Having done the Stoke, Blythe Bridge and Derby Llandudno with 20’s this brought back many happy memories. Such a unique build which sums up why in these decades we had the best variety of traction in Europe.
I packed in bashing at the end of 1985 and after watching this I wish I hadn't... used to love the 20s; plenty to Skeg and on drags / diversions from Preston, and a few piloting from Ayr on the Euston- Stranraer overnight. But bloody hell, all the way over the Pennines and down the N Wales coast!! Never knew this happened.
Yeah, we regularly used the Jolly Fisherman to Skeggy. On one occasion one of the 20s failed at Boston on the way home. The finally decided to let the remaining loco pull the lengthy train AND the dead engine all the way to Derby. It was a struggle over the Lincolnshire Wolds but we made it. Oh happy days with three generations of my family in one compartment!
Brilliant video. If I remember correctly you could get a pair of 20's on the Skegness-Leicester to Long Eaton and then get off there to wait for the Skegness-Derby and get on that.
Hi - im making a tv show about a Class 20 ( the Sir John Betjemen) that is being moved from Derby to Pickering by road - we are looking for some archive of the Class 20's in action from days gone by - this footage is perfect - are you the rights holder? cheers - Dan

Remember the Derby to Skegness summer specials we used to go on as a kid in the 1970s. Dad worked for BR so free tickets. Two 20s pulled that too.
