Appreciate the tutorial! The spring was definitely a challenge to get back in properly. I actually found the initial disassembly portion more useful than the reassembly portion when it came to putting everything back together. Thumbs up!
Thanks for the video, helped me to strip my lock down and realize that part of it was broken which was causing it to not unlock or lock my car. Great video and very informative
Hey Alex this tutorial was raelly helpful. Just want to add that the spring needs to be tensioned when reassembling the cylinder so that the key springs bak to the upright position after locking/unlocking. There is another video demonstrating this quite well, but your dissassembly tut is superior.
This worked for my VW Polo. Same mechanism in it. All the other vids on here dont show how easy it actually is to rotate the spring and compress it using the outer collar piece. Sorted..Many thanks.
Great video. Same lock fitted to Polo. I found my lock was clogged with what I would guess wound be detergent containing wax, and the wax had solidified within the barrel. Had to use a mallet to remove the barrel out of the sleeve. Some pins wouldn’t remove but didn’t prove to be a problem when reassembled. Took numerous attempts to replace the main spring.
Thank you. Your video was useful. I bought a repair kit that was out of specifications and i nedded to sand some parts and use new and old parts to get that thing worrk. Now it is working but without the spring effect but the spring is important to keep the assembly. The car has 20 years. Not perfect but working.
Good video mate, my lock had solidified lithium grease and I ended up taking mine all apart on my polo lock and put everything in a ultrasonic cleaner with degreasing solution, it cleaned up everything. I then re greased everything and put back together. Looks and works like new again.
I took mine apart and put in a ultrasonic cleaner, all parts came out sparkling like new. I also changed the barrel tumbler plate springs with new ones. Like yours i had loads of that white stuff all over it. A bit of advice never use Wd 40 on it after cleaning as all that white stuff will come back. Only use a 3 in one lubricant with PTFE
Worked for me. Thanks very much. The 'ring' part at time 1:33 is different on my 2004 Jetta (doesn't twist, comes straight out, and has a little detent that prevents the twist motion). --I Nearly lost my mind trying to get the spring back in!!! Had to use the longer screwdrivery looking piece to compress the spring while twisting the ring part with a wrench, thereby twisting the spring+ring until the ring detent sat properly. It took me an hour to finally get this last bit all-together... good luck to others! Nice to have a lock again!
Thank you! I regularly learn from videos when doing DIY projects, but was unable to find a descent video for how to do this.. hence why I created this video for others to learn from. I just haven't found myself in a similar situation since. There's so much good content already online.
It's the only video I seen on UA-cam I can follow . I would suggest more lighting and slowing it down a Lipitor more for the viewer . Other than that. Nice video .
it might be redundant to mention this, but really great video, helped me a lot a little piece broke off so I'll have to replace that, but I cleaned and lubed it and it's working for now better than before anyways^^
Thx for the video. Fixed my 97 passat lock. Just make sure you put the pieces under and above the spring in correct position. You can assemble it wrong way and then the key won´t turn well and the spring works wrong way (returns the key when turning lock, not unlock). In my case the first part, C-shaped socket, had to be facing in the other way than in this video.
Thanks for the video. It was very helpful and informative to say the least. It will help me to repair my boot lock hopefully. As the internal assembly is seized and I cannot insert my ignition key into it.
Thanks for the video, the VW Lupo locks are exactly the same. It would be nice to see how the different parts line up when you are putting them back together, I found that a bit tricky.
Just done mine the spring is a pain so put the barrel in a small vice & easy peasy!! I had to put the barrel on a socket (key end) so it doesn't move downwards with the spring pressure to get the retaining 'C' clip on!!
Hi, I did this yesterday with an new beetle lock. Your video helped me a lot! Disassembling and cleaning was very easy with your clip. Unfortunately I had some issues reassembling it, because I didn't look at the spring before I removed it (eventhough you said to do so) and you don't show the reassembling part in detail. Anyway, thanks for sharing! :)
hi dude just watched your video .it was very good and I think you done a good job explaining what had to be done I have jut done the looks on my mk3 . which with the help of videos like yours I had the comfidince t try . keep it up yours gus from Edinburgh
Thank you I actually was able to take it apart..unfortunately There is a broken ring below the spring :(..I'll see if the junk yard has it and I'll be god to go...Thank you for your video :)
i really struggled with the spring as the old one broke to bits and i could not figure how it went back in, any advice on the spring issue that would help alot thanks?
Thanks for the video. I ordered a second hand part but taking out the cylinder is plan B. Couldn't lock the car and the Window kept going down, and this week it got stiff and the lock was spinning in the door. Took it out and apart to find two of rings shattered in the mechanism. Thanks
great video the only thing is that at the of the video. you don´t see the inside of the lock well. and the spring also. other then that great video thank you it helped
The fast forward portion went a bit too long so hard to catch some of the re-assembly details. Also, once the parts were heavily lubed, it was hard to see. Still, a very useful video which helped me with my lock. Thx
Please everyone only use WD40 to clean the lock then dry and wipe off properly any excess and use graphite as a lubricant with WD40 the lock will jam up with Crud in no time at all graphite is the way to go
Mine is not going back when I lock the car. I think I did the spring wrong. Otherwise works. Any guesses? I don’t understand how the spring needs to go exactly
I like this video but u fast forwarded it in the part which is assembling them back which is more important than disassembling them but it was useful though thumbs up
This video was extremely helpful (thank you!) but would have a appreciated a slower reassembly guide. If anyone else is stuck on THAT BLOODY SPRING like I was, take a gander at the diagram at 0:08 of ua-cam.com/video/Y5nVqouH1KU/v-deo.html I recommend some needle nosed pliers, it's a right pig to get into place. Also, I found my pins stuck out a bit which meant I had to wiggle the parts on and off. Since I'd already mapped them out I figured I'd play around and see if they fit better in a different configuration. Switched a few around and got them completely flush without having to file anything down, I guess a previous owner must have taken it apart or it was never right to begin with?
So why does my cylinder turn round and round? What specific problem would I have? Do you have a video showing how to re-key a new cylinder (?) which is what I'm going to have to do with my used replacement part.
My key doesn't go all the way in, it gets stuck. Is there a way to get the barrel and the part with the pins out to clean it up? Its also the trunk lock, slightly different then the door lock, but similar.
Thanks a lot! I have never done this on an audi but from what I saw on other videos the process is almost identical for practically all makes, you shouldn't have troubles. Good luck!
Hello, how do I tighten the bolt securing the cylinder on the door?, I have been trying but once I turn the bolt all the way is like it's not doing anything at all, I can just go and take the cylinder out by hand.
I'm also trying to repair the right steering wheel on the Volkswagen Passat b5 car, but I don't succeed when I insert the key into the SA hub, it's hard to lock it, what's wrong with the spring, how should the spring be positioned, thanks
I liked the video but it is true you need to be more careful keeping the subject in the camera frame. I got the idea of how to reassemble. I have a 2000 and it is slightly different.
today i wash skoda laura including engine but aftr that it shows problem ,its get start easily like b4 but its engine stops after some time, what should i do?
I am unable to get my locking mechanism out after inserting the key. My whole locking mechanism has been seized, which is why I removed it to try to take it apart and clean it. Do you think the locking pins might be preventing me from disassembling further? I a beginning to think the only thing I will be able to do is replace it.
I assume you're talking about what i was doing around 2:50? It was honestly really difficult when i did the lock cylinder for another one of my doors. The pins make grooves over time within the housing so its nearly impossible to yank the thing out. My only recommendations would be to keep turning it and messing with the key while trying to pull it out. Also, lube never hurt anything.
Somebody broke my lock. I have managed to open it. I have a used lock from another car without the key. How do I open it without a key because I want to put my pins into the new lock
I just bought an Ibiza 2005 and the seller said that he had changed the driver door. So with the key I can start the car but not close the doors. The lock It doesn't turn at all. Any help can be useful guy's. Thanks
I tried this and everything was fine until I had to align to spring during reassembly...Anyone has an idea where I could find a diagram of the exact position of the parts? My lock is working, but the spring action is not. And I know, I should have noted how the spring was seated before removing it, my bad ;) Thanks!
Appreciate the tutorial! The spring was definitely a challenge to get back in properly. I actually found the initial disassembly portion more useful than the reassembly portion when it came to putting everything back together. Thumbs up!

where is that video !?
This worked for my VW Polo. Same mechanism in it. All the other vids on here dont show how easy it actually is to rotate the spring and compress it using the outer collar piece. Sorted..Many thanks.
Thank you so very much. I needed 3 videos to become able to repair my key. That spring drove me crazy.
Your video helped me take apart my broken lock (1999 VW Passat) and replace the busted part, and to put it together again. Thank you so much!
thanks man, i manage to repair my broken cylinder, and replace pins, on audi a6 door thanks to your video.
+Ramon Musters I took out pins from cylinder i got from scrap yard and put pins from my broken cylinder so my key can fit.
I have a late 90's Passat and used your video to rebuild my drivers door lock. Great vid, thanks.
Thanks a lot Alex!! In my case the spring holder was broken so couldnt fix it, but wouldnt have done that without your Tutorial! thanks!
Thank you. Your video was useful. I bought a repair kit that was out of specifications and i nedded to sand some parts and use new and old parts to get that thing worrk. Now it is working but without the spring effect but the spring is important to keep the assembly. The car has 20 years. Not perfect but working.
You saved my life, thank you so much. A bad day just turned into a valuable lesson.
You are a lifesaver. Thank you! For future videos go a little slower on reassembly. Great job.
Thank you so much for making this video. Managed to get my stuck key out of the barrel with this....finally. You are a dude.

Got my lock repair kit and PTFE 3 in one from ebay and taking the plunge! Can't wait till this is sorted and woking correctly!

why didn't you continue to make similar vids? this is by far the most helpful I've seen yet!
Thank you! I regularly learn from videos when doing DIY projects, but was unable to find a descent video for how to do this.. hence why I created this video for others to learn from. I just haven't found myself in a similar situation since. There's so much good content already online.
Super labombastic fantastic školastic!!!
thank you for the illustration. the focus is sometimes a problem, but I got the hang of it. tnx

your video is very helpful! I've a 2002 Golf and works fine, thanks!

use graphite not oil to lubricate your lock cylinder. Great info outside of that
A very big thanks to you. My car lock is fixed...
Your help is very much appreciated, thank you !

Great video... Until you speed up the assembly part (especially the spring assembly). Why did you speed the hardest bit up?
Well... i'm struggling to put it back together... that damn spring... any more info on how it should be?
Great video pal, Iv just bought a 2001 polo and it's exactly the same, not fixed it yet but just bought the parts from eBay !

Good Job!
Explicit video. The only difficulty was the spring in position. Patient must be your device!
Thank you for the video. Fixed my lock.

Latter stages still had it on fast forward so couldn't hear it see rebuild stage correctly useful deconstruction though
Thanks for the tutorial. Good info here!
Good day, do You have a video about lock Cylinder housing of the car trunk dissensamble? Of Jetta😊
how easy is the plastic cover to remove from the cylinder? i want to replace my black handles to match the colour of my car. thanks!
Super video thank you
My key doesn't go all the way in, it gets stuck. Is there a way to get the barrel and the part with the pins out to clean it up? Its also the trunk lock, slightly different then the door lock, but similar.
Many thanks, i save my lock door ! Regards.

thanks..very helpful video..that was i looking for.How do you think about audi a6 from 2006-7 door lock.could there be many differents?
Thanks a lot! I have never done this on an audi but from what I saw on other videos the process is almost identical for practically all makes, you shouldn't have troubles. Good luck!
Thank you very much, very helpful.
Today my VW rabbit door key unable to lock it spins 360 . I can turn to the left to unlock. Would I need a new cylinder?
when I purchased my MK4 Golf it came with 2 keys. Is their anyway to order tumblers for the original key so I only have to carry 1 key around?
Great video
nice work my friend
Hello, how do I tighten the bolt securing the cylinder on the door?, I have been trying but once I turn the bolt all the way is like it's not doing anything at all, I can just go and take the cylinder out by hand.
I know this is an old video, but the part of my lock that's jammed up is that little flap covering the keyhole. How do I fix that?
Thx very clear even for a little frenchy like me ^^
awesome video but i fucked up, i pulled out my key and forgot were all the small parts inside the lock should be
I'm also trying to repair the right steering wheel on the Volkswagen Passat b5 car, but I don't succeed when I insert the key into the SA hub, it's hard to lock it, what's wrong with the spring, how should the spring be positioned, thanks
