You understand nothing...0. The sequel (or the later seasons in the case of a TV show) are finally the time when the actors & directors usually get paid. I'm not saying it makes a better product, I'm just saying it's reality. Didn't these people deserve to get paid more for producing a billion dollars the first time. Yes, but the studio shafted them with a mediocre contract. Now they finally get paid. Look at all the one hit wonders in music, why weren't they able to do it a second time? Because they only had one idea. 1) Arthur Fleck was too weak and whiny and not intelligent enough to be the actual Joker. 2) The arc of the movie was not bad. Let's get rid of this loser, so the real Joker can come forth 3) ...forget the musical 4) ...forget Lady Gaga. She's average looking and slightly corpulent 5) Many women have hybristophilia (attracted to violent men). It is on a continuum between spanking and serial killers. A man must be able to handle situations. 6) Typically, women don't love men for interests, morality, ethics.... just what they accomplish. In this case, fame & violence. 7) Doppelgangers... if you're going to have a psycho girl, then don't make her Harley Quinn, since Arthur Fleck was not the Joker. There are plenty of women with hybristophilia.
@@Menstral ...Huh? Phoenix made 4.5 million dollars for the first film. That's not exactly chump change, even if he made almost 5x as much for this film. Todd Philips made 100 million from the first film. You are the one who doesn't understand anything. All the grips, assistants, secondary cast members and background cast would have made the same regardless, because that's how the industry works. There isn't much info out there about producer salaries for the first film, but rest assured they were paid well. Even if it was low budget it was a full production studio, not an indie project. You want to liken a movie with actors like Phoenix and De Niro in it to a TV show with a bunch of no names or legacy television personalities?
Harley should have been a therapist like the original ... having the Joker turn around a stable PhD smart lonely insecure girl makes him more menacing and "close to home" instead them just being two broken people inspired by each other ..
I thought the most interesting part of Dr Harleen Quinzel's arc is the psychological aspect of how a smart educated person can get manipulated into insanity

I don't mind making it into a musical, it's a bold gambling decision but if they could pull it off good enough, then I could be satisfied by the movie. It is something new and original to the character so why not? And I'm probably saying this because I do have a huge bias on musicals unlike other people 🤷
I mean I kind of agree but the only sequels he ever made were the hangover sequels, nothing else he directed ever had a sequel. But yeah, those sequels were unnecessary.
Yeah pretty much. I was like: Me: Damn this sounds cool oh wait…musical??. Me: Absolute confusion Literally the 2 fundamental genres (I would say) comedy and tragedy somehow are meant to work in tandum with a musical and thriller Yeah that ain’t gonna work
It's like the riddler from The Batman is the sad reality behind the fantasy in his head that is the Joker movie. And in the sequel he finally gets laid. For real this time.
@@yaqinmalul6467 well but it is connected, it's the sequel. Or do mean that we should say that because it is absolutely not worth to be the sequel to the first movie?
That part also got me. How do you make the character regress when the entire point of the first movie was to see why he rose in the first place? It's so counterintuitive! These people should really get major fans who "get it" to be involved in a very early conceptual version of this type of movie so it can be saved before it is even made. I'm annoyed this got such a low rating.
this is what happens when you put people in charge that didnt even understand the message of the first movie at all and just wanted to do their own thing, oh wait, that sounds familiar to me
@@spill1t One lame justification I tend to see with these kinds of films (revolving around villains) is that people want to say, "But the audience won't want to cheer for the villain." Like, dumbass, that's what we signed up for! We do want the villain to be the villain that we are fans of! The first movie ended perfectly with showing us that "Arthur Fleck" is no more. It's just the Joker. Going back on it instead of going full speed ahead is massively frustrating.
Am I the only one who is absolutely sick of Harley Quinn. They took a good character and just ran her into the ground with so many obnoxious versions that I just don't want to see her anymore. The original version is the only one I give a shit about anymore.
I’m sick of them trying to make Harley Quinn a heroic character or an anti-hero instead of a villain because if her popularity. And to this movie’s credit: Harley Quinn is a blatantly bad person in this movie and not some “misunderstood” or manipulated girl
@@ZacTheFirstCuz women aren't allowed to be full villains anymore cuz current year. Every female villain is becoming an anti hero. They even made puppy killing Cruela an anti hero. wtf
Yeah she's so boring I do not get the hype, she's just annoying and people always say "She's supposed to be annoying" but why would that make me enjoy her as a character?? They push SO HARD to make her DC's Deadpool essentially and it just doesn't work, she doesn't have the star power even if Margot Robbie as the character is pretty fun, hence why she's better in the Suicide Squad movies. She's a side character. They keep trying to force her to be more.
The sad part, is that a movie with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Ga Ga directed by Todd Philips has a lot of potential. They could have done an actor/director focused original film that capitalized on the success of the Joker, but was still its own thing. The first Joker movie took off, because it was an actor and director focused movie, Trojan Horsing as a franchise movie. Getting all of that talent together, only to do a worse sequel really feels like everyone involved learned the wrong lessons, especially Hollywood.
I've been saying this as well. If any "sequel" then DC should've hopped on the anthology villian train. Lex Luthor would be GREAT. Then, a third film would be another grounded take on a DC villain.
Wow I found this amusing JJ is usually awesome but this one is a bad review from him, if you watch his reviews he didn't actually "review" the movie, he gave his opinion based on his expectations and preferences.
I mean Gaga is a great actress but it's like she can't separate her professions. Even when she's acting in a movie she still needs to sing something. We freaking know who you are bro 😂
Funny how are you seeing this as a problem in the sequel when in the first film they had kid Bruce interact with Joker for no fucking reason . Not to mention the stupid ass side plot of Thomas Wayne being the "Father" of Arthur. The first movie was bad enough, no wonder the sequel was shit
@shivankawana5420 There was always the possibility to pass that up as Fleck not being the actual Joker but instead just inspiration or something (ironic now), but you don't really have that with Dent. Like, this is just Dent. No way around it. No way to write past it.
One of the same mistakes the Gotham TV series made. Having an adult Harvey Dent who is like 24 when Bruce is 10. Then they cut him out of the show entirely after about 5 episodes and he was never seen again.
@@Peter_Pans_Labyrinth I get where you are coming from , but the interaction between those two characters went nowhere . On a second watch , the first movie is obsessed with Thomas Wayne for no reason at all . Arthur confronting Thomas in the washroom asking him if he is his father was pure cringe
I want to ask about the ending, because I don't care enough to see this movie, but enough to weed through the multiple endings that has cropped up over the last few days, but, idk how to even phrase it without major spoilers.
I went to see this today, and personally, i really loved it. It was moody, gritty and i interpreted the musical numbers to be delusions inside Arthur's Mind. I think the backing violin(?) Music added to the misery of the whole thing too. Real brooding stuff in my opinion. I hope to buy this when it comes out, and watch both back to back, and see how they translate as one long narrative.
Yup, people got too easily taken out by the musical numbers. For me, as a music nerd, I actually enjoyed most of the numbers and the distorted and unkempt nature of some of them were interpreted as the evocation of Arthur's own disjointed mind. There are a couple truly touching musical moments, like when he started singing in the interview. I did find it a bit obnoxious the Sonny & Cher references, but I get the reasons Phillips used them.

I was expecting the Joker sequel to be Joker gaining a lot of connections being in Arkham. Locking him up actually launched him to mafia boss level. Harley was just one of his many manipulated followers.
Joker shoulda rocked into Arkham a completely new man and just got scarier with every scene. Have all the guards hate him and want to bring him low but everything they try he flips and laughs in their face cuz he truly doesn't give a f*ck so they get more and more nervous and powerless. Have that galvanize all the other inmates to the the horror of the guards/faculty until it all culminates in a riot/bloodbath and them all turning loose on Gotham. Have a series of scenes where he interacts with all the other inmates one on one (a veritable who's who of the Rogue's Gallery). Have Joker immediately identify their weak points, shove it in their faces and spin it like he's doing them a favour to make them better, smarter, stronger, more confident etc. while laying the psychological breadcrumbs for them to pin all the blame for their issues on the guards/faculty/institution/society etc. Like have it so Joker's psychotic delusion is a character of it's own spreading throughout the place like a mind-virus eroding ppl's self awareness and personal responsibility more and more causing them to become more unhinged like him but no matter how bad they get he one-ups them every time so they fear and follow him. A cult leader amping them all up. Oh the slow burn tension you could have done so the audience slowly come to the realization it's all a plan to create the perfect conditions for a riot. Hell you could have made it so all those interactions between Joker and others and the subsequent interactions between them and the ppl they blamed for their problems culminate in Joker acquiring all the materials and conditions necessary to facilitate the break-out. Like a reverse heist movie combined with a prison break film where the object isn't to get someone into the vault but everyone out of the facility. Then the climax is something absolutely insane where he loses it and does something so f*cked it sets off the powder keg he created and they all snap and everyone else panics. The slow degradation of order and civility into complete and utter chaos and catastrophe kinda in the same vein as the movie Deepwater Horizon. You know where all the little things build up until the SHTF. But they had to virtue-signal so they didn't get Gina Carano'd for supporting the "right wing incels" (actual comic book fans that understand the characters and IP and just like a good villain without identifying with him on a personal level like the identity politics pushing executives, activists and entertainment media propagandists they ended up kowtowing to)

Your idea sounds good, but I reckon if they hired "some decent fan based writers" and filmmakers for the first one, it would have been just a generic superhero film instead of what it is. I haven't seen these yet, but that first film was well liked.
I always appreciate how you convey your feelings clearly without spoiling the movie, Jeremy. The movie sounds like what I was dreading, aka an unnecessary mess.
Aggressively so. Todd Phillips seems truly pissed by the success of the first film. I feel like he actively sabotaged this film much like the the story goes with matrix 4.
Matrix 4 is hilarious when you realize Wachoski was taking the piss the whole time. It was like spiking the ball. It's a parody of pointless modern day sequels disguised as a real movie. She purposefully tanked it to dissuade Warner Bros from making any more. Basically, she was forced to make and was like, "Fine. 🖕 you, WB."
Called it! The moment they turned it into a musical i knew it was over. I got into a heated debate with people who said i was being too judgemental. Secondly, how long can Joker stand alone without the batman dynamic?
DC would never let a version of Batman appear in these movies because it would only lessen his character. Plus the first movie was only a remake of taxi driver with a clown for the protagonist
I just left the movie. What's wrong with you? This movie was perfect! I felt Arthur's pain through his songs and his desires through his imagination. BRILLIANTLY PUT TOGETHER!
The problem is not many people are attentive enough to make the connections. I went with my pals and many of them were put off by the musical numbers and instead of trying to connect the dots they simply shut their brains off and started texting or cell stuff. I LOVED that melancholy side Arthur inflected into his singing, similar to Chet Baker. It was a brilliant move, it signaled the longing of a broken man.
The director had a long Variety interview recently, and he was being awfully defensive about the budget, lol. He was like, people should be happy that he was able to get so much money out of the studio (portraying it as a moral victory that the meaniepants studio had to pay that much) and that they could hire a bunch of crewmembers who could now feed their families. What a weird couple of comebacks. As if the crew couldn't "feed their families" on the first Joker. And as if we don't all know that a bloated budget is often a sign of problems.
Limits breed creativity. When one has limited resources the most is made to compensate for things, but when given too much resources, they often don't know whattodo and waste it on thigns taht dont matter
It's amazing just how bad and insulting this movie is. The budget is like 200 million and it looks great but it's truly awful anywhere it matters. It's like the movie version of sewerslide squad kill the justice league.

Most people that were complaining about this new movie, were being tagged as "incels" because every person thought that by hating on the sequel, you are precisely hating on the fact that the new movie has a woman in the big role, but people seem to forget that outside of this internet bubble that they live, opinions and conceptions can't just be undermined like this, and that by not liking a certain aspect of the movie, you're not necessarily hating on the PEOPLE that are cast for that same movie. The entire concept for this sequel from the beginning was just really not for my taste... and having it being executed in a poor way doesn't make me any excited to watch it.

My problem is that neither Joker nor Harley had a significant role in any of the film's events. They were mostly passive. Harley is mostly in the background for the 2nd half of the film. She doesn't really do much to change the outcome of anything. I think it was implied that she planned the court bombing, but Arthur gets caught about 5 mins about he escapes...sooo that was kinda pointless too.
Everyone is missing the point. The first movie showed that one person can become an icon - even if he’s a manic murderer, because people (the society) we live in outcasts/celebrates mentally ill people instead of supporting them. The second movie comments on the success of the first one - the huge support ‘Arthur’ gets from us, the audience and how we’re all disappointed when he doesn’t want to be the Joker, when he tries to grow, none of us want to accept it - we want him to remain as the murderous clown. What does that say about us? I think it’s a very clever movie, the fact people are outraged will mean in years to come it’ll be hailed as a film that captured the madness of our times.
@robertmcelwaine7024 thank you that first one was horrible I don't wanna see and joker movie without batman now they should have done a Joker movie with batman main in it but it's joker telling him and batman story from his eyes and who he thinks batman is.
Jeremy, you nailed it. Not much I can add to your excellent review. Yep, the musical numbers are tedious and don't add value to the narrative. Lady Gaga is a weak actor. A proper actor could have brought some fizzing energy to that character. Very disappointing sequel. Should have been called: Joker: The Musical.
this should have been a full fleged confident joker film breaking out of Arkham. focusing on his antics and wrecking havoc on gotham while inspiring a young Bruce to take action/train in the backdrop.. but instead the growth from the first film feels like it was done in vain.
This confirms the point I try to make when anyone suggests I watch a musical: if I wanted to listen to music I’d stay home and put on headphones, not go to the cinema
I think musical is mostly outdated. It’s from a time that people couldn’t listen to music unless they played it themselves or heard it live. It still can be done but only if done right.
Crazy thing is, the musical aspect could have been really good, If executed right. Nothing would come closer to animated Joker than him orchestrating a musical, while brutally murdering people. They could have leaned into the circus setting too.

The original Taxi Driver was a much better movie for me, the reason Todd's remake made so much box office is because he just changed Travis Bickle to Joker and everyone fell for it. Next we'll get remakes of Dirty Harry, French Connection, Scarface, Escape from NY, The Shining but with the main characters switched out with namable super heroes / villains so that studios feel comfortable enough to greenlight them.
I didn’t mind it being a bit of a taxi driver rip off fort it suited the character well but I do get your point. With the sequel they should of just ran with their inspirations and made it more in line with scarface but instead we got a fucking musical literally what nobody wanted!

What I've got from this movie is the actual 2nd degree reading. Was probably not obvious enough... Arthur keeps building up fantasies of him doing those things. And the musical parts are part of Arthur's mind. Music makes you whole is a say that got told multiple Times in the movie. Gaga's character is what Arthur see of her. An enabler, a pure dedicated follower. Based on those, its really Arthur going on trial with himself to decide whether he wants to be Arthur or the Joker. The ending tells that. A psychopath laughing to the depressed comedian wasnt enough to make a ton of people catch Up what the movie is about. The cartoon at the beginning pretty Much tell it. Arthur wants to make people laugh to deal with his pain. But Joker is the icon, this dark passenger that gives him the ever wanted glory.
There's nothing wrong with it been a musical per se. An animated episode of Batman with Joker and Harley in Arkham doing musical numbers is about as legit as it could get. And people would wank themselves over it. Problem with this type of film is they use preexisting songs and ham fist them in. Get an actual musical writer and do proper songs exploring the characters psyche etc.

I actually felt something with the first movie. Drained, sad, I felt empathy towards Arthur. The scene where he reads his mother file and starts laughing and crying at the same time. The scene with the Wall Street guys. The talk-show. So many amazing moments. I never felt anything other than bored with this one. I actually wanted it to end. I did not like the singing, it didn't progress the story in any way, it just kept us wanting for what happens after. They could and should have gone a completely different way with this. I was really dissapointed.

Watched it last nigh. I was half way through before finally admitting to myself that I didn't care for it. So I lay back, kicked the storyline into the long grass, and just enjoyed the acting of Joaquin Phoenix, which was just so damn good. Extraordinary performance.
They made it a crappy musical because of how relatable joker was for some, and we couldn't have that. Remember how hard the media pushed the idea that people were gonna shoot up the theaters during Jokers run? "This film is emboldening incels!" And the like. It had to be shut down because.... uhh

I liked it. The subliminal messaging alone, the blocking of the actors making satanic symbols. I was lucky that I saw the movie without knowing Cage was in it and didn't even recognize him.😅
I think I would have liked it if it wasn't so hyped. Someone said it was better than Hereditary... clearly it isn't. I think a real serial killer approach would have been better, imo. It feels like an indie movie. And it's boring as hell.

4x the budget of the first. Sounds like a hot mess. Amazing how smaller budgets force folks to focus on story.
Let's get rid of this loser, so the real Joker can come forth
3) ...forget the musical
4) ...forget Lady Gaga. She's average looking and slightly corpulent
5) Many women have hybristophilia (attracted to violent men).
Big budgets are just for money laundering purposes.
Both movies equally focus on Arther’s plight.
@Menstral don't they get paid when the film does well in theaters?

So they backtracked on Joker's character growth in the first movie? That's sad.
That part also got me. How do you make the character regress when the entire point of the first movie was to see why he rose in the first place? It's so counterintuitive! They push SO HARD to make her DC's Deadpool essentially and it just doesn't work, she doesn't have the star power even if Margot Robbie as the character is pretty fun, hence why she's better in the Suicide Squad movies.
She's a side character. They keep trying to force her to be more.

Pisses me off when I see unnecessarry sequels coming out and people drooling over them. Don't even get me started on Gladiator 2.

They tried that mess 5 years ago with the first Joker movie. Words like Incel are nothing but buzzwords that lost it's meaning. Basically, it is a catch all term for people who don't like criticism from fans.
@@lancethefilmguy9392
Yup, 2019 feels forever ago now. Back when certain words still had meaning and had "pointed edges" to them.
Buzzwords have been driven into the ground by being casually thrown around and over/misused so much.
Funny enough I do see the situation around this movie to be the inverse of the first one.
Whoever comes to the defense of this turd will be ignored or scorned at best.
It’s movie fiction, what a piece of crap movie. Top 10 worst all time

Too bad hollywood only cares about "their" version instead of the actual comic version.
It’s as if they don’t put enough imagination into the writing

First Joker was solid, and honestly the trailer to this made me ponder... why?
I'll probably just wait for it to go on Netflix or something.
Like the Stones said: "You Can't Always Get What You Want", but this sequel is not THAT bad if youbtakr it as an indie film serving the purpose of closure for the first one.
Even Arthur Fleck himself fed up with the singing scenes, saw him fedup at the end of the movie... Stop singing...
Lol, my husband said the same thing. I loved the movie, the musical aspect is the “fantasy” of a mental patient. He didn’t get it. But he never liked musicals anyway and I’m a theatre geek. I personally thought it was deep and touched on how we glorify anti-heroes when those are just caricatures of a real person with real issues. It makes people feel powerful and this movie destroys the power they want to feel with reality

@@christofferjenzen78The second movie is a meta commentary on the cultural impact of the first movie. People here are upset about the direction they took with Arthur, and I think that was the point of the movie.
@@weed75black35 It certainly makes for some divisive viewing. Responses so far are hard to read, it's hard to know if people didn't like the point It's making (people hate to admit that ) or they just think the narrative is lacking. @@christofferjenzen78 I think the script itself might be a bit rushed, but the message it wanted to tell had always been there from the beginning. The second movie can come across as admonishing the culture the first movie created, but I didn't think it was made with the explicit intention of taking down Arthur. The first movie was committed to realism and so was this one. It showed a realistic outcome for Arthur's actions, though I understand it's not something the audience wanted to see.

Taxi Driver is one of the greatest films ever made. It's not even a comparison.

I don’t like musicals and I thought the first movie was very overrated. I don’t even want to watch this one on streaming lol
This is what happens when Harley Quinn isn't Harley Quinn and combined with musical. Creates a complete disaster.
I don't think Harley Quinn has been Harley Quinn in a long time.
@@changer_of_ways_999true but this movie actually did the opposite… Harley Quinn is a terrible person in this movie instead of the “misunderstood anti-hero” that they’ve been pushing for the past 10 years
