They fail because lack of originality. They come up with one good piece that has people attention, but after that they just get boring quick. When 90% of streetwear is trash in quality, you at least need to come up with interesting designs otherwise no one will buy your clothes.
As a musician whos parents are musicians, who knows and was taught by musicians who had lived their whole life in the industry i can tell you that music business is 90% business 10% music. This SAME EXACT premise is relevant in any of the arts. Its all about your branding, not the art. How do you think alec Monopoly gets away with his paintings, or supreme with their designs. It is not their raw skill or even the quality of their product that makes them sell for far beyond its worth. It is the business mentality of who runs it, and the branding, name recognition, celebrity influence (think hype and iconicism), and in fact the overpricing of the item that makes it boom.
The real mvp not necessarily, consistency and great marketing will take a “SUPPLY CO” a long way. Its about who is in it for the marathon not for a quick buck.
I hit the link too... I bought a shirt from KITH last week for $1.00 less. I do like the difference but - you have to build that brand before you start charging people that kind of money... Maybe they don't. IMO
I started my first streetwear brand in 2015 sold a few T-shirt’s here and there then me and my parents stopped doing it for lack of motivation, keep in mind we had not thought about the brand in a business way, like getting LLC , trademark etc. A year went buy and I start another one by myself, I had the knowledge of how screen printing, sewing, graphic designing worked but still did not have the knowledge of a business, I sold few shirt here and there but again lack of motivation stopped me for going further, I really liked that brand but it was too much like me, in other words I was designing for me and not for an audience, In mids 2017 I took a course on business management, marketing and I took a break to study the top brands and designers to have a better understanding on people they were targeting, So now going into 2018 I’m pretty confident and know everything from every single type of blank T-shirt to almost every single type of fabric to do cut and sew, also thru out those 3 years of experimenting I learned A LOT of stuff I don’t know and that has help me a lot this time, I regained the idea of starting another brand this coming up year , and I already started working on a business plan , marketing plan , the amount of money I will have to spend to lunch it , and the amount of money I will have in profit , taxes in USA are very important too, this is a business and little things that you learn thru out the years finally collide together and soon you realize that without those experiences you wouldn’t be were you are right now, so the key is HUNGER AND PATIENCE,
Hey something interesting about the design aspect. I am myself owning a brand, and the design is very much like you said, to please myself. Should I make things simpler? Cos my coworker called me perfectionist. I don’t know if this just my keen to details or just me being ridiculous. Much thanks b4.
Salient points made Reggie. The bulk of upcoming brands that fail don't have love. Like you said, they lack passion. Love begat passion. They don't love the process. They don't love the craft. They are too busy focused on the highs being the owner of a streetwear brand gives. Love is necessary for progress. Love commands the added effort. It enables a person go the extra mile
I think most brands fail, not because of lack of marketing or business planning, but lack of co-signs. Almost every brands that people buy “for the brand name”, has artists or celebrities closely attached...So it appears to be a matter of being “in the club”, rather than merit that proves success.
Okay. Seriously last comment: I just got to the end of the video. I think the main things street brands get wrong is that they don’t know what branding really means. They just think slapping a logo on a shirt is a brand. In fact most marketers don’t know what a brand mean. A brand is a suppose to represent a story or idea. A lot of people slap a logo on a product
i started my brand in march and i’ve been doing everything myself. it’s been a hell of a ride but i’ve actually gained a little bit of success in my city, even selling to a couple different states as well. i guess you just have to be really dedicated if you want to do it, and that’s why it’s been working for me i’d say.
I see sooooooo many pop up, and sometimes they charge too much. They say it’s to create a premium for their brand, but the truth is they don’t create a value beyond the price. No attempt at a good color palette, interesting design or logo. I saw a indie brand tie dye yesterday that charged $100 for a very basic shirt. The quality was Target. On the other hand, it made me develop a finer palette for materials and color schemes.
Love this video!!! I'm currently in the early steps to educating my self on how to make my own brand and everything about the industry. Staring Young (age 17) but I want to grind already because school is so boring and holding me back, I truly feel like this is the path to take. Thanks The Casual!!!
Real talk brother most brands fail because of the lack of business strategy also they just do things and hope that it would work out but to gain success there has to be a method behind the madness.
Dropping bombs 💣 The biggest mistake I did with multiple brands was trying to be a “perfectionist” it’s not ready yet. You just have to take action sometimes
I noticed a lot of startups now have a huge center on graphic design, and what I mean by that is it’s usually artists taking their art and putting it on a gildan shirt in square format. Nothing wrong with it, at least it’s original artwork, but I wish there was a little more creativity into how the artwork blends onto a shirt. And then you have startup instagram brands that take Aliexpress designs and mark them up to resell. 😂
A good place to get noticed is at markets, not like farmers markets of course, although you would standout a lot at a farmers market. basically make some stuff, get a stall, and see how it goes.
Big dreams require lots of work and planing. I don't get why it's so hard to understand for so many people. If you want to be an entrepreneur you have to get everything right and even do something extra, something better your competition hasn't done!
Most repeatable mistake we see is that brands forget that your clothing line is the uniform your community wears. Without a community is far less sustainable. ALSO when new brands start off with an "I can do this by myself" mentality.
There's too many generic labels, that claim to be streetwear, even though they're doing the same thing as everyone else. Streetwear is rooted in individuality and the expression of it but what people call streetwear now isn't authentic. We need more upcyclers actually doing creative things with clothes! #lolawolfsustainability
I thought this was gonna be discouraging but I actually run a business right now and I know what all of this is. Work ethic is definitely #1 key to success. Also, you have to know how to learn new skills. You can have a great work ethic but you have to do the right kind of work. Like learning the ins and outs of clothing design, manufacturing, sourcing, etc. is a lot of WORK! If you made some tshirts and just sold them on the street for 10hrs a day I don’t think that your business is going grow very fast.
Some Good Info on this video right here. My friend and I just started a Brand this year KHRUMS. What's crazy is we procrastinated for 5 years. Better late than Never right? lol... What's so dope is the positive feedback we've been getting even during this Pandemic. We are actually doing better than what we thought.
One of the biggest mistakes are delegation. A lot of people feel as though they can do it themselves. Interdependence is where it's at and that's where I failed, but this channel is giving me much more motivation and that spark I needed again. Thank you Regg!
Great video man. I've been watching your content for a few weeks now. Solid content. I'm an aspiring street wear visionary, LOL. Aspiring since 1995. LOL. I think it's about time I stopped taking notes and drop a nice capsule. Quick question. I'm just curious, what is your take on the "distressed" style clothing? Is it evident in Japan???
Hey I’m still learning too but I figured I’d answer with what I do know! This comment is old and idk if you’ve launched or didn’t or what but I’ll still answer. I would say yes. Just like clothing brands there are a million other jewelry brands. And from what I’ve noticed from big and small jewelers is that creativity and quality win. Every jewelry is doing cuban link chains and bracelets and what not. But when you create a watch or a pendant that is super creative and has quality it gets talked about. Avianne recently made an iced out watch that had a snake curled around the watch face and then wrapped around the band of the watch. It also had variation of the colors and stones. Stuff like that stands out. Just like creating unique graphics or silhouettes in a streetwear brand get talked about. So I would research research research and use maximum creativity to really get it going
They are not original, they just put the brand name on it and make their items high quality. The thing I am missing is some unique design and character in alot of new brands
New Exit if i’m being honest, your prices are pretty high and i’ve seen a lot similar to your designs. Don’t know if the materials are high quality which makes it more expensive but i don’t really see what’s making you stand out from these other brands. But i will say your jackets, name/logo are pretty cool.
Two Years in and im still at it see quality instead of quantity and focusing on a particular target audience the ultimate thing @Bigdreams_clothing numbers dont matter as much as being original and quality
Hey man, love your videos! I was wondering, which undergrad degrees, if any, are useful in starting a brand... I have no artistic inclination so anything besides design/drawing is what i would be considering but i dont know whats good and whats not
bob smith i got degree in business management, and it’s hell useful. I’m pairing up with my pal, she’s designer and now we’re collecting the capital necessary for our brand :)
thankyou for the response! Do you think that is more useful than say, a marketing degree? or would u suggest any other degrees that would be more helpful?
Actually it’s not the degree I find useful, the classes I attended and the professors are. And I would say each uni/college have certain inclination to a certain profession, eg my major is to fit everyone into corporate worker than entrepreneurs, then my minor is to shape ppl into stockbroker than investment manager. I was frustrated with this til I’m in final year with entrepreneurship class and met with this amazing professor. Then I met regularly with him outside the class and asked him to mentor me. Of course not everyone the same, but that’s my story anyway. But to answer your question anyway, I guess there is a lot of degree for if you specifically want to build a brand, like fashion management, luxury brand management, entrepreneurship, etc. And you must see the degrees programs, aims, and syllabus, would it match your interest and so on.
Dude, I'm not a street wear designer but I love your common sense approach to business in this crazy fashion biz, it's true across the board no matter what you are designing the work from front to back has got to be there. As an artist we dump our soul into our craft, it is hard to see beyond that, but the world is flooded with so much new shit all the time that the stuff you created this week is gone by next, we got to be ready to go the distance and find what works and ride each wave. Thanks for this video.
reggie whats your opinion on the trash ass yeezys that just dropped and address if these items are literally marketed for resellers cause i rarely see true fans of the brands getting a fair chance at copping their favorite shoes
How about talking to the community you're addressing with 3D models before manufacturing. Shows how many are interested and you won't have to deal with products not selling. Thought about this for a while now.
Thats what im saying come up with some designs, make some 3d models, selcet your target audience and see how manny people are willing to buy your clothes. Then print them if enough revenue comes out.
I'm in the screen printing & embroidery business and I have my own brand (outcome threads.com). I print for many other brands that wither away within 6 months due to quality, price, no originality, lack of marketing....thinking Facebook will get them somewhere. Consistency is the key, and please don't walk into my office wanting to start a brand and start off with the words "I don't know...I just want to do shirt"...
Be selective with who you put into your creative/business team. Because of familiarity, you may easily want to pair up with friends. Everybody is cool with each other and are all buddy buddy but that may not translate well to productivity or capability. Choose people who can carry their weight and have distinct talents (website bulding, social media maintenance, supply chain connections, etc), plus have some sort of work ethic and drive. If you gotta give someone the boot, kick em to the curb bc at the end of day its 11:59 pm, but also it's all gonna fall on your shoulders whenever things go wrong
Its all timing and who you know i came out with the 1st LA graff line called Fatcap in the early 90s and sold it to japan before the game was flooded with bullshit and when you can get top dollar overseas no they dont pay shit
Last comment. It’s clear you was a business major in college and this is why you don’t know what it take to run a business. School only teach you %10 of business the rest you have to learn from experience.
@THE CASUAL Yeah, but where do I find those people that are willing to 'help me out'? I mean, I can not really even pay myself 'properly' yet......( I am a Graphic Designer and, for example, could use someone helping me out with finance)
Kinda new here...lol but i know one mistake we as small brands make is to follow trends ... TRENDS can and more often drops us off in spaces that we cannot recoup from. Example- the sublimation trend - for a while there we couldn't figure out which brand was which due to the sublimation. We were standing in a club full of people - we could not tell which brand was which... All we knew was that we as a brand did not have enough money to sublimate our clothing.. and we did not want to look like everything else at the time... had we followed that trend we would have lost our identity along with the others that are not around anymore. Just my 2 cents... stay away from trends less those rare moment where great pool of fashion mentals link and find the same inspiration simultaneously - I know i am not the only one who has designed something and go to a show and see you were on the right track all along because another brand with your ideas. Let me know how we are doing with our brand! www.TheBenjaminBrothers.com
Casual I been collecting vintage fashion clothing and not just t shirts . But all year fashion for mens and starting to build up my vintage ladies collection . I would be kool if I can send you all my clothing for us to partner up on a store like Chicago vintage store in Japan. It's my dream to be a edition to all the great pop up shop out there. I'm over loaded with crazy cloths ton it'll fill up a store easily. God Bless you tube I found you and enjoy watch you teach us about the Japan culture . Thank you
5:18 I’ve made over $100,000 using social media only. That other stuff I call old school business. That’s my biggest issue through this video. You don’t need old school business and business school to be successful. All you need is sell to the demand
BE MORE PROFESSIONAL...should be like the number one but then again elbow grease as numero uno was a good choice too hahaha professionalism + Hard work = opportunities. Luck is a plus. Hard work triumphs over luck....every time
They fail because lack of originality. They come up with one good piece that has people attention, but after that they just get boring quick. When 90% of streetwear is trash in quality, you at least need to come up with interesting designs otherwise no one will buy your clothes.

charging $50-$200 for gildan blanks with words on them cough ASSC, VLONE cough
seriously Vlone is selling a shirt with friends on it for 150 and its sold out. Why they can literally just use transfer paper.
I hit the link too... I bought a shirt from KITH last week for $1.00 less. I do like the difference but - you have to build that brand before you start charging people that kind of money... Maybe they don't. IMO

@New Exit your designs are extremely plain , and your brand doesnt mean anything to any of us. Cold truth but its the view of a customer.
I started my first streetwear brand in 2015 sold a few T-shirt’s here and there then me and my parents stopped doing it for lack of motivation, keep in mind we had not thought about the brand in a business way, like getting LLC , trademark etc.

I really liked that brand but it was too much like me, in other words I was designing for me and not for an audience,
In mids 2017 I took a course on business management, marketing and I took a break to study the top brands and designers to have a better understanding on people they were targeting,
So now going into 2018 I’m pretty confident and know everything from every single type of blank T-shirt to almost every single type of fabric to do cut and sew, also thru out those 3 years of experimenting I learned A LOT of stuff I don’t know and that has help me a lot this time, I regained the idea of starting another brand this coming up year , and I already started working on a business plan , marketing plan , the amount of money I will have to spend to lunch it , and the amount of money I will have in profit , taxes in USA are very important too, this is a business and little things that you learn thru out the years finally collide together and soon you realize that without those experiences you wouldn’t be were you are right now, so the key is

Fire video again, Reg. You can not only apply this kind of advice to starting a Street Wear brand but to all kind of Startups. Keep up the good work.
Real talk brother most brands fail because of the lack of business strategy also they just do things and hope that it would work out but to gain success there has to be a method behind the madness.
Dropping bombs 💣
The biggest mistake I did with multiple brands was trying to be a “perfectionist” it’s not ready yet.
You just have to take action sometimes
Hey homie tryna check out my brand on insta @posersco_
this video really shows the huge passion you have for street fashion. cheers m8
I think also a lot of people fail cos it’s not really their passion in life they just look at it as a way to make money
Facts , learnt that the hard way
I noticed a lot of startups now have a huge center on graphic design, and what I mean by that is it’s usually artists taking their art and putting it on a gildan shirt in square format. Nothing wrong with it, at least it’s original artwork, but I wish there was a little more creativity into how the artwork blends onto a shirt.
And then you have startup instagram brands that take Aliexpress designs and mark them up to resell. 😂
"GET HELP".......working to make it happen right now and this is honestly the best advice in the whole video.

Most repeatable mistake we see is that brands forget that your clothing line is the uniform your community wears. Without a community is far less sustainable. ALSO when new brands start off with an "I can do this by myself" mentality.
Leo Martinez what do you mean by the “I can do this myself” so you mean the person behind the brand or the actual brand itself ?
This is great advice for any sort of business whether it's street wear or whatever. Thanks!
4:32 Absolutely!! Well said! Passion is the key - success comes freely to those who are passionate and creative.
I appreciate you speaking critically in this video, not something many fashion youtubers do.
There's too many generic labels, that claim to be streetwear, even though they're doing the same thing as everyone else. Streetwear is rooted in individuality and the expression of it but what people call streetwear now isn't authentic.
Rewatched for the 3rd time. I’m the casuals biggest fan 🙋🏻♂️
Understanding branding
Damn, that intro is dope though....

You need really good branding to succeed.

Its all timing and who you know i came out with the 1st LA graff line called Fatcap in the early 90s and sold it to japan before the game was flooded with bullshit and when you can get top dollar overseas no they dont pay shit
Are we gonna get part 4 for ‘How to Start a Streetwear Brand’?
cliché but u can do anything u put your mind to 😊
dont let nobody tell u different
Last comment. It’s clear you was a business major in college and this is why you don’t know what it take to run a business. School only teach you %10 of business the rest you have to learn from experience.
@THE CASUAL Yeah, but where do I find those people that are willing to 'help me out'? I mean, I can not really even pay myself 'properly' yet......( I am a Graphic Designer and, for example, could use someone helping me out with finance)
Bingo 3:54 the only thing that matters if if your selling or not. All that other stuff save for someone else.
Gotta connect with the streets

Thank you
Best video that I seen in awhile very informative thank you @crookedstateofmind
Thanks man
5:18 I’ve made over $100,000 using social media only. That other stuff I call old school business. That’s my biggest issue through this video. You don’t need old school business and business school to be successful. All you need is sell to the demand
head on!
I’ve been trying to find a designer that’s local to me and I have been struggling to find one anyone got advice for finding a designer??
Where do you live?
who are you and do you have a clothing line or brand that made it .....
What's your brand?
BE MORE PROFESSIONAL...should be like the number one but then again elbow grease as numero uno was a good choice too hahaha professionalism + Hard work = opportunities. Luck is a plus. Hard work triumphs over luck....every time
