"Might as well" is a phrase that is the absolute death of me when working on cars. It always sends me into weeks of working on my car, because I always tell myself I should just do other maintenance too XD
joel also beware, I did this same job to my 2001 330ci but it was still stuttering and bogging down in the low rpm range. i found out later the inner OIL PUMP was going out. that explains the white smoke on my cold starts. smh i miss my 330ci, cuase when these cars run good its a blast to drive. frfr
Hi, I was wondering if the vanos kit is doable without a impact gun when loosening and tightening the vanos? I was planing on doing it myself but don’t have a impact
@@Rose466 Depends but usually no. If the vanos rattles and you ignore it for long it may damage the housing and you may have to source a new one, but usually they dont rattle or rattle very little. The main reason for the vanos repairs is the faulty seals BMW used back in the day. The material is called buna iirc and is not suited for an in engine environment. Therefore it degraded very shortly after these cars were new and nobody notices the loss of power because everybody that buys these cars now never experienced them new. Damaged vanos seals make the vanos"not work" and symptoms are loss of torque, especially down low, fuel economy and driveability.
joel ive been turboing my obd1 m50 and it all started because I've been watching your m50 build for so fucking long, I've been battling with a starting issue for the last 2 months after it took me another 2 months just to put everything in, doing it all solo at 20 years old I got a shit ton to learn but I've already ripped on it a couple times and it sounds INSANE. haven't been able to drive it daily like for a while and this video just makes me miss NA LIFE
So glad you finally changed the vanos seals! Makes the biggest difference. Long intake tube into fog light also improves power & torque slightly which should help with drifting
Use butyl tape to seal the headlights cover. Another item to check if you did plugged up the tiny nipple on the ccv. Not used in M54. It's a vacuum hose fitting for older M52 engine. Shud have changed the plastic coolant pipe running across the side of the engine as well when you had the manifold out. It runs from 1st cylinder to the heater element in firewall. Does Crack with age and lose your coolant.
One thing I've learnt with my 2 e46 is that you should stay OEM when possible. OE stuff is junk, especially on CCV. There are some exceptions with nissens, vdo, bosch, and some more but it's because they are the original manufacturer of some parts.
Next time just break the ccv hose off to make it easier to remove. You’re replacing it all anyway. The DISA pin cannot fall into the intake while installed. It fits into a small pocket in the manifold and there is just no room for it to fall out unless there is catastrophic damage to the DISA itself. I’d venture to guess that anyone that has had one fall out, happened while either removing or installing the DISA valve itself. A simple ruler proves it has no room to fall out when installed. Also, the original DISA “oring” is kind of a formed gasket. Not an oring at all and is why it was so hard to remove. Great work today. Hopefully the cheap parts don’t bite ya in the butt!
41:52 The gasket at the throat of the DISA valve is molded in from the factory, it's not an O-ring. It has to be scraped completely out and then a replacement o-ring goes back into the channel.
Also, you should have checked to make sure that the flapper was spinning freely and that it was actually holding vacuum. The DISA on my 325xiT was failing and nearly dropped the pin into the intake. I bought the GAS rebuild kit and rebuilt it before testing the vacuum, and then realized that the internal diaphragm was no good. Had to go find a better condition unit at the junkyard and then I rebuilt that new junkyard unit with the kit because it had good vacuum.
Sucks you did not do the plastic coolant pipes while you were there. Just did this job 6 months ago on my E46. Rebuilding the starter is also a good idea while you are there.
Your CCV hose that goes to the valve cover is upside down. You also can reset your adaptations in the computer so it can relearn with everything working properly now.
you should definitely do the disa if you're already spending time with preventative maintenance or it might grenade your engine. but yours looks to be aftermarket so make sure your kit is compatible with aem as well
Same issue for the lenses on my facelift sedan. We're a year later and no issues tho, no yellowing and haven't had issues with moisture either, although it's definitely not sealed mine literally has a 3mm gap before the plastic hits the seal.
You should definitely do the disa repair. That pin falls out into your engine and totals your engine. And do a real repair. Get the kit from GAS. German auto solutions disa upgrade kit. Comes with billet flap and bolt instead of plastic stuff that fails
I'm fairly sure that disa valve gasket wasn't actually an oring from factory. Looks baked on there even in brand new oem pics. Plus look at that orange line going up the part that holds the flap, same material.
You are gonna wished you got an oem ccv, the Amazon ones are terrible, been there done that 😂😂 I bought just the ccv from bmw and then got pipes etc with a cheap cold climate kit.
Yo! Does anyone else ever have that squeeking noise when starting there car every once in a while? At 43:50.. I have an s52 in my m3 and every once in a while it will squeak like that until it warms up. Appreciate anyone that has any input!
@@jimmylowe6882 lucky. I'm stuck with a xi sedan and im having trouble with the front subframe difference. I can't find a single video that actually shows what the difference is
aint watched ya vid (*all the way yet*), but the "amazon" ccv is TRASH. ended up having to go to fcpeuro and getting an entire new one. *(smoke test the car)* after the new stuff... am curious to what rear diff your running... may end up doing my vanos at 163k miles.
like to add, the amazon kit i had didnt fit quite right on a 3.0, not to mention how cheaply made it is.... but for 40 bucks i couldnt expect much i guess, replaced the shit a week later with FCP kit... the ccv cyclone itself is fine tho, (and that foam) is 70 bucks or more. 100% should KEEP IT bc cold weather package is expensive af on these compared to the non cold counterparts. I have a question where did you get all of the O-Rings that you changed in the video because this makes me want to do all of this to my 330i ZHP thank you for showing the entire process in detail 🙏🫡
that flopping intake gasket at 38:44 had me worried.
Yeah... i see that too, i hope that he noticed.
Same here, stressful stuf.
I went straight to the comments after noticing this
Here for the same thing lmao
Same 😮

I’d recommend getting the upgraded disa valve as the plastic ones tend to break and send a pin into your cylinders

What's the inner oil pump, is it different to the one in the oil pan gasket? What about it was going out? Cheers
Always love these type of video Joel, alot of thing packed into a longer episode than 10 smaller videos for every part
I've done the vanos repair multiple times already. It always amazes me how much of a difference it makes when i drive the car afterwards :)
Hi, I was wondering if the vanos kit is doable without a impact gun when loosening and tightening the vanos? I was planing on doing it myself but don’t have a impact
@Rose466 I tried it without the impact once and it didnt work :/ but you can change the seals without installing the anti rattle kit.
@@DailyDrivenClasssics but isn’t the hole point of the kit the anti rattle?

the ccv hose that goes to the valve cover you installed backwards, hence why it didnt fit

fun fact the disa o-ring that you replaced didnt melt they are originally molded on to the disa from factory on the m54!
