That's only because it is so badly done. It is fairly trivially inexpensive and easy to make a motorcycle from a 2 stoke kit, though really a 4 stroke is better because they don't vibrate nearly as much. He needs a jack-shaft and a freewheel for the chainrings and a MUCH better quality bike. This bike is too small for him, by a lot. It's cheap. It is not designed to be ridden more than 10-15 mph and most of all, cannot be stopped at high speed and will vibrate like crazy even without the engine at high speed. But bike brakes have come a LONG way in the past 10 years. You can buy hydraulic disc brakes for 50 bucks as long as you have rims that will accept a disc and caliber mounting on the frame. You can easily stop a 50mph bike going downhill with hydraulic brakes with 2 fingers. Good quality rims and tires will be much better balanced and more importantly, better quality bikes are sized. This bike is WAY too small for him. The jackshaft will allow the use of the bike's transmission. A 49cc engine should be able to develop at least 1.5hp (about a kw) and with proper gearing will be as fast or faster than an ebike with a LOT more range.
Okay we've had a zero turn mower that doesn't zero turn. We've had a teeny saw. Now we've had a bicycle that has had more welds than almost anything in his shop. So I'm guessing a Ryobi powered personal helicopter is next.

I had many of these kits over the years, if you bought an "80cc" kit it is likely a 68.6cc engine. I rode 30,000 miles on them over a period of 10 years. The weak link was the connecting rod, they would break after 2-3000 miles. Yours definitely had carb issues as they can certainly climb steep hills no problem. The carbs are junk and require immediate replacement, and the engine mounts require modification for long term reliability. In fact, I disassembled the bikes completely and applied locktite to every nut, bolt, and screw on the bike as well as engine to keep them from vibrating apart constantly. Even though they required quite a bit of maintenance they were still a blast. Eventually I added a front wheel 1000 watt hub motor, 20ah 48 volt battery, and changed the rear sprocket to a 32 tooth. It was a fantastic hybrid bike.
I was thinking a hub motor paired with a version of this that doesn't suck would be great, especially a hub motor with regen. Kind of a poor-man's hybrid
@@octane613 My hybrid bike contraption was a ripper, I ride all electric now...but when I had the gas and electric combo it did not have Regen, but it didn't really matter as a 20ah battery will take you like 25 miles approximately at full speed all by itself. The gas engine with a 1/3 gallon tank will take you 60 or so miles...so 85 miles in one ride onboard is a hell of a trip on a bike-and that's with no pedaling at all. A Regen bike kit would be cool, but they are pretty rare at the moment.
I've built over a dozen bikes with those motor kits, never had power issues like the one you're rockin. One I built in high school had over 5000 miles on it by the time I stopped riding it (once I got my actual license). Almost seems like its sucking in air past the carb.
I'd say that or the carb needs adjustment. It's running like crap by how it sounds, even a crappy two stroke should run better when it gets up into the revs.
@@tarstarkusz it's a big stretch to blame the install, it seems to be on there like it's supposed to. Tuning the carb or maybe looking for air leaks downstream of the carb should solve this.
@@GeFeldz Maybe I should have specified tuning. That's what I meant. It could be leaking carb gaskets. Might be worth making new gaskets. But this has other problems. The biggest one is this bike is too small for him. Also, they make a rear sprocket that attaches to the hub body (and not the spokes) and you can change out the gear. Personally, I think he should do a jackshaft build. It would make great content and would be a blast to ride. You can basically build a motorcycle with a jackshaft.
This is the most Ironic Bike I've ever seen... 1) Impractical 2) loud 3) not environmental friendly 4) requires fuel Completely defeats the purpose of owning a bicycle I love it. I would not be surprised if hispiters would kill to own one.

Ok, no offence to your FINE craftsmanship, but i think that intake manifold is causing some issues and probably isnt flowing well, also sounds like it needs a new spark plug/CDI. also id recommend re gapping the plug.

@@cavosavosk I didn't have much issue with the stock carb. All I had to do is adjust the c clip on the needle and ran fine But after a year I upgraded to the HP carb for the motorized bikes
It was running like crap the whole time. Even when he was going downhill it was still spitting and sputtering. Maybe those kits do suck but this one at least never ran as well as it could.
One of the more curious designs for motorised bicycles was probably the simplest, most sensible and most reliable. The French VéloSoleX or 'Solex' was a small 49cc motor situated above the front wheel with a rotating roller on top of the tyre that you lowered with a lever to engage traction. They were very economical and sold 8 million of them internationally, many of them in France to teenagers.
It also has the great feature to constantly remind the user of its awful pollution by directing the smoke into his face. Having that feature in modern vehicles would certainly accelerate the developement of low-emission engines.
@@semifavorableuncircle6952 I own a Solex 3800 and the exhaust fumes never reach my face. It exits near the lower part of the front wheel. And using a low proportion mix of synthetic 2 stroke oil induces hardly any smoke.
That sounds similar to an electrification solution that was being pitched for Citibikes here in New York. No sure if it ever caught-- Nah, it never caught on.
Never had a Solex, but I do have some Motobecanes - the more "advanced" French moped, Le Moby provides you with a rear wheel drive and a basic CVT! Oh, and with a chain so it doesn't slip when you ride over a puddle! On the topic of friction drive bikes, the US saw a fair number of "Bike Bug" front-wheel motor kits. They were manufactured by Tanaka based on their 23cc QBM-23 platform, and offered either a mechanical clutch (raising and lowering the engine) or even made an "automatic" one that had an autoclutch. I had one of the "TAS MOTOR" branded Automatics, and despite it being a whopping 1HP it really would get you comfortably up to 20mph or so.
To me, It sounds like your engine is not warm enough, or the oil mix/air fuel ratio is incorrect... I can tell you that one of these engines gets me up to ~45mph if you tune it correctly. that Intake manifold looks super janky as well haha. It absolutely sounds like something is incorrect with either fuel mixture/delivery or messed up magneto/secondary coil for your spark. The sprocket you have on your wheel should be geared for ~35mph and should feel relatively torqueie at around 20mph. I think that you should give this engine another shot because they are a lot of fun and can work way better than the experience you are currently getting.
This is the comment I was looking for. I have built two of these kits, and both were stock with no tuning at all, and they both ran much better than this. The first one I put around 200 miles on it until the bike itself fell apart, and the hardware for the motor mounting was shot, but it still ran fine. The second one I have had for around a year, and I got the model with larger mounting studs (highly recommend,) and a better bike, and it still runs great. Only around 50 miles, I don't use it much; but both of them would go 30-35mph on their own on a flat surface, and they could start from a stop pretty okay, and didn't bog too bad on hills.
When Fortnine took a pedal-and-pop moped conversion up a mountain I was endeared by it, despite it failing to go the distance. This one failing to Reach the top of a hill did not get the same reaction 🤣
That's not a good example. I haven't seen Fortnine's video but they can work well and be fun. They DO need a couple upgraded parts other than what you get in the kit, though- a rear wheel hub mounted sprocket and an engine mounted spring loaded chain tensioner.
They're probably straight-up lying about the displacement, it's likely 20cc from the looks of it. The gearing is quite clearly wrong; it's made for a bike with much smaller wheels. It would work a lot better with the right gearing, the drive sprocket needs to be about half of what it is now.
its not that small. It's in the 50-60cc range. Due to peaky power curve of the 2 stroke piston ported engine design, it's best to power it via a CVT. That way, it always stays in the power band. This likely has around 1,5-2HP. Given the simplicity of these types of engines, one could easily extract 2x power out of it by simply modifying ports and building a custom resonating exhaust. And obviously appropirate carb tuning.
Nope, it's 66cc, and the one in this video is not representative of what they can do, he has put it together wrong and it isn't running correctly. With the carb tuned properly and correct break-in procedure they do 40MPH with standard 26" mtb wheels.

This year I converted my old Giant Sedona with a mid-motor Tongsheng TSDZ2 pedal assist kit, and boy is this thing a life-changer. I did it to help with a daily 15-mile round trip commute, the last part of which was up a big hill. The kits are not cheap, the LiPo battery pack and charger representing half the cost, but you can add a $1,000 kit to a $100 or $200 bicycle and have yourself a very useful electric bike. It sure made my commute a hell of a lot easier. I am a true believer now, and the only thing holding me back from building several more bikes using hub motors and geared hub motors is time. Anyone who is a tinkerer who can afford the batteries (DO NOT cheap out on the battery packs if you don't want to burn down your house or garage) should get into electric bike conversions.
I've got one of these kits on my bike, it moves me up to 40mph! I changed the chain tensioner for a better design using a skateboard wheel and a spring for less drag and covered many miles on it. the main problem i had was the vibration coming through the bike gave me double vision at high speed, lol
@@AlvinBrinson ive ran 2 on those, bargain price 100$ granted peice of junk that may or may not vibrate like hell(seem to have speeds they like)engines off ebay, and both went about 35-40mph when fully warmed up, and both would pull both me and 50 pounds of crap along so 210lb at those speeds, could have been a bad engine but regardless they work better then shown, and i got 10s if not 100s videos i can link(from other people) to prove it

I used to have one of these kits, before i switched to a high-performance ebike. Mine worked a lot better than yours seems to for some reason, maybe i had a different gear ratio. Honestly, that kit was close to the best $100 i ever spent.

I built one of these for the first time about 6 months ago, they're terribly wonderful! The displacement is generally listed as 66/80 CCs, supposedly because In china they measure displacement differently, so the Chinese displacement is 80 and the way we would measure it in the states it'd be 66ccs If you want a lower geared sprocket, or anything after market there's websites out there completely dedicated to selling aftermarket mods for these things, different sprockets, "performance" carbs, and even nos! It's a wonderful thing to fiddle with and I'm glad other people besides youtubers with 16 subscribers love them too
You had pretty decent success actually, my foray into gas bicycles ended when in my infinite wisdom I accidentally torqued the cylinder studs straight through the crankcase. Now I'm much happier with my idiotproof 1.5kW hub motor and li-ion pack from ebay
@@shoopnooop2952 more money is like 50$ more, my issue with them is the 5-10mph loss you take, my 2 stroke maxes out at 35 from a cold start and about 10 mins in creeps to 40 when its fully warm, your really only getting 30-35 out of a stock 4 stroke as far as i know
@@jaykoerner they are more reliable and not mixing gas is nice. I've got a built one and I weigh around 230 and it goes around 33 or so. The 4 strokes have much more torque and barley have to pedal to start going at all.

This motor strikes me as "assistive" in the same way that the fan on an exercise bike is pitched in the manual as helping to cool the rider, when really what it's obviously for is to make the whole process a lot more arduous. :)
Well ive been running one for about a year as a daily, goes about 40mph, you basically have to keep a decent set of tools to keep you from getting stranded, granted ANYTHING that goes wrong can be fixed in 5-10mins max if you have parts on hand

@@TLRGReviews I’ve had some good experience using loctite on the rear sprocket mount, but the best option is to just buy a $100 set of alloy rims that have the rear sprocket hard mount on it. It’ll eliminate a lot of vibration, and won’t work loose with loctite.
damn I had one of these kits a while back. Was quite fun to ride with. I didn't really have any power issues with it and it would actually drive uphill fairly decently. And yea it was absolutely awful. Going over 25km/h was so noisy and the vibration way too much to actually hold onto the bicycle safely. stopped riding it when the welds on the exhaust ripped and it fell off. lol. Overall a fun kit but there is no quality whatsoever involved in this
I actually saw one of these conversions last week on the road, in New Jersey, where we have actual hills. I think that one was working a little bit better than this conversion. E-bikes have gotten really good as battery tech has improved. I had one blow past me on a Jersey Shore boardwalk a few weeks ago like I was standing still (I was pedaling at a good clip and had a tail wind).

80cc? Old east german Simson 'mopeds' (which are really just 50cc motorbikes but categorized different than actual bikes by law) can get up to 60km/h, sometimes more. Think it would be interesting for you to take a look at, but i don't think there will be many in the US.

I tried to sell it but nobody wanted it so I traded it for a different bike. The Pionyr is basically our czechoslovakian equivalent of the Simson mopeds.
These china bike kits are 47cc, your one seems to have a problem. It could be 1 of 2 things. Crappy spark or the carb is stuffed (common). The best thing about these is that the parts are dime a dozen. Mine has a custom exhaust, high comp head, 36 tooth sprocket with hub adapter, pull start and a few more bits and bobs. Good video! Happy to see more people loving these little engines.

I've never thought I wanted to know what it's like to be a Pacific tuna lashed to the handlebars of a motorized bicycle, but I'm glad I could share the final memories of so many maguro rolls I've eaten. Only caveats are that I imagine the rider the fish had wasn't having so much trouble with his bicycle, and our rider wasn't Japanese.
if you actually wanna go with that 2 stroke engine you need to check the insides of it. since that engine can easily pull someone else if it was brand new. your engine seems old and probably in bad shape.
made one using a car starter above the front wheel . push a button and the starter gear pops out to engage the tire , go's like crazy but no speed control .
Unfortunately that kind of fun isn't allowed here (the Netherlands), well, not without going through the proper channels. ANY engine on a bicycle makes it a motorbike and thus requires a license to drive and needs to be insured and MOT'ed. There are exceptions to this rule, but those have to be type approved by the RDW (road agency). Common exceptions are electric bicycles with an assist that stops above 25km/h. Mopeds without a helmet (up to 25km/h MAX) and Mopeds with a helmet (50cc max, and up to 45 km/h)....anything above that is a motorbike are requires a motorbike license. Yes, even a 80cc engine will never be allowed as a bicycle. This goes for anything that moves really....that's why those so called hoverboards are illegal in the country....too many manufacturers that don't want to get them approved....so they are banned. What was my point again? Ow right....no fun allowed here ;)
These kits have a 49cc version, they are legal in a lot of countries, as it cannot get faster than 40kph (about 20mph) but I don't know the rules in the Netherlands, sorry if this is just nonsense

@@paullewis770 The problem in the Netherlands is, anything on the road with a internal combustion engine requires a License plate (Yes, like a car). I'm sure you could actually buy one of these kits and get it approved (well....2 stroke is pretty much banned due to emissions....but let's skip that bit), but it would take so much hassle and money.....it wouldn't be much fun. Plus, anything that can go over 25km/h requires insurance (goooood luck with that one) and a helmet. (and proper lights etc). Fun fact, our license plate registration system is so tight, they don't need to go out on the road to check for insurance/mot/tax etc, you will simply get a warning in the post if you 'forget' to do any of these....and a fine if you don't respond. Advantage: very few uninsured drivers on the road :) Disadvantage: do NOT forget to pay....they will find you :P
@@kyle8952 In fact, all 'brommers' started off like this. The official term is still "fiest met hulpmotor" as far as I know. (That's bicycle with helper engine for those that don't speak Dutch). The old ones were even suppose to have "trappers" .... They changed the rules when I was young, but at that time there were still mopeds around with peddles like a bicycle. (I'm in my 40's .... so not quite ancient yet)

That bicycle with petrol engine, that's basically a solex (also known as ). It's a type of very weakly motorized bicycle that was partcularly popular in The Netherlands during the 1940's through 1970's.
2-strokes are very sensitive to manifold length - or anything you change in the manifolds -, and a change of 1/2" usually kills performance. If it's a race motor 1/4" is a big change in an inlet. 20:1 was pretty normal in my kart racing days, so long as it wasn't synthetic.
these things are slower than pedalling, only as much brain leakage risk as usual! Definitely agree i'd be more concerned about trousers in chains, if for no other reason that dirty oil is a bugger to remove 😆
I built one of those a while ago, except it had a ported and balanced 66cc 2 stroke engine with the stock exhaust and carb That thing was quick, it was good for around 40mph, I still have the engine and I kind of want to build another Some things I've learned from running these bikes 1. A balanced crankshaft is a must, it takes away the vibration 2. Replace the spark plugs that it came with 3. Break in the engine with 20:1 oil mixture for a couple tanks then switch to a 35:1-40:1 ratio 4. ditch the rag joint sprocket thing, replace it with a hub adapter, also you can get larger rear sprockets for it 5. A tensioner with the 4 bolts and the 2 clamps is a must, I've ruined a wheel with the 2 bolt tensioners, a spring tensioner also helps 6. Regularly check bolts, make sure they are tight and locktite them 7. Put the c clip on the jet in the carb in one of the top 2 notches, the lower ones run too rich 8. remember to have fun!
There was one of these in our neighborhood; you could hear him approach from about a mile away...sounded like a very aggressive fart, amplified w/ a megaphone. It actually moved the bicycle fairly quickly...hilarious review; maybe the next review could be a version of one of those Acme products Wile E. A few recommendation if i may ,1) change the rear sprocket system with the one that actual gets tight on the hub and not on the sprockets ,2) search for a dual brake lever (both brakes in 1 lever ),3# change to a spring chain tensioner,enjoy your new (ish) ride
I honestly think I would walk where ever I needed to go as opposed to dying from this from either the machine itself or the heart attack from padding it.
I had a motorized bike with a multi speed cog transmission on it that is normally used on bicycles. It was one of those rare automatic centrifugal transmissions on the rear chain sprockets. it actually worked and it was fast too. It had it up to 40MPH on mountain bike tires. it went right up hills with no problems at around 15 to 20+ MPH and shifted perfectly from 5 to 25 MPH shifting. It also increased my riding time by 25% then without a transmission. With some tweaking with the cassette cog sizes I bet I could get a few more miles and maybe even a bit quicker from the start but it might cause more wear.
I had one of these engines for years. A couple of pointers: 1.) You have a vacuum leak between the carb and the intake manifold. A rubber seal from a garden hose attachment is perfect to fix this. 2.) It's actually a 66cc engine. In that configuration it should go ~27 mph flat out assuming a 44 tooth sprocket. 3.) The spark plugs doesn't last long, with the oil heavy mixure it wants.
I was missing you and your crazy vehicles! They were gas powered bicycles, not mopeds, in Germany by the name of Saxonette (from Sachs, the famous moped--engines manufacturer and gear-boxes of all types) before the E-Bike era, around the 80s. The engine was mounted directly on the backwheel axis and had a gastank of about one drop. Today, they are quite rare.
I had put together a kit like this three years ago. It was a learning experience and it was a decent around town commuter for getting a small amount of groceries or something. Unfortunately though the Jasper police department was starting to harrass me over the motorized bike, just because it didn't have a license plate. I did find that it was possible to actually go though a process of applying for a VIN in indiana but it would have been such a pain the the rear that I decided to just upgrade to a motorcycle. So basically putting together a motorized bike kit was what got me into the motorcycle hobby.
In high school I worked for a local motorcycle restorer/collector. Among his collection was a few Whizzers, bikes that came from the factory with an engine like this conversion. He explained to me that the market for them was severely cut when their classification was changed to require a driver's license, having sold a great number to teenagers.
Oh man I’ve got one of these 79cc chain drive EBay conversions on a 30 year old Trek mountain bike. It’s loud and terrifying. But a lot of fun (once you get it started). Has plenty of power to get around on flat ground up to 25mph. The manual recommends way too much oil in the gas for break in for the first 250 miles (as if someone would survive 250 miles on the road riding one) So after a tank of oil with gas I switched to regular two stroke chainsaw mix and doubled the horsepower! Making it even more terrifying. Better spark plug and wire, better throttle handle, extra capacity gas tank and you could seriously use this as around town transportation. Would recommend. Worth $100 for sure.

A 49cc engine should be able to develop at least 1.5hp (about a kw) and with proper gearing will be as fast or faster than an ebike with a LOT more range.

I had many of these kits over the years, if you bought an "80cc" kit it is likely a 68.6cc engine. I rode 30,000 miles on them over a period of 10 years. The weak link was the connecting rod, they would break after 2-3000 miles. Yours definitely had carb issues as they can certainly climb steep hills no problem. The carbs are junk and require immediate replacement, and the engine mounts require modification for long term reliability. In fact, I disassembled the bikes completely and applied locktite to every nut, bolt, and screw on the bike as well as engine to keep them from vibrating apart constantly. Even though they required quite a bit of maintenance they were still a blast. Eventually I added a front wheel 1000 watt hub motor, 20ah 48 volt battery, and changed the rear sprocket to a 32 tooth. It was a fantastic hybrid bike.
I was thinking a hub motor paired with a version of this that doesn't suck would be great, especially a hub motor with regen. Kind of a poor-man's hybrid
@@octane613 My hybrid bike contraption was a ripper, I ride all electric now...but when I had the gas and electric combo it did not have Regen, but it didn't really matter as a 20ah battery will take you like 25 miles approximately at full speed all by itself. The gas engine with a 1/3 gallon tank will take you 60 or so miles...so 85 miles in one ride onboard is a hell of a trip on a bike-and that's with no pedaling at all. A Regen bike kit would be cool, but they are pretty rare at the moment.

I've built over a dozen bikes with those motor kits, never had power issues like the one you're rockin. One I built in high school had over 5000 miles on it by the time I stopped riding it (once I got my actual license). Almost seems like its sucking in air past the carb.
I'd say that or the carb needs adjustment. It's running like crap by how it sounds, even a crappy two stroke should run better when it gets up into the revs.

@@tarstarkusz it's a big stretch to blame the install, it seems to be on there like it's supposed to. Tuning the carb or maybe looking for air leaks downstream of the carb should solve this.

But this has other problems. The biggest one is this bike is too small for him. Also, they make a rear sprocket that attaches to the hub body (and not the spokes) and you can change out the gear.
Personally, I think he should do a jackshaft build. It would make great content and would be a blast to ride. You can basically build a motorcycle with a jackshaft.

Ok, no offence to your FINE craftsmanship, but i think that intake manifold is causing some issues and probably isnt flowing well, also sounds like it needs a new spark plug/CDI. also id recommend re gapping the plug.

One of the more curious designs for motorised bicycles was probably the simplest, most sensible and most reliable. The French VéloSoleX or 'Solex' was a small 49cc motor situated above the front wheel with a rotating roller on top of the tyre that you lowered with a lever to engage traction. They were very economical and sold 8 million of them internationally, many of them in France to teenagers.
It also has the great feature to constantly remind the user of its awful pollution by directing the smoke into his face. Having that feature in modern vehicles would certainly accelerate the developement of low-emission engines.

That sounds similar to an electrification solution that was being pitched for Citibikes here in New York. No sure if it ever caught-- Nah, it never caught on.
Never had a Solex, but I do have some Motobecanes - the more "advanced" French moped, Le Moby provides you with a rear wheel drive and a basic CVT!
Oh, and with a chain so it doesn't slip when you ride over a puddle!
On the topic of friction drive bikes, the US saw a fair number of "Bike Bug" front-wheel motor kits. They were manufactured by Tanaka based on their 23cc QBM-23 platform, and offered either a mechanical clutch (raising and lowering the engine) or even made an "automatic" one that had an autoclutch. I had one of the "TAS MOTOR" branded Automatics, and despite it being a whopping 1HP it really would get you comfortably up to 20mph or so.

To me, It sounds like your engine is not warm enough, or the oil mix/air fuel ratio is incorrect... I can tell you that one of these engines gets me up to ~45mph if you tune it correctly. that Intake manifold looks super janky as well haha. It absolutely sounds like something is incorrect with either fuel mixture/delivery or messed up magneto/secondary coil for your spark. The sprocket you have on your wheel should be geared for ~35mph and should feel relatively torqueie at around 20mph. I think that you should give this engine another shot because they are a lot of fun and can work way better than the experience you are currently getting.
This is the comment I was looking for. I have built two of these kits, and both were stock with no tuning at all, and they both ran much better than this. The first one I put around 200 miles on it until the bike itself fell apart, and the hardware for the motor mounting was shot, but it still ran fine. The second one I have had for around a year, and I got the model with larger mounting studs (highly recommend,) and a better bike, and it still runs great. Only around 50 miles, I don't use it much; but both of them would go 30-35mph on their own on a flat surface, and they could start from a stop pretty okay, and didn't bog too bad on hills.
When Fortnine took a pedal-and-pop moped conversion up a mountain I was endeared by it, despite it failing to go the distance.
This one failing to Reach the top of a hill did not get the same reaction 🤣
That's not a good example. I haven't seen Fortnine's video but they can work well and be fun. They DO need a couple upgraded parts other than what you get in the kit, though- a rear wheel hub mounted sprocket and an engine mounted spring loaded chain tensioner.

You must have not sealed the carb intake properly. When my firend had this same kit the bike went up hills without problems.
They're probably straight-up lying about the displacement, it's likely 20cc from the looks of it.
The gearing is quite clearly wrong; it's made for a bike with much smaller wheels.
It would work a lot better with the right gearing, the drive sprocket needs to be about half of what it is now.
I have one and measured the cylinder - it's 66ccm
its not that small. It's in the 50-60cc range. Due to peaky power curve of the 2 stroke piston ported engine design, it's best to power it via a CVT. That way, it always stays in the power band. This likely has around 1,5-2HP.
Given the simplicity of these types of engines, one could easily extract 2x power out of it by simply modifying ports and building a custom resonating exhaust. And obviously appropirate carb tuning.
Nope, it's 66cc, and the one in this video is not representative of what they can do, he has put it together wrong and it isn't running correctly. With the carb tuned properly and correct break-in procedure they do 40MPH with standard 26" mtb wheels.

This year I converted my old Giant Sedona with a mid-motor Tongsheng TSDZ2 pedal assist kit, and boy is this thing a life-changer. I did it to help with a daily 15-mile round trip commute, the last part of which was up a big hill. The kits are not cheap, the LiPo battery pack and charger representing half the cost, but you can add a $1,000 kit to a $100 or $200 bicycle and have yourself a very useful electric bike. It sure made my commute a hell of a lot easier.
I am a true believer now, and the only thing holding me back from building several more bikes using hub motors and geared hub motors is time. Anyone who is a tinkerer who can afford the batteries (DO NOT cheap out on the battery packs if you don't want to burn down your house or garage) should get into electric bike conversions.

I've got one of these kits on my bike, it moves me up to 40mph! I changed the chain tensioner for a better design using a skateboard wheel and a spring for less drag and covered many miles on it. the main problem i had was the vibration coming through the bike gave me double vision at high speed, lol

I used to have one of these kits, before i switched to a high-performance ebike. Mine worked a lot better than yours seems to for some reason, maybe i had a different gear ratio. Honestly, that kit was close to the best $100 i ever spent.

I built one of these for the first time about 6 months ago, they're terribly wonderful! The displacement is generally listed as 66/80 CCs, supposedly because In china they measure displacement differently, so the Chinese displacement is 80 and the way we would measure it in the states it'd be 66ccs
If you want a lower geared sprocket, or anything after market there's websites out there completely dedicated to selling aftermarket mods for these things, different sprockets, "performance" carbs, and even nos!
It's a wonderful thing to fiddle with and I'm glad other people besides youtubers with 16 subscribers love them too
You had pretty decent success actually, my foray into gas bicycles ended when in my infinite wisdom I accidentally torqued the cylinder studs straight through the crankcase. Now I'm much happier with my idiotproof 1.5kW hub motor and li-ion pack from ebay

There are 4 stroke versions that are much better since you aren't burning the oil. but those are normally more money so people don't buy them.

@@jaykoerner they are more reliable and not mixing gas is nice. I've got a built one and I weigh around 230 and it goes around 33 or so. The 4 strokes have much more torque and barley have to pedal to start going at all.

This motor strikes me as "assistive" in the same way that the fan on an exercise bike is pitched in the manual as helping to cool the rider, when really what it's obviously for is to make the whole process a lot more arduous. :)
Well ive been running one for about a year as a daily, goes about 40mph, you basically have to keep a decent set of tools to keep you from getting stranded, granted ANYTHING that goes wrong can be fixed in 5-10mins max if you have parts on hand

@@TLRGReviews I’ve had some good experience using loctite on the rear sprocket mount, but the best option is to just buy a $100 set of alloy rims that have the rear sprocket hard mount on it. It’ll eliminate a lot of vibration, and won’t work loose with loctite.
damn I had one of these kits a while back. Was quite fun to ride with. I didn't really have any power issues with it and it would actually drive uphill fairly decently. And yea it was absolutely awful. Going over 25km/h was so noisy and the vibration way too much to actually hold onto the bicycle safely. stopped riding it when the welds on the exhaust ripped and it fell off. lol. Overall a fun kit but there is no quality whatsoever involved in this

I actually saw one of these conversions last week on the road, in New Jersey, where we have actual hills. I think that one was working a little bit better than this conversion. E-bikes have gotten really good as battery tech has improved. I had one blow past me on a Jersey Shore boardwalk a few weeks ago like I was standing still (I was pedaling at a good clip and had a tail wind).

80cc? Old east german Simson 'mopeds' (which are really just 50cc motorbikes but categorized different than actual bikes by law) can get up to 60km/h, sometimes more.
Think it would be interesting for you to take a look at, but i don't think there will be many in the US.

I tried to sell it but nobody wanted it so I traded it for a different bike. The Pionyr is basically our czechoslovakian equivalent of the Simson mopeds.

These china bike kits are 47cc, your one seems to have a problem. It could be 1 of 2 things. Crappy spark or the carb is stuffed (common). The best thing about these is that the parts are dime a dozen. Mine has a custom exhaust, high comp head, 36 tooth sprocket with hub adapter, pull start and a few more bits and bobs. Good video! Happy to see more people loving these little engines.

I've never thought I wanted to know what it's like to be a Pacific tuna lashed to the handlebars of a motorized bicycle, but I'm glad I could share the final memories of so many maguro rolls I've eaten. Only caveats are that I imagine the rider the fish had wasn't having so much trouble with his bicycle, and our rider wasn't Japanese.
if you actually wanna go with that 2 stroke engine you need to check the insides of it. since that engine can easily pull someone else if it was brand new. your engine seems old and probably in bad shape.

Unfortunately that kind of fun isn't allowed here (the Netherlands), well, not without going through the proper channels. ANY engine on a bicycle makes it a motorbike and thus requires a license to drive and needs to be insured and MOT'ed. There are exceptions to this rule, but those have to be type approved by the RDW (road agency). Common exceptions are electric bicycles with an assist that stops above 25km/h. Mopeds without a helmet (up to 25km/h MAX) and Mopeds with a helmet (50cc max, and up to 45 km/h)....anything above that is a motorbike are requires a motorbike license. Yes, even a 80cc engine will never be allowed as a bicycle.
This goes for anything that moves really....that's why those so called hoverboards are illegal in the country....too many manufacturers that don't want to get them approved....so they are banned.

@@paullewis770 These things used to be legal in netherlands - used to be one called Spartamet that was very popular. They aren't made any more but the ones which still exist were given registration in 25kmh class.
@@paullewis770 The problem in the Netherlands is, anything on the road with a internal combustion engine requires a License plate (Yes, like a car). I'm sure you could actually buy one of these kits and get it approved (well....2 stroke is pretty much banned due to emissions....but let's skip that bit), but it would take so much hassle and money.....it wouldn't be much fun.
Plus, anything that can go over 25km/h requires insurance (goooood luck with that one) and a helmet. (and proper lights etc).
Fun fact, our license plate registration system is so tight, they don't need to go out on the road to check for insurance/mot/tax etc, you will simply get a warning in the post if you 'forget' to do any of these....and a fine if you don't respond. Advantage: very few uninsured drivers on the road :) Disadvantage: do NOT forget to pay....they will find you :P

The old ones were even suppose to have "trappers" .... They changed the rules when I was young, but at that time there were still mopeds around with peddles like a bicycle. (I'm in my 40's .... so not quite ancient yet)

That bicycle with petrol engine, that's basically a solex (also known as ). It's a type of very weakly motorized bicycle that was partcularly popular in The Netherlands during the 1940's through 1970's.
2-strokes are very sensitive to manifold length - or anything you change in the manifolds -, and a change of 1/2" usually kills performance. If it's a race motor 1/4" is a big change in an inlet.
20:1 was pretty normal in my kart racing days, so long as it wasn't synthetic.
I feel so uncomfortable watching you ride this thing without a helmet.
GIven the speeds involved, I'd be a lot more worried about the whole "pants caught on machinery" thing than head impacts, but maybe don't go by me.

these things are slower than pedalling, only as much brain leakage risk as usual! Definitely agree i'd be more concerned about trousers in chains, if for no other reason that dirty oil is a bugger to remove 😆

I built one of those a while ago, except it had a ported and balanced 66cc 2 stroke engine with the stock exhaust and carb
That thing was quick, it was good for around 40mph, I still have the engine and I kind of want to build another
Some things I've learned from running these bikes
1. A balanced crankshaft is a must, it takes away the vibration
2. Replace the spark plugs that it came with
3. Break in the engine with 20:1 oil mixture for a couple tanks then switch to a 35:1-40:1 ratio
4. ditch the rag joint sprocket thing, replace it with a hub adapter, also you can get larger rear sprockets for it
5. A tensioner with the 4 bolts and the 2 clamps is a must, I've ruined a wheel with the 2 bolt tensioners, a spring tensioner also helps
6. Regularly check bolts, make sure they are tight and locktite them
7. Put the c clip on the jet in the carb in one of the top 2 notches, the lower ones run too rich
8. remember to have fun!

My brother fell off his mountain bike as a teenager, and carved his face up like a medium rare steak. The helmet saved his life.
There was one of these in our neighborhood; you could hear him approach from about a mile away...sounded like a very aggressive fart, amplified w/ a megaphone. It actually moved the bicycle fairly quickly...hilarious review; maybe the next review could be a version of one of those Acme products Wile E. Coyote liked, such as the "outboard-powered steamroller"...

I think something is wrong with your bike my bike doesnt even fell hills and i dont need to peedal at all and if i go full thotle then dump the clutch my wheel skids , check out LA hover is a motorized bike channel he will help you fix your bike , other than that , Nice video

Makes my 1980 moped look like a luxury vehicle, 75cc & does 40MPH up hill. Haven't used it much though in a while but this video makes me want to work on it again.
A few recommendation if i may ,1) change the rear sprocket system with the one that actual gets tight on the hub and not on the sprockets ,2) search for a dual brake lever (both brakes in 1 lever ),3# change to a spring chain tensioner,enjoy your new (ish) ride
I honestly think I would walk where ever I needed to go as opposed to dying from this from either the machine itself or the heart attack from padding it.
I had a motorized bike with a multi speed cog transmission on it that is normally used on bicycles. It was one of those rare automatic centrifugal transmissions on the rear chain sprockets. it actually worked and it was fast too. It had it up to 40MPH on mountain bike tires. it went right up hills with no problems at around 15 to 20+ MPH and shifted perfectly from 5 to 25 MPH shifting. It also increased my riding time by 25% then without a transmission. With some tweaking with the cassette cog sizes I bet I could get a few more miles and maybe even a bit quicker from the start but it might cause more wear.
I had one of these engines for years. A couple of pointers:
1.) You have a vacuum leak between the carb and the intake manifold. A rubber seal from a garden hose attachment is perfect to fix this.
2.) It's actually a 66cc engine. In that configuration it should go ~27 mph flat out assuming a 44 tooth sprocket.
3.) The spark plugs doesn't last long, with the oil heavy mixure it wants.

I was missing you and your crazy vehicles! They were gas powered bicycles, not mopeds, in Germany by the name of Saxonette (from Sachs, the famous moped--engines manufacturer and gear-boxes of all types) before the E-Bike era, around the 80s. The engine was mounted directly on the backwheel axis and had a gastank of about one drop. Today, they are quite rare.

I had put together a kit like this three years ago. It was a learning experience and it was a decent around town commuter for getting a small amount of groceries or something. Unfortunately though the Jasper police department was starting to harrass me over the motorized bike, just because it didn't have a license plate. I did find that it was possible to actually go though a process of applying for a VIN in indiana but it would have been such a pain the the rear that I decided to just upgrade to a motorcycle. So basically putting together a motorized bike kit was what got me into the motorcycle hobby.

In high school I worked for a local motorcycle restorer/collector. Among his collection was a few Whizzers, bikes that came from the factory with an engine like this conversion. He explained to me that the market for them was severely cut when their classification was changed to require a driver's license, having sold a great number to teenagers.
Oh man I’ve got one of these 79cc chain drive EBay conversions on a 30 year old Trek mountain bike. It’s loud and terrifying. But a lot of fun (once you get it started). Has plenty of power to get around on flat ground up to 25mph.
The manual recommends way too much oil in the gas for break in for the first 250 miles (as if someone would survive 250 miles on the road riding one) So after a tank of oil with gas I switched to regular two stroke chainsaw mix and doubled the horsepower! Making it even more terrifying. Better spark plug and wire, better throttle handle, extra capacity gas tank and you could seriously use this as around town transportation. Would recommend. Worth $100 for sure.
