Should get my white 12/256 model in a few weeks. I’m just so excited for that screen with those sticks. Those sticks are the ayn killer. I have an Odin 2 pro and it’s a great device held back from being great by crap analog sticks.
Yeah I've heard that from a few people, I'm not as sensitive to it, but I also didn't detect any in this one. You have enough power to do runahead in retroarch on either device, which is nice to have in a pinch.
Glad to hear about the speakers. Your review has solidified my decision to keep my pre order. Some software improvements from aya should hopefully fix the compatibility issues and maybe there will be an easy dpad mod to fix the loose dpad (though no device over $50 should require mods to fix basic inputs). Great review, thanks for putting the work in for this one!
Gotta say the nearly directly above/below placement for the right thumbstick and d pad seems like a big mistake for me. Reminds me a lot of the switch nitro deck, which was terribly uncomfortable. What are your thoughts after the hands on?
Comedy gold with the case being thrown! Love this video as usual and might have to actually get this one now since I passed and went with the Ayn Portal....
The production values were very high in this video. I enjoyed all the silly little inserts and digressions. Those made this fun. So many videos are both long and as dry as a Thanksgiving turkey. I can't enjoy that. Stubbs' videos are fun while still being serious when it matters. This was a half hour long video that felt like ten minutes, maybe. Time flies when you're having fun and when Stubbs is on camera even Scrooge is going to be feeling pretty good. Yesterday I watched Klef's review of the Pocket S. He had issues with the sticks being horribly imprecise, the d-pad being floaty, the triggers having too short of a throw, and the fact that his test model had an okay LCD instead of a great OLED. It would appear that, other than the D-pad, with the EVO our friends at AYANEO have fixed everything wrong with the S. I legit really like what I'm seeing... Except for the game incompatibility thing. What is that all about? Stubbs said at the end of the video, "Just get a Steam Deck, bro." Boo that man! Boo him loudly! Boooooo! Seriously though; one of the reasons that I want a fancy Android handheld is because I have a preexisting large paid Google Play library. I don't have a Steam library so if I bought a Deck I'd have to rebuy everything. Meanwhile, there's enough compelling new single player premium content being released on Android that I don't feel the need to switch teams. Fundamentally, I just want to do higher end emulation and play Android games on an Android that's better than the phone I've got. The fact that this isn't guaranteed with the EVO is the biggest hurdle for me actually buying one. I like everything that I'm seeing here. The hardware on offer is incredible. It's just the not knowing how many and which "essential" Android games that aren't going to work that bugs me.

I'm still sticking with my Odin 2 Portal preorder. I've always heard about little small issues with Ayaneo like software and other things. And that horrible start and select placement is bugging me more and more. Until they really improve I'm not bothering getting anything from them. Maybe down the line but not anytime soon
@strongbad79 just for clarity the micro controller issue is due to how they have the controller set up on the micro, its setup differently on the S and Evo.

definitely prefer the AYN odin 2 portal over the AYANEO pocket evo for a few main reasons. better driver/game compatibility with the snapdragon 8 gen 2 over the G3x gen 2, much lighter body (430g vs 480g), more reliable software and support from AYN over AYANEO, and $100 cheaper for the base model. has the exact same panel & is apparently tuned slightly better.
I cannot tell any difference personally, but here's what LG says about it: Durability An important difference between AMOLED and OLED is that OLED displays generally last longer than AMOLED displays. AMOLED's faster energy transfer can wear down the hardware more quickly. Energy Efficiency OLED displays tend to be more energy-efficient compared to AMOLED displays, which can consume more power, especially during high-performance tasks like gaming. I'm excited for this I can't wait to get my hands on. I got the lowest variant in white just so I can stream games. I figured I don't need much ram and memory for just streaming through steam link / moonlight :)
+ Full size sticks + better ergonomics + bigger battery - worse dpad - down firing speakers - smaller buttons - slightly more expensive - alternative color option is more expensive Did I get that right?
Sounds like he really liked the audio quality despite downfiring. And I’m not sure the buttons are smaller (assume you’re comparing to Odin 2 Portal). Probably right for the rest of the points..
@@bassderek You're right about the speakers, I do think the buttons are smaller than the portal. The bigger sticks might be the most important, and the faster screen could mean lower input lag.
I know that I'm not in the majority... But I'm not the biggest fan of Ayn Dpad. To small, to stiff. Not that good for fighting games in my experience. I always prefer rubber membrane dpad like the ones used by anbernic. When I heard that the Dpad is a little loose i instantly thought it was an upgrade. The ergonomics when using the dpad, the speakers quality, the screen quality and overall performance with this chip is the thing I'm more interested in. I want a comparison vs Odin 2 portal. Device spoofing will be needed because this Soc is not mainstream despite being more powerful. .. or just hope that those games and apps add support for it. Turnip drivers for Adreno A32 supposedly are available since v24.
I was doubting between this and the Portal. Decided to back the EVO in the end. It has a faster chip, the joysticks are full size(!), the ergonomics are probably better and to me the Portal just looks 'weird' in comparison... The slight price bump is worth it imo.
I think these both the pocket evo and the ayn o2 portal are a bit too big for an android device and getting way too close to an x86 device in price, specially this one if you want the extra ram. I decided to go for the Ayn Odin 2 mini cause the pocketable form factor is what I really like for a retro device. this looks more like a beautiful streaming device for my pc but at the same time I'd snatch a Steam Deck oled for a couple extra bucks. the 2 mini and the ayaneo dmg are a more compelling choice for my needs even if this one looks premium AF.
I generally agree with you and have been making that same argument. I did order the Portal though, based on impressions that show it's not THAT much bigger than a standard Odin 2, but with a slight bump in size, you get a bigger, better screen and better ergonomics. So it seems worth the trade-off.
@ so ally x ? Don’t get me wrong I think this device looks amazing but at that price you might as well go with something that can emulate everything possible & play pc games you won’t even need GeForce now unless you want to play brand new games.
@ there is no other device with oled 120+ hz. Winlator or valve Linux soon will change a lot in android market. I have allready legion go, this device is also good. Will be great with legion go to have arm and x86.
So is the best solution then to use something like the Aileron, where you can get left joystick movement and ADS but right aiming with the touchscreen?
I have a question for AYANEO: Why? Either make something linux/windows with these awesome ARM chipsets or stop wasting time with a dead platform, nobody is developing anything interesting for Android. Whoever owns an Odin2/RP4P or similar won't need this overpriced handheld at all.

the reason why some android game doesn't work is android game are verified pre devices, so that why ayaneo give you an option to spoof your devices
how can retro handheld or android more price than pc handheld ?
On the plus side, it's not as expensive as an aluminum monitor stand from Apple, so there's that. 🤔
+ Full size sticks
+ better ergonomics
+ bigger battery
- worse dpad
- down firing speakers
- smaller buttons
- slightly more expensive
- alternative color option is more expensive
Did I get that right?
Sounds like he really liked the audio quality despite downfiring. And I’m not sure the buttons are smaller (assume you’re comparing to Odin 2 Portal). Probably right for the rest of the points..
@@bassderek You're right about the speakers, I do think the buttons are smaller than the portal. The bigger sticks might be the most important, and the faster screen could mean lower input lag.
@@HPPrintervx4p5qno input lag detected, and Derek's correct that I like the speakers even though down firing. Nailed it!
@RAIKON80 i think you'll enjoy the Evo then. I have a Portal comparison vid coming out shortly
Looks great
Does it have ssd 🤔
Baller 🎉
Cant wait for my black 256 gb model. this and my white rp5 is it! Im getting rid of my other devices
Nice choices!! Hope you enjoy them!
I'll wait until handheld device with SD 8 Elite
Let's gooo
Heyoooo
Love your face ❤❤❤
Pls chech PWM on this display if it doesn’t cause headaches
No PWM detected
I was doubting between this and the Portal. Decided to back the EVO in the end. It has a faster chip, the joysticks are full size(!), the ergonomics are probably better and to me the Portal just looks 'weird' in comparison... The slight price bump is worth it imo.
You can change a lot of those things afterwards by buying extras. Ayaneo doesn't have good reputation and software issues it seems...
1:37 That case is sexy, I had to rewind the video just for that case. 😳
ykk is the zipper brand.
Ohhhh ok that makes sense, thanks!
So it seems worth the trade-off.
yeah im gonna need you to send that to me for .... testing purposes....
😂❤
Can you get a room already with that SD card cover....
🤣🤣🤣
This destroys the RP5. So glad I preordered this and the Odin Portal.
And a Ferrari destroys a Subaru BRZ (on a race track, anyway). So what? They're not competing in the same category.
Hey I was going to order either one portal or Evo and reason to get both?
I went with the portal
Pls test PWM on this device
At 22 seconds in... Definitely 1st 😂
2:10 🤣🤣
Sadly, Steam Deck still has a weak D-pad, lol. 🤦🏻♂️😅
No headphone jack????????
I love some of these devices but at this price point why not just go for a steam deck or ally x. Idk 🤷♂️ maybe it’s just me.
For example on steam deck you can’t play on GeForce now in 120fps
@ so ally x ? Don’t get me wrong I think this device looks amazing but at that price you might as well go with something that can emulate everything possible & play pc games you won’t even need GeForce now unless you want to play brand new games.
@ there is no other device with oled 120+ hz. Winlator or valve Linux soon will change a lot in android market. I have allready legion go, this device is also good. Will be great with legion go to have arm and x86.
Look just buy the Ayaneo dmg you know you like it pal
The pricing is bit ridiculous. But i HATE Ayn's joysticks. Now I'm torn
Ayaneo has great devices, but don't carry them on the plane, my battery in Ayaneo 2 was swollen very badly,be earful!!!
To expensive for me instead I got rog
$700
Finally
does it play fortntie
I enjoyed it though GeForce Now
Too much money.... I feel like when they get to a certain point its steam deck time, or high end phone/tablet...
@@digitalmagik very much!
I wish I can play COD mobile on steam deck
Id rather just buy a steam deck at the price
2 small
The right thumb stick needs to be closer to the screen. C'on man, this is Kindergarten stuff at this point.
Eh I found it pretty comfy where it is for my thumbs (note that my right thumb is shorter than my left though haha)
I will never understand why android fps players want to use controllers when touch screen aim is halfway to using a mouse
@@dutton2666 ill have to practice!
So is the best solution then to use something like the Aileron, where you can get left joystick movement and ADS but right aiming with the touchscreen?
That sd card cover is getting snapped off within 24 hrs lmfao
@@Skylance19 so satisfying in the meantime 🤣
I have a question for AYANEO: Why? Either make something linux/windows with these awesome ARM chipsets or stop wasting time with a dead platform, nobody is developing anything interesting for Android. Whoever owns an Odin2/RP4P or similar won't need this overpriced handheld at all.
They have windows handheld and soon ayaneo 3
@@WaldekA-el3gu I meant on ARM.
Better? probably but at those prices I could buy a steam deck rofl
Just not good. The sound is completely horrible in it. Odin 2 wins in every way
