  • This aquarium has been up and running in the same spot in my lounge for the last 18 years. I take a deep dive into what it was, the history of some of the fish, how I changed it just over a year ago to a deep dirted substrate, what I have learned and also some problems I've had.

Java Fern, one of the changes you made is the lighting and I think you're spot on here because all epihytes are essentially low light plants. Move the position around or move some Vallisneria around it to provide shade. Good luck 👍

Beautiful tank - love hearing the history of this tank. I have the same challenge with Java fern - for years it looked amazing, then as my tank matured now it looks all scraggly.
    Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for watching. The Java Fern can be a frustration.

My guess is that because java fern does not dig its roots into the substrate it relies heavily on nutrients in the water column. But nutrients in the water column often deteriorate in long-term setups

Avoid water changes at all costs, it stresses the fish. Try it for 2 months, your tank is well ready for it

Dude seriously beautiful tank. Love the variety of plants in there. I am looking forward to making one of my 20 gallons a cabomba forest by just anchoring them in rocks all along the back, and the only substrate i will put will be more grapevine leaves to decompose and create habitat for rotifers/moina. I am seriously hoping the daphnia will manage to survive in the cabomba forest and not get decimated by the white clouds. When I feed them live food they transform into piranhas 🤣

Very nice build. Has the vallisneria ever taken over the front?

I have to keep trimming away the runners that go into the areas I don't want it in. If you don't, you'll end up with a tank full of only vallisneria. They do tend to usurp other plants if you do not keep your finger on it.

@@droeksonfishkeeping same experience. I just recently rescaped one of my tanks and not return them because my setups end up looking like each other when they're around.

Beautiful tank! What kind of cryptocoryne is in the middle of the tank? The tall one with thin ruffled leaves.

It ia a Crypt undulatus, or at least that was what I was told it was.

This video is great. I've always wanted to do a deep dirted substrate. I know sand acts as a filter above the dirt. I have been looking on the net everywhere, but cannot find a simple biological explanation to explain how the dirted substrate works to keep nitrates low. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Asnfor the Java fern..
You could always take a few small pieces of fern.. Put them in jars of the tank water from the 75.
Try adding different nutrients to each jar, and see which one may help it to green up and grow...
(Because it may be hard to tell, what is missing in a big tank full of hungry plants.)
I saw another vid, where a guy has a deep sand bed, and his Java ferns grew very slowly, and were rather pale, as well.
That tank had very little nitrate.
But, that may not be the only factor.. 🍀🤔
His gravel tanks grew it very well.

You may have a point. Maybe it is the lack of nitrates they do not like, that used to be around 25, sometimes higher, in the old setup.

Can I use dirt and cap it with gravel? Don’t like the sand because it’s so fine and ends up in the water column because of my loaches. Clouds my tank too much.

    • @droeksonfishkeeping
      @droeksonfishkeeping  6 місяців тому +1

Use a coarser sand (or fine gravel where does gravel end and sand begin?) Mine has around a 1mm grain size, does not have to be like play sand, I also don't like that. But ordinarely aquarium gravel won't work, the dirt will eventually end up in the water column.

you can lower water current too. not sure which loaches u have but i have a tank with kuhli loaches basically living the dream hidden in piles of decomposing leaves and crystal clear water. If I had any significant flow in there it would waste those leaves i put in there and clog any filter existing on the market, short of a shredder like those you have in sinks haha. The mass of decomposing leaves also helps kuhli loaches stay safe from any rapid changes in water changes if any, because believe it or not, they love to live inside there. They also don't like at all to be exposed, drop leaves on your sand and they will use them to seek exploration while feeling safe under them. Or do what Droeks kinly suggested with a bit coarser sand. Look at the material of said sand, some are way lighter than others and fly around with practically no invitation 🙃all sand i know will not compact, except clay-based types which I have in my backyard. Funny how a light rain can create a tiny pond lol

If I understand you correctly.. 1 inch "dirt" ( mixed from 2 parts peat, 1 part organic potting soil, one part organic compost, sprinkling of bone meal) capped with 2 inches of sand (about 1mm grain size in this particular tank).
