    Wow just seeing this out of the box ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxQr1yd4Zc6qJF-scTB6Zb9dQbVpviuRxB recommend I have yet to fish with this set up, but based on the first hands on appeal, I can tell this is going to change the way i pack and carry to a whole new level. If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.

    Hi... Sorry... It's been a while since I posted this. It was taken back when we were new to squid fishing. I think that was our second trip... I handle squid a whole lot differently these days. I was a full-on hack back then. These days on a good winters afternoon just before sunset the two of us can bag out in an hour in that same spot but now we drift and cast jigs and use a net.
    Species is Southern Calamari which is the best squid to eat imo.
    For those who commented on humane killing methods, I stick a filleting knife through the head right between the eyes. I didn't put that in the video because people don't like to see it but I guess you're damned if you don't and you're damned if you do.
    This was taken in 4m of water off Mount Eliza over a weed bed.
    Thanks for the nice comments!

    It's nice to see how people catch squid in different parts of the world. I grew up catching squid and I've always enjoyed it so much. You may enjoy my channel. I have a couple of videos of how we catch and clean squid in Newfoundland. Seane Rowsell

    That's not putting it to sleep. You basically just snapped its spinal cord, the part that is controlling the pigmentation in its mantle as well as its escape reflex.
    Unfortunately snapping that nerve does not do anything to kill or anesthetize the animal. The nerves you broke are highly specialized organs that only serve to facilitate the squids reflexes. It does nothing in terms of affecting the sensory perception of the squid.
    Not saying they perceive pain, I can't be sure, they're invertebrates so their behaviors and conscious aren't well understood. I'd just like to clarify that it takes a bit more to kill the squid.
    Dropping it in a bucket of icy fresh water will work, or smacking it between the eyes with something blunt.

      @porkcheeks 8 років тому +3

      +monkapotamous1 i think sleep is a euphemism for kill here. Do you have a better method? They appear to have a brain between their eyes, perhaps a squid billy or stab to destroy the brain. I haven't tried for squid but when I catch one I'd like to know how best to kill it.

    can jigs be used to catch fish to ?

    • @ShimanoAustralia
      @ShimanoAustralia  10 років тому

      Hi, it may happen but rarely so. Squid jigs are generally used only to catch squid with the by-catch of cuttlefish and octopus.

      A friend of mine caught a flathead on a squid jig once (not intentionally), it's not recommended as the fish destroys the crown hooks.
