Thanks Becky for sharing and inspiring. I’m 83 years old and just started my first journal. Your advice and ideas are very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to do this and help others.
I am 59 year old deaf man who grew up in a world of missing out on information. Nowadays with digital technology and the internet that uses Closed-Captioning I am able to get the intended information without difficulties. Imagine the three simple advice you just gave might have been mentioned all those years ago but did not hear them, but today it makes perfect sense because of this video with Closed-Captioning. What would have happened if I did hear all those years ago? Here is my advice, never tell a deaf person that whatever was just said “is not important”! Anyway, awesome video and thank you for sharing.
Becky, I just commented on cafe video from 2024 asking to see early sketchbooks and asking how you keep so positive!!! I am a senior who used to be artist but have lost much function in dominant hand and lost mobility to get outside but it is therapy to sketch tree's on balcony and do watercolor wash às best I can!! Thanks for your inspirations as I am a beginner again!! ❤ from Ontario, Canada 🍁 😊😊😊
Thank you for your videos. I’m learning so much. When my daughter started school I had to buy her square beeswax crayons. They were the most expensive crayons I have ever bought. I bought them 8 years ago and not one is missing or broken. We take care of our crayons. It is my all time favorite medium. With these crayons, pictures are drawn with no outline. They are so beautiful.
Hi, Becky. I appreciate the encouragement in this video. A little bit of your own history is rewarding. I am 71 and picked up the pen and brush 2 years ago on January 6, 2022. Illustration is my interest. At least I have a handle on pencil sketches, though I have undergone extensive learning in perspective and construction, line art, outline, values, etc. I capture a quick form of draw, paint and observation from you. 😊😊😊
I really like the idea of just painting everyday objects and not stressing about finding the right composition in nature to do. You know you can take 50 photographs in order to find one that is worth doing, but with your method, you just go ahead and draw and paint what is right in front of you.
Thank you. This was encouraging. I just found your channel, and I'm binge-watching because I'm just starting watercolor and acrylic. I did my first acrylic sketch today where I didn't do a pencil drawing first. That was inspired by you! And, it turned out okay. I let myself relax and just enjoy the process. Your advice has been so helpful!
I loved your video. It makes me realize that I’ve tried to do too much too soon. I will now focus on small objects and work on improving skills. Thank you.
Thanks Becky. I feel like I should add that there are no mistakes, that's a mental block, and when you're doing a drawing, you're not trying to draw. That's another mental block. Practicing is not trying. Otherwise you're talking yourself out of doing something.
Thanks Becky. I would like to see you draw a storyboard with a narrative coming together into a complicated message of some kind. However, it’s impossible to know where you’ll go from here.
In other cases I am really not the one, listening a long time to someone at the internet chatting. But every time you post a video, I am here for it. There is so much in your words I am resonating with. Practicing with easy motives or dry pencils, when I wish to draw landscapes for example or people or buildings, is sadly not something that brings me joy (simple allday subjects for daily practicing in my sketchbook are luckily very enjoyable). But even so I force myself from time to time, to try new forms of drawing, or forms I think of as boring... because I know, this will add to my knowledge and my skills on the long term.
Thank you so much for your comment, Britta! ☺️🌈💗 It is so true that the little things around us bring us the most joy, I agree with that! When I spend a lot of time sketching landscapes/cityscapes, I miss the little things and have to go back to them! It is also true that we never know what a new form of creating will bring us, got to keep trying and break through our pre-conceptions.
Becky, I just want to say thank you very much for the advice and your dedicated UA-cam videos! you are a true inspiration! I am a registered nurse and interested in drawing and painting, especially watercolor. after watching your line and wash youtubes, I started drawing and painting in watercolor and for the first time I filled the whole pad by last week!! i carried the pad with me to work and i used my break time to draw and paint in a fast speed. Now I am starting to fill the 2nd pad. Thank you so much!
Hi Ellen, I'm so glad to hear about your experience! ☺️ It's so great that you are taking art into your everyday life and work. You can join the group "The Joy of Drawing and Painting" that I created for participants in my classes if you want: facebook.com/groups/1268369683684883 Feel free to share your sketches whenever you like. This group is very friendly and supportive.
Hi Becky, I just followed your videos recently and got really inspired to sketch daily things that I see. I bought a new sketchbook dedicated for this, kinda like an art journal. Thank you so much for the inspo. Have a good day!
Very honest advices.. thank you for that inspiring video.. I love all your work and get a lot of motivation to draw and sketch daily life objects.. as you said, I jumped into watercolors right when I started but now I'm getting back to basics.. thank you 😊
A three great practices for beginners and nonbeginners alike. Drawing everyday boring stuff is always a great option when I just can't get great ideas flowing or can't leave the house due the weather, my schedule or feeling ill.
Thank you so much for sharing your advices and your first sketchbook! It helps a lot to see your early work, knowing where you are now. It gives me courage and patience to practice for the years to come, knowing that progress will come.
I just found your channel today and this is the second of your videos I watched. I am a complete beginner at drawing and I am 54, homemaker, mother of 4 children, with only 1 child at home and he is already 17. So now I have a little more time and I want to learn drawing and I have been doing a little bit of that since April of this year. Thank you for your videos and instruction. Very much appreciated.
You are inspirational Becky. Bless you ❤️ This video has made me realise that I need to relax and not try to draw and paint everything eg seascapes, land scape, flowers etc all in compositions. I’ve had some success but I feel that I’m all over the place! Now, using your encouragement, I’m going to focus on life around me by drawing and painting simple objects daily for a while and keep my drawing simple. It will be interesting to see how I go! Thanks again 🤗🤗🌹
Wow …love that you shared your practice sketch book ….makes me want to go around my house and start drawing everything I see ! This video is also helpful in that …. We need to be able to draw individual shapes/ objects in order to do a “BIG” picture .👍🏼
Thank you, Becky: you are such a wise and inspiring teacher. Ever since I started watching your videos a few weeks back I have started believing in the possibility I could learn and have been sketching everyday to practice and not for the results. Thank you!
Thanks for this video (and channel) Becky! I just discovered your channel and I love seeing your work and how mundane things come to life in your sketchbooks - even the early sketchbooks! It's definitely good motivation for me to continue in my own sketchbook and not worry about thinking of what to draw. Also so cool that you went to UVic - I went there too! I also remember all the bunnies, although I didn't think to sketch them back then. 🙂
Becky, I found your videos over a week ago and I just want to let you know how much you have inspired me. Sometimes the scariest thing can be a blank journal page, where to start and how to mix and use your colours. Your advice to just relax, not get too stressed about being accurate has been a game changer for me. I now have the beginnings of a sketch book. I also love your tip to frame a page. Thank you for your videos and inspiration. Much love from Ireland💚🌻
Wow, Becky, everything you said is so true! I’ve been painting and also teaching for 20 years and I agree with all your wisdom. It’s so individual and that’s what makes art such a beautiful expression. Thank you for your channel.💝
Thank you for sharing your first sketchbooks! I am so happy to have found you! I am a “forever beginner” in watercolor and really want to create a journal. Your tutorials are so inspiring. I’m so glad you reminded me to start simple and not to get overwhelmed by following many more experienced artists. I find myself happily sketching only to freeze when I pick up a brush to paint it! Can’t wait to explore your beginner tutorials and start my own journal! Namaste 🙏

You can do it! It's never too late to get started.
