- CD/DVD liner note from James - One Man Band (2007):
“It’s a strange reality of the modern popular song that the first time it’s played is when it’s recorded. Sometimes a song will be finished for deadline in the studio the day the thing is cast in stone forever. I know that songs and arrangements evolve and develop over time; that somewhere around the twentieth time it’s played for a live audience, a song finally completes itself. That, among other things, is what makes a good live recording unique. I’ve often thought that live performance means being well prepared and then waiting for the inevitable, unexpected thing to happen. We come onstage, well rehearsed and in good shape, and repeat what we have done before as best we can. But the real goal is to be in the present moment and on the surface of ourselves; open and trusting. Nobody wants to be perfect: that’s frozen, dead…It’s “be here now”, I guess…
Of course, @larrygoldings does more than just accompany me. His growing presence in the world of jazz is well acknowledged, both for his own recordings and live performances and as a member of a good number of team efforts. I tend to form musical (and personal) relationships with other players and then stick with them for years. @Arnold McCuller and David Lasley have worked with me since the mid-‘70s and others nearly as long (Jimmy Johnson, Steve Gadd, Mike Landau, Kate Markowitz, Valerie Carter…)
After my great friend, producer and pianist Don Grolnick died in ’96, I performed with a number of excellent keyboard players. It was during the recording of my October Road album in ’02 that I worked with Larry. Russ Titelman had booked him to play on “Mean Old Man” along with Steve Gadd on drums, Jimmy Johnson on bass, Clifford Carter on synth, and the fine seven-string jazz guitarist, @John Pizzarelli . This was an incredible band, and after hearing Larry Goldings’ solo on that song, first time through, he pinned it. That was our introduction and he’s been my first call ever since.
Then there’s the bus factor. You see, someone’s playing may be great, but what’s it going to be like spending 10 hours a day riding to the next gig with them for a couple of months? Larry’s Bus Factor is not a factor for he is a bus riding fool, for a fact.
Part of his talent is his ability to “split his hands.” Though not as painful as it sounds, it does require great focus and skill to play a melody/accompaniment with his right hand and, with his left hand, (often on another keyboard) play a distinct bass pattern. This Larry can do with effortless grace, and he has made this One Man Band show possible. He is a committed father, brother, and son, and I am in his debt. Larry Goldings is my One Man Band.” - James Taylor

LYRICS
Carolina In My Mind by James Taylor
In my mind I’m gone to Carolina
Can’t you see the sunshine
Can’t you just feel the moonshine
Ain’t it like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind
Oh, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind
Karin she’s a silver sun
You best walk her way and watch it shine
Watch her watch the morning come
A silver tear appearing now
Well, I’m cryin’ ain’t I
I’m gone to Carolina in my mind
Ain’t no doubt in no one’s mind
That love’s the finest thing around
Whisper something soft and kind
Hey, baby, the sky’s on fire
I’m dyin’ ain’t I
Ain’t I gone to Carolina in my mind
In my mind I’m gone to Carolina
Can’t you see the sunshine
Can’t you just feel the moonshine
Ain’t it like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind
Till I’m gone to Carolina in my mind
Dark and silent late last night
Think I might have heard the highway calling
Geese in flight and dogs that bite
And signs that might be omens
Say I’m goin’, I’m goin’
Gone to Carolina in my mind
It’s with a holy host of others
Standing round me
Still I’m on the dark side of the moon
And it looks like it goes on like this forever
You must forgive me
If I’m gone to Carolina in my mind
In my mind I’m long gone to Carolina
Can’t you see the sunshine
I said can’t you just feel the moonshine
Ain’t it just like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind

He doesn’t care about fame or fortune. He just sings from his heart and it shows in his music. One of the best musicians on earth
So much like Jackson Brown and John Prime. Let's not forget Bonnie Raitt. So wonderful to know others appreciate the same
In their own respective rites, all those who reach us with their excellence and evokation, are great!
Exactly. He sounds the same in concert too. So worth the opportunity to see him live if you get the chance.
I wonder why then he became so wealthy charging people for his records and concerts if that were remotely true…
@@megastick9324 Wouldn't you do the same?
Me and my wife loved the Carolinas. Went there for 30 years. She has recently passed away and this song brings her back to me every time I hear it. Thank you James taylor!
❤
Is it bad that I skipped where he told the back story of this song, because I want to live in the story I made up myself? I Hope your story with your late wife can be even more magical for the words in his song. God Bless you and your Dear Wife.
so sorry brother....
There a few who can write such fantastic songs and give concerts as charmingly as James Taylor. He puts his heart in to his wonderful music.
King james
Yes, but I’ve seen his brother Livingston (Liv) Taylor, who doesn’t have to take a back seat to his more famous brother. Give him a listen if you can. Cheers!
What brings forth the tears when we hear songs about a longing for home? Home, a place during a time, the place has changed. The time is long passed. The memory is all we have. Make the most of the time you have. These are the moments that will not be repeated. These are the good old days.
I remember years ago when my sister graduated from high school and moved to North Carolina. She had always been my best friend and confidante. I missed her so bad it hurt. This song came out about the same time. It always made me think of her. I miss her now because she's gone to be with the Lord. This song still brings back her memory. Love you Sis!!❤
I just graduated from UNC Chapel Hill this spring, and this song was performed during our ceremony. I might not be old enough to know much about James Taylor, but this song moved me deeply. I truly appreciate this piece. Congratulations, Class of 2024! 🩵
Congrats and GO HEELS🩵🤍
Here’s one you might have heard, written and performed by a group of UNC grads …

I graduated from NCSU in 1971. James Taylor used to sing some nights in the Raleigh Rose Garden. He was just a kid like us then and we had know clue what a legend he would become. Great performer and human being!
All of your music was playing at my sister's memorial. She had your music on her iPad. She went to any concert she could with roses in hand hoping to just say hello. She died very young but never stopped believing she could meet you.
I’m transported back in time to my teens. Sunny summer days, a bicycle and the pain of that first crush on a boy who didn’t know I existed. But the bicycle took me places I cared about and gave me wings ❤️
Jame's voice has never really changed over the years, he sounds as young now as he has always been.
Rather like a fine wine. It improves over time.
This man is amazing
@@jamestierney2531 yea if anything it's getting better as it changes with age, very rare talent
Never met the man but seams like a nice guy and makes incredible music that sounds great today as it did fifty years ago. Thanks for all the memories they’re all good.
Uh oh, I'm falling into the James Taylor musical rabbit hole 😎💛
Me too! What a great time to have been a teen!
James Taylor with his guitar and stool is the Troubadour at his finest. One of the greatest musicians ever
My opinion the best music song writer ever, hands down. Their is something very special about your music that is unexplainable. Thanks James 🙏
Hes special in a way the newbies can never be. His music heals and comforts. Thats what singing and music should be all about. ❤
Yes! Amazing sweet bard of a lifetime
Having seen him perform so many times, it’s always struck me how there’s something hypnotic about his singing
he is such a gift to the world... sweet voice. amazing lyrics and a really slick guitar player ... its not really hard to like james taylor ... very special man , gifted writer and artist
What a wonderful few minutes of storytelling, humor and memories. Not every day one gets to see such a great poet speak, reminisce and sing. Always terrific to spend the time with the great James Taylor. Thank you for sharing.
What an incredible talent. He sings from the heart.
It is such a strange sweetness that someone you never knew can reach a place on such sweet intimacy that you feel they know you.
Timeless. I met a girl in Jerusalem on the Mount of Olives one morning, and for the brief time we were together, we connected. I have no picture, no mugshot, but I wrote a poem when I got home. Some things happen in life to sprinkle magic, but like snowflakes, are soon gone. Still, a lovely memory.
Still has one of the most beautiful voices. An amazing singer. Truly special.
I watched JT played live in Adelaide Festival theatre when I was 22 yo, it had an excellent acoustics, altho I was seated somewhere midway up the theatre, but I remembered it like JT played right in front of me, the songs remain crystal clear till today, am now 62. I could now play almost all JT hits by myself now, learnt myself to play his songs.
There is a place in the heart that James Taylor's music reaches in and gives a warm embrace.
I’m 59 now an I still cry when I hear just the first verse of this song. In 1999 I played this tape for my dad while he had chemo treatments. We called it out James Taylor concerts. We both would cry and remember all the better times and hopes and dreams. My dad was only 57 when I lost him. So when I listen to all this music now I feel like he is her right with me and I remember all the beautiful times and memories he made for me and his beautiful blue eye and big smile. Love you dad!
That really touched me. Hugs to you my friend
God bless you son, and your memories of your loving Dad.
Lots of love Cindy ❤️
Your Dad is still right there with you… he probably brought you to this song. Our dog Lil’Girl brought it to me for Mother’s Day. We lived in North Carolina when we were all young… my husband… her Daddy was in the Marine Corps in 1984. She was my Angel then & still continues to be.🐾😇
I do to. My husband and I loved seeing him in concert. I played all his music at my husband’s funeral for him. We spent many summers in NC with our kids when they were young. Now it brings him close to me. Miss him very much. ❤❤❤
I always loved your Special Song's! Great Musician and we Thank the Lord for your special Song's. Brings back so many Memories of my Beautiful Childhood. Miss Momma and Daddy I miss you so much here at Home in North Carolina! 😪😪😪😊😊😊🥰
Guitar and James Taylor, what a Heavenly Blend !! Blessings JT 🙏
No one can sing those beautiful 🎶 songs of yours like the One and Only
James Taylor. You are truly a Legend .
Thank You for you and your Music.
I am in my 70's now, lately I hear the highway calling...thank you James. I am hoping the America to come can find the innocence and a bit of righteousness that it once had that gave birth to you.
I've always loved this song. His voice is as beautiful and clear as it ever was, and his ability to weave an image through music is unparalleled. I walk through the places of the past through my mind when I listen to this song.
This highlights how well 3 things, a voice, guitar, and piano (plus that other doohickey), can blend together to create a masterpiece!
I was 12 yrs. old when I learned this song as my very first song on the guitar. I'd play it over and over again, until the wee hours of the night. It drove my parents nuts, but because my father was a music teacher and my mother was classically trained, they tolerated my persistence. LOL.
recored and give us a sample
We can only hope that at least 1 of his twin boys wiill carry dard's precious lyrics + melodies into the future, as part of his already created and enduring legacy. Maybe both boys will....
Haha good job. Tough critics , but I’m sure they actually loved it. Quite the song as a first for guitar, cool.👍
big fan of James Taylor--reminds me a lot of my own dad; many thanks!
South Carolina is my home state, although I live in North Carolina now, so this song touches my heart so very much. Many Many great memories. He has such a great sense of humor and such a graceful performer and artistic genius. ❤❤❤
This song is probably one of the most beautiful pieces of art ever
God Bless You and your Family James. No matter how old we may be your music continues to lift all our heart's and souls 💞
I saw him last year in Leeds and if you closed your eyes and realy listened ,his voice hasnt changed from when i first heard it 50 years ago!!!!!! a true legend of an artist something the kids toaday would do well to appreciate.
Absolutely brilliant performance from a true and unique musical genius. And such a nice guy, too. If James ever fancied diversifying, he would make a fabulous standup comedian - his timing and delivery are faultless! The world is a much better place because of people like this.
I have loved this man since I was a young teenager, now seventy eight. Saw him in Texas about twenty years ago. He’s still handsome and love his music still!😊
This song reminds me of my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost battling cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I never missed a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times but sometimes I wonder why bad things always happen to good people
I have admired this gentleman’s peerless talent since I was 17….1969….he has not lost even a step….he is a blessing
North Carolina represent! Such and awesome song. Glad I was born and raised in this great state.
The most beautiful version of this song - I think. Love it.
My friend and I saw him here in Western Australia set in a famous vineyard in the south, open air, audience sitting on the lawns, backdrop of the trees and our native birds singing. Perfect. These music are treasures.
Beautiful song, perhaps my favorite JT song ever. Beautifully performed. Flawless. Bravo, James.
Being a Native Tarheel, this song really hits you hard. I was born and raised 30 miles from Chapel Hill in the Piedmont of North Carolina and can relate to every emotion he has of being homesick. Guess I'll listen to it again.
A voice that echoes perfection through the decades .
Absolutely wonderful. Love the story behind it too.
Lost my dad last year and your music brings me back to him always 💔
When somebody have had the best experience in chillhood, living in an extraordinary place...never forget....just like James Taylor, in North Caroline...
This borders on unbearably beautiful. James' humility is astounding. He is an authentic human and I believe that is why he is so loved. He is a rare breed.
He makes me proud to have the same name and I'm a guitar pickin Carolina Country boy too!!! JAMES R. Taylor
Listening to James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Joan Baez, Carole King, Neil Young, Elton John and Manali hash contributed to train my ears musically. I am forever indebted...am 67 now
Thank you, James, for your timeless, positive music. I saw you in SLC a few years back and will never forget your genuine warmth, talent, and humility.
Oh sweet baby James!! One of the few that still has it in his older years! What a gem!
One of the greatest, natural voices every.
I was born 1961when I'm 9 years old when I heard his songs I'm in love with his songs
This song transferred me back home when I was extremely homesick, thank you James Taylor ❤️
10 years old when I heard this and I love this song so it's changed my world
He never gets old, and also his music never gets old💗🎶
When music was music !!❤❤❤
his voice is always great, doesn't changed at all!!!
I have seen him in concert three times at the Cynthia Michell Woods Pavillon in the Woodlands, TX. Always a fabulous show! Sweet memories of college, early marriage and more carefree days every time I hear his music.
James Taylor is such a treasure!
Thank you for your songs, your patience your time with us ... Godspeed....💫
The only musician and singer that can actually bring my anxiety down.
James thank you so much for your beautiful music. It touched my heart every time.
A man who's music has spread much love! A GOD-GIVEN angel to the world! 🎶😍❤️🌍
From a true person who believes if we did not have music, what a sad world this one would be, thank you James Taylor for making the world a better place!
Will always be my favorite and his songs are so powerful as to recall all my memories of the late 60’s, 70’s and beyond. Thank you, James, for a life well lived and cherished by me and millions of others. This is the song I play on my way to and while I’m at the Outer Banks. Makes me cry every time.
Hello Shirley - Roger from England here. We have been to the Outer Banks many times. I cannot afford to fly now for insurance costs but would love to go again. If you have never done it, next time you are there, take the little red 1942 (my year) Waco biplane flight from Dare County Regional Airport (Manteo on Roanoke Island Barrier Island Aviation). You will never forget it - we have done it twice. Where do you live in the States? With Love.
No matter when or what may be troubling, I go to James for tranquility and soul soothing music. It never fails to restore the peace that had left me.
Absolutely gorgeous singing And guitar playing. Love love love James songs ♥️
I knew when I saw James' first album coming out on Apple Records in 1968 - he had scored and scored big... I'll never forget being a passenger, me impressionable, age 20 in 1970, in a car with Chad Mitchell and his band going over the beautiful Rockies from a gig in Aspen back to Chicago, reclining back into my seat, closing my eyes and listening to James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James," over the radio....sighing quietly in reverie, consciously remembering every single bar of that gorgeous song and incorporating it into my very being...where it has NEVER left me. I can still recall that perfect moment driving through the Colorado Rockies in 1970 with James Taylor singing "There is a young cowboy who lives on the plain...." 💖
James is off the charts good.....an effortless style...very hard to copy...i don't have it yet but maybe one day....but a finnt thing happened...in my attepts to copy the james taylor style, i found my own style...and i think its pretty good..thanks James...maybe one day i ca show you
I remember listening to James Taylor on the mid 1970s and admiring his true to life lyrics.
For me, one of the true greats
what a great performer perfect pitch.beautiful .
The sign of a TRUE artist, when they can sound better live than when they recorded the song in the studio. an absolute gentleman and legend of the music industry.
Not many have ever wrote, played and sang with so little effort. James is a musical genious.
It’s like he just woke up one day and wrote and played them off the top of his head it’s so easy for him he is so good
I'm from South Carolina, but moved away when I was 12. Been back a few times to visit family, but it's not the same. Often I slip into a trip on memory lane and explore the old memories of my childhood. Songs like this put it perfectly
Am sure we all have a love story like this..... something you remember for allways
James Taylor, you are a great storyteller. You are also a great musician and I just love all the music you have given to us all. Best wishes P
Beautiful song, very funny anecdotes. Recently discovered James Taylor music after going to the Carol King musical a few months ago and listening to her music. Thank you - love the sunshine in this song which is currently in short supply here!
Wow haven’t listened to JT for some time and what an artist he is … a very beautiful man
Absolutely beautiful song!!
What a soothing and sweet voice❤❤
James, this is Paul Kruger. Just listened to your performance of Carolina On MY Mind and thought you did an excellent performance of it. Also enjoyed recently watching your special with Carole King on CNN.
Alot of great songs from the sixties. Best, Paul
Attended a free JT concert 40 years ago, in a church, 120th street, upper west NYC. What a treat! Fantastic music. Appreciative crowd. Such a privilege to share in that cosmic moment. Marquis life experience!
Don't you get the feeling he's too good for this world. Perfect voice and a personality to match!
This song makes me cry !

Beautiful...and Larry Goldings is the MAN!!!
Thank you.
One of my heroes. This is so amazing to hear.
Acabo de descubrir este cantautor y me quedo sin palabras
Lo conosco desde chama...Patria y Vida. Dale Cubiche.
