NO ONE on tv will ever do again a skit as good as this one with these two tv legends. Gosh, how I miss those days of REAL talent even more now 54 years later.
Carson later told that he and Jack Webb could never get through this dialogue cleanly during rehearsals; they kept flubbing it. But the night they performed the skit on TV, it went without a hitch.
In other words, Carson couldn't complete the clean copper clapper comedy caper without cracking and cackling consistently and continually? That's concerning.
Jack Webb actually had some good comedic timing. Note also that Carson waits a couple of times to give the audience time to applaud Webb. Carson was clearly a class act.
I certainly have a notion to second that emotion ! Johnny always said Jack Benny was his favorite comedian. A large part of Jack's success was his timing. Johnny certainly learned well from the master !! 🙂

I have been a fan of DRAGNET for many years now, and I never knew that Jack Webb had a sense of humor. Around the same time this skit appeared, "The Jerry Lewis Show" was on prime time, and he was also on that show, alongside his main costar, Harry Morgan. They both played their roles of Friday and Gannon, this time to a Mother Goose theme. RIP, Jack.
You should have a listen to the radio play versions of Dragnet that proceeded the television version. There were several amusing running gags over the years.
We didn't watch the Jerry Lewis show - but I liked Harry Morgan on Dragnet and absolutely LOVED him on MASH - I would dearly love to see that skit as well!
