I actually slept in a class 20 one night in a coal depot in 1982😅was broken down and I'd nowhere to sleep 🥱 that night 😴 long story.😉😂yet another great video.🎥

Thankyou! Don't worry, my plans are to cover all of the diesel classes, plus a few pre-BR ancestors, over the lifetime of the series. The only reason I don't make these any faster is due to the difficulty of collecting enough footage at this time of year. Come spring, when the preservation lines are open again, I'll most certainly be on the case.
I'd love to do an episode on the 'bones' but finding any 58s running, or even available to shoot on a siding, might prove tough going, but I'll certainly try!

I count myself as very fortunate to have been living in Huyton, near Liverpool, in the mid 1950s. My primary school teacher was 'in the know' about railway matters and would tell us about interesting things at the local station. So I saw Deltic on trial, on a run from Vulcan foundry to Liverpool, and a bit later, I think, D8002 doing the same. I immediately loved the sleek and shiny green machine, with its tiny white numbers and racy font. So good to know they're almost as old as I am and still going strong.

Great video, i remember these on MGR trains around South Derbyshire growing up in the 70's & 80's you could hear them a mile off on when i walked home from school, we always used to sit by the Leicester to Burton line, without the fear of the H&S nurds giving it large 🙂Then mixed freight workings up to Stoke from Toton, days gone by hey!
Fantastic video of the class 20's I remember seeing the DRS class 20s at Carlisle station during the early 00,s having not been to Carlisle in many a year it's a good sign that the English Electric type 1 was so successful to the fact they are still running on the mainline even in 2022
I know, they're practically antiques at this point! Yet still useful.
My abiding memory of the Class 20s is from Hull in the mid-70s, working freights coupled nose-to-nose
As a child growing up in the 1980's I do remember the class 20's working the morning freight to Drffield & Bridlington that I'd see on my way to school.
Fantastic video of a loco I saw daily where I lived in the 70s and 80s. What is now the Churnet Valley Railway was the BR line to the British Industrial Sand quarries at Oakamoor and I used to wait a Cheddleton station to see the trains. They had to stop for the manual level-crossing which the drivers and the guardsvan man trusted me to close. Quite often I had a cab-ride to Oakamoor and back, and once I drove a class 47 all the way! I love the whistling sound of the class 20s and you have captured it here. 🙂
Used to live next to ECML in 80s and seeing them thundering by at night with a 2ft sheet of flame coming from the exhust!!! You dont see that anymore!
Depends if you live where they're stored these days; apparently they still have some rather spectacular cold starts!

Oddly enough I'm actually gathering footage for that episode! It's a hard series to focus on due to the patchy nature of finding these old diesels to film, but rest assured, my long term goal is to make a profile video for all of the major classes of BR diesel!

@@hullhistorynerd have you heard of Realtime Trains/Rail Record? They might help find mainline workings of some of what your looking for. For example, Colas Railfreight operate lots of test trains on behalf of Network Rail using Class 37 and also Class 97 (former class 37) locomotives. On RailRecord it'll show an operator for the service and the type of test train. PLPR, UTU and TRU are often 37s, but occasionally 67s or the 950 (purpose built based on the 150 design). If it says NMT it'll generally be the Network Rail Class 43 HST but occasionally this is replaced with 37s or 67s. I hope this is of use.

Brilliant short film!!!!!! My favourite class, my first train spotted was 20177. On a merry-go- round at Basford Crossings in the mid 1980,s. Very interesting and informative. 10/10.

Another great video. One for the established train enthusiast. I know what classes 14, 15, 16, 17 and 28 are but a newcomer maybe not.
My goal with the series is to cover every single class to create a nice repository of info, so eventually I'll be able to put links in the videos when other locos are mentioned. It might take some time though, but that's the goal!

I've never seen the RHT train use Class 20's, always 37's when I see them. Very interesting, thank you for another great video. (I'm watching them out of order, plus, we've only just come across you).
Yeah, we've had 37s for the last two years but for a couple of years before that it was 20s, which was lots of fun. Very distinctive sound as they thundered past the house!
A superb video! I’m really enjoying the Diesels series. Also, Higgins Brown has created a fantastic theme tune! It really is a decent piece of music.
Hopefully they'll be a little more regular in the future, I just need to get out there to find more old diesels to shoot. And yes, I agree, that's certainly one of Higgins' best tracks!
Diverse traction types were undoubtedly the result of backhanders and keeping friends happy. That's how things ran back then, and generally still do. In the 50s and 60s it was heavy engineering, now it's pharmaceuticals and media production.
I think that's basically how things have *always* run, and has never really been any different.

Immingham men (my dad being one of them) generally preferred to Marshall pairs of 20s cab to cab as the heavy bonnet ironed out any uneven track, giving a smoother ride.

They exported quite of few of this type with modifications of course there a a few in Western Australia which look very similar.

Someone sets some sort of random target, giving no thought to what it actually implies, and someone else ruins everything by actually trying to achieve it rather than telling them to take a hike. Just you wait as this exact same story will repeat over the next 10-15 years, with the government insisting on making all vehicles electric and then having problems with the power grid because no one bothered checking if the network can actually support so many EVs.
Best “vintage” diesel noise? Deltics accelerating away from station stops. But Class 20s have that certain something; loads of them in the day through Loughborough (Midland).
Definitely up there with some good 37 thrash!
Ok, 37s as well, all those at Dairycoates and through Firsby especially on summer Saturdays in the 1960s. Plus their three year reign on the two Cleethorpes - Kings Cross trains. Ah, when Lincolnshire had proper railways...

Yeah, it was further complicated by the different regions of BR still basically being run by the people who ran the Big Four, and still competing with each other, something I'll be touching on in the Class 37 video I'm working on next.
This is a brilliantly crafted presentation, but I need to nerd on a bit about a technical error regarding locos working in tandem.
If working in tandem, it means that a driver is required on each loco as there is no equipment available to connect them for multiple working (MW) - it's a skilled task requiring concentration and cooperation. Locos connected with compatible MW gear only require one driver.
These EE Type 1s (20s) have the most common BR type of MW gear denoted by a small blue star on the ends of the loco above buffer beams.
It's a bit more complex than that, because some types had differently coded MW gear, (eg; orange square, red circle etc,) and I suggest following this link for deeper explanation.

Might be tricky, I don't live anywhere near any place where I could see them running - sadly there doesn't seem as much impetus to preserve electric locos as diesel ones, I guess preservation railways would struggle to safely maintain high voltage overhead cables.
If there was ever a way for me to get hold of footage of these locos running, I would certainly consider it!
I don’t know why but I don’t really like the choppers, don’t know why just don’t hit well with me. More surprising, I am more of the fan of the class 15 and 17, even the 17 too. Still not bad loco and try survivor like the class 37s and 31s diesels.
It is apocryphal that Class 15's suffered from poor visibility and is always cited as one of the reasons for their downfall [along with a problematic Paxman engine. No BTC or BRB reports mention visibility from the cab as being an issue Unlike the engine, no attempt was made to alter the design to alleviate any perceived problem. A fix was readily to hand inasmuch as cutting down the height of the "short" bonnet. This had been done by several US Railroad companies to their "switcher" type locos and the practice became so common that new-build locos were built in that style, giving the look common to US locos today. Think about it, most US locos are "switchers" albeit the short bonnet has mostly become full width instead of full height, and they do just fine.
Ah, happy memories of seeing them in pairs going round the curve by the Anlaby Road flyover on summer Saturday trains to Scarborough in the 1970s.
They occasionally still do, only this time pulling the RHTT during autumn and winter! A great sight and sound, to be sure!

Hello There Again it is Mr Cannadine T. Boxill-Harris, I have another interesting idea for most of you Class 313, Class 314 and that also is including those interesting Class 315 Fans out there, rather than scrapping most of those Class 313's Class 314's including the Class 315's maybe you guys can convert them and including the refurbishment into those Leyland 680 Engine, Volvo B10M Engine, Cummins M11 Engine, Gardner 6LXC Engine, Gardner 6LXB, Engine, Gardner 8LXB Engine, Class 313's, Class 314's and the Class 315's and convert all of them into a 2 Carriages and Three Carriages of the Class 313's, Class 314's and that is including those Class 315's for most of us Class 314's and the Class 315's Diesel Train Fans out there Please Are you still going to do this interesting type of Project for all of us out there Pretty Please?
What seems to be the replacement locomotives for the 20's? After all they are old and must be expensive to maintain, have old engines which are no longer environmentally sustainable?
The bigger question is; is there any need for the Class 20s any more? Almost all freight in the country is now pulled by 66s, which are considerably more powerful, more reliable and increasingly easier to find parts for compared to these vintage machines. The role they were originally built for evaporated not long after they were built forcing them to be operated in tandem in order to be useful, whereas a 66 or a 60 is a single unit.
In terms of the environment, the numbers of vintage diesels on the main line is down to heritage levels these days, with tiny fleets that altogether don't really create much pollution compared to cars, lorries and aircraft, so I don't think that's necessarily a worry in 2023!

It had some crazy 80's dystopian vibes and I can see from the description that that was almost the story that they were going for :)
Drove loads of them 1974 as a fireman at eastfield traction depot Glasgow all the old steam men sayed the were just like driving a steam locomotive just a lot easier all the drivers drove them in reverse I can honestly say the were horrible the heaters never worked on them the doors would not stay closed the fireman’s seat must have been designed by a madman in the middle of winter the only heating was the small electric ring for the drivers tea can but still a great job plus my uncle was one of my drivers
Aye, I've heard from a few old drivers that those early diesels were draughty, noisy, smelly and uncomfortable, and yet they thought they were *still* more comfortable to work than steam!
@@hullhistorynerd Most were draughty 37's were the worst especially if nose end filters were clogged , 20,s were fun in the other seat as power handles were mechanically linked (under the floor ) if driver pulled for power you had to be well clear of other power handle . Some jobs on class 20 were pig awful , traction motor re brush , 6 brush boxes instead of usual 4 and no pigtails so brushes bugger remove , No 1 motor was nearly impossible . The load reg governor switches bugger to set up (VRS/VRLS ) so as to get them working satisfactory in multi , had many years on them at Immingham ,

Definitely, I'm about ready to start on my Class 37 episode. Collecting enough footage of most locos is tough as it often requires visits to heritage railways, most of which have been closed because of covid for many months over the last couple of years. Luckily the 37s have been running every day past my house for the last few months!

That's correct, the rail head treatment trains (RHTT) are an annual chance for the old guard locos to come out and play!

What causes the chirppy whistling sound?
I have no idea! Random, non expert guess is that it could be a turbo, or some sort of air compressor, but I honestly haven't got a clue. Sounds great though!

The turbo's I reckon , maybe its to do with them being V8 , they also have gear driven balance shafts so maybe they could be noisy , worked on class 20's for many years at Immingham TMD

I thought class 20s were type 2 not type 1
No, type 2 had different power specifications. There was an a English Electric Type 2, the Baby Deltic, but it proved unreliable and never entered mass production beyond the initial batch. Before TOPS numbering came into service in the 1970s, the class 20s were known as the English Electric Type 1, which you can see in older trainspotting books, or if you Google English Electric Type 1.
