I appreciate your commitment to a correct-looking repair. When I was a kid, my father smashed the back window out of his pickup in the process of chucking in a load of firewood, and his repair plan was to buy a piece of plexiglas at the hardware store, cut it to roughly the right shape freehand with a jigsaw, and glue it in with about 85 tubes of clear bathtub caulk. (For added value, that truck's rear window _did_ have a sliding panel, and he'd only broken that panel and the fixed piece on the driver's side, so the plexiglas only filled in where those two bits had been. The part on the passenger side was still the original glass. :)

Don't forget that not everyone has the luxury of being able to order replacement parts (and/or get them delivered). I lost the trunk cover for my hatchback, I found salvage places in the US that would sell me one for $20 if I could come over to pick it up, but here in Europe it would cost me over €200 (excluding shipping!) to get one.
Not saying that applied to your dad, but sometimes a jank fix is still a fix, and keeping the wind out is more important than making an old truck look good

A mate had a mk1 Ford Fiesta back in the day. It had a completely knackered rocker cover gasket and it dribbled oil down the end of the block and onto the back of a spinning pulley REALLY badly. Because he thought it would cost more than what the car was worth to fix it he just kept adding about a pint of oil every 50ish miles. I found out about it after he'd been doing this for over 6 months !
It only took me a couple of hours (and a gasket kit that was less than the cost of the oil he'd used for his previous 100 or so miles of driving) to fix. He kept that car for about another 6 or 7 years, and in that time I welded several patches along the left hand side of it, but all the splattered oil had stopped the right hand side floor's rust dead in it's tracks.

If you ever have to do another set of seat covers. First hit up a farm supply for the new hog rings. And spray glue the foam and put a layer of cling wrap on them. It makes the covers slide on like butter.

Not sure how many times others have said this, but you're actually safer with no gloves at all when working with acetone than with those nitrile ones. It will penetrate right through the glove and have more contact time with your skin since it can't gas off as easily as it would barehanded. Neoprene or latex are a much better choice in the future. It might not be a bad idea to print off a glove chemical resistance chart for the garage so you can know what to wear when.

Impressive that you can take something as mundane as changing a window and washing a seat and make it interesting.
I also find it cool how the seat covers are completely removable. I expected them to be stitched up and not clip-on/velcro dealies.
This video also offered a lot of insight into why newer cars are so much less comfortable than older cars. The base of all these seats is just solid metal. Take apart an old car seat and all the framework (aside from the very outer edges) is entirely made up of nice springs.

Auto glass is one of those things that every time I think about doing it myself, and I price the parts, it turns out the pros are usually the same price or cheaper! The glass usually costs as much as they charge for the glass AND the install! I just had a windshield done the other day for $150 out the door!

Seeing him handling the glass-windows, reminds me on my youth.
I was working in a small steel-construction shop, The boss had one or two guys "moon-lightning" for him. He had a friend (I'll call him Mike) who came often to the shop. This guy was a Car-Mechanic, with a license to own or operate his own shop, but worked for the High-Way repair shop as the Manager of the service crew.
One day 1972 or 1973 a customer car was brought to this small shop by him that needed the front-window replaced. The Older folks may know that in those days, the rubber holding the window in place was first put on the glass, (if one thinks of the letter *H* one can get the idea, on the top came the glass on the bottom would be the sheet-metal of the car-frame. First one would put the top "H"-RUBBER on the glass, and the bottom one thin string, and crossing it at one place making sure it stays, then put the glass into the frame from the outside in the car. It was a Job needed at least 3 persons to do. And if anybody wants to know the make and model of the car: *Vauxhall Viva* good loking car at least for me...
My Boss and another guy held the Window in place on the outside, while Mike was on the inside, pulling the string so that the H-rubber would slip over the sheet-metal and secure the window in place. Took only a few minutes (or so I thought) and the job was done. Mike went outside to take a look, and on the passenger side, on the bottom was the window not correct. Mike went around the passenger side, explained that the window *would just need a **_small_** tap* and then it fits. Standing besides the car, facing the rear, with his right hand, he hit the bottom corner of the window, and his had went right through it, shattering the window in the process.
To this day, I can not forget the look on his face, as he was one guy who gave people the impression he is sooo great, and gave me all the time some stupid lines how dumb and stoopid I was, that he knows soo much and never makes any mistake. Yeah one guy over 40 years comparing himself to a 17 year teenager....
    Sorry for the long story....

On one trip back from the supermarket I had a loose trolley jack in the boot (Trunk) of my car that slam into my shopping bags while cornering. it punctured the sides of 4 cans in a 24 pack of larger, and they sprayed their contents EVERYWHERE in there ! It was soaked into the carpet, splattered up the plastic sides, the carpet on the back of the rear seats, and even got into the felt like material on the underside of the parcel shelf. A lot of it also ran underneath the false floor, got all over the spare wheel, and sloshed about enough to pretty much coat every bit of exposed metal under there.
4 cans may not sound much, but they were pint cans, so it's still around 2 litres of frothy fluid getting sprayed about !
Until I'd stripped out every piece of trim from the back of that car, JET WASHED it all, then scrubbed everything I couldn't remove, I'd see friends get in my car, then start sniffing the air, and look at me as if to gauge if I might be (As the smell indicated) pissed as a newt ! :D
Even a couple years later, on hot days I'd still catch a faint smell of stale larger when getting into that car. :)

I used to put in these plastic and padding-covered interior panels into cars at the assembly line. They either went in perfectly smoothly or you had to futz around with the tabs endlessly to get them to allign properly. There was no inbetween.

Use an extractor on that carpet. Spray it with stain remover, scrub it in, and use a carpet extractor to clean it like the car detailers do. Heck, I do that on my car twice a year and I don't keep it that dirty or spill diff oil in the seats.

It's so weird watching a random Hoovie video, then watching a couple Wizard videos for the first time ever, then clicking on this and hearing references to both of them. I'm sure there's a fancy word for these coincidences.
Took apart the seat in my Ford last month to add the massaging modules from a Lincoln. Turns out there's a LOT of really sharp metal inside. Thankfully didn't need to cut any hog rings like you did. Either way, I've heard quality (metal-tang) zipties work fine.
