+Toni P. - Have you seen Pimpernel Smith? It's a "modern" adaptation with Leslie Howard set in WW2, where he is saving great minds from the Germans. It was one of my father's favourites and I really love it too.
I've seen that movie and I think the part where the German soldier shoots the scarecrow and the blood runs out from under his coat down his hand is rather spooky.
Thank you so much for putting Leslie Howard up. To me, he'll always be at the top of my list of great Patriots. My admiration for him as an actor is with John Wayne, Ben Johnson, Maurine O'Hara and a short list of others.
I loved this. I always find information about our past captivating. I think you have a lovely voice. To me it was the narrative voice that drew me in even more. Thank you!
Thank you Jerry for all the wonderful videos you have posted. I have loved Leslie Howard since I was young and first saw the Scarlet Pimpernel. Thanks again!
Leslie Howard was so young when he died......what a tragic death of someone so young. He certainly was a great actor and I will never forget him playing with the great Bette Davis in `Of Human Bondage`.
Thank you very much, But i am afraid they do have a point. There is nothing professional about what i do. I just go and see what is interesting to me and hope it might be to others. Thank you for being so kind. Jerry
Oh Jerry.... Never knew what happened. Iconic actor, who had a life of hurting and happiness... The glory of Heaven has him now... Thanks for another wonderful video..
Well, I thought the narrator was very enjoyable. He has a nice, clear and pleasant speaking voice. NOT that anyone's critique is necessary or warranted, for cripes sake! Also, this biography was interesting and very well done. Thank you Jerry for sharing this with us : )
Hey Jerry, My dad was from Manchester, England and served in the British Army during WW2. He told me that the reason Leslie Howard's plane was shot down was because the Germans knew that Mr. Howard had been carrying Intelligence from the points of origin to the Allied Headquarters in London. As an actor it was easy for him to explain "why" he was traveling so much. My father told me that Leslie Howard boarded the plane that was due to be shot down *knowing* that he was going to his death. That British Intelligence had already decoded the encryption the Germans had been using in their communications, and yet - in order to preserve the illusion that they had yet to receive the key components, (which they believed Mr. Howard was carrying), Mr. Howard went through with the mission knowing that he was never going to see his family again.
Paula Kaye Paula, that is a sad story. That may very well be true. I wonder if British Intelligence would even tell Howard in order to preserve their secret. Thank you for giving us something to thank about. In either case Leslie Howard would be a hero for the English cause. Thanks. Jerry
Jerry Skinner Actually, in the spirit of "fair play" they *would* have told him, obviously emphasizing that he would be seen as a hero and his family would still be provided for...
Paula Kaye Thank you Paula, It would take a lot or nerve to get on a plane that was about to be shot down. That would make him a real hero and he should get a lot more credit then he does. Thank you Paula for pointing that out. Jerry
Jerry Skinner I think he felt a deeper duty than most as having been sent home with PTSD gave him a feeling of being "less of a man", (in those days it was *never* discussed nor understood as a "real by-product of war"), so - yes - he felt compelled by those who simply *asked* him to undertake the mission, to perform it. And, no - he wasn't the kind of man who (oddly enough), sought out credit for simply "doing his job". A most unique individual - thank you for honoring him here Jerry.
Jerry,... Strait away I want to say, I had no problem understanding your narrative on Leslie Howard, and I am so glad for finding it. I was only recently made aware of Howard's activities, over and above being an actor, and I have been trying to gather as much information as I can on this heroic man. We cannot let the memories of people like him fade away.
Thank you for posting these. It is shocking to know how some of our most beloved actors left this world. Seems like alcohol and depression are high in this business and yet to see them perform you would never know it.
Thanks so much for this Jerry! Leslie Howard was a great actor, I enjoyed him in so many movies, one of my favorite actors. Loved the family pic. And I agree that you have a nice, clear and pleasant speaking voice!
You're very welcome, I love him and I love this respectful tribute. Ps don't listen to the negative comments, some people have nothing else to do, while others like you do positive things with their spare time.
Great stuff Jerry!!! I just love watching your channel...Well researched, interesting and informative...Your genuine nature and interest really comes through..As long as you keep puttin' 'em out there I'll be watchin'..All the Best
Leslie Howard excelled in everything he did, an extraordinary actor. I did know about his WWI service. Thanks for your account, Jerry. Good job, as always.
I read The Scarlet Pimpernel when I was a teenager. It was not required reading, and the teachers did not even talk about it in English Literature class. I happened to run across a copy in the school library, and the Librarian was a friend who recommended it with a smile of enjoyment. I knew then it would be a great read. Of course, years later, I saw the movie, on late night TV before political comedies became the thing, and enjoyed that rendition as well. When I saw the Pimpernel Smith movie I thought it would be good. When I saw Leslie Howard was in it I 'knew' it was going to be great. Thank you for sharing this bit of history. It is so sad that today's Entertainment representatives are so negative about our country, when their predecessors lived and died to produce great movies, both as entertainment and as 'propaganda' in support of the Free World countries.
Thank you for posting. I never knew he was killed in the war. And that young - 50 y.r. old is fairly young today. And I agree that you do a very good narration.
Hi Jerry...Just wanted to touch base with you once again and tell you that while I was listening to this piece, I caught the comments below from "14Aymara." What an unfortunate interchange! We've had some of this conversation before and I must say that I understand you perfectly! You know I'd tell you if I thought differently! You take your time throughout your narrations because you appreciate the fact that "down-home" can be difficult to understand when spoken at a person's normal cadence. She's merely throwing some sour grapes in here for some reason and as a non-native speaking person who was transplanted from who knows where, has difficulty with your accent. The problem is NOT yours...it is hers! Oh, and BTW...fine job on the correction...Keep up the fine work!
Olivia de Havilland who was Leslie's co-star wife Melanie Wilkes said he was a lovely man and seemed pre-occupied throughout the long filming of 'Gone With the Wind'. And she knew it was because he was so worried about the potential of another world war.
Yep, that is the story I heard too that though Bogart was in the role of Duke Mantee in the stage version of 'Petrified Forrest' and that the powers that be did not want him for the movie and Lesley Howard told the big shots that if they did not offer Bogart the role then he would not be in their picture either. What a beautiful act of loyalty for a friend!
+Jerry Skinner - Yep, my father always repeated this story to me also. They wanted an established "gangster," for the co-star. It had been a big hit on Broadway, and Howard said he would not do the film f they didn't use Bogart.
I'd strongly disagree with the 'significant factor' part. Most Jews did not openly fight/rebel/defy the Germans during WWII. They did not enlist as the rest of Europe (claiming it was against their religion). The lucky ones fled to North & South Americas (eg. Einstein) & some who stayed in Europe, with the help of Gentiles were hidden from societies until the end of the war. The rest, were unfortunately put in ghettos & later in concentration camps along with millions of Gentiles.
+Iwona Narcja I don't know where you get your information from, but you are surely wrong in claiming that Jews refused to enlist because it was "against their religion". It isn't, and they did. You might also find this interesting. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_resistance_in_German-occupied_Europe

I never knew this about Mr Howard, thank you so much for covering this gentleman, I only knew him from GWTW but was very fond of him because he could have been my father’s twin!
Enjoy your videos, Jerry. You sound a lot like the actor, Richard Farnsworth, one of my favorites. I had no idea that Leslie Howard was such a hero during WWII, I knew only of his screen work, so this piece was particularly interesting, and moving.

Here is that music again Jerry, the same soundtrack from the Medger Evers Bio I had asked you to identify for me, it is hauntingly beautiful and apropos for embellishing the sadness felt for the unfortunate and untimely demise of those you honor with your presentation. I still want to obtain a copy if you would please remember to ask your very talented daughter who composed it. Thank you. A admiring fan.
Jerry you have the kind of voice that Paul Harvey had, You talk slow and you announce your words. With age my hearing isn't what it use to be. Most people who talk on the UA-cam speak so fast and auctioneer would have a hard time understand them. I like listing to you and enjoy the stories you share with us. Keep up the good work.
Hmmm... Didn't know LHoward got Bogart his first gig... that alone is amazing... but... what a great actor! A charming elegant man (and no am in no way gay thanks, but always admire elegance in anyone) : the curious thing here is that at 160,227 views... there are (with mine added) so far 858 thumbs up... and 41 thumbs down... now this is not exactly a political blip... so I'm sort of curious as to why anyone would thumbs down a u-t like this?! Indeed, the only reason I thumb at all is because it seems strange that anyone would disparage a down over such a bit of interesting info concerning the dramatic arts... and the real drama of life...
Mark Winston - Don't think too much...People thumb this vid down for a very simple reason: they just DON'T LIKE IT ! Not all of us share the same tastes.
As a lazy person when it comes to YT, I can say that I often visit many videos and 'forget' to thumbs up. I can only assume that I am not the only lazy person (or forgetful) on YT. Although, I have been known to file back just so I can thumbs up. Thanks for sharing this information.
i don't understand why you would think the Germans needed any reason whatsoever to shoot down an English plane during ww2. they were after all at war with each other.
+stormbringerr mourn In his book Ronald Howard explained that the Red Cross and others used a 'safe' corridore to exchange communication as well as persons between neutral countries. The attack on Leslie's plane was unexpected.
+stormbringerr mourn Yeah, but Oblabbermouth sort of makes NAZIs look like Santa Claus... at least they tried to build up their own nation while absorbing everyone elses - Oflatulence seems hell bent to destroy this one.
Joel Lewis yes, things have changed drastically.its a mess, like constant guerrilla hit and run warfare. as long as the few have all the money and the masses have to struggle just to eat this killing will continue. i don't see it changing anytime soon, but its possible. .
I'm devoted to the work of Leslie Howard and thought I knew everything that is public knowledge of his life. However, I never read anything about him in an auto accident. His son Ronald in a book about Howard said that years after the war he met a young man who told him that as a child traveling to England he and his nurse where bumped off that airplane to make room for Leslie. Lucky kid!
Thanks Jerry, Arch Whitehouse, was a well-published author who wrote many books on WWI aviation . He claims that as an American in the British trenches circa 1915 Leslie Howard was his young officer. He claimed that one morning this young officer walked out of the trenches into the fog and disappeared towards the German trenches.
I'm impressed! There's not too much about Old Hollywood I don't know, until now! I never knew the possible theories of his death. Godspeed to you Ashley Wilkes! (Mr. Howard)
I loved Leslie Howard in "The Scarlet Pimpernel" with Merle Oberon and Raymond Massey. Wonderful movie!

Gone With The Wind was one of his best work! He is dead and long gone by now! RIP Leslie Howard!
Thank you for taking the time to tell us about the movie stars. Leslie Howard was brilliant as Ashley in Gone with the Wind. Casting perfection.
I enjoyed learning about Leslie Howard...Excellent work Jerry Skinner.

RIP, Leslie; you left a great and touching legacy in a life gone too soon.
Jerry your doing just fine - thanks for these videos , there very interesting. USMC/ Semper Fi
Prog X Prog i have plenty of respect for the USMC. Although i was in the USAF. I loved the flushey toilety. Jerry
So cool Jerry
Here is that music again Jerry, the same soundtrack from the Medger Evers Bio I had asked you to identify for me, it is hauntingly beautiful and apropos for embellishing the sadness felt for the unfortunate and untimely demise of those you honor with your presentation. I still want to obtain a copy if you would please remember to ask your very talented daughter who composed it. Thank you. A admiring fan.
AWWWH!!
THANKS -MR JERRY SKINNER.
HAVE A GOOD & PLEASANT MOVIE TIME!!!!
FROM(U.K.)
He was Gorgeous, love his films, he was a Hero, Rest in peace Leslie Howard.
Always interesting .. thank you
Jerry Skinner you do a great job with these bios.
Big fan of Leslie Howard, Sad RIP.
Thank you I love your videos so informative 😊
Jerry you have the kind of voice that Paul Harvey had, You talk slow and you announce your words. With age my hearing isn't what it use to be. Most people who talk on the UA-cam speak so fast and auctioneer would have a hard time understand them. I like listing to you and enjoy the stories you share with us. Keep up the good work.
I never knew that Leslie Howard died just weeks before I was born. I always admired him in Gone with the Wind.
Thank you Mark. Jerry
Mark Winston Suits Petrified Forest...a brilliant film at that
Mark Winston - Don't think too much...People thumb this vid down for a very simple reason: they just DON'T LIKE IT !
MissJulie2009
most attacks on planes are unexpected.it was ww2, remember Nazis ? they did unexpected things a lot.
+stormbringerr mourn
Yeah, but Oblabbermouth sort of makes NAZIs look like Santa Claus... at least they tried to build up their own nation while absorbing everyone elses - Oflatulence seems hell bent to destroy this one.
Joel Lewis
yes, things have changed drastically.its a mess, like constant guerrilla hit and run warfare. as long as the few have all the money and the masses have to struggle just to eat this killing will continue. i don't see it changing anytime soon, but its possible.
.
+stormbringerr mourn Typical Marxist/Lenin drivel.
Thank you Jerry Skinner for this moving video.Thank you for calling Leslie Howard's death what it was, murder.
victor lopez Thank you Victor. Jerry
Thank you.
excellent video thank you!
Of human bondage -- with Betty Davis and Leslie Howard this is a great movie.
Lucky kid!
this was very nice thank you...
Very interesting.
That was YOU narrating?! You sound just like Sunset Carson! -:))☺
Well done and very interesting
Love your work but why do to record the audio on only the left channel? I am deaf in my left ear.
Thank you
this was great nice photo 's of lesly n his family
and very carefully read.
note at 2:04 the correct name of the film is displayed
Marvelous actor
I'm impressed! There's not too much about Old Hollywood I don't know, until now! I never knew the possible theories of his death. Godspeed to you Ashley Wilkes! (Mr. Howard)
