I’m 59 now an I still cry when I hear just the first verse of this song. In 1999 I played this tape for my dad while he had chemo treatments. We called it out James Taylor concerts. We both would cry and remember all the better times and hopes and dreams. My dad was only 57 when I lost him. So when I listen to all this music now I feel like he is her right with me and I remember all the beautiful times and memories he made for me and his beautiful blue eye and big smile. Love you dad!
Your Dad is still right there with you… he probably brought you to this song. Our dog Lil’Girl brought it to me for Mother’s Day. We lived in North Carolina when we were all young… my husband… her Daddy was in the Marine Corps in 1984. She was my Angel then & still continues to be.🐾😇
I do to. My husband and I loved seeing him in concert. I played all his music at my husband’s funeral for him. We spent many summers in NC with our kids when they were young. Now it brings him close to me. Miss him very much. ❤❤❤
What a fortunate life I've had, to be young and grow old alongside artists like James Taylor, Carole King, the Beatles, the Eagles, the Rolling Stones, Linda Ronstadt and Emmy Lou Harris, Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston, James Brown and Marvin Gaye, and so many others. Yes, a fortunate life indeed
When I returned from flying helicopters Vietnam in 1970, one of the first songs I heard on the car radio was "Fire and Rain". When he sang, "Sweet dreams and flying machines, in pieces on the ground.." it was as if he had connected directly into my soul. Since then, James Taylor has always had an ability to make me well up with warm emotion. Thank you JT.
I had dreams of advanced flying machines I had never seen before when I was very young. Battles in the sky. ai think it was symbolic to what I was going through and what I was going to go through. Severe abuse was part of it.
I forget where, but I set up and ran the sound for him in Boston at a show. He freaked me out apologizing for being in the way as we wired the stage and he worked in a new tune. He bought us all lunch. One of the kindest most pleasant people I’ve ever met. 🙏
My wife and I got to go to Nashville and see JT many many years ago. He was awesome. Just a nice man that sings peace into my spirit. That particular crowd was like others I've seen, all races, all ages, normal, eccentric, pleased to witness imperfect perfection. I love you JT. From A youngster to my elderly years, you have always been there. Thank you!
J.T. Thank you for Sharing your talents! "Intuitive, intelligent" humans can tell fake vs. real from afar... YOU are the REAL DEAL. PEACE, from Maryland.
When I was 15 I wanted to be 27 oh how I wish my life was better then and now. Twenty two was my best year. I had a job with no bills just living the Philadelphia Freedom - not any other time like that.😢
I'm 62 and just discovering James Taylor. I knew the music just not the musician. Wow what a great person. A musical artist with feelings as deep as the oceans.
I remember years ago when my sister graduated from high school and moved to North Carolina. She had always been my best friend and confidante. I missed her so bad it hurt. This song came out about the same time. It always made me think of her. I miss her now because she's gone to be with the Lord. This song still brings back her memory. Love you Sis!!❤
My husband played guitar as a hobby but he was actually very good, played for our friends from high school and college. So when he died in 2013, many of our friends called me and said they still pictured my husband of 40 years singing and playing "you've got a friend." Ed was an accomplished and brilliant pharmacist, and loved his guitar playing. He got a severe flu and was gone in ten days at age 64. He had a genius intellect, and can never be replaced. But he loved those James Taylor tunes. Thank you, James.
Such a poet. I can imagine a 73 year old Scandinavian woman hearing this story and song, smiling knowingly, brought back to the sunshine, sea air, and a young man long ago.
Earlier today, listening to James Taylor in my car, I had the exact same thought. I was born the same year he was and I will always be grateful for that.
His voice to this day STILL sounds as sweet as ever . His music is is so damn melancholy .. every song paints a moment in my youth . He is certainly a gift to us from something greater
Saw James and his Son in Vegas. He was wonderful. Felt like my son and I were in the presence of royalty. This North Carolinian's songs will be listened to forever.
Mr. Taylor, if you read this. You are a true legend, the feeling in your songs always inspires me. I wish you a long happy life so you can write more songs to inspire us all. Thank you for your music.
What brings forth the tears when we hear songs about a longing for home? Home, a place during a time, the place has changed. The time is long passed. The memory is all we have. Make the most of the time you have. These are the moments that will not be repeated. These are the good old days.
Yes, but I’ve seen his brother Livingston (Liv) Taylor, who doesn’t have to take a back seat to his more famous brother. Give him a listen if you can. Cheers!
Just knocked out at the beauty of his voice, the sincerity of his lyrics, the melancholia, the beauty of his melodies... it's all so beautiful and pure & wholesome... true existential solace in a troubling world in 2024... Thank you James Taylor, you make this world a better place to be in...
Me and my wife loved the Carolinas. Went there for 30 years. She has recently passed away and this song brings her back to me every time I hear it. Thank you James taylor!
Is it bad that I skipped where he told the back story of this song, because I want to live in the story I made up myself? I Hope your story with your late wife can be even more magical for the words in his song. God Bless you and your Dear Wife.
I was flying back home to Nashville in August of 2008, after being away for about 6 months for some Army training down in San Antonio. I was still in uniform. It was about 10-11pm on a Friday night and the airport was mostly empty other than the passengers on my flight rushing to baggage claim. All I could think about was getting to my old friend waiting in the car outside, to get me back home about 10 mins north of town. There’s a Tootsies in the terminal. A young man is covering this song with his acoustic guitar. I stop walking and I’m absolutely captivated by the beauty of the lyrics and the music. He finished off with the fading of “say nice things about me…” and that moment hit me so hard. I still get emotional and so vividly go back to that moment when I hear this song. I was back in Nashville. My hometown. Where even the late night airport cover bands can make magic happen with their talents and stop a soldier from racing to baggage claim after being gone for so long. But whatta testament to James’ songwriting and artistry.
I was driving and my son shouldn’t had the most perfect voice I had ever heard. But he did and it was this song. I will always love him when I hear it.
This man has something of special...the sweetness of voice, the way to play arpeggios on guitar...there is really just one James Taylor in the world...and we are lucky to have him
All of your music was playing at my sister's memorial. She had your music on her iPad. She went to any concert she could with roses in hand hoping to just say hello. She died very young but never stopped believing she could meet you.
This song is so evocative for me. It takes me back to 1970, summer delivering mail at Grand Central Station, concerts in Central Park after work, the noonday sun on Park Avenue, the smell of the September air visiting friends in my first trip to Brooklyn, hearing on the news that Jimi Hendrix had died. Hearing "Fire and Rain"on the radio was a life-changing experience, signaling an era where singers would tell stories about their lives, their struggles and their relationships in a way no one had ever done before.
So we'll said thank you for sharingyour thoughts! What I love about him as a musician is he's such a wonderful story teller ! Thank goodness to utube for allowing us to share these concerts w/ friends and family ••`~\|•°•\••°
What amazes me is how Mr Taylor can sound so timeless playing and singing songs we have all enjoyed for so many years and yet present these tunes today with the maturity of voice and playing that brings new life to these beloved songs
Such a total joy to hear this man play and sing. Loved him when I was in my youth and still love him as a pensioner! Thank God we didn't lose this charming human being to addictions that robbed us of too many of his contemporaries.
James came very, very close to making the all too early exit, as so many other extraordinary talents have. He called out for help, his Dad dropped everything & went for him...most likely saving his life. Thanks Dad! ❤️🎶
What a wonderful few minutes of storytelling, humor and memories. Not every day one gets to see such a great poet speak, reminisce and sing. Always terrific to spend the time with the great James Taylor. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you James Taylor. Beautiful voice, and beautiful guitar playing. 95% perspiration, 5% inspiration and 100% a legend of your profession! At 56 I keep coming back to the outstanding journey men of music. You speak the truth and honesty which appears lost in todays social media driven world. Thank you James, please never stop! Beautiful
I just graduated from UNC Chapel Hill this spring, and this song was performed during our ceremony. I might not be old enough to know much about James Taylor, but this song moved me deeply. I truly appreciate this piece. Congratulations, Class of 2024! 🩵
Here’s one you might have heard, written and performed by a group of UNC grads … m.ua-cam.com/video/2KwKJIcV6eY/v-deo.html&pp=ygUWbWlwc28gY2Fyb2xpbmEgY2FsbGluZw%3D%3D
I graduated from NCSU in 1971. James Taylor used to sing some nights in the Raleigh Rose Garden. He was just a kid like us then and we had know clue what a legend he would become. Great performer and human being!
This song was my anthem in the 1980s when I was living in Virginia in my 1st (& abusive) marriage - I would cry when I played it, wishing I was back home in NC. And I finally got away & played this over & over while driving back to my home in NC!
Me too ! The sadest years of my life ! I was so nice and beautiful! Working , having two daughters ,but I was torn in my mother in law eyes ! Iliterate one , but maried with my father in law , as rich girl. My husband become a drunkard ! As he get older it was like I am living in hell . She was never stopping to act like she is the boss ! As I was conservative , stud in that hell for 27 years waiting for my daughters diplome ! Now I am OK out of my town among unknown people all together free with my daughters families ! Still afected why it happened to me ! Mising my town but I cannot stand to be unhappy again ! I am having it in my mind only !
Thank you for sharing your gift and your soul with us, James Taylor. I have been a fan since forever ago...thank you for making my life better and giving me happy tears when i hear your voice! God bless you and hold you close always!
he is such a gift to the world... sweet voice. amazing lyrics and a really slick guitar player ... its not really hard to like james taylor ... very special man , gifted writer and artist
I have loved this man since I was a young teenager, now seventy eight. Saw him in Texas about twenty years ago. He’s still handsome and love his music still!😊
This song reminds me of my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost battling cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I never missed a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times but sometimes I wonder why bad things always happen to good people
I've always loved this song. His voice is as beautiful and clear as it ever was, and his ability to weave an image through music is unparalleled. I walk through the places of the past through my mind when I listen to this song.
Ever since I heard this song for the first time, I can remember it having an impact on me. I used to hear this song come on the radio while I was at work, where I waited tables a local restaurant when I was in my early twenties. It would come on fairly regularly and every time it did, I would try and tune out the noise of the restaurant and stop and listen for a moment. Theres just something about this song that no matter what I’m doing, it always helps me to leave the present and take a time machine back to the past. For me, the best songs are the ones that can take you to another place just like Carolina in my mind does. Thanks for that, James.
It’s 1970. In my Lewis&Clark College dorm room. Listening to James Taylor. It all comes back so clearly. It was a time of exploding number of folk artists writing and singing what would turn out to be timeless classics.
I am in my 70's now, lately I hear the highway calling...thank you James. I am hoping the America to come can find the innocence and a bit of righteousness that it once had that gave birth to you.
Absolutely brilliant performance from a true and unique musical genius. And such a nice guy, too. If James ever fancied diversifying, he would make a fabulous standup comedian - his timing and delivery are faultless! The world is a much better place because of people like this.
After all these years, he's still got it! What an artist, songwriter, musician and entertainer! No one can touch your heart and soul with his music like James Taylor!!
Timeless. I met a girl in Jerusalem on the Mount of Olives one morning, and for the brief time we were together, we connected. I have no picture, no mugshot, but I wrote a poem when I got home. Some things happen in life to sprinkle magic, but like snowflakes, are soon gone. Still, a lovely memory.
Life is so hectic, but James Taylor is one of only a handful of recording artists/singers that put me at peace almost immediately. So glad he’s been and always will be a part of my musical life. ‘Love Always’ Luke 6:27
I'm 52yrs old been a James Taylor fan since I was 2yrs old. Had the opportunity to meet him and have a guitar signed by him..what u see is what u get when you meet him💕💕💕💕
Tears ....every single time I hear him sing this song. So many sweet Carolina memories come flooding back and my whole Carolina experience is characterized and captured within these melodic and chordal movements. Sweet Baby James does the same thing to me....every time.
Never met the man but seams like a nice guy and makes incredible music that sounds great today as it did fifty years ago. Thanks for all the memories they’re all good.
I began taking a few guitar lessons at about 12 yrs old. The effortless style of James Taylor was a fight for me and I came to believe I would never pick it up. Although I never really felt good enough I did manage to learn more by ear than lessons and i ended up quitting after about 6 lessons. James Taylor and Dan Fogelberg (RIP) continue to be my musical inspiration both for their amazing lyrical talents as well as their unique guitar talents. James has little nuances in his playing such that one can usually pick out the song playing as one of His without him singing yet. Yet, his angelic voice and relaxed tone give him away shortly. When i begin to lose motivation to continue playing, usually due to my physical or emotional suffering, listening to James Taylor brings my motivation back quickly and reminds me of the reason i love music. Although I may never achieve the talent he has been given from God and hard work, his music reminds me that we are all given various unique talents meant to be shared and some of us, like James, are given talents that it must be considered a sin if we fail to share with all those around us. Thank you James Taylor for being one of God’s angels walking among us. Honestly your music is a relief from all the wickedness around us in a world I have witnessed continue to deteriorate, while your music remains a constant source of beauty and goodness and a witness of God’s love by sending you to us. God Bless You James.
This song still brings me tears. James Taylor is a national treasure. I certainly treasure everything about him. He calms me. He is everything I need to get through each day. I named my oldest son James, for James Taylor and James Stewart.
I'm from the south and stuck out west and this song just makes it all spill over. I miss it so bad. Nobody past present or future even approaches the style of James Taylor
There is very little in life that can make you feel so refined and alleviated. And your life passes right by your eyes within the 5 mins he sings this song. A humble man, yet his music is testament to the spiritual side of life, the human in us, and how bare simplicity can be as joyful as anything else that ever was. James' songs are really another form of worship to all things beautiful and bright.
dear James you've kept me company through the lonely years and your music has the same effect and perhaps even stronger now that i'm older - your music's the tapestry of my adolescence, grateful thank you, btw your voice and aura have not changed at all, filled with serenity
I was 12 yrs. old when I learned this song as my very first song on the guitar. I'd play it over and over again, until the wee hours of the night. It drove my parents nuts, but because my father was a music teacher and my mother was classically trained, they tolerated my persistence. LOL.
We can only hope that at least 1 of his twin boys wiill carry dard's precious lyrics + melodies into the future, as part of his already created and enduring legacy. Maybe both boys will....
I've been a fan for 40+ years. Basically since I was old enough to buy a turntable. You are like fine wine. You just get better with age! Didn't realize until lately that you were a comedian as well. Love this.
I watched JT played live in Adelaide Festival theatre when I was 22 yo, it had an excellent acoustics, altho I was seated somewhere midway up the theatre, but I remembered it like JT played right in front of me, the songs remain crystal clear till today, am now 62. I could now play almost all JT hits by myself now, learnt myself to play his songs.
I graduated in 1973 and you have some of the best songs. Thank you so much. I lived with my sister at the time and her boyfriend, thank goodness for your songs Because of the time and she went to work her boyfriend chased me around. I did not do anything but run from him. he apologized and your songs really help me. Thank you.
Spring of my freshman year 1970 at UNC I watched you play Fire and Rain the first time outside the recording studio during Jubilee. Thank you for taking me back to that day 52 years ago. Carolina is always in my mind!
"We come onstage, well rehearsed and in good shape, and repeat what we have done before as best we can. But the real goal is to be in the present moment and on the surface of ourselves; open and trusting. Nobody wants to be perfect: that’s frozen, dead…It’s “be here now”, I guess…" Love this! So applicable to performing, teaching, to life, really. James, I'm hanging this one on the wall to remind myself to "be here now" with my students. Thanks for even more inspiration!
Happy Birthday, dear Mr. Taylor. I've been listening to your songs since I was a teenager living in the ex-Soviet Georgia. That was 40 years ago. I love you dearly. Thank you for the love and joy you bring in this world! You are a national treasure and we've been blessed to have you!
He still got it! Those in the audience are so lucky to experience such a great concert experience. At this stage in his life nothing to prove, its not about the money. Just show up with a guitar and mike and play music like the old days, and blow people away how good he sounds.
I’m 59 now an I still cry when I hear just the first verse of this song. In 1999 I played this tape for my dad while he had chemo treatments. We called it out James Taylor concerts. It is such a strange sweetness that someone you never knew can reach a place on such sweet intimacy that you feel they know you.

Such a poet. I can imagine a 73 year old Scandinavian woman hearing this story and song, smiling knowingly, brought back to the sunshine, sea air, and a young man long ago.
Isn't it ashamed though
Yes.
I was hoping she would have shown up and said a fond howdy do sometime to him.
I hope she seen this...!!!
I think he said one time that she had died?
He doesn’t care about fame or fortune. He just sings from his heart and it shows in his music. One of the best musicians on earth
So much like Jackson Brown and John Prime. Let's not forget Bonnie Raitt. So wonderful to know others appreciate the same
In their own respective rites, all those who reach us with their excellence and evokation, are great!
Exactly. He sounds the same in concert too. So worth the opportunity to see him live if you get the chance.
I wonder why then he became so wealthy charging people for his records and concerts if that were remotely true…
@@megastick9324 Wouldn't you do the same?
I’m just happy to be on this earth at the same time as James Taylor.

Such a total joy to hear this man play and sing. Loved him when I was in my youth and still love him as a pensioner! Thank God we didn't lose this charming human being to addictions that robbed us of too many of his contemporaries.
Been listening to JT for 50+ years. 👊🏻
James came very, very close to making the all too early exit, as so many other extraordinary talents have. He called out for help, his Dad dropped everything & went for him...most likely saving his life. Thanks Dad! ❤️🎶
This man was born to do exactly what he's still doing , blessing us all with his gift, amazing musician/song writer, thx for the memories James :)
U
This voice warms my soul. Even through tears I still feel oddly comforted. Thank you and God bless you JT.
Congrats and GO HEELS🩵🤍
Here’s one you might have heard, written and performed by a group of UNC grads …

It's good you left when you did. Hope you did better in NC. Best!
As I was conservative ,
stud in that hell for 27 years waiting for my daughters diplome !
Now I am OK out of my town among unknown people all together free with my daughters families !
Still afected why it happened to me !
Mising my town but I cannot stand to be unhappy again !
I am having it in my mind only !
❤❤❤
Welcome home.
Your own health is the most important thing. Godspeed.
Thank you for sharing your gift and your soul with us, James Taylor. I have been a fan since forever ago...thank you for making my life better and giving me happy tears when i hear your voice! God bless you and hold you close always!
My opinion the best music song writer ever, hands down. Their is something very special about your music that is unexplainable. Thanks James 🙏
Hes special in a way the newbies can never be. His music heals and comforts. Thats what singing and music should be all about. ❤
Yes! Amazing sweet bard of a lifetime
Having seen him perform so many times, it’s always struck me how there’s something hypnotic about his singing
All these years and it still chokes me up…..a magical tune by a master musician and storyteller……breathtaking…..
he is such a gift to the world... sweet voice. amazing lyrics and a really slick guitar player ... its not really hard to like james taylor ... very special man , gifted writer and artist
I've been through many difficult times with James Taylor's music helping me. Been listening to him since 1970 and, and hes still the best
I'm blessed to be able to see this guy perform. Always been in my life since the early 70's.
Still has one of the most beautiful voices. An amazing singer. Truly special.
I am in my 70's now, lately I hear the highway calling...thank you James. I am hoping the America to come can find the innocence and a bit of righteousness that it once had that gave birth to you.
My favorite song. I want this played at my funeral. Thanks James. I love all your songs.
I just flat out love James Taylor, no-one comes close to this man's art.
Absolutely brilliant performance from a true and unique musical genius. And such a nice guy, too. If James ever fancied diversifying, he would make a fabulous standup comedian - his timing and delivery are faultless! The world is a much better place because of people like this.
i am a writer. but when it comes to the wonderful James Taylor, words fail me. thank you James, for all you are.
Have listened to your songs for fifty years
NEVER GETS OLD✅❤️❤️
The first melody and chord are a harbinger of such powerful and delicate music to come
After all these years, he's still got it!
Uh oh, I'm falling into the James Taylor musical rabbit hole 😎💛
Me too! What a great time to have been a teen!
I'm 52yrs old been a James Taylor fan since I was 2yrs old. Had the opportunity to meet him and have a guitar signed by him..what u see is what u get when you meet him💕💕💕💕
The most beautiful version of this song - I think. Love it.
Tears ....every single time I hear him sing this song. So many sweet Carolina memories come flooding back and my whole Carolina experience is characterized and captured within these melodic and chordal movements. Sweet Baby James does the same thing to me....every time.
Does this man even know how loved he is!!! He has brought so much joy to my life and to the lives of so many!!!!
Thank you James. 💜
James Taylor, one of the greatest singers whom I never get tired of listening to !
Simply adorable ! 😍❤️
Never met the man but seams like a nice guy and makes incredible music that sounds great today as it did fifty years ago. Thanks for all the memories they’re all good.
You are my musical history. Your songs touched my soul as no others. Sweet Baby James is among my remaining vinyl albums. TIMELESS!
It was one of the first that I owned
I named my oldest son James, for James Taylor and James Stewart.
listening to James brings a smile to my heart and memory every time. thank you, James.
I'm from the south and stuck out west and this song just makes it all spill over. I miss it so bad. Nobody past present or future even approaches the style of James Taylor
A magnificent musical performer for decades,a true great.
North Carolina represent! Such and awesome song. Glad I was born and raised in this great state.
I love this songs! I lived in North Carolina years ago! Good memories and beautiful countryside!
There is a place in the heart that James Taylor's music reaches in and gives a warm embrace.
What wonderful words. Apt description.
I absolutely agree with you. Great musicians are the true messengers of God
Jame's voice has never really changed over the years, he sounds as young now as he has always been.
Rather like a fine wine. It improves over time.
This man is amazing
@@jamestierney2531 yea if anything it's getting better as it changes with age, very rare talent
Guitar and James Taylor, what a Heavenly Blend !! Blessings JT 🙏
dear James you've kept me company through the lonely years and your music has the same effect and perhaps even stronger now that i'm older - your music's the tapestry of my adolescence, grateful thank you, btw your voice and aura have not changed at all, filled with serenity
I was 12 yrs. old when I learned this song as my very first song on the guitar. I'd play it over and over again, until the wee hours of the night. It drove my parents nuts, but because my father was a music teacher and my mother was classically trained, they tolerated my persistence. LOL.
recored and give us a sample
We can only hope that at least 1 of his twin boys wiill carry dard's precious lyrics + melodies into the future, as part of his already created and enduring legacy. Maybe both boys will....
Haha good job. Tough critics , but I’m sure they actually loved it. Quite the song as a first for guitar, cool.👍
Every time I hear one of his songs I cry… tears of joy.
I've been a fan for 40+ years. Basically since I was old enough to buy a turntable. You are like fine wine. You just get better with age! Didn't realize until lately that you were a comedian as well. Love this.
Beautiful song, perhaps my favorite JT song ever. Beautifully performed. Flawless. Bravo, James.
Chapel Hill, North Carolina is the greatest place on earth
As soon as James starts to play guitar and sing, you are hooked! Such a super talented artist ❤
A class act that never get’s old. Keep on going James.
