This was certainly an interesting show. 🙃 Overall, despite the show's many faults, I hope you were able to gain some insight into these characters, yourself, and maybe even the world around you. ❤
I am eager to hear your interpretations of the ending, the story arc, and the message of The Idol as a whole. The next series we will be reacting to is season 2 of Hulu's The Bear! Go watch season 1 if you haven't already. ☺
Thank you for watching, and as always, I am SO glad you exist.

@@svizac69 damn are you one of those people that think this show is good?? with the way you're so blatantly sexist it seems like you agree with what these writers and producers think. You can have an opinion without making allegations towards the "ultimate goal" of a woman providing her own PROFESSIONAL opinions, thoughts and insights.
      1) It makes no sense for Joss to have made up the whole abuse story. Leia and Troye Sivan's character knew that it happened and even tortured Troye's character because he didn't say anything about the abuse. Even the manager in the beginning of the series said that his mother was different to hers because his mother liked him, therefore alluding to her mother not having a "good name" (where did you even get that idea from??) that could be destroyed.
      2) abuse can lead into kinks. not all the time tho but it can happen. As Dr Courtney Tracy has stated in previous videos as well as this one, abuse or a person's upbringing or cicumtances that have happened can influence how they behave, this behaviour can represent itself sexually too. To call Tedros a dom is a gross representation of the word. From what we could see from the show, he manipulated Joss into telling him one of her traumas and used that to his advantage, or at least what he thought would be advantageous to him at the time. From what I understand, a dom likes to be in control yes but also so that the other person who is usually a sub will feel pleasure from it. Tedros only was looking out for himself and used a vulnerable woman to prey on. there are much more safer ways to do kinks than what this show portrayed. It's still abuse because Joss hasn't healed from the trauma she has experienced/is still going through.

@@Monique-dr3lb That's your opinion mam! And my is mine. I hated Tedros from the moment he showed up. It looked like that character was written for somebody super attractive and naturally dominant and then Abel took the role. He was never convincing to me. I also hated Joss from the start. Letting a stranger that she met like two nights ago slap her friend and then she fires him on the spot. There was no coming back from that. Also, I never watched one second of Euphoria btw. I checked out the show because of Suzana Son who I like. There are so many things that didn't make sense for a number of characters to do in every single episode. Even Tedros. He don't even needs Joss for anything. He appears to be the manager of five super talented people who have basically put their lives in his hands. He is also friends with one of the biggest producers in the music business. So he didn't need Joss at all if he wanted to become famous or ritch. All that sex and completelly forced nudity in every scene Joss was in was completelly unnecessary. I hated the endind and am covinced that Abel and Sam changed it just to piss of the critics.
None of what I just said (or what you said) changed the fact that your favorite shrink youtuber waits until everybody else makes their reviews, then watches them after she also watches the episodes, and then acts like she is reacting in the moment with super smart predictions. Come on. Watch the video again shenknows about thing before they happen. She already knows the twist at the end, and the pretends like she saw it much sooner when it didn't made any sense. You think that she would risk having a completely bad and wrong take. She would be laughed at. So she doesn risk it. It is just obvious to me in many parts of the video. Yes she is human a has to make a living. And yes, you are right. I shouldn't have made that remark about OF being her goal. I just dont like manipulation of any form. My senses were tingeling throughout this video so I reacted with my comment. It's called engagement. And is actually good for creator. Btw, I didn' t even dislike the video, so there. The way that she is being portrayed as the manipulator is kinda crazy. I mean imagine the victim being a sexist, manipulative, cult leader, with a god complex, who tried to steal her career from her, AND a violent criminal history. I’m sorry if anything. Jocelyn throwing him to the side is just KARMA.

I'm like 90% sure that the part of the show the weeknd and levinson rewrote is this "plot twist" of the last two episodes. They said it was too much of a "female perspective" and I'm so sure that this show was originally supposed to show how much someone like jocelyn can get abused by the industry and people in the industry but instead they wanted to make it more edgy and "interesting" by turning jocelyn into some sort of antihero. like oooh look she's not so innocent and victimy, she's manipulative too. your perspective is obviously super nuanced but I fear the majority of the audience will not see this as hurt people hurting other people but see jocelyn as the "true villain" of the show or whatever. i find this show wildly upsetting but i did thoroughly enjoy your analysis.

I think you give stuff as much depth as you yourself possess, which is maybe why the way some people see things arent as black and white, there are things shes pointed out about the show that are shitty but you gotta give credit where its due. I feel this way as actress, like lily's performance shows promise, and this show _attempts_ to deal with heavy issues which in a way is... commendable? but the writing and some other "actors" are really lacking.

@@tcrijwanachoudhury my biggest thing is I don’t feel like the writers of the show were truly attempting to tackle any of these topics, though. It jams a thousand and one complicated, sticky scenarios at the wall and doesn’t even try to resolve any of them. Just feels like randomly placed shock values scenes (that are well acted by pretty much everyone except The Weeknd) in the hopes people will latch onto something and do the hard work of the writer’s job in making it all make sense.
This is in no way directed towards the Dr. or audience though, I was desperately trying to piece things together to see if there was any way to make it make sense, just like I’m sure everyone else was and is. It’s massively disorienting that so much money, so many talented actors and producers and writers and staff, and so much backing and hype could produce something so lackluster - especially when these topics have been covered before, and better. (Think Bojack Horseman, Under the Silver Lake, Mulholland Drive, Sunset Boulevard - hell, they even reference Ibsen in the finale and that reference made me laugh at their audacity). We didn’t *need* the Sam Levinson/Weeknd take on Hollywood, and while it may have its moments where it’s funny for a second, I feel the overall show is too harmful to even want to concede that.

Movies and shows are just as much a business decision as they are creative unfortunately. This is something you gotta understand, there are SO many incredible scripts and actors but what gets the Go ahead tends to be projects that are "bankable" at the executive level, they say the studio system is dead and there is no formula but there will always be people trying to dissuade truly interesting and boundary pushes ideas and thinkers like the ones you mentioned Lynch, and "high brow" stuff like Henrik Ibsen etc. Just a few years ago and way before I was born it felt like somehow "the artists" for lack of a better word were able to fight back and negotiate, whereas now when I watch something I can _feel_ the script changes and the meddling on the part of the Studio, it's like at some point directors stopped putting up a fight and it was probably because a.) Money and b.) Money. People could afford to fight for their creativity but now unless you're independent the only way to make an ambitious film is to hand it over to the studio and you have to play by mothers rules as "harmful" as they may be.

I also think it's crazy that you skipped over the part where Jocelyn calls her label or tour manager (the guy not Nikki) where she calls him a "parental figure" after dancing provocatively and basically gave him a strip tease dance... To me that shows just how fucked up the people who run the industry are, to watch someone you consider yourself to be a parental figure to do all that in front of you and then say that out loud, is so inappropriate and is disgusting, gives off very weird vibes.

NOBODY talks about how in one of Tedros’ past relationships he held a girl hostage for three days and committed atrocious DV. I’m sorry there’s no redemption arc after that point, regardless of whatever convoluted plot they came up with.
This is also just a bad portrayal of a cult leader. There’s plenty of figures and references they could have researched to understand the trajectory of these people, and big surprise but they don’t just cave like this, drink and let some girl they were trying to control take over. Especially ones w DV records. HE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN VI🎉LENT. Where’s the smear campaigns, the blackmail, the threats… He would have done so much worse. These people are almost always psychopaths that do everything necessary to keep control. And cult followers don’t just switch up leaders like that.

Tedros snaps at the end of four and we go through a hostage situation, which ends with them taking destiny’s car and Josslyn shooting Tedros with the gun from episode 3 because Chekov’s Gun. Or, we have Tedros leave the way he did and have him come back and kill Josslyn for revenge, which will forever cement her in history as “The Idol”. I feel like Tedros can become weepy to a point, as long as he utterly 💥EXPLODES💥 and that violent past comes back. As much as I hate to say that violence against women would work, it would fit with a character who has a past of DV.

Other movies that examine the pitfalls of the entertainment industry but in more inventive ways:
*Vox Lux* (starring Natalie Portman) is an examination of a pop star who deliberately uses her trauma (in this case a mass shooting, rather than abuse) to make bank, at the cost of her personal relationships.
*Black Swan* also looked at performance, perfection, parental control and mental illness (and also stars Natalie Portman) in a way that centers the main character's fractured state of mind. It's ballet rather than pop, but since *The Idol* has dialogue about what makes capital A Art I think it still applies.
*NOPE* is a bit out there, being a sci-fi creature feature, but it has the character of Ricky Jupe to explore the idea of child stars re-using their trauma to maintain relevance and success because the industry (and the trauma) is all they know, as well as the overall connection of viewership = dehumanization = spectacle.

Hello Dr. I have a different interpretation of the ending than you. The revelation of the new hair brush was Tedrros realizing that he was being manipulated and Jocelyn wanting Tedros back in her life wasn't because she wanted to be under control but the opposite. It sort of like her relationship with Xander. He was part of her entourage forever but forbidden to be successful. When she brought Tedros on stage she told him that he was hers and told him to go stand over there. She emasculated him.

I have to say as someone who’s lost a parent who was verbally and physically abusive (at times) but still a great parent.
You really answered questions I had no idea I was going through
Jocelyn using her hairbrush to motivate her ,
When my father died I was very angry , depressed, lost, etc
I branded myself with my key at work as a way of dealing with the lost of my father.
It felt good…. It didn’t really hurt I just pushed my key in my skin far enough to the point where I could handle the pain.
Plus it was me branding myself as a sign for my father as a reminisce of considering I don’t have any tattoos and wasn’t able to get any.
I look back and I’m just in shock how I was able to do that. I was very much so numb to the situation even when I was told he died , I saw it coming from a mile away because he was a alcoholic and refused to get help
It’s just such a reality check when it’s your own parent

YESS DOCTOR omg I’ve been saying this since day one. I tweeted about it too. The new hairbrush didn’t mean that she wasn’t abused. It meant that she’s found a new abuser who motivates her, Tedros.

    • @sydneyedwards9903

    • @angelashinner
      @angelashinner 11 місяців тому +11

@@hotfudgecake because it makes absolutely ZERO sense that she was lying about the abuse. She’s been a mess the entire show as a result of losing her mother, she had no reason to fake being a mess as her career really meant the world to her. Her friends testify they also witnessed her mother abuse her, that horrible scene with Tedros beating her with the hairbrush and Xander crying his eyes our, it would make no sense why it’s such a emotionally draining event for everyone there if that abuse didn’t happen before.
Also it makes no sense that Jocelyn would let Tedros back into her life UNLESS she is indeed motivated by abuse and since her mother is gone, she only has Tedros to give her that abuse and as a result, the motivation.
I’m actually shocked at how many people so easily believed that scene meant she lied about the mother’s abuse and they even spread it all other the internet and got thousands of likes for it. We misunderstood the show sooo badly.

The way that artists and musicians has been portrayed in the show is also a bit disrespectful, we have so many great artists that didn't need to live like these people to create their art and it was actually their talent and vision.

I knew someone in the music business before the major blow out in 2002 of massive layoffs in the industry, he was an A&R guy for a Rock and Metal label that is no longer around and when he met with a buddy of mine to discuss session work for bands on their roster he said something that stuck with me "It's not about what's good or even great, It's about what sells" After I heard that I knew the music biz was worse than I could ever imagine even in the more indie side, not the major labels.

The idea of the show is a good one. It was executed very badly but it's not that the purpose of the show was not fulfilled at all. Thanks to Dr. Courtney, all of us could see and understand various kinds of trauma and abuse and the way our brain tackles it. Knowingly or unknowingly, they were able to portray many different situation of trauma and abuse.
Shows like this should be made so that people like Dr. Courtney can use it as a material to spread awareness and knowledge about the very complex psychological system that our brain has. It also helps by clarifying wrong ideas we get from various other sources.
I'm looking forward to Season 2 and hope that the makers of the show realise their mistakes and make the next season a better one.
Thank You Dr. Courtney for the insight you gave us. Instead of blatantly hating on the show you actually took time to understand it and explain it to so many of us. I'm also looking forward to watching your analysis of the next season.
It had many flaws, but I liked the show. The only part I'm frustrated for is that we have to endure Tedros for another season, which will probably have even more episodes considering the success HBO had with the pilot. Bad PR is still PR and even though a big chunk of the audience hate watched it, they did help increase viewership by manyfolds. I just hope next season the production is able to get a deserving viewership and appreciation.
