I think The Dark Knight is the best because it's not just about Good vs Evil and how Good always win, but it put is as audience to be morally decide who is good and who is evil.
And show us how much stake would it take to be pure Good.
It show us that there can be no Good without Evil first.

dark jedi Thats what I love about Infinity war it took the same risks like the dark knight did without betraying the audience.
People are getting tired of the good guys win bad guys lose scenario.
Thanos and Joker will always be memorable villains because they beat the good guys and won.
The true Villains of infinity war are the avengers them selves, Thanos believes in his heart that what he's doing is right and when you think about it hes not a bad guy hes just trying to stop overpopulation in the universe, the same Logic applies to the Joker in the dark knight, everything joker does in that movie makes sense, Batman is the bad guy in the dark knight not the joker, the joker believes Batman is responsible for crime in Gotham.

This is what people often forget, The Dark Knight wasn't just a great Superhero movie, it was a cinematic masterpiece. A modern classic up there with the likes of There Will be Blood and No Country for Old Men, no Marvel or DCEU movie has yet matched it. I've seen some people say The Avengers was better, or Logan, or even Wonder Woman. The Avengers was only great because of the crossover aspect, Logan was only great because 9 movies preceded it, Wonder Woman was mainly lauded for gender reasons. I won't even humour the idea that Black Panther was better. Take away the political and legacy aspect and they're just great movies. The Dark Knight was a masterpiece in and of itself.

This comment hurts my head. What movie are you watching? What about all the plot holes? The contrivances? The poorly directed action scenes? The movie has no pulse whenever the Joker is off screen. Did Heath Ledger give an amazing Joker performance? Hell yes. But besides that? You compare this with a true masterpiece like No Country for Old Men? And There Will Be Blood? The Dark Knight is a decent movie. It's meh. Without Ledger's Joker? It's worse. There are sooo many friggin plot holes in this movie. Soo many poorly directed action beats. The big Chase scene in non sense. There's no internal logic to it. It's just random bleh. You want a great Batman movie? Watch Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. It's 100X better than this. I mean..Batman Begins is a better movie than TDK. This movie is poorly written(the dialogue is 50% exposition), poorly directed(Nolan has done better work elsewhere in The Prestige but he's a shit action filmmaker and needs a 2nd unit director) and not well acted beyond Heath Ledger. All the performances bar Ledger are just muted and boorish. Line delivery like "Harvey I know these briefs backwards" and then that awful dinner convo with the blonde Russian Ballet chick? Ugh...I mean you are comparing No Country for Old Men to a movie where the hero gets a finger print off of a bullet. That's right. A bullet. What!?! How does that work? Bullets have casings when last I checked. Then the playing card with the DNA on it...that's not how DNA evidence works! It's silly non sense

What really sets Nolan's films apart is that they're self contained stories. He built his Batman from the ground up and from a particular perspective which drove how he approaches telling the story. It exists in a vacuum and as such stands out more.

The Dark Knight is a great film period. That's why I find it unfair to force other superhero movies to live up to it because they aren't on the same playing field. Extended universes, jokes, no lasting consequences and never ending sagas are what prevent these movies from standing out. Releasing movies as trilogies maximum then calling it a day made good stories but of course that makes bad business, we're now watching soap operas.

    • @MachineFuckingHate
      @MachineFuckingHate 6 років тому +10

SLAMMINnJAMMIN, that is not the point. The point is that Logan proves the false assessments made in this video, where it's said that other dark and gritty movies in the superhero genre sucked because they were trying to be like The Dark Knight, but it's obvious that those movies were nothing like The Dark Knight and would be more comparable to the MCU. X-Men Origins Wolverine sucks because it's a mess that jumps at random pace from one point to another without trying to make things compelling and it heavily relies on its connections to other X-Men movies. Batman Begins was the complete opposite of that. It was very slow and deliberate. But MCU does have that problem, as seen in movies like The First Avenger and Ant-Man.

The Dark Knight is such a highly acclaimed and masterpiece of a movie because it is not just a comic book superhero movie, it is a modern film about real characters being put into real situations. It took the superhero genre, and grounded it to appeal to the general audience, and it worked flawlessly. The film has an amazing plot, strong characters (especially Ledger’s Joker), and a deep and powerful score by Zimmer. This movie deserves the praise. By that same nonexistent logic, I can say that MCU did a lot of harm, because their success forced other studios to try and replicate their formula, thus we see bland action movies trying to set up a connected universe and sharing similar tone to the MCU. Your point about DCEU shouldn't be directed at The Dark Knight. DCEU got on the wrong foot because it was trying to be like the MCU, not The Dark Knight. You can't imagine The Dark Knight having some dumb scene in the middle of the movie where a character watches pointless 5 minute footage that is meant to set up the future installments, but you can imagine that happening in the MCU. You can't imagine The Dark Knight having an important iconic character just as a cameo in the the movie, but you sure can see MCU doing that (they've been putting Thanos in pointless scenes for how many years?). Suicide Squad sucked why, exactly? Because it threw random characters at the screen with no rhyme or reason and had them fight and nothing more. Tell me, which franchise would do that, The Dark Knight or MCU? Well, judging by how Spider-Man was introduced to the MCU, I think I know the answer. Seriously, fuck off.

VENOM InThAHooD, how was the DCEU trying to be like the MCU? I explained it in my original post. But if you need me to prove the same point twice, fine: 1. Darker is not an exclusive thing, and darker is not what made DCEU problematic. Tone can work in any movie if the movie is well made. 2. Batman v Superman was nothing like The Dark Knight. As I said, you'd never get scenes like Batman having visions of apocalyptic future, let alone having five-minute teaser for the Justice League right in the middle of the movie in The Dark Knight. The Dark Knight trilogy was all about building up characters and never relying on franchise-building. Franchise-building is exactly what ruined DCEU. And what franchise inspired the DCEU to do so? You know the answer. 3. By talking about how characters were introduced, you just answered your own question. The Dark Knight trilogy never, ever introduced characters like DCEU did. The Dark Knight trilogy always gave its characters reasons to be in the story. But the people behind DCEU looked at MCU and how they randomly introduce characters (as mentioned by Thanos, Spider-Man, so on), they thought they can do the same thing. 4. Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad had random scenes and random characters and were very unclear in their direction. All of that is the product of them trying to be like the MCU. If DCEU was indeed trying to follow Nolan's footsteps, Batman v Superman would not have any random dream sequences every five seconds, Wonder Woman's pointless role, and pointless franchise-building. In short, it would be a much better movie.

      1. Yeah, someone says that I don't make sense when that same person says that he did not read my reply but then says this in his reply: "And i did read your whole reply".
      2. The reason why you don't get scenes like Batman fighting Parademons in the future is because that scene serves no narrative purpose and is only there to be a seed for the future installments. Which is what The Dark Knight trilogy stands against. It was all self-contained. It didn't try to put things that have no reason to be there. The closest thing in those movies we got to the Knightmare scene was the ending of Batman Begins with the tease of the Joker, but even that was just a small nod and it happened when the movie was ending.
      3. There you go, you answered your own question. Building the universe is exactly what makes DCEU more like the MCU than TDK trilogy. The Dark Knight trilogy never had franchise-building as its main focus.
      4. Correct, The Dark Knight trilogy did not rely on franchise-building. Franchise-building and being part of the franchise are two different things. Joker's card was a small nod, never intended to be some kind plot point that was intended to set things for the future. Nobody knew if there will be a sequel. Scarecrow makes cameos only in the sequels. In the first movie, he is an established character that is integral to the plot. Complete opposite of the Joker in Suicide Squad, where it's the first movie of this Joker and he himself has nothing to do with the plot of the movie.
      5. DCEU failed because it tried to be like the MCU. Its most common criticism is that it rushed everything and tried to build a franchise without establishing its characters. The Dark Knight trilogy was all about characters and stories. If the character had no place in the story, he wasn't in the story. Which is why Nolan wrote Harvey Dent off from the original Batman Begins script and why he didn't use characters like Penquin and Killer Croc, as he couldn't see those characters working in the context of his movies. DCEU ignored Nolan's methods of filmmaking and it tried to be like the MCU, which is why we get movies like Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad. If the DCEU was indeed like The Dark Knight trilogy, it would be completely different compared to how it came out. Its so-called dark tone was brought by Zack Snyder, not Nolan. If you have seen any of the Zack Snyder movies, you know that dark and gritty is inherent in his filmmaking. All of his films are dark and gritty. Man of Steel is his least darkest film. So I hope this clears some stuff to you.

I really don't like, however, that people forget how awesome Batman Begins was. It deserves more credit. No film considered a classic is without some flaws, no film is perfect, it's about the lasting effect. Even though it had characters, gadgets and locations from the Batman mythos, TDK didn’t feel like a superhero film at all.
Either way, I think the Nolan trilogy is fantastic, all 3 films are unique and different enough to where you can appreciate them after all this time.
Nolan’s success with the trilogy not only brought back superhero films from a very low point but also showcased to the general audience that they were more than silly films for kids.

I’ve seen many videos like this and what I’ll say first is, DC’s failure to create engaging films is DC’s fault and DC’s fault only. Beyond this I’d like to add that DC has good films, however they have never been connected, the Dark knight series is one of these, the original superman is another, the Tim burton Batman films are yet another, Constantine (although this may not be a popular opinion) is another. Films never had to be connected it was Marvel’s original idea to do so. On top of this concept DC has held its own in the animated department more than enough with BTAS beginning something that would span more than a decade. With all of this in mind the failure of DC’s films should not be blamed on the aftermath of a fantastic film series it should be blamed on DC’s jealousy of Marvel’s profit and expanded cinematic universe, trying to catch up like a kid doing their homework on the bus it’s incomplete and overall misses the point

FilmNation2017 I understand our opinion about the MCU, I have heard many opinions about the franchise. I know about the thing The Dark Knight in cinema, but having that in mind didn’t stop me from feeling bored too many times during watch. I just didn’t had a very enjoyable time as I thought I might get. When I watched Infinity War, I had one of the greatest movie experiences in my life, something The Dark Knight-trilogy didn’t gave me. That movie was just the perfect type of movie for me, in my taste. It is all about taste. You can watch a movie which did something that changed cinema, but it all comes down to if you enjoyed the movie or not. The Dark Knight - trilogy is not that kind of movie in my taste. If you are wondering which movie in trilogy I prefer, it’s Batman Begins. I do not care what kind of a impact the movie made, I just care about enjoying something, and the MCU applies to me more.
Another thing, I think the MCU would still have been a success under Paramount Pictures, which they were under before Disney bought Marvel Studios, that is just my opinion.

Nice piece, but there are other factors that show how immense the continuing impact on cinema is: 1. Score; 2. IMAX Cinematography; and 3. 8p First Showings:
    1. Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard - together! Zimmer has pointed out that the reason Cap'n Jack Sparrow's character entrance was he always "plays it for real." Nolan and Zimmer were the perfect combination for that reason. Zimmer has also spoken about the main theme: It's two notes but it never resolves because Bruce Wayne is stuck in time. He's never moved on from being the kid in the alley.
    2. The Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises action sequences were filmed in IMAX - on film! That meant they weren't not only carefully choreographed to advance the story, but Nolan showed what was possible. Besides Inception and Dunkirk, you have on IMAX FILM!: Tom Cruise climbing the Burj Khalifa in MI: Ghost Protocol; The Hunger Games: Catching Fire jungle scenes in Hawaii, etc. (add more in your replies, please).
    3. Earlier Showings on Thursdays: The joker tragically inspired the massacre at the Century Theater in Aurora, Colorado during the midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises. The shooting began as soon as the first gunfire when Bane takes down the plane. I live in Denver so there is much more to say about the victims and the impact on our community. Not just here, but universally, far fewer people had the full cinematic experience in IMAX because they didn't feel safe sitting in the IMAX and stadium style seating that is set up like a shooting gallery. What all of the world has felt, is the first showing time of all movies moved up to 10p and then 8p. First, for security and availability of emergency services. Second, there was a massive downturn in theater attendance all across the United States that summer, and it never really recovered once moviegoers found that watching movies at home was just fine. Once the theater industry found it was indeed more profitable to have evening showing, the time is creeping ever earlier for the first showing times.

TDKR is unfairly written off by people considering it has themes in it that resonate far more with the times that we are in than any other comic book film (it effectively foresaw the rise of Trump and charlatans winning over the majority, promoting isolation, persuading the public to 'take back control' and creating some quasi-protest movement which is really there to only benefit the few aka Brexit). As great as TDK is there are far too many flaws with that film for it to be described as a 'masterpiece'.

The Dark Knight is my favorite movie of all time and I do believe it’s one of the best films this generation has seen. However, can we stop constantly comparing superhero movies to TDK. I’m tired of hearing “oh that was a great movie but no TDK”? If you keep trying to measure other movies up to TDK you will never be satisfied. Instead look at how the movie stands on its own. Determine the quality of storytelling, acting performances, writing, dialogue and etc. And this not only falls on the audience but the studios as well. Stop trying to create another TDK. I don’t want another TDK! I just want to watch a great movie that impacts my thoughts and ideas. Make a film that forces you to ask yourself “is this choice going to serve a purpose to the story or is it just for show?”. Otherwise, you’ll just create meaningless garbage. And that goes for all movies.
Edit: Some comparison between movies to help determine the quality of a film is good, but TDK does not always need to be the gold standard for every superhero film.

nolan's films are so good because they are filmed as actual movies with the emphasis on character and emotion. The focus is not for big action set pieces or typical HERO stuff. When you actually watch the movies again you will realize Batman does very little in the grand scheme of things. It makes the action moments stand out more because of it. Most of the time it is him as Bruce Wayne and how he interacts with the world around him. Dark Knight rises had batman out of commission for almost the whole damn film but still worked because the character interactions worked. Nolan utilized the skills of the actors he had chosen and let their performance carry the film, you don't get Neeson to just be a forgettable throw away, you don't cast michael caine to be your typical butler with no purpose or heart, you don't cast gary oldman if you plan to have gordon just be an angry cop that shows up once and awhile. All the characters had good development and scenes which let their actors shine. Most superhero films are to concerned with action set pieces.

Time for people to hate me: is the dark knight a great movie? Yes. Is it a great superhero movie? Yes. Is health ledgers joker one of the greatest modern performances? Yes. Does the film have powerful themes? Yes. Did the film resonate and engage with a large audience? Yes (always a basis of the movie coming out at the right time in the right moment). Does this automatically make the film a masterpiece? No. Is the film a masterpiece? No. Does is it have flaws? Yes. Contrary to popular belief, it’s script and the plot logic is not air tight. It just moves so fast that it doesn’t give you a chance to spot the numerous holes on your first watch. Does the film stand above all comic book movies? No. While it does occupy a spot in the top bunch, I’m of the opinion that there are plenty of films, comic adaptations or otherwise, that meet or exceed the dark knight.
Is the dark knight a great movie and do I love it? Yes. But I am getting tired of people saying that it’s a flawless masterpiece. It has flaws and holes like any other film. To me, this is just another good film. Not the gift from the gods to be placed on a pedestal like the Internet seems to think

TDK is way overrated. It could be argued that Iron Man was a better pacesetter for comic book movies since it’s style and tone spawned a series of aesthetically and financially successful movies. TDK spawned movies that have nearly ruined venerable franchises like Superman. I could swear the vid said one of the great things about TDK was that we weren’t looking for the next thing? That makes no sense. Additionally, TDK did have a sequel just like the Marvel movies. You’ve consumed the Kook-Aid, bruh. Heath Ledger was the best thing about the movie.

Dark Knight fans are so full of their own shit.
0:43 No, it didn't.. the trend of dark gritty comic book films was big before TDK came around.. _Nolan was a follower not an leader!_
Infact, *everything* at that time was trying to be dark.. Spider-Man & the Fantastic Four were literally the only light comic films during that period.
_When will the lies stop Dark Knight fans? When??_
The truth is that TDK is a mediocre crime drama & the only reason people remember it at all is because Ledger gave the performance of his career and tragically died shortly after.

If Zack thinks that dark and gritty is what made TDK amazing, then he must not have seen the whole film. I recently saw it at a 10th anniversary screening and I was surprised at how many jokes were in the film. I had seen it so many times I guess I forgot how much humor is snuck into it. There’s enough comedy to keep the audience from hanging themselves, and enough tension and darkness to make the film memorable and impacting. Exactly what it needed to be.

I'd say Avengers had a much larger cultural impact. Maybe too large. Look at the box office, and how all studios tried to emulate the shared universe formula (and failed). Look at how D-list heroes that no one cared about are now household names. Also comparing the Nolan trilogy to the Russo Trilogy (so far); Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, is fair game.

Considering all 3, and I love them all, Christian Bale is one of the best actors of this generation for starters. I actually like Batman Begins (first), and The Dark Knight Rises (3rd) a little better than the middle film. Supporting performances, I would argue that Anne Hathaway’s portrayal of Catwoman rivals Ledger’s of Joker. Besides, whichever movie of the 3, has Maggie Gyllenhaal or Aaron Eckart in it, must be the least...they’re terrible, and their poor performances are always overlooked by those who declare The Dark Knight to be the best of the 3.

No it hasn’t. Nolan did what has been done in Hollywood for decades. He made a trilogy with a beginning, middle and end. Anyone trying to follow that is not Nolan’s fault. It’s the fault of the director and producers who are doing a poor job copying him. As for the MCU, that project was a major risk that no one knew would actually work because it had never been done before in cinema. And Marvel/Disney are the only ones to make this work with amazing success. But everyone else who tried to copy them, such as the DCEU and the Dark Universe have failed epically, (except Wonder Woman), so a shared universe is not a guaranteed success either. And that’s the fault of the producers and director (and Tom Cruise) for not copying Marvel properly.
So really Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy (especially the first two films) and the MCU shared universe (most films) were major successes because they were done very well, with passion and for the right reasons. It’s the awful copy cats who are ruining everything.
    Great video and question btw.

Yes, the Dark Knight is a masterpiece - the best movie of the 'noughts', together with the LOTR trilogy. I do think, however, that 'Rises' deserves far more praise than it gets. But The Dark Knight is still by far the best. The only other movie that managed to get a little bit of the same feel would be Logan. It's not as good as TDK, but it's a very good movie in it's own right and very different from the usual superhero stuff.
As for Marvel, they are brilliant in connecting all the movies together. Probably the greatest thing about them is that the actors seem to have a genuinly good time being in them, and there's usually great chemistry between them. You can see it clearly in The Avengers and Guardians Of The Galaxy. In fact, for some time I thought that GOTG is the true successor of the Star Wars OT, ,but I was mistaken: GOTG obviously stands firmly on it's own.
I do hope the DCEU get's it act together again. It's been a long time since they've delivered a truly good movie - even Wonder Woman was very mediocre with a very predictable story and some embarrassingly poor CGI scenes. It was only saved by Gal Gadot's charisma - she saved the movie (and the DCEU with it). But DC really needs another Dark Knight quality movie - or one that matches The Avengers. It won't happen as long as Zack Snyder is calling the shots. They should hire James Gunn and have him direct a more lighthearted Superman movie.

about once every ten years we get a great movie. Terminator, The Matrix, The Dark Knight... now Infinity Wars came close but it still wasn't on that level.
the thing that is missing from the Marvel movies is that they have no philosophy. after watching the Dark Knight I sat there thinking for hours about what is it that makes a hero, maybe the joker was right...
20 years after watching the Matrix I still think about what is real, how do I make a choice and many more things(this movie changed my life!)
after a Marvel movie, I go eat a pizza and watch some porn

Wait so your argument is the Dark Knight has done more harm than good because no other film has reasonably been to match it? Would you prefer that movies be purposefully mediocre so that they're easily matched? Do you even understand the entertainment business? Markets involve competition between suppliers. Suppliers try to come up with the best products, which is what Nolan did and people paid to watch it. It's not Nolan's problem that other filmmakers can't replicate the critical and commercial results of The Dark Knight. If you as a filmmaker want the title of the top spot you have to earn it. Nobody owes you anything, you're entitled to nothing. What Nolan did was set higher standards which benefits movie goers. If no one sets higher standards suppliers become complacent, and quality suffers while prices go up. Fortunately for us there seems to always be someone to raise the bar given enough time, so if it wasn't Nolan it would be someone else.
I realize you aren't arguing from a position of economic principle, but economic principles still apply. What makes "good" art if art is entirely subjective? All we really have to go on is public opinion. People vote with their wallets. Get a list of like 100 of the movies with the best ratings and find 100 movies with the highest revenues recorded. Make a third list using the films founded on both lists and calculate a composite score using both metrics. Movies with the highest composite are the best movies.

The Dark Knight was more then a superhero movie, it was a return to form of masterfilm making that transcended the Movie itself. Nolans spared no detail, the film was put together with the precision of a Brain Surgeon, Every shot, crafted with detail and meaning, The actors chosen, the music, and the script were all done masterfully. The film is a throwback to Hitchcocks and kubrick storytelling and mystic. All of his work has been done in that vain.
