    Great insights into the life of a professional artist and art educator. It's clear that art is an integral part of your life and who you are as a creative person. You even make time to practise playing the piano!
    Since I got into watercolour painting and urban sketching about 3 years ago, I've hardly played guitar. You have inspired me to make time to combine both art and music in my life, thank you.

    Thank you Becky, for sharing your art and thoughts with me, especially glad to hear what you say about giving yourself permission to do what you do just for yourself because it makes you happy! we need to remind ourselves that it is what matters, keeping ourselves happy and sane in this world of effinciency and demands for results of some kind. It is raining outside, I have a cold and have a wonderful day with my watercolour sketchbook!!

    So much wisdom in this video, Becky! Thank you for the reminders.
    The juxtaposition of cat and fish was superb, and superbly executed. It me laugh at the end to see the cat's expression and the fish taking no notice at all of this big fat cat staring at him!

    Becky,
    This was delightful! You are delightful. Thank you for taking us along with you into your day as an artist. I have often tried to figure out how to work making art into my day and seeing this was enormously helpful. Plus, you're practicing music, too!
    Skies, daily journaling, urban sketchers you mentioned, hydrangeas are all the same things I've tried separately, apart from each other. I even tried sketching in a café but, around here, one is kind of rushed out of your seat after an hour. I've found one is left alone if you choose to sit at a table outside for the most part.
    Thank you. I just loved this video! Now that I only work part-time, I have time to do this.

    Thank you so much for your inspirational videos. You are a breath of fresh air as the saying goes . Life has been a real difficult time for all of us ,more so than for others and it’s so easy to lose track of what is most important . It’s so easy to forget and not make time for the things that make us happy . You have proved that you don’t have to spend hours upon hours creating this perfect painting but a quick sketch done frequently can improve our skills . Your video has really cheered me up today having just tested positive with COVID and not feeling that well . Thank you again, 💐🐝🐌🦋🦔🐜

    I found the same thing too! I don’t have an art degree but I was in school for many years and always filled in my schedule with art classes. I’ve have two drawing classes, hoping to improve my perspective but I don’t really remember learning anything about perspective and my drawing skills never improved. I’d always give up because I got tired of looking at something looking like a 6 yo drew it 😂 it’s only when I decided to teach myself to watercolor from UA-cam videos for the past two years that I’ve learned about line of sight and blocking things out which mage things so much easier. For the past two years I’ve been tracing but I really want to observe and draw it myself. It’s a drawing class how come they don’t teach that.

    Hi Becky! 🤗 You play piano pretty well! Had you ever played or had piano lessons before your neighbor started teaching you? (I'm on the slow-track of learning because I'm self-teaching myself with Alfred's Adult Basic Course All-In-One book. My teacher is UA-cam! lol Problem is...I HAVE TOO MANY PIANO TEACHERS!! haha) Keep up the good work in art & music. Both soothe the soul. 💖 So have you ever played before 2020?

    • @BeckyCao
      @BeckyCao  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Sylvia! ☺️💗 Well, yes, before 2020, I used an App called "Simply Piano" to learn how to play some simple tunes, and had to pay a yearly subscription fee which is over $100 dollars. I stopped using it because I was not improving on how to play with sensations and correct finger skills. My playing sounded awful because I didn't know how to use correct finger pressures. I really recommend you to do some in-person classes, even two times a month is great. :) You learn more about how to play properly.

    • @BeckyCao

      Thanks. The Arches paper is cold-pressed, with rough texture, challenging to create smooth lines. But I like the loose organic lines with the friction.

    There was a time in my life when I would not have considered this style complete. That it is just an artists rough sketch to be built upon for a final art peice.
    If you look at your parents and grandparents photo albums they are most likely dressed well and standing next to someone very prominent throughout history.
    Whereas when kids today grow up and their children and grandchildren want to look back at their parents/ grandparents lives they'll see photos of food, partying, just the goofiest things. Future generations will believe there was a food famine or something.
    I never understood this drive to mediocrity. However, I think I get it now. Today's society has it so good they have no real adversity. No real struggle and strife. They have no real issues of concern. So they create their own struggles. One of which is there belief in lack of time. Therefore the hurried and edited life. The quick line work, the one stroke painting, the one time sketchbook studies now being considered the goal and finished pieces. The idea that just a cabbage is art in itself.
    We used to believe the goal of a good life well spent was building and being part of a community. To be a well greased cog in the machine of community and perfection. Today's youth seem to be more personal. More all about me the individual. The simple line. The simple one brush stroke. Which is also valid.
    Admitting my definition of art is expanding isn't easy for an old guy. What is easy is admitting I love the style. Maybe through the mere exposure effect, but either way I'm liking it. Thank you.

    Do you ever draw from a photo? Maybe you see a great subject but the location does not allow you to stay long enough to sketch.

    • @BeckyCao
      @BeckyCao  2 місяці тому

      I draw from a photo when I do commission works for people and places from far away. But for my sketchbook work, if I think there is not enough time to sketch something on location, I just don't do it. ☺️ Sketching from photos doesn't offer the sensations and room for creativity compare to being there in real time.
