived in a hot climate, when I moved back to North America I could not stop, it became a sort of a habit. I don't like the feeling when I first get in, but I do feel great when it's over. I was taking a short cold shower before I went to bed, and it helped me go to sleep fast. Then I took a ten-minute shower - that prevented me from going to sleep readily, so now I only take the long showers in the morning. I don't know or care about all the alleged benefits, I do it for two reasons, like one person said, "If you don't have the will power to take a short 3-5 minute cold shower, what else don't you have the will power to do?" And it makes me feel so good when I get out.

      I respectfully disagree, you want a purely cold shower (colder the better) and it should last at least five full minuets. The longer you let the cold water hit your back/neck and chest the better as this is where a good portion of your brown fat is stored

      No it cant. If your body is healthy ( no diseases ) you cant get a heart attack from a 5 minute cold shower. However if the water is icecold ( 0 degrees celcius ) and you take the shower for over 15 minutes you might lose conciousness. But a 5 minute shower is totally healthy

    Your comment won't allow replies, so I hope you see this. I think for many of us, there is considerable resistance to many things in life -- a fear-based approach that closes the door to many experiences. This is kinda interesting, I often wondered how ancient man survived cold weather, and then I came across the Ice Man who climbed Everest wearing nothing but boxer shorts...so I agree, most of us do not have the ability to regulate our internal temperature efficiency enough these days. I have been doing coldish showers for awhile, because I didn't have much choice. I have to say I was singing some weird Chinese song this morning while taking one...lasted 10 minutes. -1 Oc outside (British temperature measurement), which is cold enough to freeze water. This has to be harder for people in colder climates than warmer though.

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  9 років тому +1

      TheScribe I think you must have seen Wim Hoff doing that Everest climb. He does some AMAZING stuff. With the 0 degree C outside, I honestly think that it wouldn't make much difference to you even if you were in a really cold climate. I know some people like to say that they live in places where it's really cold, so cold showers would be unbearable, but I don't feel like I feel much difference between 32 F (around 0 C) and the mornings when it's -35 F outside. Sometimes we roll in the snow when it's -10 F, and it actually feels easier than when it's 30 F, and the snow melts on you. So 0 C is awesome =) 10 minutes! That rocks! And that you feel warm for hours isn't surprising -- you're doing some kick-butt cold conditioning! =) Kenton

      ReWildUniversity I was thinking about metabolism rates and external temperature. Surely if people didn't use the central heating as much and had more cold showers their metabolism rates would increase quite dramatically. I do agree some comfort is good, but not to go over the top. 21 Oc (69.8 F) is what the average temperature is recommended indoors in the UK. But dropping this temperature to 19oC (60.8 F) the body would have to burn fuel just to maintain its core temperature of what it is used to. So for Obese people if they allowed the indoor temperature to get a little less snug than they are used to they would burn energy just keeping warm. I'm not sure if this has ever been tested either, that's the odd thing. But they should make some sort of graph of how external temperature (while doing not much) affects calorie burn. Calories aren't everything though.

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  9 років тому +1

      TheScribe
      Great points all around. I don't have studies to cite, but I do feel that the lower temps greatly affect our metabolism. It seems like one of those solutions that is right in front of us, but not seen because of our habits of defining "comfort" in a certain way. You've given some great food for thought here!
      =) Kenton

    • @JokerScribe
      @JokerScribe 9 років тому

      ReWildUniversity
      There have been some vague studies but trips to the North Pole have shown that the average man needs 8000 calories to maintain their weight, granted that they do a lot exercise too but the cold also increase their metabolic rate to 5000 calories a day (this was mentioned too on the BBC on a North Pole expedition on Top Gear) , almost double what it normally is! However, dropping the temperature down in the house isn't going to get those results but it will burn something. There should be some studies on this! Or there should be new studies made.

    • @JokerScribe
      @JokerScribe 9 років тому +1

      ReWildUniversity
      I found something, several Doctors and Astronauts use it to burn off fat but this is cold baths (or ice baths, not necessary at first even room temperature baths force the body to burn calories). One studied Michael Phelps who actually eats 12000 calories a day in nuts, cheese and the like but never puts on weight. This is because water is colder and heat is lost quicker in the water than in air the body has to burn it faster in water than in air. I saw on a video titled 'Burn Fat FAST / Cold Exposure For Fat Loss / Ice Baths and Shiver Walks or (Big Brandon Carter)' show this. Very interesting, but very difficult to do. What about starting with 10Oc (50 fahrenheit) for half an hour to an hour baths??? (too cold might lead to cramp etc) This needs to be tested on someone who is obese though.

    This is because early humans did not heat their water for bathing. People simply cleansed in a cold stream or under a waterfall. Heating the water occurred thousands of years later. So basically, our genetic makeup was built around cold water bathing, not warm.

    I started cold showering about two months ago and will keep on doing it until the day that the shock of the cold kills me, or most likely something else will see me off this mortal coil. I still have warm water showers for washing myself and my hair, but then turn off the heat for a couple of minutes at the end. My morning routine now consists of waking up and getting out of bed, go in to the kitchen and put the kettle on, then while the kettle is boiling the water for my morning coffee I go and spend some time in a cold shower. When I started this routine my cold showers lasted just long enough for me to get back to the kettle a few seconds before it boiled, but now I have to re-boil the kettle as the water has cooled down a bit after my 5 minutes of hell.
    The only negative effect of cold showering is that when people ask what you have done to suddenly improve your skin and hair condition, boost your energy levels, and have a noticeably more cheerful disposition, they tend to think that you are either lying to them or going insane when you tell them that it is all due to taking cold showers.

    You guys are awesome. A year or two ago, I started taking cold showers, both morning and evenings just because I wanted to try something new and to get my body used to the cold. I did this probably one or two weeks straight, then started skipping days without taking cold showers. soon enough, I stopped taking cold showers and started taking warm/hot showers because it was comfortable. I must admit, taking those cold showers feels great. It not only wakes you up, it's exactly like what both of you have discussed. Rag EEVE No lotion. Sometimes some raw virgin coconut oil if the skin is dry, but that might not be good for acne, though some say that its antibacterial properties can help. I've heard reports that cold showers on your face will help with acne, but I don't have any personal experience to back it up. If you try it and it helps, do let me know!
      I do know that when a student comes out to ReWildU who is dealing with acne, their complexion clears up considerably over the course of a month just from switching their diet to a whole-food, semi-paleo type diet. Lots of vegees, cut out sugar (including fruit juice), and of course stay away from processed junk like fast food or energy bars, etc.

    Hi ^^ Is it recommended to take cold showers while having a cold? I've been taking them for a few months now but every now and then when I feel sick I would take a break for a few days and return to lukewarm water. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  7 років тому

      Good question. In general, we don't take a cold shower if we're feeling sick, and if I remember correctly, Wim doesn't recommend it either. But on the flip side, I've sometimes found that if I don't take my sickness too seriously, I can often nip it in the bud. In the past that would mean if I felt a little blah, I'd go for a hard run in the woods. These days I don't get sick as much, but I'd still probably do that woods-run if I was feeling a little under the weather.

    Hi Andrew,
    I hope you see this, since your comment won't allow replies. Thanks so much for your comment here, and for sharing your experience. Awesome that after two weeks you noticed such a powerful difference! Because the benefits are both physical and psychological, you get a 'double-whammy' of benefits that seems to make a difference pretty quickly. I hope others are inspired by your story!

    I learned to appreciate this when I was a child. My dad would turn off the hot water when my time was up, and I'm stubborn so I wasn't going to let him win that easily. And I do this when I have a really bad sunburn to draw out the heat. Don't know why I haven't though to continue it in my daily life. Thanks for bringing this to my attention once again!

      Hi Elayna! From hearing from many people, it seems that different people get different benefits. However, I have heard more than once that people feel like the cold water really helps their dandruff or dry skin. I think it would be worth a try! If you do experiment, please leave another comment here and tell people what you discover!

    I took my very first 100% cold water shower tonight after reading you blog on the subject! I stayed in for about 8 min, and water was about 47 degrees f. It was definitely an eye opener and I will be using this in my daily routine! I'm going to be fishing abroad in Alaska this winter, and I have no doubt that this will be a great tool in conditioning my body for the long hours in the frigid temps! thanks for the help!!

    Thanks, I'll definitely try this out! I have one question: Are you talking about replacing all showers with cold showers or do you for example use warmer water when you wash your body with soap? I imagine warmer water to be more effective when washing with soap, but I do not know.

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  9 років тому

      Erlend Langseth Cold will actually work for most soaps, but it will take longer. So most people do their cold showers as a morning or evening ritual, and take their warm showers for cleaning.
      Thanks for asking!

    Been doing this for a few years, on and off. Can testify to the benefits! Usually tho at the end of the summer I start getting lazy about it, it's usually one hangover or sick day when my body is a bit off and I feel like...nah, not today, I need the heat, and that's the end of the season. Following your encouragement tho I restarted last week and with more determination to follow through and it's being amazing!Thanks a lot.

    Do you have an approximate temperature for the water you regularly use? Do you do this year round, including in the winter?
    My cold water is much much colder in the winter than in the summer. I don't use much heat inside during the winter, pretty much keep the heater set to 50 as that is the lowest it will go. I get a pretty good rush of cold just getting out of bed in the winter.

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  8 років тому

      +Utilize The Sun don't waste it That's great on keeping the temp low. I think that probably does more than the showers -- I notice that my students, who are living outside and have to thermoregulate daily, are better cold-conditioned than I am!
      I haven't actually taken the temp on my water, but I notice the same thing, that it's colder in winter. Our pipes run from a wind-powered well about 200 meters away, and I think that the pipe must come close enough to the surface in a few places that the outside temps affect things.
      I definitely do it in the winter -- in fact, that's when I step it up, because I'm trying to do as much cold-conditioning as possible before the really cold temps set in.

    Great video. I was a big fan of cold showers and did them regularly for a year up until i moved, and they were great in some many ways (woke me up in the morning/got me ready for sleep) My new home does'nt have a great cold water (outlet) shower so i have switched to alternating with cold water dousing and cold baths...what this still have many of the same benifits of a cold shower?

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  8 років тому

      +ilike2slug I think those cold dousings and baths are as effective if not more effective than the showers. The idea is just to allow the body to experience the "cold shock" and to come through it, just like you did back with the cold showers. Does it give you the same great feeling as the showers did?
      =) Kenton

      With the cold dousing i use a five gallon bucket which i'll leave outside a few hours or over night, the effect is maybe more shocking than a cold shower definately has that great eurphoric feeling! Also the cold baths are really good too, but it takes a lot to get used too!!! I do miss having a good cold shower though, and i would highly recommend them to anyone. I found them great for waking myself up after a nights sleep and relaxed me ready for bed in the night time And also in times of stress it can help relax your mind.

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  7 років тому +1

      You could definitely switch back and forth -- I think mixing it up can be a good thing -- sometimes hot/cold, sometimes cold only, sometimes cold ending in hot . . .

    Do you separate the cold shower from a regular hot shower for hygiene?

  • @richardlemieux7171
    @richardlemieux7171 7 років тому

    I haven't read any comments down below but my question is do you take the cold shower then have a regular shower with soap or do you soap up when taking a cold shower? This practice seem interesting to me and i think i would like to incorporate it in my life. Thanks

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  7 років тому

      Honestly, I don't usually use soap, Richard, unless I'm pretty dirty or bloody or otherwise have trouble using water to clean with. I think the alchemists called water "the universal solvent", and it really does usually do the job (even cold water) unless you're dealing with grease, etc., in which case I'll do a hot shower and use the soap.
