I've got a real crush on him. He was gorgeous & such a good actor. His son is really attractive also, you can certainly see the resemblance. I will be getting all his films if I can.
Strange, how I'm watching this exactly 77 years to the day after Leslie Howard's death. He was an inspired actor, director, producer and writer, and he was brave in his work against the Third Reich. Truly a brilliant man. How did I happen to watch this today? Through the strange workings of the UA-cam algorithm bringing it to my homepage!
The description of “Ethereal” applied to Leslie Howard is exactly correct. I love everything about him. There was an extra quality about him. My own fiancé died at 26 years old and he also had that extra Ethereal quality about him. Something unworldly? Something deeper? Very mysterious and wonderful.
A great actor who doesn’t get the attention he deserves. Very odd that Gone With The Wind isn’t mentioned. He missed the Atlanta premiere in late 39 because he was already back in the UK. Barry Norman made some excellent film actor biographical docs in this period, made all the more interesting by the fact that he could interview many of the greats before they passed away.
He did not want to do GWTW. He was persuaded to by being promised to produce and direct Intermezzo. He did not like the part in GWTW, he never learned anything about it except his own lines. Compared to his other roles, Ashley Wilkes was not anywhere near as good.
Always thought he was genius on the big screen. Not sure how much of that was the parts he chose to play...but I can honestly say I've never disliked any movie he's been in. never knew much about his life off screen...thanks for the up load.
He was a great and patriotic Englishman. My favourite scene of his in what was otherwise (*spoiler* alert) after a bit of a melodrama on account of the ending (Pimpernel Smith) - the "You are doomed" speech 35:50.
Maybe I missed it, but this docu doesn't talk at all about his role as Ashley Wilkes. Granted, he despised the whole GWTW kerfuffle, but it seems odd that they don't mention his most-known role.
You did miss it. Barry Norman mentioned that he couldn't stand the role. Leslie only did it because he was promised the co-producer and starring roles in Intermezzo if he did.
I've often thought about how things might've turned out if he'd lived, & also known about the part, however big, or small, Pimpernel Smith played in influencing Raoul Wallenberg to save the Jews he did.
He was a fascinating fellow. There is a detailed account of Leslie Howard's life, work and demise in this book - LESLIE HOWARD: ACTOR. WRITER, SOLDIER. SPY?
Is it possible that, in addition to being a propaganda triumph, the Nazis killed Leslie Howard because he was a Jew, though it was not known generally at the time. His father was a Hungarian Jew and his mother was partly Jewish through her father.
Interesting that like Howard himself who doesnt seem to have ever talked about his Jewish heritage, neither does this documentary. When people commented that he was the quintessential Englishman, he only remarked, If they only knew I started life as a Hungarian...
I could not wait to see the life of Leslie Howard. Leslie's daughter is speaking about a scene in Gone with the Wind, after the war Scarlet go's to ask Ashly for money for taxes. Miss Howard set the scene up as "Horrible" it's not it's important to the story. Miss Howard should never inject her feelings about the story she is telling. It will taint the story. Shut Up!
I know I am replying to a three year old comment but Ingrid Bergman wasn't much of an actress. She needed good leading men a lot more than they needed her.
An excellent documentary regarding one of the finest British actors by the much missed Barry Norman; many thanks!
Leslie Howard was a lovely actor. ‘Pimpernel Smith’ is one of the greatest war films ever made.

A very fine actor. I'm so glad we have his films.
I loved him,poetic, philosophers
Art, English. Extradonary man.
Leslie Howard 's movies should be watched!

One of my favorite actors
Thank you for sharing this. He was a true English legend. The type of Englishman that no longer exists.
Smilin through was a heartbreaker. His best movie ever
He and Robert Donat were just the best
Thank you for sharing this about the wonderful Leslie Howard.
Thanks for sharing this. Howard is one of my all time favorite actors.
Omg. I love this as I LOVE Leslie! Thank you so much!
I really had never read or seen anything about him but I enjoyed his movies.
He really was the Scarlet Pimpernel :)
You squashed cabbage leaf. Brilliant.
An excellent Ashley Wilkes. Really liked him.
he was a real gentleman
Indeed, an inspiration and one of my favorite actors. The animal kingdom one of my favorite movies
But romeo character didn 't suite him,in my opinion

What a nice documentary, thank you for uploading it.
Thank you so much for sharing.
thank you for this post
Excellent work by Barry Norman. But why does Leslie Howard's son and daughter talk about the great man as though he is a stranger?
Always thought he was genius on the big screen. Not sure how much of that was the parts he chose to play...but I can honestly say I've never disliked any movie he's been in. never knew much about his life off screen...thanks for the up load.
He was much more talented, elegant and professional than his amercan colleague clark gable
One classic
He was a great and patriotic Englishman. My favourite scene of his in what was otherwise (*spoiler* alert) after a bit of a melodrama on account of the ending (Pimpernel Smith) - the "You are doomed" speech 35:50.
He died too young. The Scarlet Pimpernel is one of my favorites

I want to go see Howard in Spitfire. I like best his monologue in "Pimpernel Smith" where he reads off the SS general.
Very good film about Mitchell and the Spitfire. I think his finest hour!
@@Sunshine-nq6wv Me too
Didn't mention his part in 'Gone With The Wind.'
Gone with the Wind.
What a shame he died so early...he could work with younger and talented colleagues as irish peter o'toole, peter wyngarde and many others.damed wars
Leslie had a string of poloponies ! The Honeymooners fans will know what I am talking about.
Did american audience appreciate leslie howard 's huge talent?
I would say so. He was popular in the States
Thanks
Awesome. Glad to learn about Wilfred Israel too!
The way they all talk about his affairs. Haha
👍👍👍👍👍
As I remember, in many years ago ,read .L.Howard died during II world war at RAF. So how is true?
His son is his twin
Slavic hazel eyes but with typical british features and style

what about ronald howard ,,i want to know about him please
Interessantissimo ma, assai deplorevole che non ci sia la traduzione italiana!
E soprattutto i sottotitoli inglesi

Susan Gutrugianios 🙊
He took after prince charles a bit but mister leslie steiner looked much more stylish and charming than most of windsor family
Reminds me of prince charles , better in intermezzo
Mr Trump "your fired"!.
Why did you not say the truth about why the nazis killed him?
Oh I wonder would it could be? (here we go, drum roll....)
I just wanted to slap him silly in "Of Human Bondage." Never liked him since.
Unlike Ingrid Bergman ... His acting is far from timeless
I know I am replying to a three year old comment but Ingrid Bergman wasn't much of an actress. She needed good leading men a lot more than they needed her.
@@ricardocantoral7672 I never saw what was so wonderful about her either.

I think it was John Houseman who said," Ingrid Bergman speaks five languages and can't act in any of them." 😂
